PHYLLIS J. STEELE
CUMBERLAND - Phyllis Jean Steele, age 70, of Greene Street, Cumberland, died Tuesday, Nov. 24, 1998, at the home of her son, Orrie Bruce Bayliss III, in Little Orleans.
Born Nov. 2, 1928, in Alexandria, Va., she was the daughter of the late James Henry and Mary Elizabeth Adams Hicks, and the widow of Robert Leonard Steele Sr.
She was employed by the CIA including six years in Germany, and the National Science Foundation in Arlington, Va. She was affiliated with the Friends Aware Inc., in Cumberland.
She is survived by one daughter, Phyllis Ann Steele, Cumberland; two sons, Orrie Bruce Bayliss III and Robert Leonard Steele, both of Little Orleans; one brother, Paul Luther Hicks of Arlington, Va. Also surviving are five grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.
Besides her husband she was preceded in death by one sister, Lucille Peyton; and one brother, James Hicks.
Services will be held on Saturday, Nov. 28, at 1 p.m. at the Grove Funeral Home, 141 W. Main St., Hancock.
The family will receive friends at the Grove Funeral Home, Hancock, on Friday from 7 to 9 p.m.
Interment will be at the convenience of the family.
MAURINE L. STEELY
GREENWOOD, S.C. - Maurine Lunt Steely, 87, of 1110 Marshall Road, widow of Martin L. Steely, died Saturday, Feb. 14, 1998, at the Greenwood Methodist Home.
Born in Superior, Neb., she was a daughter of the late William A. and Maude Erwin Steely.
She received her B.S. degree in chemistry from the University of Nebraska, and was a medical laboratory technician with the Children's Heart Hospital in Philadelphia, Pa. She was a member of the Wildwood Garden Club and attended St. John's United Methodist Church in Aiken and Main Street United Methodist Church in Greenwood.
Surviving are a daughter, Marilyn Steely of Montreal, Quebec, Canada; a sister, Margaret Nelson of Denver, Colo.; and a brother, Albert W. Lunt of Denver.
The family respectfully requests that flowers be omitted and memorials made to the Greenwood Methodist Home, 1110 Marshall Road, Greenwood, SC 29646 or to the Nuckolls County Historical Society, Superior, Neb.
GEORGE STEIGERWALD
ROBERTS PLACE - George Theodore Steigerwald, 95, of Roberts Place, died Friday, April 24, 1998, at the Memorial Hospital Hospice Unit.
Born Nov. 21, 1902, in Pittsburgh, Pa., he was the son of the late John and Mary Margaret (Connery) Steigerwald.
He also was preceded in death by his first wife, Edna (Hammond) Steigerwald, in October 1964, and his second wife, Bertha Lewis Steigerwald, in June 1997.
Mr. Steigerwald was a World War I Army veteran, having served on the Mexican Border.
Mr. Steigerwald was a steamfitter under Local #449, Pittsburgh, where he was the oldest member.
He was a member of Potomac Park United Methodist Church; a life member of Fort Cumberland Post #13, American Legion; and Henry Hart Post #1411, V.F.W. He actively served on the combined veterans honor guard. Mr. Steigerwald was a charter member of the Bowling Green Volunteer Fire Department.
Survivors include his daughter, Mary Ruppenkamp and husband, Edward, Cumberland; four grandchildren, Michael Ruppenkamp and wife, Peggy, LaVale, Teresa Whitworth and husband, Horace, Richmond, Va., Marilyn Felten and husband, Edward, Fayetteville, N.C., and Elaine Cessna and husband, Marty, St. Paul's, N.C.; 10 great-grandchildren; and six step-children, Geneva C. Nave, Cumberland, Elroy M. Lewis, Mountain Home, Ark., Carlson P. Lewis, Ellerslie, Audrey C. Manning, Marshfield, Mo., Patricia A. Lewis, Mountain Home, and Gary C. Lewis, Chicago, Ill.
Friends will be received at the Upchurch Funeral Home, P.A., corner of Greene and Smallwood streets, Cumberland, on Sunday from 3 to 5 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m.
The funeral service will be held in the funeral home on Monday at 11 a.m. with the Rev. James L. McMahan officiating.
Interment will be in St. Mary's cemetery.
Military honors will be accorded by the combined veterans honor guard.
Serving as pallbearers are Past Commanders of Fort Cumberland Post #13, American Legion: Bill Andrews, Tony DeArcangelis, Walt Durbin, Charles Griffith, John Shipley and Bob Snoeberger.
GEORGE C. STEIN
CUMBERLAND - George C. Stein, 71, of Cumberland, died Monday, April 27, 1998, at the Cumberland Nursing Center.
Born Dec. 12, 1926, in Cumberland, he was the son of the late George T. and Florence (Cangley) Stein.
He also was preceded in death by his wife, Mary Lou (Lippold) Stein in 1996.
Mr. Stein was a 1944 graduate of Allegany High School. He also graduated from Catherman's Business School.
He was the Purchasing Agent and Office Manager for Cumberland Steel.
Mr. Stein served two terms, from 1982-1990, on the Allegany County Board of Education. He had held the position of President two times.
He was a member of St. John Lutheran Church; East Gate Lodge #216, A.F. & A.M.; 33rd degree - Cumberland Scottish Rite Bodies; Ali Ghan Shrine; Civil Service Commission; and was a lifetime member of the Maryland State Council of P.T.A.
Mr. Stein also taught piano and organ for many years at Family Music. He served as organist for his lodge at the Masonic Temple, St. Matthew's United Church of Christ for over 25 years, and St. Luke's Lutheran Church.
Survivors include his son, Gary Stein, and wife, Louise, Cumberland; two daughters, Linda Finster, and husband, Walter, and Karen Sue Spangler, and husband, James, all of Cumberland; one brother, Ronald J. Stein, and wife, Carol, Gainesville, Fla.; one sister, Billie Jean Root, De Bary, Fla.; six grandchildren, Elisa Lambert, and husband, Terrance, Amy Chorpenning, and husband, Jason, Bradley Spangler, Lauren Finster, Elizabeth Stein and Christopher Stein; and nieces and nephews.
Friends will be received at the Upchurch Funeral Home, P.A., corner of Greene and Smallwood streets, Cumberland, on Wednesday from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m.
East Gate Lodge #216, A.F. & A.M. will conduct a memorial service at the funeral home on Wednesday at 7:30 p.m.
The funeral service will be held at St. John Lutheran Church on Thursday at 1 p.m. with the Rev. Mark Dill officiating, and assisted by the Rev. Richard Barley.
Interment will be in Sunset Memorial Park.
Pallbearers will be Thomas Shaffer, Dale Lewis, Dr. Harold Winstanley, Joe Martirano, Tom Wagner and Milton Pfarr. Honorary pallbearer will be Adrienne Ottaviani.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Cumberland Nursing Center Sunshine Club, 512 Winifred Road, Cumberland, MD 21502.
ERVIN STEINMETZ JR.
CUMBERLAND - Ervin Steinmetz Jr., 69, of Maryland Avenue, Cumberland, went to be with the Lord on Thursday, July 9, 1998, at Memorial Hospital.
Born Feb. 5, 1929, in Wiley Ford, W.Va., he was the son of the late Irvin and Mary (Porter) Steinmetz. He was preceded in death by one daughter, Elizabeth Elaine Andrews; one brother, George W. Steinmetz; and five sisters, Margaret Peer, Mary Edna Scharf, Ann Phillips, Regina Long and Martha Natale.
Mr. Steinmetz was a member of SS. Peter & Paul Catholic Church, Cumberland. He also was an avid supporter of the Fraternal Order of Police. He was a member of the Local #616 LIUNA and worked for many years as a laborer for Hayes Construction Company. He was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II.
Surviving are his wife, Dorothy (Bishop) Steinmetz; four sons, Arthur Lee Steinmetz, and wife, Cindy, Cumberland, James Ervin Steinmetz Peer, and wife, Mary Ann, Ridgeley, W.Va., John L. Steinmetz, and wife, Carol, Abner Leroy Curtis Steinmetz, and wife, Peggy, all of Cumberland; three daughters, Ruth R. Hunt, and husband, Mark, Tina M. Meisenhalder, and Josephine D. White, all of Cumberland; two brothers, Francis Steinmetz, John Steinmetz, and wife, Esther; five sisters, Katherine Perry, Thelma Wharton, Gladys Ritchie, and husband, Kurt, Josephine Aldridge, and Marie McMillan, all of Cumberland; six granddaughters; nine grandsons; and 12 great-grandchildren.
Friends will be received at the Scarpelli Funeral Home, P.A., 108 Virginia Ave., Friday from 7 to 9 p.m. and Saturday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. A rosary will be conducted at the funeral home on Saturday at 8 p.m.
Funeral services will be conducted at the funeral home on Sunday at 1 p.m. with Fr. Thomas R. Bevan officiating.
Interment will be in Sunset Memorial Park. Graveside military honors will be accorded by the Combined Veterans Honor Guard.
