Newton B. Spielman

WILLIAMSPORT - Newton Boone Spielman, 92, of 16505 Virginia Ave., Homewood Nursing Home, and formerly of Big Pool, died Monday, April 13, 1998, at the home.

Born Sept. 30, 1905, in Stotler's Crossroads, W.Va., he was the son of the late Issac Newton and Edith Eugenia Michael Spielman.

He was a farmer.

He was a member of Mount Tabor Lutheran Church in Clear Spring.

He is survived by his wife of 67 years, Mary Heberly Myers Spielman of Williamsport; two daughters, Dorothy Sanborn of Hagerstown, and Mary Jane Spickler of Clear Spring; one sister, Katie Cantrell of Tampa, Fla.; five grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by three sisters, Mary E. Spielman, Mildred E. Tedrick and Virginia R. Tedrick; two sons, Richard N. Spielman and Robert N. Spielman; one foster sister, Daisy Bohrer; and two grandsons.

Services will be held Thursday at 2:30 p.m. at Mount Tabor Evangelical Church, Fairview. The Rev. Stephen Amundson, the Rev. Dennis Whitmore and the Rev. Willard Rahn will officiate. Burial will be in St. Paul Cemetery in Clear Spring.

The family will receive friends today from 7 to 9 p.m. at Donald E. Thompson Funeral Home, 13607 National Pike in Clear Spring.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Mount Tabor Lutheran Church, c/o Don Spickler, 14854 Hicksville Road, Clear Spring, Md. 21722.

Paul L. Andrews

Paul Leroy Andrews, 74, of 12315 Richwood Drive, Hagerstown, died Monday, April 13, 1998, at Washington County Hospital.

Born July 4, 1923, in Washington County, he was the son of the late Robert Jacob and Gladys Mae Day Andrews.

He was employed by Gray Concrete Co., retiring in 1986. He previously was employed by Colonial Hardwood Flooring for 32 years.

A veteran of World War II, he served in the U.S. Army.

He was a member of Otterbein United Methodist Church and the Seniors.

He was a charter member of AMVETS Post 10; and American Legion, Funkstown Post 211.

He is survived by his wife, Catherine Lewis Andrews; one daughter, Deborah E. Lightner of Shepherdstown, W.Va.; one son, Donald L. Andrews of Williamsport; three brothers, Oscar Andrews of Williamsport, James Andrews of Rohrersville and John Andrews of Satillo, Pa.; and one granddaughter.

Services will be held Thursday at 11 a.m. at Minnich Funeral Home, 415 E. Wilson Blvd., Hagerstown. The Rev. Stephen D. Robison, and the Rev. Ann V. Atkins will officiate. Burial will be in Rest Haven Cemetery, with military services conducted by American Legion Morris Frock Post 42.

The family will receive friends at the funeral home today from 7 to 9 p.m.

Daniel W. Mason

HANCOCK - Donations in the memory of Daniel William Mason, 81, of Orchard Ridge Road, who died Sunday, April 12, 1998, may be made to Hospice of Washington County, 101 E. Baltimore St., Hagerstown, Md. 21740; or Hancock Rescue Squad Inc., 14734 Warfordsburg Road, Hancock, Md. 21750.

Robert J. DiPietro

FAIRFAX, Va. - Robert James DiPietro, 58, of Fairfax, died Friday, April 3, 1998.

He was the son of Mae DiPietro of Hagerstown.

In addition to his mother, he is survived by three sons, Michael DiPietro, Timothy DiPietro and Anthony DiPietro; and two brothers, Richard DiPietro and Joseph DiPietro.

A Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated Monday, April 6, at 11 a.m. at St. Leo's Catholic Church, 3700 Old Lee Highway, Fairfax.

Visitation was Sunday, April 5, at Everly Funeral Home, 10565 Main St., Fairfax.

The family received friends at his home after the burial, Saturday, April 11, at 11 a.m. at Fairfax Memorial Park.

Memorial donations may be made to Hospice of Northern Virginia.

Robert Addison

Robert Addison, 61, of 56 Broadway, Hagerstown, died Sunday, April 12, 1998, at Washington County Hospital.

Born Sept. 11, 1936, in Baltimore, he was the son of Estella Addison of Baltimore and the late Raymond Addison.

He was an employee of Crossroads, Hagerstown.

Services will be Thursday at 10:30 a.m. at Gerald N. Minnich Funeral Home, 305 N. Potomac St., Hagerstown. The Rev. J. Norman Mayer will officiate.

Visitation will be Thursday 30 minutes prior to the service at the funeral home.

Nicole B. Sterling

Nicole B. Sterling, 26, of 771 Morningside Ave., Hagerstown, died Monday, April 13, 1998, at her home.

Born Nov. 12, 1971, in Hagerstown, she was the daughter of Margarette H. Lange Davis of Hagerstown and the late Chester Eugene Davis.

She was employed with Citicorp.

She was a member of Fountaindale Elementary PTA.

In addition to her mother, she is survived by her husband, John "Bam" Anthony Sterling; one son, Tyler Evon Sterling, at home; one sister, Beatrice L. Schildtknecht of Hagerstown; one brother, Chester E. Davis Jr. of Hagerstown; maternal grandmother, Brumstaroa Lange of Germany; one nephew; and aunts and uncles.

Services will be Friday at noon at Gerald N. Minnich Funeral Home, 305 N. Potomac St., Hagerstown. The Rev. George Nathan Bell will officiate. Burial will be in Rest Haven Cemetery.

Visitation will be Friday one hour prior to the service at the funeral home.

Pearl A. Grimes Jr.

FREDERICK, Md. - Pearl Ambrose Grimes Jr., 69, of Wilson Place, died Wednesday, April 15, 1998, at Frederick Memorial Hospital.

Born Dec. 5, 1928, in Potomac, Md., he was the son of the late Pearl Ambrose and Mamie Butt Grimes Sr.

He retired in 1985, as a plumber at the U.S. Soldiers and Airmans Home in Washington, D.C., after 29 years.

He was a member of Brook Hill United Methodist Church of Yellow Springs, Md.

He is survived by his wife of 47 years, Juanita Comegys Grimes; two daughters, Bonita Provo of Cascade and Brenda Grimes of Kensington, Md.; two sons, David Ambrose Grimes of Frederick and Daniel Kelly Grimes of Walkersville, Md.; two sisters, Jeanette Reeves of Falls Church, Va., and Carol Potter of Washington state; one brother, Edgar Grimes of Laurel, Md.; seven grandchildren; one great-granddaughter.

Memorial services will be held Saturday at 11 a.m. at Brook Hill United Methodist Church, 8946 Indian Springs Road, Yellow Springs. The Rev. Conrad O. Link will officiate. Burial will be at the convenience of the family.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Brook Hill United Methodist Church, 8946 Indian Springs Road, Frederick, Md. 21702.

Arrangements are by Stauffer Funeral Homes, Frederick.

Willard A. Younker

Willard Allen "Bus" Younker, 70, of 17301 Diane Drive, Hagerstown, died Wednesday, April 15, 1998, at Washington County Hospital.

Born in Pectonville on Oct. 28, 1927, he was the son of the late John Verde and Hazel Virginia Shives Younker.

He retired from Mack Trucks in 1986. He previously was employed by M.S. Johnson, Hershey Ice Cream and Breyers Ice Cream.

He worked in the air conditioning and refrigeration field.

A veteran of the U.S. Navy, he served during World War II and the Korean War.

He was of the Protestant faith.

He was a member of Joseph C. Herbert Post 222 American Legion in Clear Spring, AARP, and Mack Ten Pin Bowling League.

He was a hunter and fisherman.

He is survived by his wife of 43 years, Charlotte Mae Kline Younker; one daughter, Lisa Mumma of Clear Spring; one son, Steven Allen Younker of Big Pool; one sister, Fay Younker of Hancock; two brothers, Bruce O. Younker of Hagerstown and Herbert E. Younker of Clear Spring; and three grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by two brothers, Gary Younker and Donald Younker.

Services will be held Saturday at 2 p.m. at Albert L. Leaf Memorial Chapel of Osborne Funeral Home, 425 S. Conococheague St., Williamsport. The Rev. C. Walter Hock will officiate. Burial will be in Parkhead Cemetery in Big Pool, with military graveside services conducted by Joseph C. Herbert Post 222 American Legion.

The family will receive friends today from 7 to 9 p.m. at the funeral home, which will be open after 9 a.m.

Kenneth N. Ashby

Kenneth Nathaniel Ashby, 55, of 102A W. Bethel St., Hagerstown, died Tuesday, April 14, 1998, at his home.

Born Nov. 27, 1942, in Hagerstown, he was the son of the late Napoleon Thomas and Ivern G. Ashby.

He attended North Street School and South Hagerstown High School.

He had been employed by Moller Pipe Organ Co.

He served in the U.S. Army.

He was a member of Second Christian Church.

He is survived by two sons; five sisters, Barbara Crew, Janet Broadus, Deborah Ashby, Shirley Thomas and Lisa Thomas, all of Hagerstown; five brothers, Layton Ashby, Ronald Ashby, Donnis Ashby, Dennis Ashby and Vincient Thomas, all of Hagerstown; one aunt; nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by an aunt and an uncle.

Services will be held Saturday at noon at Second Christian Church, 65 W. North St., Hagerstown. The Rev. Roseanne Duckett will officiate. Burial will be in Rest Haven Cemetery.

A viewing will be held at the church one hour prior to the service.

Arrangements are by Watson Funeral Home, Hagerstown.

Franklin C. Swain Sr.

HANCOCK - Franklin C. Swain Sr., 79, of Roberts Road, died Wednesday, April 15, 1998, at Washington County Hospital in Hagerstown.

Born Oct. 29, 1918, in Little Orleans, Md., he was the son of the late Herbert and Amanda Belle Crawford Swain.

He retired in 1984, after 13 years, as foreman with Asplundah Tree Experts Co.; was employed in the 1950s by Fairchild Aircraft Co.; and later he worked as a carpenter.

He was of the Protestant faith.

He is survived by his wife, Lula A. Shoemaker Swain, whom he married June 14, 1947; two daughters, Mary Lou Mullen of Berkeley Springs, W.Va., and Linda Jean Wolfe of Warfordsburg, Pa.; one son, Herbert J. Swain of Hancock; three sisters, Mildred Klink of Frostburg, Md., Velma Miller and Wilda Younker, both of Greencastle, Pa.; three brothers, Lloyd Swain of Needmore, Pa., James B. Swain of Little Orleans, and Wendell Swain of Hagerstown; and eight grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by one son, Franklin C. Swain Jr.; one sister, Mabel Swain; and one brother, Elmer Swain.

Services will be held Saturday at 11 a.m. at Grove Funeral Home, 141 W. Main St., Hancock. The Rev. Darryl McClain will officiate. Burial will be in Piney Plains United Methodist Cemetery in Little Orleans.

The family will receive friends today from 7 to 9 p.m. at the funeral home, which will be open from noon to 9 p.m.
