VERGIE M. SAGER
CUMBERLAND - Vergie M. (Lantz) Sager, 91, of Cumberland, died Friday, March 13, 1998, at Sacred Heart Hospital.
Born June 16, 1906, in Mathias, W.Va., she was the daughter of the late Lorenzo and Sarah (See) Lantz. She was also preceded in death by her husband, Emory Hurl Sager in 1994.
She was Methodist by faith.
Survivors include one daughter, Zetta Scarlett, and husband, Charles, Cumberland; one brother, Earl Lantz, and wife, Edith, Winchester, Va.; one sister, Gladys DeHaven, Mariottsville; two brothers-in-law, Curtis Dove, Capon Bridge, W.Va. and Guy Sager, and wife, Minnie, Mathias; one sister-in-law, Pearlie Fishel, Romney, W.Va.; one granddaughter, Teresa Adams, and husband, Kelly, Cumberland; two great-grandchildren, Noel and Tammy Adams, Cumberland and one great-great-grandson, Tyler Cain Adams and numerous nieces and nephews.
Friends will be received at the Upchurch Funeral Home, P.A., located at the corner of Greene and Smallwood streets, Cumberland, Saturday from 2 to 4 p.m.
Funeral services will be held Sunday at 2 p.m. in Garrett's Chapel, Mathias, with the Rev. Jonathan Hedrick officiating. The body will be taken to the church one hour prior to the service.
Interment will be in Cedar Hill cemetery, Mathias.
MARVIN HAROLD "SAM" SAMPLES
CUMBERLAND - Marvin Harold "Sam" Samples, 69, of 807 Rose Ave., Cumberland, died suddenly on Tuesday, March 24, 1998, at his home.
Born May 21, 1928 in Beckley, W.Va., he was the son of the late Bert Thomas Samples and Willie Rachel (Cloud) Samples.
Mr. Samples was retired from the Pittsburgh Plate Glass Company with 33 years of service. He was a member of the Melvin United Methodist Church and a veteran of the U.S. Marines during World War II. He served in the U.S. Army in Korea.
Surviving is his wife, Alvirda Virginia (Bowen) Samples; one son, Bert Thomas Samples and wife, Ann, Hagerstown; two daughters, Mitzi Morgan and husband, James, Cumberland, Willie Jane Green and husband, Steve, Sharpsburg; three brothers, William Samples, Columbus, Ohio, Frank Samples, Bakersfield, Calif., James Samples, Aberdeen, N.C.; four sisters, Kathleen Gordon, Aberdeen, N.C., Helen Kennedy, Columbus, Ohio, Anne Miller, West Palm Beach, Fla., Jane Hosse, Nashville, Tenn.; and seven grandchildren, Wesley and Wade Samples, Amber and Adam Morgan, Kaitlyn, Megan and Emily Green.
Friends will be received at the Merritt-Adams Funeral Home, P.A., 404 Decatur St., Cumberland, on Thursday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m.
Services will be conducted on Friday at 11 a.m. at the funeral home with the Rev. Richard Leslie officiating.
Interment will be in Sunset Memorial Park.
Military honors will be accorded by the combined veterans honor guard.
PAUL R. SANDERS SR.
LAVALE - Paul Richard Sanders Sr., 85, of LaVale, formerly of Oakland, died Monday, Feb. 23, 1998, at Memorial Hospital, Cumberland.
Born May 27, 1912, in Hutton, he was a son of the late Nelson C. Sanders and Valley (Paulie) Sanders.
Prior to his retirement, Mr. Sanders owned and operated a service station and convenience store in Ellerslie. He was a member of Ohr Lodge 131 AF & AM; Cumberland Consistory Scottish Rite; and Ali Ghan Temple and was the last living charter member of the Provost Guard.
Surviving are his wife, Mary (Reckart) Sanders; two sons, Paul R. "Dick" Sanders, Oakland, and Rodney E. Sanders, Glen Burnie; two brothers, Elwood Sanders and Forrest Sanders, both of Oakland; two sisters, Barbara Sanders, and Bethyl Martin, both of Loudon County, Tenn.; four grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.
Friends may call at the Durst Funeral Home, Oakland, on Tuesday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m.
Services will be conducted at the funeral home on Wednesday at 11 a.m. with the Rev. Mark Hickman officiating.
Interment will be in Garrett County Memorial Gardens.
HELEN M. SANDSBURY
CUMBERLAND - Helen M. Sandsbury, 99, of Springdale Street, Cumberland, died Friday, Oct. 30, 1998, at Memorial Hospital.
Born Aug. 20, 1899, in Cumberland, she was the daughter of the late John W. and Mary (Thompson) Glantzer. She was also preceded in death by her husband, Earl E. "Duke" Sandsbury, in 1942; two sisters, Emma Bierman and Elizabeth Valentine; and one brother, William Glantzer.
Mrs. Sandsbury was a homemaker. She was a member of St. Johns Lutheran Church and a life member of the Cumberland. V.F.W. Ladies Auxiliary.
Surviving are one son, Earl W. Sandsbury, Bedford, Pa.; two daughters, Betty L. Sandsbury and Shirley E. Collins and husband, Merle, all of Cumberland; one sister, Myrtle Carey and husband, Fred, New Castle, Del.; one granddaughter, Kimberly Egelhoff and husband, Lester, Cumberland; and numerous nieces and nephews.
Friends will be received at the Scarpelli Funeral Home, P.A., 108 Virginia Ave., on Sunday from 7 to 9 p.m., and Monday from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m.
Services will be conducted at the funeral home on Tuesday at 11 a.m. with Pastor Mark C. Dill officiating.
Interment will be in Rose Hill cemetery.
Pallbearers will be Randall Kelley, John Kelley, Steve Nixon Sr., Steve Nixon Jr.
DAVID L. SANFORD
FROSTBURG - David L. Sanford, age 65, of 66 W. College Ave., Frostburg, died Monday, Dec. 21, 1998, at his residence.
Born Feb. 5, 1933, in Charleston, W.Va., he was the son of the late Harry E. and Ethel (Gilbert) Sanford. He was also preceded in death by one sister, Sandi Sanford.
Mr. Sanford was retired as Dean of Admissions of Frostburg State University and current director of International Student Services at F.S.U. He was a U.S. Army Veteran of the Korean Conflict. He was a member of the Benevolent and Protective Order of Elks #470, the F.S.U. Bobcat Club, Bass Masters and the Outcasts Fishing Club.
Mr. Sanford was an avid fisherman, tournament fisherman and loyal supporter of all Frostburg State University Athletic Programs.
Surviving are his wife, Mary Elizabeth "Beth" (Seaton) Sanford; two sons, David L. Sanford II, and wife, Roxanne, Frostburg, and Tracy Sanford, and wife, Ellen, Point of Rocks; one daughter, Elizabeth "Liz" Worch and husband, Michael, Mount Airy; two step granddaughters; and two grandsons; one sister, Pattye Landis, Pulaski, Va.; and several nieces and nephews.
In accordance with his wishes, his body was cremated, with no visitation or services, under the direction of the Durst Funeral Home, Frostburg.

MARGARET M. SAVAGE
MCHENRY-Margaret Marie Savage, age 91, of McHenry, died on Thursday, Dec. 3, 1998.
She was born in McHenry Aug. 12, 1907, and was a daughter of the late Joseph F. Sebold and the late Elizabeth (McGettigan) Sebold. She was also preceded in death by her husband, Arthur C. Savage, in 1989.
Surviving are one son, Harold A. Savage and his wife, Agnes, New Castle, Del.; three daughters, Margaret Lucille Glotfelty, McHenry, Shelby Jean Paugh and her husband, Dale, McHenry, and Betty Lou Roberts and her husband Junior, Elkins, W.Va.; three sisters, Bernadette Bittinger, Mountain Lake Park, Catherine McCullough, Friendsville, and Leona Dennis, Hopwood, Pa.; six grandchildren, Linda Wengard, Allen Glotfelty, Randall Glotfelty, Michelle Eggleston, Dwayne Roberts and Gary Savage; and seven great-grandchildren.
Friends may call at the Durst Funeral Home, Oakland, on Saturday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m.
Services will be conducted at the McHenry United Methodist Church on Sunday at 1 p.m. with the Rev. Samuel Wachter and the Rev. Ross Glotfelty officiating.
Interment will be in Garrett County Memorial Gardens.
The family requests memorials take the form of contributions to Hospice of Garrett County or the McHenry United Methodist Church.
NORMA X. SAVAGE
OAKLAND - Norma Xenia Savage, 77, of 97 West Cranesville Road, Oakland, died Saturday, Sept. 19, 1998, at Dennett Road Manor Nursing Home, Oakland.
Born June 8, 1921, in Morgantown, W.Va., she was a daughter of the late Earl Ray and Eulah Lee (Mays) Davis. She was also preceded in death by a son, Kenneth E. Savage; and a brother, Frank R. Davis.
Mrs. Savage was a member of Laurel Glen Church of the Brethren, Cranesville, W.Va., and was a homemaker.
She is survived by two sons, Raymond Savage, Perry, Ohio, Donald "Ed" Savage, Oakland; five daughters, Eloise Sisler, Friendsville, Nancy Altman, Florida, Barbara Beal, Meyersdale, Pa., Sue Briskey, Salisbury, Pa., Janice Johnson, Meadville, Tenn.; a brother, Arthur Davis, Ripley, W.Va.; 28 grandchildren; 19 great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren.
Friends will be received at the Newman Funeral Homes, P.A., Friendsville, on Monday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m.
Services will be conducted on Tuesday at 11 a.m. at Salem Church of the Brethren, Bruceton Mills, W.Va., with the Rev. Berlin H. Wilhelm officiating.
Interment will be in Blooming Rose cemetery, Friendsville.
Friends may call one hour prior to the services at the church.
Pallbearers, all grandsons, will be Rick Cosner, Clint Sisler, Scott Savage, Matt Briskey, Walter Beal and Victor Beal.
