JOHN J. MONAHAN, JR.
CUMBERLAND - John Joseph Monahan, Jr., 48, of Bel Air, Cumberland, died Thursday, Oct. 30, 1997, at his residence.
Born Aug. 27, 1949, in Washington, D.C., he was the son of the late John Joseph Monahan, Sr., and Irene (Kiraly) Monahan.
Mr. Monahan was a journeyman Sheet Metal Worker Local #100 for 25 years. He was a U.S. Army veteran, and he spent his leisure time helping others.
Surviving are his wife, Sharon Louise (Watson) Monahan; two sons, Adam J. McCoy, Fort Bragg, N.C., and Justin D. McCoy, at home; two brothers, Patrick F. Monahan, Columbia, and Michael A. Monahan, Cumberland; two sisters, Diane M. Fairgrieve, Leesburg, Va., and Pamela R. Hardinger, Ridgeley, W.Va.; one niece and six nephews.
At Mr. Monahan's request, he will be cremated. Friends will be received at Scarpelli Funeral Home, Cresaptown, Friday from 7 to 9 p.m.
A memorial service will be conducted at The Church Triumphant, Short Gap, W.Va., Saturday at 11 a.m. with the Pastor David Lease officiating.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests contributions be made to Home Hospice, Memorial Hospital, 600 Memorial Avenue, Cumberland, MD 21502.
BEULAH H. MONTESANT
FROSTBURG - Beulah Hafer Montesant, 93, of 29 Frost Avenue, Frostburg, died Sunday, Nov. 30, 1997, at Spring Valley, N.Y.
Born Dec. 26, 1903, in Cumberland, she was the daughter of the late Jacob and Annie (Trescher) Hafer, founders of Hafer Furniture, Inc., and the Hafer Funeral Homes which have served the Allegany County area for more than 75 years.
She also was preceded in death by her husband, John Emile Monte Santo; a sister, Pearl Hafer Mattingly and her husband, Frank Ambrose Mattingly; a brother, John Jacob Hafer Sr. and his wife, Leah Durst Hafer. She was the last surviving member of her immediate family.
Ms. Montesant graduated from Beall High School in 1921, where she played on the women's championship basketball team. She continued her education at Hood College, the Maryland College for Women, and the Drexel Institute of Technology, where she received her college degree. She was a life member of the Nu Nu Chapter of the Alpha Sigma Alpha Educational Sorority.
In the early 1940's, she became a director of Hafer Furniture, Inc., and the Hafer Funeral Home in Frostburg, where she remained until her retirement in the late 1970's.
Active in community affairs, Ms. Montesant was a charter member of the Frostburg Soroptimist Club, the Frostburg Museum Association, a charter member of the Maplehurst Country Club, where she sponsored an annual Beulah Hafer Montesant Golf Trophy, and a member of the Frostburg Merchants and Business Association. She was also active in the Frostburg Community Hospital Auxiliary. She was a member of the Salem United Church of Christ, a long time member of the Council of the Alleganies, and of the Church Women United.
Ms. Montesant's generosity to and interest in area organizations is well-known. Her philanthropic endeavors included support for the Frostburg Area Ambulance Service, the Frostburg Community Hospital, and the Frostburg Community Theatre. She contributed to the Frostburg State University Foundation and the Frostburg Public Library.
During World War II, she and her sister, Pearl Mattingly, taught a series of classes in first aid. They were accredited and honored by the Borden Mines of Maryland. In the 1980's, she established the Beulah Hafer Montesant Scholarship Fund, which provides scholarships for graduating seniors at Beall High School. She also contributed to the West Virginia School for the Deaf, Romney.
Ms. Montesant is survived by a daughter, Nancy Ann Monte Santo, Spring Valley, N.Y.; two grandchildren, Kirk Burnett Van Fossen, Seattle, Wash., and Leigh Hafer Van Fossen, Charlotte, N.C.; two great-grandsons; and a number of nieces and nephews.
Friends will be received at the Hafer Frost Mansion Funeral Home, Frostburg, on Monday, Dec. 8, 1997, from 7 to 9 p.m. and on Tuesday, Dec. 9, 1997, from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m.
Funeral services will be held at the Salem United Church of Christ, Broadway, Frostburg, on Wednesday, Dec. 10, 1997, at 10:30 a.m. with the Rev. Lawrence A. Neumark officiating.
Interment will be in Frostburg Memorial Park after which friends and relatives will be received at 29 Frost Avenue, Frostburg.
Pallbearers will be Ms. Montesant's grandnieces, grandnephews, and their spouses.

THOMAS L. MONTGOMERY, SR.
CRESAPTOWN - Thomas L. Montgomery Sr., 83, of Frostburg Village Nursing Home, formerly of Cresaptown, died Friday, May 16, 1997, at Sacred Heart Hospital.
Born July 21, 1913 in Beryl, W.Va., he was the son of the late Thomas M. Montgomery and Beulah (Powell) Montgomery. He also was preceded in death by two brothers and one sister.
Mr. Montgomery was a retired conductor for the Western Maryland Railroad with 45 years of service. He served in the U.S. Navy for four years. He was a life member of Council 5450 of the Knights of Columbus, Cresaptown. He was a member of the American Legion Victory Post No. 155, Westernport. He was a life member of the Cresaptown Fire Co. No. 9, and a member of the Brotherhood of Railroad Trainmen. He was a member of St. Ambrose Catholic Church, Cresaptown.
Surviving are his wife of 63 years, Rose Ann (Stowell) Montgomery; one son, Thomas L. Montgomery Jr. and wife Carole, Eckhart; one daughter, Dawn Mastrodonato and husband Ron, Mentor, Ohio; one sister, Katherine Grandstaff, Mansfield, Ohio; three grandchildren, Bill Montgomery and wife Angie, Cumberland, John ``J.C." Montgomery and wife Janet, Fort Pierce, Fla., and Crystal Montgomery and fiance Larry Bittinger, Eckhart; nine great-grandchildren, T.J. and Ruth Ann Montgomery, Yuma, Ariz., Corey ``Taylor" and Zayne Montgomery, Cumberland, Samantha Daugherty, Martinsburg, Pa., Kelsie Bittinger, Eckhart, Michael Mastrodonato and wife Susan, Mentor, Ohio, and Elisa and Kristine Mastrodonato, Mentor, Ohio; two step-great-grandchildren, Alice Lee and Jannette Rodgers, Fort Pierce, Fla., and three step-great-great-grandchildren, Faith and Xavier Rodgers, and Mercedes Lee, all of Fort Pierce, Fla.; numerous nieces and nephews; and a special friend, Ruth Brennan of Mentor, Ohio.
Friends will be received at the Fredlock Funeral Home, Piedmont, W.Va. on Sunday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at St. Peter's Catholic Church, Westernport, on Monday at 11 a.m. with Father Jim Hannon as celebrant.
Interment will be in St. Peter's cemetery, Westernport.
Military honors will be accorded by members of American Legion Victory Post No. 155, Westernport.
RUIE PARKS
FREDERICK - Ruie (Reininger) Parks, 90, of Frederick, died Tuesday, July 29, 1997.
She was a beloved mother of Hannah M. Roberts; loving grandmother of Janet E. Parks, Ellen M. Smythe, Rean J. Miller and Carol J. Marshall; great-grandmother of 12, great-great-grandmother of 16; and beloved sister of five.
Mrs. Parks retired from the N.I.H., Bethesda, in 1974, as a environmental services supervisor.
Friends will be received at the Stauffer Funeral Home, 1621 Opossumtown Pike, Frederick, on Wednesday from 1 to 3 and 5 to 7 p.m.
Graveside services will be in the Fishertown cemetery, Fishertown, Pa., on Thursday at 11 a.m.
