Adaline A. Sweeney

Adaline A. Sweeney, 82, of Hagerstown, died Sunday, June 21, 1998, at Washington County Hospital.

She was the daughter of the late George Schaeffer and Mary Marguerite Davis Jones.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Donald F. Sweeney, in 1994.

She was a life member of First Brethren Church.

She had been involved in the Brownies for many years.

She is survived by one daughter, Gail L. Hess of Morgan Hill, Calif.; one granddaughter, Vicki L. Gallagher of Marriottsville, Md.; two grandsons, Scott R. Hess of Stafford, Va., and Philip A. Hess of Morgan Hill; two great-grandsons; four nieces and two nephews.

She was preceded in death by one sister, Georgeanna Crawford; and two brothers, John W. Jones and George S. Jones Jr.

Graveside services will be held Wednesday at 11 a.m. at Rose Hill Cemetery, 600 S. Potomac St., Hagerstown. The Rev. Bruce A. Foster will officiate.

There will be no viewing.

Arrangements are by Andrew K. Coffman Funeral Home, Hagerstown.

Harry Seltzer

Dr. Harry Seltzer, 78, of 10900 Clinton Ave., Hagerstown, died Monday, June 22, 1998, at University of Maryland Hospital in Baltimore.

Born Feb. 27, 1920, in Cumberland, Md., he was the son of the late Benjamin and Lillian M. Ellsworth Seltzer.

His first wife, Elizabeth V. Grim Seltzer, died in 1982.

His second wife, Frances Kastner Seltzer, died in 1993.

He received his doctorate from Penn State College of Optometry in Philadelphia in 1953.

He began his practice of optometry in Baltimore, then continued in Cumberland, Md. He began a partnership at Mays Optical in Hagerstown in 1955, retiring in 1986.

From 1941 to 1945, he served in the U.S. Navy in the South Pacific aboard the USS Buchannan and the USS Antietam. He was awarded 10 battle stars, the Presidential Unit Citation and the American Campaign Medal.

He was a member of First Baptist Church of Hagerstown.

He was one of the founders and the first secretary of Hagerstown Colt Baseball League.

He was a member of Funkstown American Legion Post 211, and B.P.O.E. Lodge 378 in Hagerstown.

He is survived by one daughter, Bonnie M. Parks of Hagerstown; one son, William M. Seltzer of Hagerstown; five grandchildren; and four great-granddaughters.

Services will be held Wednesday at 10:30 a.m. at Gerald N. Minnich Funeral Home, 305 N. Potomac St., Hagerstown. The Rev. Charles E. Blackmon will officiate. Burial will be in Greenlawn Memorial Park in Williamsport.

Visitation will be at the funeral home 30 minutes prior to the service.

Mary G. Lander

Mary Gladys Lander, 95, of Avalon Manor Nursing Home, Hagerstown, and formerly of Hancock, died Monday, June 22, 1998, at her home.

Born Aug. 25, 1902, in Hancock, she was the daughter of the late William and Eliza Exline Exline.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Arthur Randolph Lander, in 1978.

She was of the Methodist faith and attended Long Hollow Chapel near Hancock.

She is survived by three daughters, Lorraine Clark and Madeline Kunkel, both of Hancock, and Emmogene Bivens of Hagerstown; seven grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by three sisters, Edith Schetrompf, Bessie McCusker and Annie Bowman; three brothers, William "Bill" Exline, Elmer Exline and John Exline; and one granddaughter, Melanie C. Besteman.

Services will be Thursday at 11 a.m. at Grove Funeral Home, 141 W. Main St., Hancock. The Rev. Glenn Jones will officiate. Burial will be in Hancock Presbyterian Cemetery.

The family will receive friends today from 7 to 9 p.m. at the funeral home, which will be open from 2 to 9 p.m.

Harry Seltzer

Dr. Harry Seltzer, 78, of 10900 Clinton Ave., Hagerstown, who died Monday, June 22, 1998, was preceded in death by a brother, Charles H. Seltzer.

Doris R. Breitweiser

UKIAH, Calif. - Doris Ruth Breitweiser, 81, of Ukiah, and formerly of Hagerstown, died Monday, June 15, 1998, at Ukiah Hospital.

She was the daughter of the late Joseph S. and Madge L. Dornblaser Foltz.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Carl D. Breitweiser Sr.

She is survived by four children, Carl Daniel Breitweiser Jr. of Nevada, Donald Breitweiser of California, Judith Files of Hagerstown and Suzanne Bucci of West Virginia; five sisters, Phyllis Schmidt, Josephine Recupito, Norma Fuller, Madelyn Foltz and Connie Kimmel; six grandchildren; and 11 great-grandchildren.

There will be no funeral or memorial service.

Arrangements were by Eversole Mortuary, Ukiah.

James E. Socks

FUNKSTOWN - A memorial service will be held for James Edgar Socks, of Funkstown, who died Tuesday, June 16, 1998, on Saturday at 2 p.m. at Minnich Funeral Home, 415 E. Wilson Blvd., Hagerstown. The Rev. Ted Haas will officiate.

Visitation will be Saturday one hour prior to the service at the funeral home.

Charles B. Wood

NEWARK, Del. - Charles Blough Wood, 61, of Newark and Newport News, Va., and formerly of Hagerstown, died Sunday, June 21, 1998, at his home.

He was born April 27, 1937, in Denton, Md.

He was employed in flight management at Felker Army Airfield.

A Vietnam War veteran, he served in the U.S. Air Force.

He is survived by his wife, Betty A. Wood; one daughter, Priscilla Wood-Jester of Newark; one son, Charles Daniel Wood of Newark; one sister, Frances Voght of Greensboro, Md.; two brothers, Earle Wood of Denton and James Wood of Fenwick, Md.; and two grandchildren.

Services will be Saturday at 10 a.m. at St. John's Roman Catholic Church, Main Street, Newark. The Rev. Richard A. Reissman will officiate. Burial will be in Immaculate Conception Cemetery, Elkton, Md.

Visitation will be Friday from 7 to 9 p.m. at Robert T. Jones and Foard Funeral Home, 122 W. Main St., Newark.

Memorial donations may be made to St. John's Holy Angels Church, c/o Robert T. Jones and Foard, 122 W. Main St., Newark, Del. 19711.

Harry R. Hesson Jr.

WINTER PARK, Fla. - Harry R. Hesson Jr., 68, of 3425 Bougain Villa Drive, died Monday, June 22, 1998, at his home.

Born in Washington County, he was the son of the late Harry R. and Thelma M. Knepper Hesson Sr.

Before retiring, he owned and operated The Pine Room in Hagerstown; and Penny Pinchers Bar in Winter Park.

He served in the U.S. Marine Corps during the Korean War.

He was a member of Hagerstown Masonic Lodge 217 AF&AM; Winter Park Masonic Lodge 239 AF&AM; Tall Cedars of Lebanon; Scottish Rite of Cumberland, Md.; American Legion Post 242 Winter Park; LOOM 766 of Orlando, Fla.; and Western Maryland Sportsman Club at Dam 4.

He is survived by his wife, Mary M. Cline Hesson; three daughters, Debra D. Hesson of Norfolk, Va., Cathy L. Hesson of Wilmington, N.C., and Erin G. Woolshoeger of Baltimore; two stepsons, Raymond Potts and Gregory Potts, both of Hanover, Pa.; four sisters, Joan Lizer of Tampa, Fla., Mary Ann Kriner of Hagerstown, Nickie Sue Myers of Clear Spring and Patty Binkley of Mercersburg, Pa.; one grandson; and two great-grandchildren.

Masonic memorial services will be held Friday at 7 p.m. at Gerald N. Minnich Funeral Home, 305 N. Potomac St., Hagerstown. Burial will be in Leitersburg Lutheran Church Cemetery.

Visitation will be Friday one hour prior to the service at the funeral home.

Charles F. Ruby

Charles F. Ruby, 83, of 13419 Maugansville Road, Hagerstown, died Tuesday, June 23, 1998, at the Veterans Affairs Medical Center, Martinsburg, W.Va.

Born April 3, 1915, in Baltimore, he was the son of the late William Henry and Lottie Marie Smith Ruby.

He was employed by the Washington Suburban Sanitary Commission.

A World War II veteran, he served in the U.S. Army in the Southwest Pacific.

He was of the Methodist faith.

He was a life member of Disabled American Veterans 14; and W.D. Byron Post 1936 Veterans of Foreign Wars.

He is survived by his wife, Margaret L. Ruby; one son, Charles F. Ruby II of Hagerstown; five sisters, Violet Weible, Ruth Healey, Dolly Ward, Lina Campbell and Shirley Moore, all of Baltimore; one brother, Vernon L. Ruby of Baltimore; and three grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by one sister, Irene Rider; and three brothers, Earl Ruby, Robert Ruby and Daniel Ruby.

Services will be held at the convenience of the family. Burial will be in Baltimore National Cemetery, Baltimore.

There will be no viewing.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the charity of one's choice.

JoAnne Briscoe

JoAnne Briscoe, 47, of 663 Hayes Ave., Hagerstown, died Tuesday, June 23, 1998, at Washington County Hospital.

Born Sept. 12, 1950, she was the daughter of George N. and Viola V. Briscoe McCann of Hagerstown.

In addition to her parents, she is survived by six sisters, Victoria Barnes and Lisa Young, both of Anaheim, Calif., Patricia McCann, Toni Alexander, Joyce Marion and Sandra Smith, all of Hagerstown; and two brothers, Ronald E. McCann and James N. McCann, both of Hagerstown.

Services will be Friday at 1 p.m. at Gerald N. Minnich Funeral Home, 305 N. Potomac St., Hagerstown. The Rev. Robert Dell will officiate. Burial will be in Rose Hill Cemetery.

Visitation will be today from 6 to 8 p.m. at the funeral home.
