Hurley, Joan M.
Joan M. “Buttercup” Hurley, of Cambridge, passed away at the Dorchester General Hospital on Saturday, October 23, 2010. She was born in Cambridge on August 31, 1932, and was a daughter of the late Crawford O’Neill Murphy, Sr. and the late Beatrice Brohawn Murphy.
She attended schools in Cambridge and graduated from Cambridge High School in 1949. As a young girl she was a Girl Scout. Joan then attended Church Home Hospital Nursing School in Baltimore, where she graduated as a Registered Nurse at the age of 19. On August 29, 1952 she was married to Jesse B. Hurley, Jr. She worked at the Cambridge Maryland Hospital from 1952 until 1955 as a charge nurse in both the Operating Room and on the General Floor. In 1955 she went to work at the Eastern Shore State Hospital where she helped develop the Medical Surgical Building and also worked as an instructor at the State Hospital LPN School. In 1961 she and her husband opened Jess Jr’s. Body Shop as co-owner, company nurse as well as business manager. Later the business became Jess Jr’s & Sons Body Shop, and then expanded to Jess Jr’s Enterprises where she was currently serving as CEO and CFO. Along with business and family obligations she was involved with the Boy Scouts of American as a Den Mother for 9 years watching her oldest son become and Eagle Scout. Joan also supported Little League Baseball, serving as an original Board Member of the Cambridge Little League and was one of the board member overseeing the construction of the Pliescott Little League Park. From 1970 until 1975 she was appointed by the governor to serve on the Dorchester Co. Board of Education. She was a Past Matron of Minerva Chapter # 50 O.E.S., and also served as Grand Electa in the Grand Chapter of O.E.S. As a Grand Officer she had visited 105 Eastern Star Chapters in the State of Maryland. She was also Past President of the Ladies Shrine Club of the Eastern Shore. She had been in failing health for several years and had been a patient at the Dorchester General Hospital since last Sunday morning when she passed away early Saturday morning with her family by her side.
Survivors include her husband Jesse B. Hurley, Jr. of Cambridge, two sons Jeffery O. Hurley, Sr. of Cambridge, Jed M. Hurley, Sr. and his wife Brenda of Cambridge, three grandchildren Jeffery O. Hurley, Jr., Jed “J.R.” Hurley, Jr. and Amanda Jo Hurley-Hubbard, one brother Douglas C. Murphy of Cambridge and several nieces, nephews and cousins. In addition to her parents she was preceded in death by a son Jay L. Hurley, a granddaughter Jessica Anne Hurley, a sister Mary L. Murphy and two brothers Barry B. Murphy and Crawford O. Murphy, Jr.
To benefit medical science, Joan donated her body for research. Members of Roelma Chapter # 113 Order of the Eastern Star will conduct an Eastern Star Memorial service on Thursday afternoon at 2:00 PM at the Thomas Funeral Home, P.A. in Cambridge, which will be followed by a memorial service with the Rev. Fred Bahr and the Rev. Douglas M. Ridley officiating. The family will receive friends from 12:30 PM until 2:00 PM on Thursday. In lieu of flowers memorial contributions may be made to the Joan M. Weber, Paul Henry

Paul Henry Weber, 63, of Cambridge passed away on Friday, February 26, 2010 at his home, after a lengthy illness. He was born in Cambridge on September 2, 1946 and was a son of the late Ernest Weber and Mona Cook Weber Cox.
Paul graduated from Cambridge High School in 1964. He served in the U.S. Army where he completed a Tour of Duty in Vietnam. On February 25, 1985 he married the former Deborah Christopher. Paul had worked for the Delmarva Power Plant in Vienna for 35 years. Among other things, Paul was an avid hunter who liked to fish and crab. He was an animal lover who trained hunting dogs and adored all of the many cats he owned or rescued over the years. Paul was an accomplished cook who loved growing much of his own food in a home garden. He was a family man who enjoyed taking his children swimming and vacationing. In his later years, Paul appreciated spending quiet time alone.
Paul is survived by his wife Deborah Christopher Weber of Cambridge; three children, Paul Jason Weber of Logan, Utah, Jeremy Michael Weber of Cambridge, and Robert Henry Burton III of East New Market; two grandchildren, Carson Weber and Samuel Weber; a brother, Ernest Weber of Salisbury; a sister, Linda Jackson of Chester; several nieces and nephews; and his beloved in-laws with whom he enjoyed spending time.
A funeral service will be held on Wednesday, March 3, 2010 at 1 p.m. at Thomas Funeral Home, P.A. in Cambridge with Mr. James Dayton officiating. Family will receive friends one hour prior to the service. Burial will follow at Dorchester Memorial Park. Pallbearers will be William Christopher, Michael Christopher, Edward Pridgen, James Dayton, George Wright, Jr., David Glover, Richard Parks, and Steve Jarman.

Richardson, Donald L.

Donald L. Richardson, 87, of Cambridge passed away at the University of Maryland Medical Center in Baltimore on Sunday, September 26, 2010. He was born in Church Creek on February 2, 1923 and was a son of the late Donald and Lucille Dunnock Richardson.
Mr. Richardson attended the first seven years of school at Church Creek Elementary and graduated from Cambridge High School Class of 1940. He also graduated from Goldey Beacom College in Wilmington, DE with an AA Degree in Accounting/Business Administration. He graduated from The Chevrolet School of Modern Merchandising and Management in Detroit, Michigan. Mr. Richardson owned and operated the former Chevrolet/Oldsmobile dealership B.J. Linthicum's in Cambridge until he sold the business in 1980.
Mr. Richardson served in the U.S. Army, where he was a combat veteran of World War II as a staff sergeant with the 29th Infantry Division, Company B 175th Infantry Regiment. He was awarded the Combat Infantry Badge, Purple Heart Medal, Good Conduct Medal, American Theater Ribbon, European African Middle Eastern Theater Ribbon and the World War II Victory Ribbon. His battles and Campaigns include Normandy, Northern France, Rhineland and Central Europe. Mr. Richardson was honorably discharged from the service on December 15, 1944.
On August 13, 1954 he was married to the former Norma Lee Ruark.
He was a member of the Taylor's Island United Methodist Church, where he was a member of its administrative board. He was also a member of the American Legion Post 91, Veterans of Foreign Wars, Dorchester County Historical Society, Cambridge Elks Lodge, Cambridge Moose, Old Trinity Association, Tidewater Farm Club, Dorchester County Farm Bureau, National Rifle Association and a honorary member of both the Church Creek Volunteer Fire Company and Rescue Fire Company. Mr. Richardson was a member of the Cambridge Rotary Club, where he received the club's Lifetime Achievement Award for his 39 years of perfect attendance and two time Paul Harris Fellow.
He is survived by his wife Norma Lee Richardson of Cambridge and many cousins. Besides his parents, Mr. Richardson is preceded in death by a brother Hazelton Earl Richardson.
Pallbearers will be Ed Lynch, Gary Pinder, Ray McElroy, Teri Griffith, Adam Kelly, Darrian Bromwell, Larry Dail, Richard Messick and Jim LeGates. Honorary pallbearers will be John White, Walter Tanner, Wendell Foxwell, William Moosegian and Stanley Tall.
A funeral service will be held on Thursday, September 30, 2010 at 1:30 p.m. at Whitehaven United Methodist Church in Church Creek with Rev. Robert G. Kirkley officiating. Burial will follow at Old Trinity Churchyard. Family will receive friends on Wednesday from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. at Thomas Funeral Home, P.A. in Cambridge and from 12:30 p.m. until 1:30 p.m. at the church. Ellis, Albert C.
Albert C. Ellis, Jr., 82, of Cambridge passed away on March 20, 2010 at his niece's home in Odenton, MD. He was born on March 22, 1927 at Baltimore and was a son of the late Albert C. Ellis, Sr. and Agnes Watts Ellis.
He attended and graduated from Baltimore City Public Schools. He served in the United States Navy for two terms during WW II and the Korean War. He also served in the U.S. Navy Reserves. On July 5, 1953 he married the former Joycelyn Baier. Mrs. Ellis passed away on June 4, 2001. He worked as a butcher and also a meat cutter. He was a member of Composite Lodge No 212 A.F. & A.M., Boumi Shriner's and he had been active in the Motor Corps, and had been President of the Motor Corps. He was also a member the Eastern Shore Shrine Club.
He is survived by a daughter Denise Albright of Baltimore, three sons T.R. Ellis of Hudson, Jacob Ellis of Middlesex and Alex Ellis of Middlesex, five grandchildren, two sisters Doris Ketland of Williamsport, MD and Naomi John of Glen Rock, PA and Eva Watts, a beloved friend and companion. In addition to his parents and his wife he was preceded in death by a son Jonathan Ellis.
A graveside Masonic Service will be held on Thursday, March 25, 2010 at 1 p.m. at Old Whitemarsh Cemetery near Trappe. Arrangements are in the care of the Thomas Funeral Home, P.A. in Cambridge.
Mowbray, Joan G.
Joan G. Mowbray, 67, of Cambridge passed away on Friday, July 9, 2010 at her home. She was born in Cambridge on October 11, 1942 and was a daughter of the late David P. and Lucille Parrott Garrett.
She graduated from Easton High School class of 1960. Mrs. Mowbray also attended and graduated 1962 from nursing school at Dorchester Hospital where she received her LPN. Mrs. Mowbray continued to work at Cambridge Hospital and retired in 1980. On August 24, 1967 she married John L. Mowbray. He passed away on July 28, 2003. She enjoyed sewing, puzzles, gardening and helped with the school plays at Cambridge South Dorchester High School.
She is survived by two sons John L. Mowbray, Jr. of Cambridge and Bernard G. Mowbray and wife Jennifer of Cambridge, two sisters Linda Garrett of Baltimore and Susie Shores of Trappe, a brother John Garrett of Bishops Head and many nieces and nephews.
A funeral service will be held on Tuesday, July 13, 2010 at 1 p.m. at Thomas Funeral Home, P.A. in Cambridge with Rev. A. Delmer Willey, Jr. officiating. Burial will follow at Our Lady of Good Counsel Church Cemetery in Secretary. Family will receive friends one hour prior to the service.
Haring, Michael L.

Michael Lee Haring, 52, of Cambridge, died Monday, August 2 of injuries suffered in a motor vehicle accident on the Tappan Zee Bridge in Nyack, New York. Mr. Haring was traveling on vacation with his wife, Carole, and their Black Lab, Sophie, who were not injured in the accident.
Mike was born in Cambridge on August 14, 1957, the son of the late Arthur Stuart Haring and Doris Wheeler Haring of Cambridge, and was a lifelong resident of that city. In his early years he was both a Cub Scout and Boy Scout and also played Little League baseball. He had a great appreciation for music and played the drums in school bands. He was a 1975 graduate of Cambridge High School where he ran cross country, track and played on the Raider’s football team. During his high school years he was a defenseman for the Cambridge Lacrosse Club and he continued to play lacrosse through college. In 1980, he graduated from Salisbury State College, where he served as a tutor, was on the Dean’s list, and was a member of the Psi Chi National Honor Society. He continued his education throughout his career graduating from the Eastern Shore Police Training Center in 1981, the FBI National Academy in 1992, and ultimately earning a Master’s of Science in Management from Wilmington College in 1999. Mike spent his entire personal and professional life serving the citizens of Dorchester County, his family and friends. His volunteer activities ranged from teaching Sunday school at Grace Church to working with the EagleMan Triathlon. Those who knew Mike will remember he was always the first to lend a hand to anyone in need or any worthy cause. Mike began his professional career of public service as a dispatcher for the City of Cambridge Police Department. After college he went to work for the Dorchester County Sheriff’s Office and advanced through the ranks to Sergeant, Chief of Operations, and finally to Chief Deputy Sheriff over a distinguished and decorated 20 year career. In 1991 Mike earned a Governor’s Citation for his service to Dorchester County. He retired from his law enforcement career at the rank of Captain.
Growing up in a family of firefighters, Mike also felt the calling to the fire service. He was a member of the Rescue Fire Company of Cambridge (RFC) for many years where he served as Secretary, Ambulance Captain and was honored as Firefighter of the Year. In 1998, Mike continued his public service to the citizens of Dorchester County by joining the professional staff of the Board of Education as Transportation Manager. For the last three years, Mike was the Safety and Energy Manager for the district, taking the lead role in the district’s repeatedly earning national recognition for its energy conservation. In his personal time, Mike was usually found serving, assisting, or entertaining his family, friends, and neighbors. He enjoyed spending time with his friends, traveling, and scuba diving, especially with the David Herring family of Hurlock. Through his extensive Scuba training and experience, Mike had attained a Master Diver level of certification. He was also a member of Elks Lodge 1272 and even though he was retired from Law Enforcement, he remained active with the FBI National Academy Association.
In 2001, he married his long-time companion, Carole McClain, who survives him. He was the proud stepfather of Stephen Andrews of Easton, Maryland, and his wife, Dawn; Jennifer Sullivan of Natick, Massachusetts, and her husband, John; and Michael Andrews of Hopkinton, Massachusetts, and his wife, Amanda. His grandchildren are Alex, Berkley, Matthew, Colby and William Andrews; Cheshire and Braeden Sullivan and Addison and Rylan Andrews. All his stepchildren and grandchildren survive him. Likewise, he is survived by his sister, Judy Zemko of Florida; his niece, Lisa Hanley and her husband, Army Lt.Col. Thomas Hanley, currently stationed in Florida, and their daughters Katie and Chelsea. He was preceded in death by his brother Donald “Stu” Haring who died on April 9, 2010 and is survived by Donald’s wife, Pat of Trappe, her daughter, Gail Lesser of Charlottesville, Virginia, and her husband, Jan, and their children Ryan and Eric.
A memorial and celebration of life service will be held at 2 PM Sunday, August 15, at the Cambridge-South Dorchester High School auditorium with the Rev. Mary Ann Farnell officiating. The family will receive friends from noon to 2 PM. Memorial contributions can be made to the American Cancer Society, c/o Mrs. Doris Weber, 5163 Maple Dam Road, Cambridge, MD 21613. Tyndall, Ada S.
Ada S. Tyndall, 83, of Salisbury formerly of Cambridge passed away on Monday, August 2, 2010 at John B. Parsons Assisted Living in Salisbury. She was born in Baltimore on July 9, 1927 and was a daughter of the late Charles R. Smith, Sr. and Mabel Nittinger Smith.
Mrs. Tyndall attended schools in Wicomico County. She was married to Alonza Tyndall. He passed away in March of 1984. Mrs. Tyndall lived in Salisbury from 1930 until 1963. In 1963 she moved to Cambridge until 2008. She was owner/operator of A.S. Tyndall Coins. Mrs. Tyndall was best known for her interest in coins and the Cambridge Coin Club. She enjoyed showing horses, liked to fish, crab and garden. Mrs. Tyndall was a member of the VFW Ladies Auxiliary in Morrison, CO and the American Legion Post 91 in Cambridge.
She is survived by her children William E. Tyndall and his wife Christine of East New Market, Aida M. Kling and husband Steven of Marshall, VA and Melvin R. Tyndall and wife Gayleen of Springfield, IL, several grandchildren Elisabeth Tyndall, Brian Tyndall, Allison Kling, Rebecca Kling, Heather Tyndall and Keith Tyndall and several nieces and nephews. Besides her parents and her husband, Mrs. Tyndall is preceded in death by two brothers Charles R. Smith, Jr. and Melvin J. Smith, two sisters Mabel E. Smith and Beulah Harr.
A graveside service will be held on Thursday, August 5, 2010 at 2 p.m. at Wicomico Memorial Park in Salisbury with Rev. A. Delmer Willey, Jr. officiating. Family will receive friends from 11a.m. to 12 noon at Thomas Funeral Home, P.A. in Cambridge.
