MARY R. UPHOLD
FRIENDSVILLE - Mary Rhubena Uphold, 94, of 5455 White Rock Road, Friendsville, died Tuesday, Oct. 13, 1998, at Garrett County Memorial Hospital, Oakland.
Born Jan. 18, 1904, in Friendsville, she was a daughter of the late Milton O. and Grace D. (Sisler) Friend. She was preceded in death by her husband, Clarence A. Uphold, Oct. 31, 1960; and a daughter, Grace Uphold, Dec. 26, 1991.

She was a member of Laurel Run Church of God and the Women's Willing Workers.

Survivors include a son, Eugene Uphold, Friendsville; four daughters, Hazel Uphold, Granville, W.Va., June Landon, Janet Sisler and Judith Frazee, all of Friendsville; a brother, Ray VanSickle, Friendsville; four sisters, Goldie Chidester, Bruceton Mills, W.Va., Pauline Frazee, Friendsville, Mary Teets, McHenry, Ruth Williams, Springfield, Pa.; 21 grandchildren; 46 great-grandchildren; and 11 great-great-grandchildren.

Friends will be received at the Newman Funeral Homes, P.A., Friendsville, on Wednesday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m.

Services will be conducted on Thursday at 1 p.m. at Laurel Run Church of God with Pastor Cathy Harman officiating. Friends may call at the church one hour prior to services.

Interment will be in Blooming Rose cemetery.

Expressions of sympathy may be directed to Laurel Run Church of God.

EVELYN M. UPLINGER
MARINA-DEL-REY, Calif. - Evelyn Marie Uplinger, 86, formerly of Valley Road, Cumberland, and residing at 517 Riverside Drive, Baltimore, died Friday, Oct. 16, 1998, at Daniel Freeman Marina Hospital in Marina-Del-Rey.
Born Dec. 15, 1911, in Cumberland, she was the daughter of the late Michael Long and the late Nellie (Brotemarkle) Long. She was also preceded in death by her husband, the late Alban F. Uplinger, on Oct. 18, 1972.

Surviving are her daughter, with whom she resided for the past 26 years, Miss Elizabeth Uplinger, Baltimore, Md.; a sister, Eva Shanklin; and several nieces and nephews.

Friends will be received at the Merritt-Adams Funeral Home, P.A., 404 Decatur St., Cumberland, on Wednesday from 2 to 4 p.m. and from 7 to 9 p.m.

Services will be conducted on Thursday at 1 p.m. at the Merritt-Adams Funeral Home, P.A., with the D.A.V. Chaplain John McFarland officiating.

Interment will be in Sunset Memorial Park.

ELMER H. UPOLE SR.
MOUNTAIN LAKE PARK - Elmer Harland Upole Sr., 86, of 500 H St., Mountain Lake Park, died Thursday, Jan. 15, 1998, at the Cuppett Weeks Nursing Home, Oakland.
Born May 10, 1911, in Jennings, he was a son of the late Joseph Upole and Florence (Buttler) Upole.

Mr. Upole was a forest ranger for the Maryland Forestry Department for more than 30 years. He was a member of the Pleasant View Baptist Church; member of Camp 11 Woodmen of the World; a former councilman and served three terms as Mayor of Mountain Lake Park; and a former member of the Garrett County Sanitary Commission and the Boy Scouts Council.

Surviving are his wife of 67 years, Celesta (Cook) Upole; one daughter, Erma M. Kemphfer, Dover, Ohio; one son, Elmer H. Upole Jr., Grantsville; six grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren.

Friends may call at the Durst Funeral Home, Oakland, on Friday from 3 to 5 and 7 to 9 p.m.

Services will be conducted at the funeral home on Saturday at 1 p.m. with the Rev. James F. Remley officiating.

Interment will be in the Pleasant Valley cemetery.

The family requests that memorials take the form of contributions to the Garrett County Memorial Hospital Foundation.

AGNES D. URBAS
MIDLAND - Agnes D. Urbas, 69, of Midland, died Saturday, July 11, 1998, at her home.
Born Sept. 8, 1928, in Midland, she was the daughter of the late John and Bridget (Stakem) Devlin. She also was preceded in death by one sister, Mary McGraw; and two brothers, John and Harry Devlin.

Mrs. Urbas was a retired teachers aide at St. John Neumann School and Georges Creek Elementary School. She was a member of St. Joseph's Catholic Church and the Sodality.

Surviving are her husband, William Urbas; one daughter, Agnes Llewellyn and husband Terry, Hagerstown; one brother, Daniel Devlin, Cresaptown; two sisters, Anne Eberly, Midland, and Kay Rivera, West Palm Beach, Fla.; five sisters-in-law, Antoinette Kelly, Lonaconing, Helen Hardesty, Springs, Pa., Margaret Arnold, Vale Summit, Dorothy Warnick, New Germany, and Elizabeth McKinley, Hagerstown; one brother-in-law, John Urbas, Sand Patch, Pa.; and a close friend, Jane Sloan, Clearville, Pa.

Friends will be received at the Sowers Funeral Home, P.A., 60 W. Main St., Frostburg, on Monday from 7 to 9 p.m. and Tuesday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. The Rosary will be recited Tuesday at 7:30 p.m.

Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at St. Joseph's Catholic Church, Midland, on Wednesday at 9:30 a.m. with the Rev. James Hannon as celebrant.

Entombment will be in the Rest Lawn Mausoleum. Pallbearers will be John Urbas, Eugene Michaels, John McGowan, Bill Devlin, Harry Devlin and James Eberly.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Memorial Hospital Hospice.

ELIZABETH L. VALENTINE
CUMBERLAND - Elizabeth L. Valentine, 92, of Cumberland, died Thursday, Jan. 15, 1998, at Memorial Hospital.
Born June 10, 1905, in Cumberland, she was the daughter of the late John W. and Mary (Thompson) Glantzer. She also was preceded in death by her husband, R. Spear Valentine, in July 1979; a son, Raymond M. Kelly; one sister, Emma Bierman; and one brother, William Glantzer.

Mrs. Valentine was a homemaker. She was a member of St. John's Lutheran Church, and the Dames of Malta.

Surviving are one daughter, Mary Jo Brinkman and husband William, Jacksonville, Fla.; two sisters, Helen Sandsbury, Cumberland, and Myrtle Carney, New Castle, Del.; five grandchildren, Randall J. Kelly, John D. Kelly and Karlyn Buser, all of Cumberland, Joy Wood, Yuma, Ariz., and Bryan Brinkman, Jacksonville, Fla,; nine great-grandchildren; and a great-great-grandchild.

Friends will be received at the Scarpelli Funeral Home, P.A., 108 Virginia Ave., Cumberland, on Saturday from 7 to 9 p.m. and Sunday from 3 to 5 and 7 to 9 p.m.

Services will be conducted at the funeral home on Monday at 1 p.m. with Pastor Mark C. Dill officiating.

Burial will be in the Hillcrest Memorial Park.

ELIZABETH L. KELLY VALENTINE
CUMBERLAND - Friends will be received for Elizabeth L. Kelly Valentine at the Scarpelli Funeral Home, P.A., 108 Virginia Ave., Cumberland, on Saturday from 7 to 9 p.m. and Sunday from 3 to 5 and 7 to 9 p.m.
Services will be conducted at the funeral home on Monday at 1 p.m. with Pastor Mark C. Dill officiating.

Interment will be in the Hillcrest Memorial Park.

JOSEPHINE M. VALENZANO
ECKHART - Josephine M. Valenzano, 83, of the Frostburg Village Nursing Care Center, formerly of 17219 Porter Road, Eckhart, died Monday, Nov. 2, 1998, at the nursing home.
Born Oct. 24, 1915, in Eckhart, she was the daughter of the late John and Maria (Sassone) Valenzano. She also was preceded in death by one brother, Arthur Valenzano, in 1997; and a sister, Matilda Gaudio, in 1984.

Miss Valenzano was retired from the Celanese Fibers Corp. She was a member of St. Michael's Catholic Church, Frostburg, and the Ladies Sodality.

Surviving are a brother, Louis J. Valenzano, and a sister, Ernestine A. Valenzano, both of Eckhart; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Family and friends will be received at the Durst Funeral Home, 57 Frost Ave., Frostburg, on Wednesday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Prayers for the departed will be recited at the funeral home Wednesday at 8 p.m.

Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at St. Michael's Catholic Church on Thursday at 10 a.m. with Monsignor Arthur Valenzano as celebrant.

Interment will be in the St. Michael's Parish cemetery.

HAZEL ELIZABETH ANN (HARMAN) VANMETER
CUMBERLAND - Hazel Elizabeth Ann (Harman) VanMeter, 61, of Cumberland, died Tuesday, May 12, 1998, at Memorial Hospital.
Born Nov. 5, 1936, in Oldtown, she was the daughter of the late Doc Hesper and Mary Violia (Piper) Harman. She also was preceded in death by five brothers, Hesper, Gerald, Edward, Donald and Grover Harman; two sisters, Hilda Crowfis and Margaret Boch.

Mrs. VanMeter was a homemaker. She was a member of Memorial Heights Baptist Church.

Surviving are her husband, Tracy Eugene VanMeter Sr.; two sons, Tracy E. VanMeter Jr., and wife, Thelma, Troy D. VanMeter, and wife, Timberly, all of Cumberland; one brother, Cliff Harman, Cumberland; one sister, Mable Crowfis, Cumberland; four grandchildren, Joseph Allen VanMeter, and wife, Sherry, Jaste A. VanMeter, and wife, Vandy, all of Tennessee, Emily Anne VanMeter and Joshua Michael VanMeter, both of Cumberland.

Friends will be received at Scarpelli Funeral Home, P.A., 108 Virginia Ave., on Wednesday from 7 to 9 p.m. and Thursday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m.

Services will be conducted at the funeral home on Friday at 1 p.m. with Pastor Denny Michael officiating. Interment will be in Restlawn Memorial Gardens, LaVale.
