Shaffer, Jr., Kenneth M.

Rev. Kenneth M. Shaffer, Jr. of Elgin, IL, formerly of Denton, MD, died Saturday, October 23, 2010, at the Seasons Hospice in Elgin, Il.

He was 64 years old.

Born in Greensboro, MD on December 10, 1945, Rev. Shaffer was the son of the late Kenneth M. Shaffer, Sr. and D. Pauline Bareford Shaffer.

He was a 1963 graduate of North Caroline High School.

Rev. Shaffer received his BA from Bridgewater College.

He became the Editor of Guide to Biblical Studies & Sunday School Curriculum Development for the Church of the Brethren Headquarters in Elgin, IL.

He then went to Bethany Theological Seminary and worked with the Doctor of Ministry Program.

He eventually became the head librarian after obtaining his Master of Arts and Library Science.

An ordained minister, he returned to Elgin in the position of Director of Brethren Historical Library and Archives until his death.

He co-authored several books with Graydon Snyder often used in training for the ministry and wrote numerous articles for various publications.

Rev. Shaffer enjoyed cooking and hosting dinner parties.

He also enjoyed the theater, travel, and both playing and teaching bridge.

He was a member of the Highland Avenue Church of the brethren (COB) in Elgin, the American Library Association, and the American Theological Library association.

Rev. Shaffer is survived by one sister, D. Jean Shaffer of Denton; two aunts: Betsy Bareford of Bowie, MD and Kathleen Cole of Denton; and numerous cousins.

The funeral services will be 2 PM Wednesday, October 27th, at the Denton Church of the Brethren, 108 S. Seventh St. in Denton where friends may visit with the family one hour prior to the service.

The interment will be in the Denton Cemetery, 24865 Meeting House Road in Denton.

In lieu of flowers, the family suggests for friends to send memorial donations to the Church of the Brethren, 1451 Dundee Ave., Elgin, IL 60120 or to the Bethany Theological Seminary, 615 National Road West, Richmond, IN 47374.

Parker, Jr., W. Allan

W. Allan Parker, Jr., 72 of Moyock, North Carolina, passed away at his home on Wednesday, October 20, 2010.

He was born in Cambridge on February 16, 1938, and was a son of the late Walter Allan Parker, Sr., and the late Frances Elizabeth Brannock Parker.

Mr. Parker attended schools in Cambridge.

On March 1, 1957 he was married to the former Catherine Ann Insley.

Some years ago he had worked at Cambridge Wire Cloth, and had also delivered the Baltimore News American.

Mr. Parker worked primarily as a waterman and also driven a truck for Wise Oil & Fuel for 15 years.

He was a member of the White Haven United Methodist Church in Church Creek, and was also a charter member of the Church Creek Vol. Fire Co.

Mr. Parker had made his home in North Carolina since 2003.

He had been in failing health for the past four years when he passed away at his home on Wednesday.

Survivors include his wife Catherine Ann Parker of Moyock, NC, one daughter Cheryl Workman and her husband Joseph Workman of Moyock, NC, two sons Richard A. Parker and his wife Lori Parker and Gary P. Parker both of Cambridge, two granddaughters Deanna Davis and Stephanie Morris, two grandsons Patrick Parker and Nathan Workman, two great granddaughter, Katherine Davis and Nicole Parker.

He is also survived by a step grandson Steve Workman, three sisters Wanda Parker of Florida, Pat Riggins and her husband Roy Riggins of Delmar, DE and Mary Todd and her husband Keith Todd of East New Market and several nieces and nephews.

A funeral service will be held on Monday at 12:00 PM at the Cambridge Wesleyan Church with the Rev. Joseph Harmon and the Rev. David Stewart officiating.

Interment will follow at Old Trinity Churchyard.

The family will receive friends during the hour preceding the service.

Memorial contributions may be made to the White Haven United Methodist Church, c/o Mrs. Jeanne Ewell, 5134 Paw Paw Point Road, Cambridge, MD 21613, or to the Church Creek Vol. Fire Co., P.O. Box 16, Church Creek, MD 21622.

Arrangements are being handled by the Thomas Funeral Home, P.A. in Cambridge.

Hurley, Joan M.

Joan M. “Buttercup” Hurley, of Cambridge, passed away at the Dorchester General Hospital on Saturday, October 23, 2010.

She was born in Cambridge on August 31, 1932, and was a daughter of the late Crawford O’Neill Murphy, Sr. and the late Beatrice Brohawn Murphy.

She attended schools in Cambridge and graduated from Cambridge High School in 1949.

As a young girl she was a Girl Scout.

Joan then attended Church Home Hospital Nursing School in Baltimore, where she graduated as a Registered Nurse at the age of 19.

On August 29, 1952, she was married to Jesse B. Hurley, Jr.

She worked at the Cambridge Maryland Hospital from 1952 until 1955 as a charge nurse in both the Operating Room and on the General Floor.

In 1955, she went to work at the Eastern Shore State Hospital where she helped develop the Medical Surgical Building and also worked as an instructor at the State Hospital LPN School.

In 1961, she and her husband opened Jess Jr’s. Body Shop as co-owner, company nurse as well as business manager.

Later, the business became Jess Jr’s & Sons Body Shop, and then expanded to Jess Jr’s Enterprises where she was currently serving as CEO and CFO.

Along with business and family obligations, she was involved with the Boy Scouts of American as a Den Mother for 9 years watching her oldest son become and Eagle Scout.

Joan also supported Little League Baseball, serving as an original Board Member of the Cambridge Little League and was one of the board member overseeing the construction of the Pliescott Little League Park.

From 1970 until 1975, she was appointed by the governor to serve on the Dorchester Co. Board of Education.

She was a Past Matron of Minerva Chapter # 50 O.E.S., and also served as Grand Electa in the Grand Chapter of O.E.S.

As a Grand Officer, she had visited 105 Eastern Star Chapters in the State of Maryland.

She was also Past President of the Ladies Shrine Club of the Eastern Shore.

She had been in failing health for several years and had been a patient at the Dorchester General Hospital since last Sunday morning when she passed away early Saturday morning with her family by her side.

Survivors include her husband Jesse B. Hurley, Jr. of Cambridge, two sons Jeffery O. Hurley, Sr. of Cambridge, Jed M. Hurley, Sr. and his wife Brenda of Cambridge, three grandchildren Jeffery O. Hurley, Jr., Jed “J.R.” Hurley, Jr. and Amanda Jo Hurley-Hubbard, one brother Douglas C. Murphy of Cambridge and several nieces, nephews and cousins.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by a son Jay L. Hurley, a granddaughter, Jessica Anne Hurley, a sister Mary L. Murphy and two brothers Barry B. Murphy and Crawford O. Murphy, Jr.

To benefit medical science, Joan donated her body for research.

Members of Roelma Chapter # 113 Order of the Eastern Star will conduct an Eastern Star Memorial service on Thursday afternoon at 2:00 PM at the Thomas Funeral Home, P.A. in Cambridge, which will be followed by a memorial service with the Rev. Fred Bahr and the Rev. Douglas M. Ridley officiating.

The family will receive friends from 12:30 PM until 2:00 PM on Thursday.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Joan M. Hurley Nursing Scholarship Fund, c/o the Bank of the Eastern Shore, P.O. Box 757, Cambridge, MD 21613.
