JAMES F. MCFARLAND
CUMBERLAND - James Franklin McFarland, 84, of the Cumberland Nursing Home, died Monday, April 7, 1997, at the nursing home.
Born July 26, 1912, in Garrett, Pa., he was the son of the late Harry Washington McFarland, and the late Anna Mary (Lohr) McFarland. He also was preceded in death by his wife, Elizabeth Gertrude (Eyler) McFarland, on Sept. 14, 1991; and five brothers, Paul, Charles, Kyle, Edward, and Earl McFarland.

Mr. McFarland retired from Kelly Springfield Tire Co., where he worked in the food service department. He was a member of BPOE Elks 63; Order of the Moose 271; and the Fraternal Order of Eagles 245. He was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II, and attended Calvary United Methodist Church, Ridgeley, W.Va..

Surviving are two sons, James Harry McFarland and wife Betty, Louisville, Ky., and Paul Terry McFarland and wife Ruth, Apollo Avenue, Bowling Green City; two sisters, Louise Sembower, Meyersdale, Pa., and Virginia Leacock, Pinellas Park, Fla.; five grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.

Friends will be received at the Merritt-Adams Funeral Home, 404 Decatur St., Cumberland, on Tuesday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m.

Services will be in the funeral home on Wednesday at 10 a.m. with the Rev. Samuel Seletyn officiating.

Interment will be in Sunset Memorial Park.

VIRGINIA C. MCFARLAND
CUMBERLAND - Virginia C. McFarland, 98, of the Frostburg Village Nursing Home, formerly of Cumberland, died Tuesday, Dec. 16, 1997, at Sacred Heart Hospital.
Born May 5, 1899, in the Cove, she was the daughter of the late Joel and Hannah (Linninger) Diehl. She also was preceded in death by her husband, John McFarland, in 1972.

Mrs. McFarland was the last surviving member of her immediate family. She was a member of St. Paul's Lutheran Church.

Survivors include her daughter, Sara Myers, Cumberland; one son, John McFarland, Norfolk, Neb.; three grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

Friends will be received at the Upchurch Funeral Home, 202 Greene St., Cumberland, on Friday from 7 to 9 p.m.

The funeral service will be held at the funeral home on Saturday at 10 a.m. with the Rev. John J. Duffus officiating. Interment will be in Sunset Memorial Park.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Alzheimers Association, 540 E. Belvedere Ave., Suite 202, Baltimore, MD 21212.

JESSIE C. MCGEE
LONACONING - Jessie Catherine (Katie) McGee, 98, of 71 Douglas Ave., Lonaconing, died Friday, May 2, 1997, at her home.
Born Sept. 22, 1898, in Lonaconing, she was the daughter of the late Donald Edward and Elizabeth Ann (Donald) Miller. She also was preceded in death by her husband, James Gibson McGee, on June 26, 1973; two sons, James Edward McGee and Alexander Monroe McGee; and one sister, Janet A. Sigler.

Mrs. McGee was an 85-year member of the First United Methodist Church, Lonaconing, and a lifetime member of the Senior Citizens of Georges Creek. She was also a member of the United Methodist Church Womens Society. Mrs. McGee was the last member of her immediate family.

Surviving are six daughters, Jessie Catherine Whiteman, Cresaptown, Elizabeth M. Broadwater, Corriganville, June Althea Parrish, Essex, Wilma Jean Beeman, Barton, Alice Marie Edgar, Baltimore, and Winona Leaker, Barton; 22 grandchildren; 54 great-grandchildren; 57 great-great-grandchildren; and 2 great-great-great-grandchildren.

Friends will be received at the Eichhorn-McKenzie Funeral Home, Lonaconing, on Sunday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m.

Services will be held at the funeral home on Monday at 1 p.m. with the Rev. Richard Mortimore officiating.

Interment will be in Green cemetery, Garrett County.

Pallbearers will be her grandsons.

The family requests expressions of sympathy take the form of memorials to the First United Methodist Church or Georges Creek Library.

ELVIS J. PHILLIPS
FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. - Elvis J. Phillips, 28, of Fort Lauderdale, died Sunday, June 22, 1997, at his home.
Born July 12, 1968, in Cumberland, he was the son of the late Jerome J. Phillips Sr. and the late Edna Virginia George Phillips.

Surviving are one sister, Tammy Sue Maus, Hagerstown, Md.; one brother, Jerome J. Phillips Jr., Elyria, Ohio; paternal grandmother, Wanita Kendall, Elyria, Ohio; maternal grandmother, Mary George, Ridgeley, W.Va.; three aunts; and six uncles.

Arrangements were handled by Infinity Cremation, Fort Lauderdale.

JESSIE C. MCGEE
LONACONING - Jessie Catherine (Katie) McGee, 98, of 71 Douglas Ave., Lonaconing, died Friday, May 2, 1997, at her home.
Mrs. McGee was preceded in death by one brother John D. Miller; and one sister, Mary Elizabeth Wilson.

Services will be held at the Eichhorn-McKenzie Funeral Home, Lonaconing, on Monday at 1 p.m. with the Rev. Richard Mortimore officiating.

Interment will be in Green cemetery, Garrett County.

Grandsons will serve as pallbearers.

The family requests that expressions of sympathy take the form of memorials to the First United Methodist Church or Georges Creek Library.

L. KATHERINE MCGEE
CUMBERLAND - L. Katherine "Kate" McGee, 80, a lifetime resident of Cumberland, died Wednesday, June 25, 1997, at home peacefully, surrounded by her family and the plants and flowers which she loved. She joined her loving husband, James Carlton McGee Jr., who died in 1992.
Born June 6, 1917, in Cumberland, she was the daughter of the late Lawrence Edward and Emilie Susanna (Lauterbach) Smith. In addition to her husband and parents, she also was preceded in death by three brothers, Carl Smith, John Edward Smith and Robert E. Smith; and one sister, Martha Smith Albright.

Mrs. McGee was retired from the Atlantic and Pacific Tea Company. She was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church.

Mrs. McGee was an avid Duck Pin bowler, winning many trophies over a period of approximately 20 years. She also was a member of the Ladies Auxiliary of Letter Carriers of America. She was an experienced gardener, with many varieties of colorful flowers and plants for all her neighbors to enjoy.

Surviving are one son, Terrence Michael McGee, Cumberland; one daughter, Sandra Karen (McGee) Hudson, at home; a stepdaughter, Patricia (McGee) Sell, Cumberland; one sister, Louise A. Dela Grange, Cumberland; seven grandchildren, Michael "Buddy" Taylor, Debra (Taylor) Crawford, Kathlyn Taylor, Kimberli McGee, Cory McGee, Krista A.M. Hudson, and Kaitlin Nicole Louise Hudson; five stepgrandchildren, Josezette Hudson, Ellen (Sell) Torrington, Gregory Sell, Christopher Sell, and Ginniann (Sell) Huffman; one great-granddaughter, Siearra Leigh Jones; and six great-stepgrandchildren, Carson Torrington, Moria Torrington, Patrick Sell, Logan Sell, Caroline Sell, and Cameron Sell.

Friends will be received at the George-Upchurch Funeral Home, 202 Greene St., Cumberland, on Friday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m.

Services will be held at the funeral home on Saturday at 11 a.m. with the Rev. Larry Goetz officiating.

Interment will be in Sunset Memorial Park.

Serving as pallbearers will be Charles Smith, Lonnie Jackson, Mike Schade, Buddy Taylor, Cory McGee, and Gary Crawford. Honorary pallbearers will be George Smith and Robert McGee.

Memorial contributions may be made to either the LaVale Lions Club, P.O. Box 3235, LaVale MD 21504-3235 or to the Memorial Hospital Hospice Unit, 600 Memorial Avenue, Cumberland, MD 21502.

MICHAEL MCGLINCHEY
SALISBURY - Michael McGlinchey, 52, died March 24, 1997, peacefully at home of Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis, or Lou Gehrig's Disease.
Born Dec. 28, 1944, in Richland, Wash., he was the son of the late Joseph and Emily McGlinchey.

Mr. McGlinchey made his home in Salisbury with his wife of 29 years, Marylane McGlinchey. He graduated from the University of Delaware, and received his master's degree there in 1972. He was a teacher and coach at Salisbury State University from 1972 to 1986; football coach at Central Connecticut State University from 1987 to 1992; and coach at Frostburg State University from 1992 until his retirement in 1996. He was inducted in the Salisbury State University Athletic Hall of Fame in 1991; inducted into Frostburg State University Athletic Hall of Fame in 1996; and inducted into the NCAA Division 3 Wrestling Hall of Fame in March, 1997.

Surviving in addition to his wife are two sons, Patrick Lane McGlinchey, Salisbury, and Michael Stevenson McGlinchey, Towson; a brother, Joseph J. McGlinchey, Huntington Beach, Calif.; a sister, Eileen Huey, Virginia Beach, Va.; and nine nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be held at the Salisbury State University in the Wicomico Room of the Guerrieri University Center, Salisbury, on Friday, March 28, 1997, at 2 p.m. Friends may call there from 1:30 to 2 p.m.

Burial arrangements will be announced at a later date.

The Holloway Funeral Home, Salisbury, is in charge of the arrangements.
