DR. ALVIN P. FRIEND
OAKLAND - Alvin P. Friend, DDS, 69, of Oakland, died Monday, March 3, 1997, at Garrett County Memorial Hospital, Oakland.
Born June 20, 1927, in Swanton, he was a son of the late Lenuel F. Friend, and Delores (Sharpless) Friend.
Dr. Friend was a U.S. Navy veteran of World War II. He graduated from Potomac State College in 1948, and the Baltimore College of Dental Surgery, University of Maryland, in 1952. He did an internship at the Oral Surgery Department of Spring Grove Hospital, and did residencies in oral surgery and anesthesiology at the University of Louisville, Louisville, Ky. Throughout his career, Dr. Friend presented many programs and clinics to numerous dental societies and associations. He also presented educational programs to civic organizations, as well as high school and college groups. He served as president of the medical staff of Garrett County Memorial Hospital, and as president of the Allegany-Garrett County Dental Society. He was past chairman of hospital dental services for the Maryland Dental State association, and past chairman of the hospital dental service committee of the Allegany-Garrett County Dental Society. He once won the honor of being Garrett County's Most Beautiful Person.
He was a member of the Maryland State Dental Association; the Allegany-Garrett County Dental Society; the American Dental Association; the American Dental Society of Anesthesiology; the Christian-Medical Society; Missionary Dentists, Inc.; and the International College of Dentistry. He was a member of the Pine Grove Church of the Brethren, where he served as Sunday school superintendent, taught Sunday school, and sang in the church choir. He was a member of the Christian Businessmen's Group. He did short-term missionary service to Haiti, completing twelve missions starting in 1978. He was a lay church leader, and a counselor and speaker at youth conferences. He conducted Christian seminars and Bible study groups, and was a past president of the Union Rescue Mission in Cumberland.
Surviving are his wife, Ann (Phillippi) Friend; two sons, Jay Friend and fiance Sol Burnett, Sarasota, Fla., and Michael Phillippi and wife Dawn, McHenry; two daughters, Karen Wall and husband Ken, Sarasota, Fla., and Brenda Harvey and husband Dennis, Oakland; one brother, Ronald Friend and wife Beth, Oakland; one sister, Luella Baker and husband James, Swanton; eight grandchildren, Shawn, Shannon, Laura Ann, Adam, Courtney, Kimberly, Cayse, and Kristi; and one great-grandchild, Avery Nicole.
Friends will be received at the Durst Funeral Home, Oakland, Wednesday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m.
Services will be conducted at the Pine Grove Church of the Brethren Thursday at 11 a.m. with the Rev. Owen Preston and the Rev. Jack Beck officiating.
Interment will be in Garrett County Memorial Gardens.
Friends may call at the church one half hour before services.
The family requests that memorials take the form of contributions to the Pine Grove Church of the Brethren, or Hospice of Garrett County.
DALE D. DeSHONG
BARTON - Dale David DeShong, 71, of South Railroad Street, Barton, died Tuesday, Aug. 19, 1997, at his residence.
Born March 20, 1926, in Cross, W.Va., he was the son of the late Harry H. and Ethel (Sutton) DeShong. He also was preceded in death by his wife, Esther M. (Hutcheson) DeShong; one brother, Harry DeShong, Jr.; and two sisters, Juanita Duckworth and Mildred Derham.
He is survived by two brothers, Melvin DeShong of Westernport and Dwight DeShong, Sr., of Mill Run; one sister, Twita Ross, Barton; and a special friend Joann Hyde of McCoole.
Mr. DeShong was a retired lubricator from the Westvaco Corporation, Luke. He had served in the U.S. Navy during World War II.
At Mr. DeShong's request he was cremated, and there will be no visitation or service.
Interment will be in the Mountain View cemetery, Moscow Mills.
Boal Funeral Home, Barton, will be in charge of arrangements.
THOMAS E. JAMES JR.
MOUNT AIRY - Thomas Edward James Jr., 36, of Mount Airy, went to be with the Lord on Wednesday, March 19, 1997.
He was the husband of Mrs. Kiki D. Velte James of six years. Tommy lived his life to the fullest and brightened the lives of everyone he met.
Born March 3, 1961, in Cumberland, he was a son of Thomas Edward, Sr., and Norma Louise Park James.
Mr. James was employed as a computer programmer/analyst for Ameridata Technology Inc., Gaithersburg. He was a graduate of Allegany High School, Class of 1979. He also was a graduate of Allegany Community College and had attended Frostburg State University. He was an avid volleyball player and an active member of the United States Volleyball Association. He was the owner of SunZone Volleyball Activewear Inc. Mr. James and his wife Kiki were very active in the Brain Tumor Support Group of George Washington University Hospital, Washington, D.C.
Surviving in addition to his wife and parents are two beautiful children, Stephanie Louise James and Thomas Edward James III; two brothers, Kenneth Troy James and fiancee Tina Minick, Fort Ashby, W.Va., and Jeffrey Scott James and wife Melissa, Ridgeley, W.Va.; two nephews, Joshua Scott James and Nathaniel Scott James, Ridgeley; one niece, Ashley Rae James, Ridgeley; maternal grandmother, Mildred Park, Cumberland; close cousins, Todd Mower, Mount Airy, and Kelly Sloan, Oracle, Ariz.; and numerous aunts, uncles and cousins.
The family will receive friends at the Stauffer Funeral Home, 8 E. Ridgeville Blvd., Mount Airy, on Saturday, March 22, 1997, from 3 to 6 p.m.
A second visitation will be held at the Merritt-Adams Funeral Home, 404 Decatur St., Cumberland, on Sunday, March 23, from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m.
Come celebrate his life on Monday, March 24, 1997, at 1 p.m. at Central Assembly of God, 2020 Bedford St., Cumberland, with the Rev. Michael S. Nau Sr. officiating.
Interment will follow in Sunset Memorial Park, Cumberland.
Pallbearers will be Don Abramson, Chuck Bowman, Lou Huff, Ron Miezis, Todd Mower and Kevin Young. Honorary pallbearers will be Lionel Chaiken and Myrle Burch.

WALTER R. HOUSE
CUMBERLAND - Walter R. House, 68, of Cumberland, died Thursday, Nov. 6, 1997, at Memorial Hospital.
Born Oct. 12, 1929, in Cumberland, he was the son of Alice Margaret (Hare) House, Cumberland, and the late Robert E. House. He also was preceded in death by one brother, James House; and one sister, Margaret Roller.
Mr. House was a retired manager of the Wolfe Furniture Store, Cumberland. He was a U.S. Army veteran of the Korean conflict. He was a member of the Trinity Lutheran Church, Cumberland.
In addition to his mother, surviving are his wife, Delores (Brant) House; one son, Randolph Randy House and wife Dawn Marie, Cumberland; one daughter, Christine Ann House, at home; and three brothers, Willard House and wife Mary, Lester House, all of Cumberland, and Thomas House and wife Edith, Fredericksburg, Va.
Friends will be received at the Scarpelli Funeral Home, 108 Virginia Ave., Cumberland, on Friday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m.
Services will be conducted at the funeral home on Saturday at 11 a.m. with the Rev. Walter Turner officiating.
Interment will be in Sunset Memorial Park.
Graveside military honors will be accorded by the Combined Veterans Honor Guard.
DOROTHY L. BRADSHAW
CRESAPTOWN - Dorothy Louise Bradshaw, 63, formerly of Cresaptown, then a resident of Lions Manor Nursing Home, died Sunday, Aug. 24, 1997, at Sacred Heart Hospital.
Born Jan. 6, 1934, in Prince Georges County, she was the daughter of the late George Collins.
Surviving are a daughter Anita Livengood, Grantsville; and two grandchildren.
At Ms. Bradshaw's request, her body will be cremated.
Arrangements are under the direction of the Hafer Funeral Home, 1302 National Highway, LaVale.
JOHNIE M. CECIL
EASTPOINTE, Mich. - Johnie M. Cecil, 62, of Eastpoint, died Oct. 11, 1997, in Henry Ford Hospital.
He was born July 13, 1935, in Cresaptown, and was the son of the late John R. and Hazel M. Cecil of Cresaptown.
Mr. Cecil was retired from the U.S. Air Force. He was a member and past commander of East Detroit V.F.W. 6782 and a member of LAmericna Legion in Oscala, Mich.
He is survived by his wife, Billie Jean; a son, Johnie, and wife Donna; three daughters, Debora, Michelle, and Christina; and four grandchildrn, all of Michigan; one brother, Vance Edward Cecil, and wife Shirley, Cumberland; and four nephews, Buck, Steve, Todd, and Gary Cecil.
Interment was in Clinton Grove cemetery, Clinton Township, Mich.
ANNA P. BRADY
CUMBERLAND - Anna Pearl Brady, 96, of Cumberland, died Wednesday, May 7, 1997, at Memorial Hospital, Cumberland.
Born July 19, 1900, in Slanesville, W.Va., she was the daughter of the late George Washington and Margaret (Brelsford) Ginevan. She also was preceded in death by her husband, Charles L. Brady; one brother, Oliver Ginevan; and one sister, Mae Klein.
Mrs. Brady was a homemaker. She was Baptist by faith.
Surviving are two daughters, Margaret Susan Horning, and Geraldine Virginia Ward and husband Philip, all of Cumberland; one grandson, Rodney Horning and wife Barbara, Cumberland; two great-grandchildren, Roan and Nolana Horning; and several nieces and nephews.
Friends will be received at the Scarpelli Funeral Home, 108 Virginia Ave., Cumberland, on Saturday from 1 to 2 p.m.
Services will be conducted at the funeral home on Saturday at 2 p.m. with the Rev. Fred Parker officiating.
