McFadden, Jr., Martin W.

Army

Martin W. McFadden, Jr., 66 of Cambridge, passed away at his home on Sunday, September 19, 2010. He was born in Baltimore on July 22, 1944, and was a son of the late Martin William and Margaret Ann Meredith McFadden, Sr.

He attended schools in Baltimore. He enlisted in the U.S. Army and served three tours in Vietnam and also served in Germany. He was awarded the Vietnam Service Medal with Three Bronze, Vietnam Cross of Gallantry, with Palm. Mr. McFadden was Honorably Discharged on March 6, 1973. After his discharge from the service he worked as a hair stylist in Baltimore for several years. Mr. McFadden moved to Cambridge some years ago to take care of his grandfather. He was a member of St. Paul's United Methodist Church in Cambridge, and had worked in construction and had also worked on the water. On June 1, 1984 he was married to the former Celeste Foxwell. He has been disabled since 1998. Mr. McFadden was a member of Dorchester Post # 91 American Legion. He enjoyed traveling around Cambridge in his wheelchair and meeting and talking with people. He had been in failing health for the past five years when he passed away at his home on Sunday morning.

Survivors include his wife Celeste A. McFadden of Cambridge, one son Martin W. McFadden III and his wife Sarah McFadden of Chester, VA, three daughters Elizabeth McFadden of Prince George, VA, twin daughters Brandie Lee Robinson and her husband Jeffrey Robinson and Terri Jean Andrews and her husband George Andrews and one brother James E. McFadden of Brooklyn Park. He is also survived by six grandchildren Amber McFadden, Harley Hubbard, Eddie McFadden, III, Angel Ly Andrews, Jeffrey “J.J.” Robinson, Jr. and Alexis Robinson.

A funeral service will be held on Friday afternoon at 2:00 PM at the Maryland Veterans Cemetery with the Rev. Fred Bahr officiating. The family will receive friends from 11:00 AM until noon on Friday at the Thomas Funeral Home, P.A. in Cambridge. Memorial contributions may be made to the Dorchester Co. Humane Society, P.O. Box 132, Cambridge, MD 21613.

Bock, Debbie

Deborah M. “Debbie” Bock, 53 of Salisbury, formerly of Cambridge, passed away on Monday September 20, 2010 at the Peninsula Regional Medical Center in Salisbury. She was born in Cambridge on May 12, 1957, and was a daughter of Herbert A. Moore, Jr. and Frances Schaefer Moore.

She attended schools in Cambridge, and graduated from Cambridge High School in 1975. Debbie also attended and graduated from Salisbury State University and later earned her Master’s Degree. She had been a school teacher at the Fruitland Primary School and later at the Willards Elementary School. Debbie later worked in Special Education working with children who had learning disabilities. She enjoyed cooking, making candy and doing crafts. She also enjoyed volunteering with the Children’s Theater of Delmarva. Debbie was a devoted mother, daughter and sister. She had been in failing health for several years and had been a patient at PRMC for two weeks when she passed away on Monday morning.

Survivors include two daughters Sarah M. Bock and Jenna M. Bock both of Salisbury, her mother and father Frances Moore and Herbert Moore of Cambridge, one sister Terry Hogan and her husband Jim Hogan of Preston, one brother Ricky G. Moore of Cambridge, one niece Misha Hogan of Preston, two cousins Mark Hurley of Houston, Texas and Gary Foxwell of Salisbury.

A funeral service will be held on Wednesday afternoon at 1:00 PM at the Thomas Funeral Home, P.A. in Cambridge with the Rev. Dustin Ives officiating. Interment will follow at Dorchester Memorial Park. The family will receive friends during the hour preceding the service. Pallbearers will be Carroll Larrimore, Mike Foxwell, Chris Foxwell, Kemper Cave, Kenny Smith and Bob Owens. Memorial contributions may be made to the Lupus Foundation of Maryland, 110 Painters Mill Road, Owings Mills, MD 21117.

Henry, Jr., Edwin M.

Navy

Edwin M. Henry, Jr., a former attorney and electrical engineer, died Monday, August 23, 2010, at his home in Ellicott City. He was 80. He was born in Cambridge, MD on June 26, 1930, son of the late Emma Lee Henry Clayton and Edwin M. Henry, Sr.

Mr. Henry graduated from Cambridge High School in 1947. Upon graduation he enlisted in the U.S. Navy and later attended the U.S. Naval Academy for two years. On February 2, 1952 he was married to his high school sweetheart Barbara Brittingham. He graduated from Johns Hopkins University with a Bachelors Degree in Engineering in 1957. For 14 years after graduation he was a radio transmission engineer at Westinghouse, working for various branches of the U.S. Military and intelligence community. Since 1969, Mr. Henry has made his home in Ellicott City, MD. He attended the University of Baltimore where he earned his law degree in 1972 and practiced law full-time until his retirement in 2007, at the age of 77. He was a 50 year member of Glen Burnie Lodge No. 213 A.F. & A.M., and a member of Cambridge Lodge No. 66 A.F. & A.M., Boumi Shriners, Royal Order of the Jesters, where he was a director in 2000, Ancient Accepted Scottish Rite, and Knights Templar. He was also a member of the Eastern Shore Shrine Club and Catonsville Shrine Club where he was president in 2004, Dorchester Historical Society, Howard County Historical Society and Men’s Eastern Shore Society of Baltimore City where he was president in 1988. Mr. Henry was a member of Bethany United Methodist Church in Ellicott City where he served on the Board of Trustees.

"Ed" was an outgoing person - never met a stranger. He was an avid reader, particularly of history and genealogy. Ed enjoyed his collections, including lighthouses and Eastern Shore books and memorabilia. He loved to travel, especially to Williamsburg, Cancun and Scotland.

Survivors include his wife of 58 years Barbara B. Henry of Ellicott City, two daughters Jo Pion and Kim Henry Reitz and their husbands Edward Pion of East New Market, MD and Richard Reitz of West Friendship, MD, four grandchildren Stephen E. Pion, Emily C. Pion, Katie Meredith Reitz and Christopher A. Reitz, one great grandchild Clayton F. Reitz and one step grandchild Michael E. Pion and his wife Addy Pion of Enola, PA, two step great grandchildren Avery J. Pion and Maggie A. Pion, one brother H. Keith Henry and his partner Steve Maslovich of Lewes, DE, one step sister Geri Creighton and her husband Donald Creighton of Salisbury, MD, sister-in-law Bobbie Brittingham of Easton, MD and several nieces and nephews.

The family will receive friends from 4:00 to 7:00 PM on Wednesday, August 25 at the Harry Witzke Funeral Home, 4112 Old Columbia Pike in Ellicott City, where members of Glen Burnie Lodge No. 213 will conduct a Masonic Memorial Service. A funeral service will be held at 10:00 AM on Thursday, August 26 at Bethany United Methodist Church, 2875 Bethany Lane in Ellicott City, MD with the Rev. David Simpson officiating. A graveside service will follow at 2:30 P.M. at Dorchester Memorial Park in Cambridge, MD. Pallbearers will be Richard Reitz, Edward Pion, Stephen Pion, Christopher Reitz, Dickey Lowry, Donald Jones, Leon Tschantre, W. Melvin Turner, William W. Deissler, John Roth and Bill Purnell. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Bethany United Methodist Church, 2875 Bethany Lane, Ellicott City, MD 21042. Local arrangements are being handled by the Thomas Funeral Home, P.A. in Cambridge.

Burton, Mark L.

Mark L. Burton, 55 of Cambridge, passed away at his home with his family at his side on Sunday, July 11, 2010. He was born in Cambridge on June 16, 1955 and was a son of Dorothy Gooch Burton and the late R. Julian Burton.

Mark attended schools in Cambridge and graduated from Cambridge High School in 1973. He worked for Charles E. Brohawn Bros. Contractors, and in 1975 he went to work with his brother at Ditch Witch in Salisbury. In June of 1976 he went to work with his father at Tri County Trenching Co. After his father passed away in 1988 he continued operating the business. On March 18, 1977 he married his High School sweetheart Cheri Eckels. Mark enjoyed hunting, fishing as well as boating. Mark had been in failing health since December when he passed away on Sunday morning.

Survivors include his wife Cheri L. Burton of Cambridge, one son Brandon P. Burton and his wife Krystal of Cambridge, and soon to be born grandson, one daughter Courtney L. Travers and her husband Harold W. Travers, Jr. of Cambridge, his mother Dorothy A. Burton of Cambridge, one sister Gail A. Robbins of Cambridge, three special nieces Melissa DeLuca, Allyson Eckels and Alyssa Eckels, mother in law and father in law Bonnie and Robert Foxwell of Easton. In addition to his father he was preceded in death by a brother Robert J. Burton, Jr. and his father in law, and best friend Norman Eckels.

A funeral service will be held on Friday afternoon at 1:00 PM at the Thomas Funeral Home, P.A. in Cambridge with Pastor David Stewart officiating. Interment will follow at Old Trinity Churchyard. The family will receive friends on Thursday evening from 6:00 to 8:00 PM at the Thomas Funeral Home, P.A. Pallbearers will be Brandon P. Burton, Harold W. Travers, Jr., Jeff Meredith, Sr., Jeff Neal, Carson Windsor, Chris Collison, Sr., Danny Adshead and Jeff Hurley, Sr. Memorial contributions may be made to the Coastal Hospital Foundation, P.O. Box 1733, Salisbury, MD 21802, or to the American Cancer Society, c/o Mrs. Doris Weber, 5163 Maple Dam Road, Cambridge, MD 21613.

Brittingham, Sandra H.

Sandra H. Brittingham, 66, of East New Market passed away on Thursday, October 28, 2010 at Dorchester General Hospital. She was born on June 22, 1944 in Rushden, Northamptonshire, England and was a daughter of the late Stanley and Edith Partridge Matson.

Mrs. Brittingham graduated from Elderton Joint Junior Senior High School class of 1962 in Elderton, PA. On October 5, 1968 she married Jesse L. Brittingham, Sr. She was a homemaker. She enjoyed being with her grandchildren. She also enjoyed sewing, canning vegetables, reading and cooking.

She is survived by her husband Jesse L. Brittingham, Sr. of East New Market, three children Jesse L. "Jay" Brittingham, Jr. and wife Penny of Cambridge, Michael M. Brittingham and wife Jeni Brittingham of Linkwood and Amanda K. Purnell and husband Shannon of East New Market, two step daughters Dawn Shorter of Cambridge and Lisa D'Onofrio of East New Market, seven grandchildren Matthew, Michael G., Jessica, Andrew, Brandon, Ashley and Emily Brittingham, 9 step grandchildren, 6 step great grandchildren, a sister Joan Kunkle of Spring Church, PA and two brothers Jack and Jerry Matson both of Spring Church, PA and numerous nieces and nephews.

Pallbearers will be Matthew Brittingham, Michael G. Brittingham, Lucas Patrick, BJ Middleton, James Keyser, Frank Whirley, Scott Elzey and Troy Hubbard.

A funeral service will be held on Wednesday, November 3, 2010 at 1 p.m. at Thomas Funeral Home, P.A. in Cambridge with Rev. Fred Bahr officiating. Interment will follow at Dorchester Memorial Park. Family will receive friends on Tuesday from 5 to 7 p.m. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions can be made in her name to the American Cancer Society, c/o Doris Weber, 5163 Maple Dam Road, Cambridge, MD 21613.

Sims, Jr., James Stanley

Army

James Stanley Sims, Jr., 86 of Cambridge passed away on Sunday, July 11, 2010 at Dorchester General Hospital. He was born in Patton, PA on February 23, 1924 and was a son James Stanley Sims and Charlotte Nickerson Sims.

During WWII he was assigned to the Army Specialized Training Program at NC State University and then served in Central Europe as Army Technician Fourth Grade, Battery C 627th Field Artillery Battalion.

He continued his education at Pennsylvania State University and received BSEE and MSEE degrees. He worked as an electronics engineer in Windsor, CT and Montgomery County, MD before joining Cambridge Scientific Industries in 1977. He retired in 1990 as Vice President of Engineering at CSI.

Jim loved the Chesapeake Bay and boating. He was a member of the Potomac Power Squadron, before moving to the Cambridge Power Squadron. He attained the rank of Navigator and taught Navigation for the Power Squadrons. He was a volunteer for Photo Records for St. Michael's Maritime Museum and was awarded a life membership for his service.

More recently, Jim served as Curator of Records and Intake for Dorchester County Historical Society. He was also a past Trustee and Trustee-Emeritus at DCHS.

He is survived by his wife, Nancy Jean McDougall Sims; a daughter, Karen Elizabeth Sims Sedell (Charles Gregory) of Waterford, CT; and a son Thomas Gregory Sims (Kalyn Prestel) of Howard County, MD. He also leaves six grandsons--Eric Sedell; and Taylor, Alex, Stephen, Matthew, and Luke Sims. Besides his parents, he is preceded in death by his sisters Ann MacDonald and Marjory Shapiro of Florida.

A memorial service will be held on Thursday, July 15, 2010 at 2 p.m. at Thomas Funeral Home, P.A. in Cambridge. Family will receive friends one hour prior to the service. In lieu of flowers, donations may be sent to Dorchester County Historical Society, 1003 Greenway Dr. Cambridge, MD 21613.

Borga, Helen S.

Helen S. Borga, 96 of Cambridge, passed away at the Chesapeake Woods Center in Cambridge on Saturday August 21, 2010. She was born in Cambridge on July 30, 1914, and was a daughter of the late Alfred J. and Lula Wingate Stack.

She attended schools in Cambridge. She was married to Paul F. Borga. Mr. Borga passed away on April 13, 1971. As a young woman she had worked at WT Grant’s in Baltimore. She later worked at Rob Roy Shirt Factory in Cambridge. Mrs. Borga enjoyed cooking, going to yard sales, antiquing and taking care of her flowers. Mrs. Borga was a devoted mother, grandmother and great grandmother. She had been a resident at Chesapeake Woods Center for almost four years where she passed away on Saturday morning.

Survivors include five daughters Bonnie Crismond and her husband Ray Crismond of Cambridge, Darlene Wroten of Cambridge, Wanda Mills and her husband Danny Mills of Cambridge, Dolly Holliday of LaVerne, CA and Billie Borga and her companion Trippe VanDyke of Perry, LA, ten grandchildren, 20 great grandchildren, two great great grandchildren and several nieces and nephews. She is also survived by three special caregivers Nancy Hudson, Jean Newcomb and Shannon Dawson. In addition to her husband she was preceded in death by a great granddaughter Rachael Shaw, two sisters Gladys Kyle and Isabelle Fox and two brothers Russell G. Stack and William W. Stack, a son in law George H. Wroten and a longtime companion of Dolly Holliday, Sammy Messina.

A graveside service will be held on Wednesday afternoon at 1:00 PM at the East New Market Cemetery with Rev. John H. Merritt officiating. Pallbearers will be Monty Holliday, Buster Mowbray, Kim Wright, Courtney Saunders, April Freeman and Shawn Crismond. Memorial contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society, c/o Mrs. Doris Weber, 5163 Maple Dam Road, Cambridge, MD 21613 or to Rescue Fire Co. Inc, P.O. Box 776, Cambridge, MD 21613. Arrangements are being handled by the Thomas Funeral Home, P.A. in Cambridge.

Lowman, Linda

Linda L. Lowman, 49, of Hebron passed away on Sunday, July 11, 2010 at her home. She was born in Fairfield, CA on January 20, 1961 and was a daughter of the late Edward and Henny Pederson Fender.

Ms. Lowman graduated from Smyrna High School. She was a truck driver. She loved her family and animals. Ms. Lowman also enjoyed playing bingo and going to the casino.

She is survived by a sister Patti Jones of Hebron, a brother Bruce Fender of Hebron, nieces Cindy Coker and companion Jed Todd of East New Market and Melissa Cook and husband Bryan of Vienna, a nephew Ricky Coker of Hebron, a great nephew Cole Coker, two great nieces Miranda Cook and Lilly Cook and a special friend who was like a sister of many years Vanessa Young.

Pallbearers will be Bryan Cook, Bruce Fender, Jed Todd, Kevin Cook, Ricky Coker and Cole Coker.

A funeral service will be held on Thursday, July 15, 2010 at 11 a.m. at Bay Country Church with Pastor Jason Bleyer officiating. Burial will follow at Dorchester Memorial Park. Family will receive friends one hour prior to the service. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions can be made in her name to the Thomas Funeral Home, P.A., 700 Locust Street, Cambridge, MD 21613 or to the American Cancer Society, c/o Doris Weber, 5163 Maple Dam Road, Cambridge, MD 21613.
