MARSHALL MOATS JR.
HAGERSTOWN - Marshall Moats Jr., 72, of 1215 Frederick St., Hagerstown, died Sunday, June 8, 1997, at his home.
Born Jan. 28, 1925, in Hutton, he was the son of the late Marshall and Eva Cora (Pfiefer) Moats. He also was preceded in death by three brothers, Earl, Homer, and Carl Moats.
Mr. Moats was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II, helping the 27th Infantry Division to secure Okinawa and Saipan. He was recalled from the reserves to serve in the Korean War. While in the service, he received the Good Conduct Medal, Asiatic Pacific Theater Ribbon, Army Occupation Medal, and (Japan) World War II Victory Medal.
He was a member of the Boonsboro Bible Church, and Maryland Classified Employees. He retired from the state of Maryland's Department of Natural Resources. He started his career in the park service in 1947 as a seasonal employee with the Herrington Manor State Park, Oakland. In 1952, he became superintendent of the Gambrill State Park, Frederick, and then was superintendent of the Washington Monument State Park for 25 years until his retirement in 1987.
Surviving are his wife of 48 years, Madeline (Nethken) Moats; one daughter, Sharon L. Morgan, Sharpsburg; four sons, Richard K. Moats, Annandale, Va., Kenneth R. Moats, Boonsboro, Michael D. Moats, Clear Spring, Timothy B. Moats, Hagerstown; one sister, Mary C. Gerrone, Avon Lake, Ohio; one brother, George W. Moats, Tequesta, Fla.; and seven grandchildren.
Friends will be received at the Bast Funeral Home, 7606 Old National Pike, Boonsboro, on Tuesday from 7 to 9 p.m.
Funeral services will be held in the funeral home chapel on Wednesday, June 11, 1997, at 2 p.m. with the Rev. Joseph Downs officiating.
Burial will be in the Boonsboro cemetery, Boonsboro.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be directed to the Boonsboro Bible Church, 6731 Old National Pike, Boonsboro, MD 21713.
HELEN A. MOCK
CUMBERLAND - Helen A. Mock, R.F.D. 3, Bedford, Pa., died Wednesday, Aug. 20, 1997, at Memorial Hospital, Cumberland.
Born in New Hyde, N.Y., she was the daughter of the late John Fabianski and Bronislasva (Palinska) Fabianski.
She is survived by her husband, Melvin T. Mock; step-son, David D. Mock, R.F.D. 3, Bedford; step-daughter Patricia A. Stump and husband George, Fort Ashby, W.Va.
At Mrs. Mock's request, she was cremated at the Cumberland Crematory, 404 Decatur St., Cumberland.
Arrangements were handled by the Merritt-Adams Funeral Home.
ERNEST L. POLAND SR.
BARTON - Ernest Lee Poland Sr., 75, of Barton, died Monday, April 28, 1997, at his residence.
Born Oct. 17, 1921, in Lonaconing, he was the son of the late Ernest Poland and Ella (Lee) Hill, of Allegany County Nursing Home, Cumberland. He also was preceded in death by his wife, Lillian D. ``Wid" (Lashbaugh) Poland, in 1996.
Mr. Poland was the water commissioner for the town of Barton, and formerly served as mayor. He retired from Westvaco Corp., out of the instrument shop. He was a U.S. Army Air Corps veteran of the Korean conflict. He was a life member of the Barton Hose Co. 1, and a life member and past commander of Barton American Legion 189; a member of Barton Allegany Lodge 157 AF&AM; Ali Ghan Shrine Temple, Cumberland; and Alvin C. Neat VFW 5280, Lonaconing. He was past Mountain District American Legion Commander, and served on the Department Executive Committee for the State of Maryland. He was a member of the Executive Committee's Children's Youth Commission, where he was instrumental in raising funds for the Barton Elementary School Playground. He also spearheaded fund raising for the Salem Childrens Trust of Avilton.
Surviving in addition to his mother are one son, Ernest L. Poland Jr., Barton; two daughters, Linda McKone Beach, Thurmont, and Patricia McConnell, Seoul, Korea; one brother, Karl Poland, Freemont, Calif.; one sister, Marguerite Smith, Cumberland; eight grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.
At Mr. Poland's request, he was cremated.
Memorial services will be held at the Barton Presbyterian Church on Friday, May 2, 1997, at 11 a.m. with the Rev. Vernon Gauthier officiating.
Interment will be in Maryland Veterans cemetery at Rocky Gap, where full military honors will be accorded.
Friends will be received after the graveside service at the Barton American Legion Post Home from 2 to 4 p.m.
Memorials may be directed to the Barton Presbyterian Church.

DAVID E. MOFFATT
LONACONING - David Earl Moffatt, 69, of State Street, Lonaconing, died Wednesday, July 9, 1997, at his home.
Born Sept. 9, 1927, at Detmold, he was the son of the late David Moffatt, on Jan. 14, 1964, and Alice Christine (McCormick) Moffatt, on April 25, 1995. He was preceded in death by one brother, Richard Olin Moffatt, on Jan. 1, 1984.
Mr. Moffatt was a coal miner for Georges Creek Coal Co., Lonaconing, later in life. He was self-employed as a deepmine coal miner.
Surviving are one sister, Eunice E. Junkins, Frostburg; one niece, Debbie Gravilla and husband Michael; two nephews, Steven L. Junkins and Ricky L. Moffatt and wife Linda; two great-nieces, Melissa Gravilla and Carrie Gravilla; and two great-nephews, Richard Moffatt and Steven L. Junkins II.
Friends will be received at the Eichhorn-McKenzie Funeral Home, Lonaconing, on Friday from noon to 1 p.m.
Services will be at the funeral home on Friday at 1 p.m. with the Rev. Richard Mortimore officiating.
Interment will be in the Frostburg Memorial Park.

RAYMOND F. MUMMERT
CUMBERLAND - Raymond F. Mummert, 70, of Cumberland, went to be with the Lord, Monday, May 5, 1997, at Memorial Hospital.
Born Nov. 14, 1926, in Cumberland, he was the son of the late Calvin D. and Martha S. (Tyson) Mummert. He also was preceded in death by his wife, Elizabeth S. Mummert; two sisters, Mary A. Miller and Willa E. Swanger; and one brother, Vernon C. Mummert.
Mr. Mummert was a retired clerk for CSX Railroad, Cumberland. He was a member of St. Mary's Catholic Church, and the prayer group of the church. He was a U.S. Navy veteran of World War II.
Surviving are five daughters, Mary Mossburg and husband Kenneth, Cumberland, Rosalie Hilliker and husband George, Baltimore, Catherine Hardy and husband Lee, Jacksonville, Fla., Patricia Penrod and husband Stephen, Cumberland, Christina Francis and husband Thomas, Stokesdale, N.C.; one brother, Fay C. Mummert, Corriganville; one sister, Gladys A. Swanger, Cumberland; 10 grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.
Friends will be received at the Scarpelli Funeral Home, 108 Virginia Ave., Thursday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m.
A Christian Wake service will be conducted at the funeral home Thursday at 8:30 p.m.
Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at St. Mary's Catholic Church Friday at 10 a.m. with Father Milton A. Hipsley as celebrant.
Interment will be in St. Mary's cemetery, Cumberland.
Graveside military honors will be accorded by the Combined Veterans Honor Guard.
EDWARD ``EDDIE" W. PARKER, SR.
ROANOKE, Va. - Edward ``Eddie" Wayne Parker Sr., 61, of Roanoke, formerly of Paw Paw, W.Va., died Thursday, May 22, 1997, at the Roanoke Memorial Hospital.
Born June 1, 1935, at Paw Paw, he was the son of the late Hilda Parker.
Mr. Parker was general superintendent of the Roanoke Civic Center.
Surviving are one son, Edward W. Parker Jr. and wife Sheila, Manassas; three daughters, Cheryl Pearson and husband Joel, Manassas, Tracey Minnich and husband Wesley, Apex, N.C., and Nichole Parker, Roanoke; one sister Frances Arnica, Paw Paw; three grandchildren, Kayci Parker, Jessie Parker, Jacob Pearson; one unborn grandson, Parker Wesley Minnich; and his long time friend and former wife, Mary (Foutz) Parker, Roanoke.
Friends will be received at the Miller Funeral Home, Winchester and Lee Streets, Paw Paw, on Sunday from noon to 9 p.m.
Funeral services will be at the Paw Paw United Methodist Church on Monday at 11 a.m. with the Rev. Nancy Ward officiating.
Interment will be in the Woodrow cemetery, Paw Paw.
The body will be taken to the church Monday at 10 a.m.
