Laurie, Nina Rosenna
Nina Rosenna (Freeman) Laurie was born in Perryman, Maryland on September 1, 1912 to the Late Mary Frances (Tildon) Freeman and Alexander Freeman. After the death of her mother, she went to live with her maternal grandmother, Hattie Christy Galloway and Step-grand father, Willem Galloway, who enrolled her in school (Anderson Institute) in Havre de Grace, Md. It was then that she joined St. James A.M.E. Church.
After her grandmother's death when she was 16 years old, Nina went to work as a maid at Aberdeen Proving Ground. On weekends she visited with her friend, Elizabeth Jackson. One day after becoming stranded in Havre de Grace because of bad weather, her friend, Elizabeth, called a cab driver that she knew name John Laurie to take Nina back to the base. John was Smitten and after several years won her heart and they were married on October 29, 1939.
Nina learned to play piano and organ at an early age when Rev. Brown of Manley Chapel (St. Matthews A.U.M.P Church) needed a musician and asked who wanted to take lessons. Nina volunteered, and soon after, her grandmother found an organ for $3.00. Nina practiced right from the hymnal. She began to play for Mt. Zion Baptist Church under the pastorate of Rev. Red, and then Rev. M.C. Phillip before returning to St. James A.M.E. after Rev. Arthur Mitchell gave up his organist position.
Nina loved music, and tried her hand at composing. She would send many of her compositions off to publishing companies and was not too surprised when she heard one of her compositions done by someone else. She accompanied The Little Wonders Quartet on their Sunday morning local radio program. For several years, John would erect speakers on the roof of their home on Revolution Street and Nina would play Christmas Carols for the entire neighborhood on her favorite Hammond organ.
Nina worked for many years beside her beloved John, building their business on Revolution Street. Nina also liked to sew and knit and made most of her children's clothes. She enjoyed gardening and planted everything from tulips to squash in her backyard.
On June 22, 2011, at age 98, Nina Laurie went home to be with the Lord. She was preceded in death by her husband, John; and her daughters, Juanita Laurie, Shirley (Brooks) Jenkins, and Yvonne Scott. She is survived by son, John Laurie Jr. (Elizabeth) of Aberdeen, Md. and daughters, Dr. Rosalie Turner (Edward) of Adelphi, Md. and Rev. Cynthia Laurie of Havre de Grace. She leaves 11 grandchildren: Lisa White, Stephanie Cunningham, Tia Scott, Nicole Turner, Erica Aungst, John Laurie, III, Mark Laurie, Richard Brooks, III, Robert Jenkins III, Alan Aungst, and Steven Aungst. In addition, she leaves 10 great grandchildren, and 2 great great grandsons.
Visitation will be Monday June 27, 2011, 10a.m.-12p.m.with funeral starting 12 p.m. at St. James A.M.E., 615 Green St, Havre de Grace, MD. Burial will be in St. James United Cemetery, Havre de Grace, MD.
