Nuttle, Mariana E.
Mariana E. Nuttle of Denton, MD, died Tuesday, December 7, 2010, at William Hill Manor Gardens in Easton after a period of declining health. She was 85 years old.
Mrs. Nuttle was born on January 26, 1925 in Easton, the daughter of the late J. Lester and Margaret (Pastorfield) Everngam. She lived in Denton all of her life. She was married to the late Byron H. "Barney" Nuttle on August 9, 1944. Except for a short while during World War II and immediately afterward they lived in Denton during their 58 years of marriage. Mr. Nuttle died November 27, 2002.
Mrs. Nuttle was a 1941 graduate of Caroline High School and an honors graduate of Washington College in 1945. She served in many areas of community life including the Caroline County and State of Maryland School Boards, the Chesapeake Community College Board of Directors, as well as on many town and county committees. She volunteered at the Caroline County Public Library and the Samaritan House. She was an avid birdwatcher and an active member of the Audubon Society.
Mrs. Nuttle is survived by three sons and a daughter-in-law: Jeffrey B. Nuttle of Denton, Charles T. and his wife Joan S. Nuttle of Richmond, Va., and John L. Nuttle of Easton; and a grandson, Ryan A. Nuttle and his wife Ashley of Richmond; and her brother, Michael H. Everngam and his wife Gisela of Durham, NH. In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by her brother, John L. Everngam.
There will be a memorial service at 3 PM Saturday, December 11th, in the Concord United Methodist Church on Federalsburg Highway, Federalsburg, MD. The burial will be private.
Instead of flowers, the family suggests memorial donations to the Samaritan House, 12 N 5th St, Denton, MD 21629 or the Caroline County Public Library, 100 Market Street, Denton, MD 21629.
Corkell, Roland "WICKY"
Roland R. "Wicky" Corkell, Sr. of Denton, MD, died Friday, October 8, 2010, at the Memorial Hospital in Easton, MD. He was 71 years old.
Born at home near Denton on October 29, 1938, Mr. Corkell was the son of the late John Wesley Corkell, Sr. and Ada Louise Thomas Corkell. He was a graduate of Caroline High School in Denton.
Mr. Corkell had lived and farmed in Caroline County all of his life. In addition to farming, he had worked for Choptank Electric in Denton, retiring in 1995.
Mr. Corkell is survived by his wife of 54 years, Joan E. Corkell of Denton; one son, Rick Corkell, Jr. of Denton, and a daughter, Janet E. Dove and her husband Bill of Denton; one brother, James Corkell of Harrington, DE, and a sister, Ginger Hessey of Denton; three granddaughters: Marley Moran, Kelsey Moran, and Emmy Moran; one step grandson, Chris Dove; a special nephew, Ronnie Lahman of Easton; and many other nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by two brothers: John Corkell, Jr. and Thomas Corkell; and three sisters: Anna Haggard, Catherine Houser, and Juanita Lasher.
Funeral services will be 2 PM Thursday, October 14th, at the Moore Funeral Home, P.A., 12 S. Second Street in Denton where friends may call from 6 until 8 on Wednesday evening. The interment will be in the Denton Cemetery.

Palmer, Paul Edward
Paul Edward Palmer departed this life October 20, 2010. Paul was born April 22, 1956 to the late Walter B. Palmer, Jr., and Genevieve Rugh Palmer.
Paul graduated from North Caroline High School in Denton, MD. While in high school, he was a member of the band and served as President of the school's National Honor Society chapter.
Paul received a B.A. in History from the College of William and Mary in 1978. He was elected to Phi Alpha Theta (history honorary society) and Mortar Board (honor society for seniors), played in the college band, sang in the Evensong choir at Bruton Parish, and served on the Student Advisory Committee, Student Activities Executive Council, and as Vice-Chair of the Dorm Council/Interhall. He received an M.A. in History from Tulane University in 1980.
During summers in high school and college, Paul worked for his family's business, Soil Service, in Denton. After graduating from Tulane, he worked as a commercial insurance underwriter for Aetna Insurance in New Orleans, and then as a commercial insurance agent for Keen, Battle Mead Company in Miami Lakes, Florida, for Repath Ltd in Boca Raton, Florida, and for All Risks Insurance in Fort Lauderdale, Florida.
Paul served on the Board of Governors for the Human Rights Campaign as one of two Governors from Florida. He was a member of the Oakland Park (Florida) Main Street Board and of the Oakland Park Kiwanis.
Paul is survived by his partner, Tony Sandonato, of Fort Lauderdale; his brother, Walter B. Palmer, III, and wife Mary Ann of Denton; uncles Louis Rugh and wife Connie of Greensburg, Pennsylvania, and Dale Palmer, Sr., and wife Ruth of Denton; aunts Hazel Rugh of Mount Pleasant, Pennsylvania, and Margaret Palmer of Denton; and cousins Amy Cribbs, Lori Carr, Alan Rugh, Sam Rugh, Tim Rugh, Paula Thayer, Dale Palmer, Jr., Ellen Palmer, Betsy Smith, and Linda Myers. In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by his partners Ron Vermillion and Bob Twiggs, and his uncles John C. "Jack" Palmer and Paul Rugh.
There will be a celebration of life of Paul Palmer at the home of Paul and Tony on October 24 from 2:00 to 5:00, and a memorial service at St. Luke's United Methodist Church in Denton on Saturday, November 6, at 7:00 P.M. Interment will be at Denton Cemetery.

Shaffer, Jr., Kenneth M.
Rev. Kenneth M. Shaffer, Jr. of Elgin, IL, formerly of Denton, MD, died Saturday, October 23, 2010, at the Seasons Hospice in Elgin, Il. He was 64 years old.
Born in Greensboro, MD on December 10, 1945, Rev. Shaffer was the son of the late Kenneth M. Shaffer, Sr. and D. Pauline Bareford Shaffer. He was a 1963 graduate of North Caroline High School.
Rev. Shaffer received his BA from Bridgewater College. He became the Editor of Guide to Biblical Studies & Sunday School Curriculum Development for the Church of the Brethren Headquarters in Elgin, IL. He then went to Bethany Theological Seminary and worked with the Doctor of Ministry Program. He eventually became the head librarian after obtaining his Master of Arts and Library Science. An ordained minister, he returned to Elgin in the position of Director of Brethren Historical Library and Archives until his death. He co-authored several books with Graydon Snyder often used in training for the ministry and wrote numerous articles for various publications.
Rev. Shaffer enjoyed cooking and hosting dinner parties. He also enjoyed the theater, travel, and both playing and teaching bridge. He was a member of the Highland Avenue Church of the brethren (COB) in Elgin, the American Library Association, and the American Theological Library association.
Rev. Shaffer is survived by one sister, D. Jean Shaffer of Denton; two aunts: Betsy Bareford of Bowie, MD and Kathleen Cole of Denton; and numerous cousins.
The funeral services will be 2 PM Wednesday, October 27th, at the Denton Church of the Brethren, 108 S. Seventh St. in Denton where friends may visit with the family one hour prior to the service. The interment will be in the Denton Cemetery, 24865 Meeting House Road in Denton.

Smith, H. Eugene
H. Eugene Smith, Sr. "Gene" of Denton, MD, died Sunday, December 12, 2010, in the Memorial Hospital in Easton, MD. He was 75 years old.
Born on February 14, 1935, Mr. Smith was the son of the late Eli and Lydia Smith. He grew up in Queenstown, MD. He had been a painter, a waterman, and had retired from the Town of Queenstown as the maintenance man.
Mr. Smith is survived by his wife, Pauline S. Smith of Denton; three sons: Gene Smith, Jr. of Denton, James "Jimmy" Smith, Sr. of Church Hill, MD, William Kevin Smith, Sr. of Denton; two brothers: Edward Smith of Grasonville, MD and Calvin Smith of American Corner, MD; two sisters: Betty Clark of Denton and Frances Hammond of Centreville, MD; 16 grandchildren and 14 great grandchildren; and his faithful best friend yellow lab, Lucky. He was preceded in death by one son, Edward Charles Smith, and two granddaughters: Mandy and Terri Smith.
Funeral services will be 12 NOON Wednesday, Dec. 15th, at the Moore Funeral Home, P.A., 12 S. second St. in Denton where friends may call one hour prior to the service. The interment will be in the Denton Cemetery.

Merrick, Elizabeth Chaney
Elizabeth Chaney Merrick of Denton, MD died Wednesday, December 15, 2010, at the Envoy of Denton. She was 96 years old.
Born July 20, 1914 in Mt. Airy, MD, Mrs. Merrick was the daughter of the late Dr. Irving D. Chaney and Olivia Talbott Chaney of Southern Maryland. She attended St. Mary's College of Maryland. Her husband, Charles Percival Merrick, died Sept. 9, 2005.
Mrs. Merrick was an active member of the Christ Episcopal Church in Denton, a Charter Member of the Caroline Garden Club and the Denton Unit of the Memorial Hospital Auxiliary. She served on the Memorial Hospital Board of Directors and had been an eight-year member of the Caroline County Democratic State Central Committee. She was a member of the Colonial Dames of America, the Daughters of the American Revolution, National Chapter of the Magna Charter Dames, and was a descendant of the Knights of the Garter.
Mrs. Merrick is survived by one son, Charles P. Merrick, III of Baltimore, MD and one daughter, Elizabeth (Betty) M. Hall of Easton, MD; five grandchildren and eight great grandchildren.
A memorial service was private.
