Paul E. Gregory
SOUTH LYON, Mich. - Paul E. Gregory, 81, of South Lyon, died Saturday, Dec. 20, 1997, at the University of Michigan Hospital.
Born Aug. 16, 1916, in Fulton County, Pa., he was the son of the late Roy and Jessie Mae Wink Gregory.
He was a methods analyst for Western Electric in Michigan.
He was a veteran of World War II, serving with the U.S. Army.
He was a member of First United Methodist Church of South Lyon.
He was past grand chaplain in 1988-1989 of IOOF Oddfellows 438 in Hamburg, Mich., and a member of Masonic Lodge 186 in Northville, Mich., and Lovewell Hill Post of South Lyon.
He is survived by his wife, Helen B. Gordon Gregory, whom he married in 1942; four sons, Gordon Gregory of Berkeley Springs, W.Va., Jerel Gregory of Harrisonville, Pa., James Gregory of Pullman, Wash., and Robert Gregory of South Lyon; two sisters, Edna Weigel of Big Island, Ohio, and Maxine Cochren of Tiffin, Ohio; two brothers, Judd Gregory and Glenn Gregory, both of Tiffin; and two grandchildren.
Services will be Friday at 3:30 p.m. at Antioch Christian Church in Needmore, Pa. The Rev. Marion Nesselrodt will officiate. Burial will be in the adjoining church cemetery.
A viewing will be at the church Friday from 2 to 3:30 p.m.

James L. Crowther
BOONSBORO - James Laurence Crowther, 90, formerly of Tuscarora Pike, Martinsburg, W.Va., and recently of Fahrney-Keedy Memorial Home, died Sunday, Dec. 21, 1997.
Born Jan. 23, 1907, in Smithsburg, he was the son of the late George Rodney and Moss R. Crowther. He was raised in the Leitersburg area.
His wife, Margaret H. Crowther, died in 1982.
He was manager of John W. Bishop Co. for many years. He later managed Clamont Farms in Charles Town, W.Va., where he showed many prize Hereford cattle from the Tri-State area.
He is survived by two daughters, Betty Myers of Martinsburg, and Ann Cramer of Pasadena, Md.; one sister, Catherine Lehman of Hagerstown; three grandchildren; one great-grandson; and many nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by one sister and four brothers.
Services will be Tuesday at 11 a.m. at Brown Funeral Home in Martinsburg. The Rev. Robert S. Hill Jr. will officiate. Burial will be in Rosedale Cemetery.
The family will receive friends at the funeral home today from 7 to 9 p.m.

George F. Knobe Sr.
KNOXVILLE, Tenn. - George F. Knobe Sr., 84, of Knoxville, and formerly of Chattanooga, Tenn., died Sunday, Dec. 21, 1997, at Parkwest Hospital.
His wife, Frances Knobe, preceded him in death.
He retired from Tennessee Valley Authority after 34 years of service.
He is survived by four sons, George F. Knobe Jr. of Williamsport, Gary Knobe of Knoxville, Richard D. Knobe of St. Louis, and Philip E. Knobe of Alcoa, Tenn.; two stepsons, Herbert Abercrombie of Chattanooga, and Bob Gorsuch of Seattle; a special friend, Sue E. Baker; five grandchildren; one great-grandchild; and several stepgrandchildren.
Services will be Tuesday at 8 p.m. at Highland Memorial Chapel. The Rev. Maurice Branch will officiate. Family and friends will meet at 9:45 a.m. Wednesday at Highland Memorial Cemetery for a 10 a.m. burial service.
The family will receive friends at Highland Memorial Funeral Home, 5315 Kingston Pike, Knoxville, Tuesday from 6 to 8 p.m.
W. Byron DeLawter
CLEAR SPRING - William Byron DeLawter, 64, of Clear Spring, died Saturday, Dec. 20, 1997, at Veterans Affairs Medical Center in Martinsburg, W.Va.
Born May 8, 1933, in Williamsport, he was the son of the late Otho Victor and Eva Catherine Schroyer DeLawter Sr.
He was employed by PIE Nationwide in Hagerstown for 15 years, retiring in 1991. He was previously employed by Cushwa Brick in Williamsport for 19 years.
He served in the U.S. Army during the Korean War.
He was a member of Zion Evangelical Lutheran Church in Williamsport for 50 years.
He also was a member of Potomac Post 202 American Legion and Conococheague Tribe 84 IORed Men, both in Williamsport, and Retirees Club of Local Teamsters Union Chapter 992 in Hagerstown.
He is survived by his wife, Sharon Ann Lingle DeLawter; one daughter, Michaell Roxane DeLawter of Cumberland, Md.; two stepdaughters, Tracey Lynn Keel of Lebanon, Pa., and Kathleen Kay Shartle of Fredericksburg, Pa.; three sisters, Marie Gaylor and Melcora McKinley, both of Williamsport, and Reba Spickler of Hagerstown; one brother, Claude DeLawter of Hagerstown; one grandson; and three stepgrandchildren.
He was preceded in death by one brother, Otho V. DeLawter Jr.
Services will be Wednesday at 11 a.m. at Osborne Funeral Home, 425 S. Conococheague St., Williamsport. The Rev. W. Gregory Martin will officiate. Burial will be in Greenlawn Memorial Park in Williamsport, with military honors conducted by Morris Frock Post 42 American Legion in Hagerstown.
Friends may call at the funeral home Tuesday from 6 to 8 p.m. The funeral home will be open after 9 a.m. Tuesday for the convenience of family and friends.

Alverda Perkowsky
Alverda Perkowsky, 82, of 39C Elgin Blvd., Hagerstown, died Sunday, Dec. 21, 1997, at Washington County Hospital.
Born March 2, 1915, in Altoona, Pa., she was the daughter of the late John E. and Mina Gilmore Foster.
She retired from Fairchild Aircraft.
She was a member of Cedar Lawn Missionary Church.
She is survived by her husband, Morris Perkowsky; two sons, John Black of Mercersburg, Pa., and the Rev. Carl Black of Hagerstown; nine grandchildren; and several great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by one son, Walter L. Black.
Services will be Tuesday at 11 a.m. at Minnich Funeral Home, 415 E. Wilson Blvd., Hagerstown. Burial will be in Broadfording Memorial Gardens.
The family will receive friends at the funeral home today from 7 to 9 p.m.
Frances D. Shank
BOONSBORO - Frances Dorothy Shank, 75, of Fahrney-Keedy Nursing Home, and formerly of Sharpsburg, died Saturday, Dec. 20, 1997, at the nursing home.
Born June 7, 1922, in Williamsport, she was the daughter of the late Augustus and Maude Sanders Davis.
Her husband, Harry Eanes Shank, died in 1969.
She was employed in the dietary department of Washington County Hospital, retiring after many years of service. She was previously employed by Fairchild Aircraft in Hagerstown.
She was a member of Sharpsburg Church of the Brethren in Sharpsburg.
She is survived by one daughter, Cathy S. Beeler of Boonsboro; two sisters, Vergie Hurd of Boonsboro, and Jean Palmer of Hagerstown; one granddaughter; and a number of nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by three sisters and one brother.
There will be no viewing.
Graveside services will be today at 2 p.m. at Greenlawn Memorial Park, 127 Britner Ave., Williamsport. The Rev. Jerry Carpenter will officiate.

Edith M. Ray
Edith Minnie Ray, 85, of Ravenwood Nursing Home, Hagerstown, and formerly of Rice Road, Hancock, died Sunday, Dec. 21, 1997, at the nursing home.
Born Aug. 3, 1912, in Warfordsburg, Pa., she was the daughter of the late Harry and Bessie Seal Barnhart.
She retired from Morgan County War Memorial Hospital, Berkeley Springs, W.Va., where she worked as a housekeeper.
She was a member of Orchard Ridge First Church of God, Hancock, and was a member of the Ladies Aid.
She is survived by her husband, Chester L. Ray, whom she married Dec. 31, 1953; two daughters, Darlene Hollar of Buffalo, N.Y., and Norma Perrin of Bedford, Pa.; one son, Bernard Foor of Buffalo; one brother, Harry Barnhart Jr. of Hancock; nine grandchildren; and 12 great-grandchildren, and one great-great-granddaughter.
She was preceded in death by one son, Donnie Foor.
Services will be Wednesday at 1 p.m. at Orchard Ridge First Church of God, Orchard Ridge Road, Hancock. The Rev. Jeff Hawbaker will officiate. Burial will be in the adjoining church cemetery.
The family will receive friends at Grove Funeral Home, 141 W. Main St., Hancock, today from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m., and at the church Wednesday one hour prior to the service. For the convenience of friends the funeral home will be open today from 2 to 9 p.m.
Hazel I. Canfield
Hazel Irene Canfield, 79, of 771 S. Potomac St., Hagerstown, and formerly of Sharpsburg, died Sunday, Dec. 21, 1997, at her home.
Born March 2, 1918, in Sharpsburg, she was the daughter of the late Joseph Seibert and Mary Mae Jamison Churchey.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Robert Vaughn Canfield, in 1985.
She was employed by Interwoven Silk Mill in Martinsburg, W.Va., and Federal Silk Mill in Williamsport.
She was a member of Holy Trinity Lutheran Church, Sharpsburg.
She was a member of Women of the Moose Chapter 738, Martinsburg, and Antietam Post 236 American Legion Auxiliary, Sharpsburg.
She is survived by one daughter, Patricia A. Michael of Texas; two sons, Donald G. Canfield of Sharpsburg and Richard L. Canfield of Shepherdstown, W.Va.; four sisters, Ethel V. Semler and Margaret P. Hazelton, both of Hagerstown, Lillian L. Darner of Middletown, Md., and Alta Mae Crampton of Sharpsburg; three brothers, Joseph E. Churchey and Clifford S. Churchey, both of Sharpsburg, and Elwood L. Churchey of Hagerstown; 14 grandchildren; two stepgrandchildren; 18 great-grandchildren; and nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by one son, Robert E. Canfield; two sisters, Phyllis J. Gray and Dorothy I. Byrd; and two brothers, Charles M. Churchey and Fred F. Churchey.
Graveside services will be Wednesday at 2 p.m. at Mountain View Cemetery, Sharpsburg. The Rev. Blaine E. Feightner will officiate.
