ANNA V. SMITH
WESTERNPORT - Anna V. Smith, 84, of 400 Poplar St., Westernport, died Thursday, Jan. 8, 1998, at Sacred Heart Hospital.
She was born on Oct. 13, 1913, in Frostburg, the daughter of the late James Campbell and Annie Schramm Campbell. She also was preceded in death by her husband, Oliver Smith, in July, 1979.
Mrs. Smith was a retired secretary, having worked for Horace Whitworth, Attorney, for many years. She was a member of the First Baptist Church, Westernport, was a member of the Westernport Senior Citizens and the Victory Post Unit #155 Ladies Auxiliary. She also was an avid golfer.
Survivors include three sons, Oliver William Smith and wife, Bette, Kuttawa, Ky., James M. Smith and wife, Barbara, and Thomas C. Smith, both of Annapolis; a daughter, Norma Ayers, and husband, George, Barton; a brother, Thomas D. Campbell, Annapolis; a sister, Lena Kline, Westernport; eight grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren.
Friends will be received at the Boal Funeral Home, Westernport, on Saturday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m.
Services will be conducted at the First Baptist Church of Westernport on Sunday at 3 p.m. with the Rev. Homer Beeman officiating.
Interment will be in Philos cemetery, Westernport.
Victory Post #155 Ladies Auxiliary will hold a memorial service on Saturday evening at 7:30 p.m. at the funeral home.
BEULAH FRANCES SMITH
WESTERNPORT - Beulah Frances Smith, 89, of the Egle Nursing Home, Lonaconing, formerly of 513 Maryland Ave., Westernport, died Monday, May 25, 1998, at the nursing home.
Born at Mill Run on Feb. 16, 1909, she was the daughter of the late Jesse Michael and Martha (Smith) Michael. She also was preceded in death by one daughter, Frances Delores VanDoren; one son, David Lewis Wright; three brothers, Paul Michael, Raymond Michael and Alvin Michael; one granddaughter, Andrea Kay Reeder; and two husbands, Noah B. Wright and Warner C. Smith.
Mrs. Smith formerly worked at the Celanese. She was a member of the Piedmont Pentecostal Holiness Church, where she was a member of the Women's Association of the church, and she was always a very active church member.
She is survived by a son, Noah Wright, Swanton; three daughters, Christine McKenzie, Westernport, Anna Jean Marple, Cresaptown, and Nancy Crawford, Frostburg; two sisters, Mary Turnage, Hampton, Va., and Evelyn Hanlin, Moran Manor Nursing Home, Westernport; 10 grandchildren; and several great- and great-great-grandchildren.
Friends will be received at the Boal Funeral Home, Westernport, on Tuesday, May 26, from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m.
Funeral services will be conducted at the Piedmont Pentecostal Holiness Church on Wednesday, May 27, at 10 a.m. with the Rev. Donald Marple, the Rev. George Whitehurst, the Rev. Tom Brackett and the Rev. Rodney Casteel officiating.
Interment will be in the Philos cemetery, Westernport.
CHARLES A. SMITH
LAVALE - Charles Arthur Smith, 90, of National Highway, LaVale, died Wednesday, July 22, 1998, at the Allegany County Nursing Home.
Born April 15, 1908, in Cumberland, he was the son of the late Charles A. and Wilhelmia Smith. He also was preceded in death by his wife, Ethel (Zimmerly) Smith; and two brothers, Paul Smith and Harold Smith.
Mr. Smith was retired as a car salesman from Gateway Motors. He was a member of the Fort Cumberland Lodge 211 AF & AM; the McKinley Chapter Order of the Eastern Star; and the American Pigeon Association.
Surviving are a son, Ronald A. Smith and wife Virginia L., of Sun City Center, Fla., and formerly of Cumberland; one sister, Dorothy Vandegrift, Cumberland; five grandchildren, Douglas A. Smith and wife Dianna, Cumberland, Ronald Scott Smith and wife Wendy, Freeport, Maine, Debra Mathew and husband Jack, Rawlings, Shellie Deluca and husband Paul, Reisterstown, and Sherrie Adams, Bethany Beach, Del.; and eight great-grandchildren, Cassi and David Smith, Ryan and Siobhan Smith, Kelley and Dillon Mathew, Brian and Cynthia Adams.
Friends will be received at the Hafer Chapel of the Hills Mortuary, 1302 National Highway, LaVale, on Thursday from 7 to 9 p.m.
Funeral services will be conducted in the funeral home chapel on Friday, July 24, 1998, at 10 a.m. with the Rev. Bob Cook officiating.
Interment will follow in Sunset Memorial Park, Cumberland.
CLAYTON L. SMITH SR.
CUMBERLAND - Clayton L. Smith Sr., 92, of Cumberland, died Wednesday, Dec. 31, 1997, at Memorial Hospital.
Born Sept. 24, 1905, in Pennsylvania, he was the son of the late Jesse Abraham and Annie H. (Divelbiss) Smith. He also was preceded in death by his wife, Violet Marie Smith, in 1977; one son, Clayton L. Smith Jr.; and two sisters, Beulah M. Mencer and Alma I. Breighner.
Mr. Smith was a retired shop mechanic for the Western Maryland Railroad. He was a member of Sioux Council 64, Order of the Redman; and the Haystack Mountain Club.
Surviving are one daughter, Sharon Sue Parkinson and husband Laurence; one sister, Pearl Summers; two grandchildren, Laura Parkinson, and Robin Boston and husband Bryan, all of Cumberland.
Friends will be received at the Scarpelli Funeral Home, P.A., 108 Virginia Ave., Cumberland, on Saturday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m.
Funeral and interment services will be conducted at the funeral home on Sunday at 2 p.m. with the Rev. Wayne R. Turner officiating.
Interment will be in Sunset Memorial Park, Cumberland.
Honorary pallbearers will be Justin Ratke, Paul Appel, Don Mencer, Dave Lancaster, Art Breighner and Bruce Alt.
DAWN L. SMITH
CUMBERLAND - Dawn Lucille Smith, 73, died March 6, 1998, at Mary Conrad Center in Anchorage, Alaska. Ms. Smith was a longtime Cumberland resident, however due to health reasons went to Alaska in July 1997 to be with her daughter and son-in-law.
Ms. Smith was born July 26, 1924, in Morristown, N.J. Dawn supervised the clerical department at Alameda Naval Air Station in California until 1962 when she came to Cumberland with her husband and two children. Dawn was a former member of the Cumberland Women's Civic Club and volunteered much of her younger years to help the elderly and other organizations.
Dawn enjoyed being with her family. Her spirit and vitality always lifted the hearts of those around her.
Ms. Smith is survived by her son, William Smith Jr. of Cumberland; daughter and son-in-law, Saundra and Charles Feller Jr. of Willow, Alaska; two nieces and a nephew.
A small private ceremony was held at the home of her daughter, former Cumberland resident, Sandy Feller. Her ashes will be scattered at Deep Creek Lake.
ELIZABETH SMITH
FROSTBURG - Elizabeth (Brady) Smith, 89, formerly of Frostburg, died Thursday, July 16, 1998 at Huntsville, Ala. Hospital. She had been residing with her daughter, Catherine Smith Bahen in Huntsville.
Born Sept. 24, 1908, in Frostburg, she was the daughter of the late James and Genevieve (Manning) Brady. She also was preceded in death by her husband, Herbert Smith, in 1955.
Mrs. Smith retired from Frostburg State University as a Hall Supervisor. Prior to that she was self-employed as a Registered Nurse.
Surviving, in addition to her daughter, are one son, Darby Smith, New Market; five grandchildren, Julie Ann Brauner, Coral Springs, Fla., Marty Bahen, Seattle, Wash., Dan Bahen, Huntsville, Darby Smith and Catherine Smith, both of New Market; one great-grandson, Grant Brauner, Coral Springs; one sister, Genevieve Dolan; and two brothers, Joseph Brady and Leo Brady, all of Frostburg.
Friends will be received at the Sowers Funeral Home, P.A., 60 W. Main St., Frostburg, on Sunday from 7 to 9 p.m. The Rosary will be recited at 8:30 p.m.
The Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at St. Michael's Catholic Church, Frostburg, on Monday at 10 a.m. with the Rev. William Moody officiating.
Interment will be in St. Michael's cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be directed to St. Michael's Church in Mrs. Smith's name.
F. PERRY SMITH JR.
CUMBERLAND - F. Perry Smith Jr., 81, of Cumberland, died Saturday, June 13, 1998, at Sacred Heart Hospital.
Born Sept. 9, 1916, in Cumberland, he was the son of the late Fulcher P. Smith Sr. and Marie (Somerville) Smith. He also was preceded in death by two sisters, Fannabel Reider and Patricia Erker.
Mr. Smith was former owner and operator of Cumberland Box and Mill Co. Inc., and Pergin Farm, Garrett County. He was the former Mayor of Cumberland from 1974 to 1978. He was a 1934 graduate of Allegany High School; 1935 graduate of Mercersburg Academy; and 1939 BA Cum Laude graduate of Princeton University. He was a former U.S. Navy Lt. J.G. having served during World War II.
He was the previous director of the Cumberland Region, First United National Bank and Trust Advisory Board; member of the Rotary Club of Cumberland for 47 years, where he served as past President and District Governor for two terms; member of Maryland Health Resources Planning Commission, where he was chairman of the Executive Committee; member of the Governing Board Health Systems Agency of Western Maryland; Chairman of the Board of Trustees of the State Universities and Colleges; Director of the Maryland State Chamber of Commerce and Western Maryland Chamber of Commerce; Chairman of the Judicial Selection Committee for the Fourth Judicial District; member of the Maryland State Parks Planning Commission, Memorial Hospital Board of Governors, Tri-County Council for Western Maryland Inc., and Governor's Commission on Law Enforcement and Administration of Justice, Incorporated, trustee; and member and past officer of the Health Planning Council of Appalachia Maryland Inc.
Mr. Smith received the Brotherhood Award from the National Conference of Christians and Jews in 1975 and the Paul Harris Fellow Rotary International Award two times.
Surviving are two daughters, Hollie Smith Kershaw and husband Paul, Adelaide, Australia, and Virginia Smith Craig and husband Mark, Deer Park; four grandchildren, Samuel S. Durland Jr., Logan G. Sell, Kailee C. Craig and Kenzie D. Craig; and two sisters, Constance Franklin and husband Joseph, Arlington, Va., and Ann Smith and husband Adrian, Pittsburgh.
Friends will be received at the Scarpelli Funeral Home, P.A., 108 Virginia Ave., Cumberland, Sunday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m.
Funeral services will be conducted at the funeral home Monday at 10 a.m.
At Mr. Smith's request, his body will be cremated and the cremains buried at Hillcrest Memorial Park at a later date.
The family requests that contributions be made to the charity of the donor's choice.
