Gladys L. Harner

Gladys Lucille Harner, 71, of Hagerstown, formerly of Williamsport, died Wednesday, April 22, 1998, at her home.

Born Nov. 25, 1926, in Harpers Ferry, W.Va., she was the daughter of the late Frank Emmanuel and Nora Daley Dillow.

She was a homemaker.

She was a member of Williamsport United Methodist Church.

She is survived by her husband, Victor Roy Harner; two daughters, Victoria H. Jones and Judy C. Gist, both of Hagerstown; one son, the Rev. Victor E. Harner of Jarrettsville, Md.; four sisters, Estelle Upwright or Kearneysville, W.Va., Marge Giacobetti of Philadelphia, Lucy Mae Havens of Holiday, Fla., and Dorothy Lee Dignazio of Charles Town, W.Va.; one brother, Frank E. "Manny" Dillow of Harpers Ferry; three grandchildren; and one great-granddaughter.

She was preceded in death by one son, Victor R. Harner; four sisters, Mary Appell, Grace Hardy, Edna Dillow and Mary Ellen Armstrong; and one brother, Thomas Lee Dillow.

Services will be Saturday at 9:30 a.m. at the Albert L. Leaf Memorial Chapel of the Osborne Funeral Home, 425 S. Conococheague St., Williamsport. The Rev. Richard A. Kroll and the Rev. Victor E. Harner will officiate. Burial will be in Greenlawn Memorial Park, Williamsport.

The family will receive friends Friday from 7 to 9 p.m. at the funeral home, which will be open Friday after 9 a.m. for the convenience of friends and family.

Memorial donations may be made to the American Heart Association, 322-324 E. Antietam St., Hagerstown, Md. 21740.

William D. Hain Jr.

William David "Mickey" Hain Jr., 62, of 1031 Lindsay Lane, Hagerstown, died Thursday, April 23, 1998, at his home.

Born April 28, 1935, in Hagerstown, he was the son of the late William David Hain Sr. and Kathleen Jane Poet Hain.

He was employed by Charlton Brothers, retiring in 1997 after 38 years. He then operated a consulting firm dealing with transportation safety.

A veteran of the U.S. Navy, he served during the Korean War.

He was a member of St. Mary's Catholic Church.

He also was a member of B.P.O. Elks Lodge 378, Funkstown American Legion Dixon Troxell Post 211, and Knights of Columbus.

He is survived by his wife, Melody Carbaugh Hain; two daughters, Laura Ann Hain of Hagerstown and Lisa Marie Kinna of Keedysville; two granddaughters; and a grandson.

A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated Monday at 9:30 a.m. at St. Mary's Catholic Church, 224 W. Washington St., Hagerstown, with the Rev. George A. Limmer as celebrant. Burial will be in Rose Hill Cemetery in Hagerstown.

Friends may call Sunday from 7 to 9 p.m. at Douglas A. Fiery Funeral Home, 1331 Eastern Blvd. North, where prayers will be said at 7 p.m.

Nola L. Kuhlman

Nola Lee Kuhlman, 69, of 11912 Pheasant Trail, Hagerstown, died Thursday, April 23, 1998, at Washington County Hospital.

Born March 3, 1929, in Cumberland, Md., she was the daughter of the late Melvin and Catherine Campbell Barnard.

She was a member of St. Mary's Catholic Church.

She is survived by her husband, Paul E. Kuhlman of Hagerstown; a daughter, Susan E. Gordon of Columbia, Md.; two sons, Paul E. Kuhlman II of Poolesville, Md., and Richard L. Kuhlman of Hagerstown; three sisters, Kathleen Rider of Hagerstown, Doris Crabtree of Cumberland and Majorie Yeagle of Baltimore; a brother, Robert Barnard of Hancock; and 11 grandchildren.

A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated Saturday at 9:30 a.m. at St. Mary's Catholic Church, 224 W. Washington St., Hagerstown, with the Rev. George A. Limmer as celebrant. Burial will be in Cedar Lawn Memorial Park, Hagerstown.

Visitation will be today from 3 to 5 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. at Douglas A. Fiery Funeral Home, 1331 Eastern Blvd. North, where prayers will be said at 8 p.m.

Charles E. Roulette

SHARPSBURG - Charles Ellsworth Roulette, 83, of Sharpsburg, died Thursday, April 23, 1998, at Washington County Hospital.

Born Sept. 26, 1914, in Sharpsburg, he was the son of the late John Walter and Myrta Irene Snavely Roulette.

He was a 1936 graduate of Shepherd College in Shepherdstown, W.Va.

He was employed by the Washington County Board of Education for 25 years as a teacher and as a vice principal at North Potomac Junior High School for 15 years.

He was a member of Sharpsburg United Church of Christ, where he taught the Men's Sunday School Class for 40 years.

He was a former director of Sharpsburg Bank, former director of Sharpsburg Lions Club and a member of state and national retired teachers' associations, and Shepherd College Alumni Association. He played clarinet in the Hagerstown Municipal Band.

He is survived by his wife, L. Albina Roulette, whom he married July 23, 1938; a daughter, Alice "Skip" Lushbaugh of Sharpsburg; two sisters, Charlotte Davis of Sharpsburg and Louise DeLauder of Halfway; and a brother, R. Earl Roulette.

He was preceded in death by a sister, Anna Pitzer; and two brothers, Walter F. Roulette and John J. Roulette.

Services will be held Saturday at 10:30 a.m. in the chapel of Bast Funeral Home, 7606 Old National Pike, Boonsboro. The Rev. Richard G. Hembrock will officiate. Burial will be in Mountain View Cemetery, Sharpsburg.

The family will receive friends at the funeral home today from 7 to 9 p.m.

Charles E. Johnson

HAGERSTOWN - Charles Edward Johnson, 70, of 154 Buttercup Drive, died Thursday, April 23, 1998, at Washington County Hospital.

Born Nov. 8, 1927, in Maplesville, he was the son of the late Charles and Alma Zittle Miller. He was raised and adopted by his late aunt, Minnie Johnson.

He was employed by GTE, retiring in 1988 after 25 years. He formerly was employed by Fairchild Aircraft, Federal Land Bank, Columbia, S.C., and NASA.

A veteran of U.S. Army Air Force, he served with occupation forces in Japan after World War II.

He was a member of St Paul's Lutheran Church of Clear Spring.

He is survived by his wife, Alma Miles Johnson; two daughters, Cheryl Ann Grossnickle of Waynesboro, Pa., and Susan Kaye Wilson of Lancaster, Calif.; two sons, Troy Edward Johnson of Hagerstown and Michael David Johnson of Lancaster; two grandchildren; three step-grandchildren; a niece and a nephew.

He was preceded in death by a sister, Alice Norris.

Services will be Monday at 1:30 p.m. at Donald E. Thompson Funeral Home, 13607 National Pike, Clear Spring. The Rev. Thomas Perry will officiate. Burial will be in Cedar Lawn Memorial Park, Hagerstown.

The family will receive friends Sunday from 7 to 9 p.m. at the funeral home.

Joseph C. McQuillen

FREDERICK, Md. - Joseph Carl McQuillen, 80, of Edenton in Frederick, formerly of Brunswick, Md., died Thursday, April 23, 1998, at his home.

Born July 27, 1917, in Strawsburg, Va., he was the son of the late Joseph Martin and Rhulie Hawkins McQuillen.

He was a salesman for Schlitz Brewing Co. in Frederick until his retirement.

He was a member of Sports Hall of Fame in Frederick County. As a young man, he played baseball for the New York Yankees AA affiliate in Kansas City, Mo.

He received the Brunswick distinguished citizen award.

He is survived by a son, Richard Carl McQuillen; a brother, Jack McQuillen; and four grandsons, Brian McQuillen, Rickey McQuillen, Ryan McQuillen and Rory McQuillen.

Services will be Monday at 10:30 a.m. at Donald B. Thompson Funeral Home, 31 E. Main St., Middletown, Md. The Rev. Donald L. Turley of Zion Lutheran Church will officiate. Burial will be in Mount Olivet Cemetery, Frederick.

The funeral home will be open Sunday from noon to 9 p.m. The family will receive friends Sunday from 7 to 9 p.m.

Annabelle Mary Shank

MIDDLETOWN, Md. - Annabelle Mary Shank, 86, of 7008 Church Road, died Wednesday, April 22, 1998, at Frederick Memorial Hospital.

Born April 11, 1912, she was the daughter of the late Edgar and Esta Fink Rohrback.

She was preceded in death by her husband, George Franklin Shank, in 1965.

She was a member of Locust Valley First Church of God, Middletown.

She is survived by a daughter, Janet L. Taulton of Middletown; three grandchildren, Sheila Brumage of Middletown, Gloria Yazdani of Hagerstown and James Leroy Shank of Kearneysville, W.Va; and seven great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by a son, James Leroy Shank.

Services will be Saturday at 10:30 a.m. at Donald B. Thompson Funeral Home, 31 E. Main St., Middletown. Burial will be in Locust Valley Bible Church Cemetery, Middletown.

The family will receive friends today from 7 to 9 p.m. at the funeral home.

John E. Snyder

John E. Snyder, 57, of Hagerstown, died Wednesday, April 22, 1998, at Washington County Hospital.

Born Dec. 16, 1940, in Hagerstown, he was the son of the late Austin and Evelyn Snyder Harne.

He graduated from South Hagerstown High School in 1958.

He was employed as a Maryland state trooper for 23 years, retiring in 1984.

He was a member of First Brethren Church in Hagerstown.

He also was a member of North American Rod and Gun Club.

He is survived by two daughters, Nicole Meredith Snyder and Lisa Cam Truax, both of Hagerstown; a son, John Allen Snyder of Hagerstown; three brothers, Rodney Harne of Goldsboro, N.C., Jim Harne of Winchester, Ky. and Greg Harne of Waynesboro, Pa.; and a grandson.

Services will be held Saturday at 10 a.m. at Davis Funeral Home in Smithsburg, with Pastor Bruce Foster officiating. Burial will be in Rest Haven Cemetery, Hagerstown.

The family will receive friends today from 7 to 9 p.m. at the funeral home.

Ernestine F. Gordon

KEEDYSVILLE - Memorial donations for Ernestine Ford Gordon, 79, of 44 S. Main St., who died Friday, April 17, 1998, may be made to Salem United Methodist Church, P.O. Box 25, Keedysville, Md. 21756.

Calvin L. Cook

Calvin L. "Cookie" Cook, 76, of 1140 Stonecroft Court, Hagerstown, died Monday, April 20, 1998, at Colton Villa Nursing Home.

Born Sept. 29, 1922, he was the son of the late Harry and Dora Cook.

He graduated from North Street School.

He had worked at Hilton Hotel in Washington, D.C. as a chef, and at Dutch Kitchen in Hagerstown.

A U.S. Army veteran, he received the Good Conduct Medal, the World War II Victory medal and the American Campaign Medal.

He was a member of the Zion Baptist Church.

He is survived by two nieces, Betty Stoner and Dorothy E. Keats, both of Hagerstown; two nephews, Gary L. Cook of Washington, D.C., and Mwamba Bilal Rahman of Hagerstown; and a friend, Hilda Carter of Hagerstown.

He was preceded in death by two sisters, Dorothy Williams and Hester Cook; and three brothers, Marlin Cook, Howell Cook and Paul Cook.

Services will be held Saturday at 11 a.m. at Second Christian Church. The Rev. Roseanne Duckett will officiate. Burial will be in Rose Hill Cemetery.

The family will receive friends at the church one hour prior to the service.

Arrangements are by Watson Funeral Home, Hagerstown.
