LESTER R. PLATTER
GRANTSVILLE - Lester Ray Platter, 75, of 673 Platter Road, Grantsville, died Thursday, July 17, 1997, at Garrett County Memorial Hospital, Oakland.
Born January 13, 1922, near Grantsville, he was a son of the late Irvin B. and Mintie (Durst) Platter. Mr. Platter was a member of Laughlin Church of the Brethren and Mountain Top Wagon Train. Surviving are four sons, Lester, Jr., Gary, Terry, and Rick Platter, all of Meyersdale, Pa.; a daughter, Dorothy Reiber, Meyersdale; a brother, Luther Platter, Grantsville; four sisters, Orpha Wisseman, Hilda Younkin, and Melva Platter, all of Grantsville, and Marie Willison, Frostburg; 16 grandchildren; and a great-granddaughter.
Friends will be received at the Newman Funeral Home, Grantsville, on Saturday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Services will be conducted at the funeral home on Sunday at 2 p.m. with the Rev. Ross Glotfelty officiating.
Interment will be in Durst cemetery.
EDITH M. NESTOR
FROSTBURG - Edith Mercy Nestor, 73, of 115 Maple Terrace, Frostburg, died Friday, Aug. 22, 1997, at Sacred Heart Hospital Hospice Unit after a lengthy illness.
Born Sept. 18, 1923, in Brimpton, England, she was the daughter of the late Arthur T. and Nora (Sexton) Hutchins. She also was preceded in death by a sister, Lily Moss; and a nephew.
Mrs. Nestor was a British war bride and came to the United States in 1946. She was a postal worker and a bus conductress in England. She was a homemaker and a former employee of Woolworth's and Drug Fair of Frostburg. She was a devoted wife of 53 years, a loving mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother.
Surviving are her husband, Britton Junior Nestor; one daughter, Valerie I. Davis and husband Roger, Cresaptown; one brother, Reginald Hutchins and wife Pauline, Columbus, Ohio; one sister, Marjorie Bowman, England; four grandchildren Lisa Rafferty, Cresaptown, Brian Rafferty, Hyndman, Pa., Michelle McGee and husband James, Cumberland, and Terry Klein and husband Dave, Cresaptown; four great-grandchildren, Matthew Portmess, Trevor Klein, Jesse Rafferty, and Wade McGee; and several nieces and nephews.
Friends will be received at the Durst Funeral Home, Frostburg, on Sunday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m.
Services will be held at the funeral home on Sunday at 9 p.m., following the evening visitation, with the Rev. Harold R. McClay Jr. officiating.
At Mrs. Nestor's request, her body will be cremated.
Internment will be in Marsh cemetery, Tacy, W.Va.

AUDREY L. NETHERS
CUMBERLAND - Audrey Lillian Nethers, 98, of Allegany County Nursing Home, formerly of Queen City Towers and Oldtown, died Sunday, July 27, 1997, at Sacred Heart Hospital.
Born June 27, 1899, in Beamis, W.Va., she was the daughter of the late Remembrance and Margaret (Reel) Bennett. She also was preceded in death by her husband Cecil M. Nethers; one son, Kenneth Nethers; two daughters, Dorothy Patch and Iris Davis; one sister, Gretia Willis; two brothers, Clarence Bennett and Sherrick Bennett; and three grandsons.
Mrs. Nethers was a homemaker. She was a member of Oldtown United Methodist Church.
Surviving are one son, Cecil D. Nethers, Las Vegas, Nev.; two daughters, V. Fay Duckworth and husband Ray, Oldtown; Janice M. Hersh and husband Robert, Temple Hills; one son-in-law, William C. Davis, Oldtown; six grandchildren, 15 great-grandchildren; and nine great-great-grandchildren.
Friends will be received at the Scarpelli Funeral Home, 108 Virginia Ave., Cumberland, on Tuesday from 7 to 9 p.m.
Services will be conducted at the funeral home on Wednesday at 10 a.m. with the Rev. Glenn F. Stevens Sr. officiating.
Interment will be in the Davis Memorial cemetery.
C. FREDERICK NEUS, SR.
CUMBERLAND - C. Frederick Neus Sr., 83, of Cumberland, died Wednesday, July 23, 1997, at Memorial Hospital Hospice.
Born July 27, 1913, in Cumberland, he was the son of the late Frederick Cody and Anna (Johnson) Neus. He also was preceded in death by one brother, W. Edward Neus.
Mr. Neus was a retired lieutenant for the Cumberland Fire Department and a U.S. Navy veteran of World War II. He was a member of SS. Peter and Paul Catholic Church, the American Legion Fort Cumberland Post No. 13, the Knights of Columbus Cumberland Council No. 586, and the Cumberland Outdoor Club.
Surviving are his wife, Angela E. (McGann) Neus; three sons, Charles F. Neus Jr. and wife Leta, Gary F. Neus and wife Lorraine, and Thomas R. Neus, all of Cumberland; three daughters, Marjorie L. Becker, Cumberland, Anna C. Harris and husband Cot, Ridgeley, W.Va., and Sharon M. Robinette, Cumberland; one sister-in-law, Hazel Neus, Cumberland; 15 grandchildren; and 17 great-grandchildren.
Friends will be received at the Scarpelli Funeral Home, 108 Virginia Avenue, Cumberland, on Friday from 3 to 5 and 7 to 9 p.m.
A Christian wake service will be conducted at the funeral home on Friday at 8:45 p.m.
Funeral Mass and Committal Service will be celebrated at SS. Peter and Paul Catholic Church on Saturday at 10 a.m. with the Rev. Vernon Busch, O.F.M., Cap., as celebrant.
Interment will be in Maryland State Veterans cemetery at Rocky Gap.
JOHN H. NEWHOUSE
CUMBERLAND - John H. Newhouse, 77, of the John F. Kennedy Apartments, died Wednesday, Oct. 22, 1997, at Ruby Memorial Hospital, Morgantown, W.Va.
Born May 28, 1920, in Cumberland, he was the son of the late John H. Newhouse, retired Cumberland Police Captain, and the late Cora R. (VanMeter) Newhouse.
He also was preceded in death by a brother, Richard Newhouse; and a sister, Betty Pirkey.
Surviving are children; grandchildren; a brother, William H. Newhouse and wife, Delores; a sister, Pearl Murphy; nieces; nephews; and a special friend, Ron Stevens.
At Mr. Newhouse's request, his body was cremated.
A graveside service will be held at Hillcrest Burial Park on Saturday, Nov. 1, 1997, at 1:30 p.m., with the Rev. Adam Grim officiating.
The George-Upchurch Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
ALICE E. NEWMAN
CUMBERLAND - Alice E. Newman, 89, formerly of the J.F.K. Homes, died Saturday, June 28, 1997, at the Cumberland Nursing Home.
Born Oct. 3, 1907, in Cumberland, she was the daughter of the late Harry Vance Males and Annie (Powell) Males. She also was preceded in death by her husband, Russell Newman; and one daughter, Marceline E. Davis.
Mrs. Newman was a member of the Cumberland Historic cemetery Association, and the McKendree United Methodist Church.
She was the last surviving member of her immediate family.
Surviving are five nieces, Mrs. Geraldine Gordon and Mrs. June Ashby, Cumberland, Mrs. Melville Pergerson, Annapolis, Mrs. Patricia Jones, Seabrook, and Mrs. Pearl Gay Huff, Indiana; one nephew, William E. Peck, Cumberland; and a number of great-nieces, great-nephews, cousins and special friends in Waterloo, Iowa, where she resided for 35 years.
Friends will be received at the Leasure-Stein Funeral Home, Cumberland, on Tuesday from 6 to 9 p.m.
Services will be conducted at the McKendree United Methodist Church on Wednesday at 1 p.m. with the Rev. William Merki officiating.
The body will be taken to the church one hour prior to the services.
Interment will be in Sunset Memorial Park.
ANN M. NEWNAM
LAVALE - Ann Moore Newnam, 86, of LaVale, died Wednesday, March 26, 1997, at her home.
Born Dec. 4, 1910, in Durham, N.C., she was the daughter of the late Daniel C. and Estella (O'Neal) Moore. She also was preceded in death by her first husband, Robert H. Shaffer, who died in 1945 in World War II; her second husband, William K. Newnam; and a grandson, Danny Dressman.
Mrs. Newnam was a member of SS Peter and Paul Catholic Church, Catholic Daughters of America, LaVale Homemakers Association, and the American Federation of Musicians. Surviving are her son, Richard S. Shaffer and wife Sue, Manassas, Va.; daughter, Jo Ann Dressman and husband Larry, LaVale, with whom she resided; two stepdaughters, Mary K. Ritter, Lusby, and Carol A. Miley, Denver, Colo.; two brothers, John D. Moore, Los Angeles, Calif., and Thomas P. Moore, LaVale; 11 grandchildren; and 14 great-grandchildren.
Friends will be received in the Hafer Chapel of the Hills Mortuary, 1302 National Highway, LaVale, on Sunday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m.
Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Monday at 10 a.m. with the Rev. Father Vance Pastorious as celebrant.
Interment will be in SS Peter and Paul Catholic cemetery.
