Willard L. Russell
PURCELLVILLE, Va. - Willard Leon Russell, 87, of 130 S. 29th St., died Sunday, July 5, 1998, at his sister's home in Harpers Ferry, W.Va.
Born April 3, 1911, in Taylorstown, Va., he was the son of the late James Harrison and Linnie Estell Frye Russell.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Ella Virginia Morris Russell.
He was a retired truck driver with the Virginia Highway Department.
He was a member of Purcellville United Methodist Church.
He is survived by a sister, Mabel Simpson of Harpers Ferry; a brother, George Russell of Winchester, Va.; nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by seven brothers, Lester Russell, Walter Russell, Carroll Russell, Alvie Russell, Richard Russell, Howard Russell and Clarence Russell.
Services will be Wednesday at 11 a.m. at Eackles-Spencer Funeral Home, Harpers Ferry. The Rev. Jim Hamrick will officiate. Burial will be in Greenhill Cemetery, Berryville, Va.
The family will receive friends at the funeral home today from 7 to 9 p.m.

Zelda M.S. Wade
Zelda May Strole Wade, 86, of Hagerstown, died Monday, July 6, 1998, at Washington County Hospital.
Born Aug. 2, 1911, in Chambersburg, Pa., she was the daughter of the late Ott and Laura Shockey Strole Powell.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Amos Winton Wade, in 1981.
She was a homemaker.
She was a member of Mount Zion Lutheran Church at Locust Grove.
She was a member of AARP.
She is survived by a daughter, Joyce E. Wade of Hagerstown; a niece; and three nephews.
Services will be Thursday at 10:30 a.m. in the chapel of Bast Funeral Home, 7606 Old National Pike, Boonsboro. The Rev. Blaine E. Feightner will officiate. Burial will be in Mount Zion Cemetery at Locust Grove.
The family will receive friends at the funeral home Wednesday from 7 to 9 p.m.
Glenn E. Stanley
Glenn Edwin Stanley, 75, of 10830 Brentwood Terrace, Hagerstown, who died Sunday, July 5, 1998, is survived by a son, Glenn E. Stanley Jr. of Hagerstown.
Philip L. Burgan
CLEAR SPRING - Philip Lee "Pappy" Burgan, 85, of Spickler Road, and a resident of Homewood Nursing Home, Williamsport, died Sunday, July 5, 1998, at the home.
Born April 22, 1913, in Hagerstown, he was the son of the late Philip Gable and Emma Frances Grimm Burgan.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Lelia Mae Poole Burgan, in 1980.
He retired as a custodian in Clear Spring schools for the Washington County Board of Education in 1980. He was employed by the Maryland State Highway Administration.
A veteran of World War II, he served in the U.S. Army.
He was a member of St. Peter's Lutheran Church of Clear Spring.
He was a life member of Joseph C. Herbert American Legion of Clear Spring and the Last Man Club.
He is survived by a daughter, Frances M. Mills of Martinsburg, W.Va.; three sons, Charles E. Burgan Sr. of Hancock, Philip L. Burgan and William E. Burgan Sr., both of Clear Spring; a niece whom he raised, Mary Wade Rogers of Hagerstown; two nephews, John Wade of Frederick, Md., and William Deaver of Orlando, Fla., whom he raised; 12 grandchildren; and 13 great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by four sisters and four brothers.
Services will be Thursday at 2 p.m. at Donald E. Thompson Funeral Home, 13607 National Pike, Clear Spring. The Rev. Andy Carr will officiate. Burial will be in Cedar Lawn Memorial Park, Hagerstown.
The family will receive friends at the funeral home Wednesday from 7 to 9 p.m.

Chalmers E. Gruber Jr.
Chalmers Edwin "Mike" Gruber Jr., 80, of 723 Virginia Ave., Hagerstown, died Monday, July 6, 1998, at his home.
Born April 1, 1918, in Hagerstown, he was the son of the late Chalmers E. and Rosaline Shantz Gruber.
He was employed with Weiss Brothers for 40 years.
He is survived by his wife, Garnetta P. Murray Gruber; one daughter, Granis A. Dixon of Williamsport; one son, Jeffrey L. Gruber of Jessup, Md.; two sisters, Dorothy H. Lushbaugh of Hagerstown and Lillian M. Null of Waynesboro, Pa.; one half brother, James E. "Butch" Gruber of Hagerstown; two grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; and nieces and nephews.
Memorial services will be Saturday at 11 a.m. at Rose Hill Cemetery. The Rev. Louis L. Emerick will officiate.
There will be no viewing.

George F. Kramer
EDGEWATER, Md. - George F. Kramer, 70, of Edgewater, and formerly of Hagerstown, died Monday, July 6, 1998, at his home.
Born Oct. 6, 1927, in Hagerstown, he was the son of the late Frank G. and Anna G. Shank Kramer.
He served in the U.S. Navy.
A Ph.D., he was a professor at the University of Maryland. Until recently, he was assistant dean at the University of Maryland.
He is survived by one sister, Ida P. King of Petersburg, Va.; one brother, Paul E. Kramer of Hagerstown; three nieces; and three nephews.
Services will be Friday at 9 a.m. at George P. Kalas Funeral Home, 297 Solomons Island Road, Edgewater. Burial will be in Lakemont Memorial Gardens, Davidsonville, Md.
The viewing will be Thursday from 2 to 4 p.m. and 6 to 9 p.m. at the funeral home.
Carrie E. Burkett
SMITHSBURG - Carrie E. Burkett, 86, of West Water Street, died Sunday, July 5, 1998, at Colton Villa Nursing Home in Hagerstown.
Born Aug. 27, 1911, in Greencastle, Pa., she was the daughter of the late Morris L. and Susan S. Foust Brant.
Her husband, Jacob R. Burkett, died in 1987.
She is survived by three daughters, Patricia Burkett of Leitersburg, Susan Esworthy of Reisterstown, Md., and Anna C. Burkett of Annapolis; three sons, Jacob Burkett of Mansfield, Pa., Clyde Burkett of Bridgeport, Ala., and John Burkett of Smithsburg; three sisters, Helen Beaver of Greencastle, Nellie Diffenderfer of Chambersburg, Pa., and Pearl Jones of Waynesboro; one brother, Eddie Brant of Chambersburg; four grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by one daughter, Alice Starr.
Services will be Saturday at 11 a.m. at Davis Funeral Home, Smithsburg. Pastor Jonathan D. Laye will officiate. Burial will be in Smithsburg Cemetery.
The family will receive friends at the funeral home Friday from 7 to 9 p.m.
Agnes V. Gossard
Agnes Virginia "Sissy" Gossard, 62, of 16362 Mt. Tabor Road, died Monday, July 6, 1998, at Washington County Hospital.
Born June 13, 1936, in Rockbridge County, Va., she was the daughter of the late George Albert and Thelma Virginia West Carter Sr.
She was a member of Bethel Assembly of God.
She was a member of AARP.
She is survived by her husband of 46 years, Donald R. Gossard Sr.; two daughters, Virginia Marie Shawyer of Hagerstown and Sandy Lynn Alton of Williamsport; five sons, Ronald Lee Gossard Sr. of West Virginia, and Donald Robert Gossard Jr., George Earl Gossard Sr., Dennis James Gossard and Gary Wayne Gossard, all of Hagerstown; nine brothers, George Alec Carter of Hancock, Odell S. Carter of Columbus, Miss., C. Ray Carter of Smithsburg, H. Wayne Carter of Marlowe, W.Va., Ronald Lee Carter of Williamsport, and Thomas E. Carter, Richard W. Carter, W. Nick Carter and John K. Carter, all of Hagerstown; 12 grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; and nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by one brother, Jerry Carter; and two grandchildren.
Services will be Friday at 2 p.m. at Bethel Assembly of God, 515 E. Wilson Blvd. The Rev. Terry B. Broadwater and the Rev. Michael Jones will officiate. Burial will be in Rest Haven Cemetery.
The family will receive friends Thursday, from 7 to 9 p.m. at Minnich Funeral Home, 415 E. Wilson Blvd. and Friday, one hour prior to the service at the church.
Chleo S. Burtner
KEEDYSVILLE - Chleo Snyder Burtner, 94, of 20 S. Main St., died Monday, July 6, 1998, at Washington County Hospital.
Born Feb. 18, 1904, in Keedysville, she was the daughter of the late Herbert G. and Maude N. Baxter Snyder.
Her husband, Rene W. Burtner, died in 1974.
She was employed by Washington County Board of Education as a teacher at Winter Street School and later as a substitute teacher for schools in southern Washington County.
She was a member of Salem United Methodist Church and was a Sunday school teacher.
She also was a member of Olive Branch Chapter 34 Order of the Eastern Star in Keedysville, and Keedysville Homemakers.
She is survived by one son, Leroy R. Burtner of Hagerstown; two grandchildren, Hope A. Burtner and Christopher J. Burtner, both of Hagerstown; and one niece.
Services will be held Thursday at 2 p.m. in the chapel of Bast Funeral Home, 7606 Old National Pike, Boonsboro. The Rev. Fred Harris will officiate. Burial will be in Fairview Cemetery, Keedysville.
The family will receive friends at the funeral home one hour prior to the service on Thursday.
