ALVA VICTOR ROSS
SWANTON-Alva Victor Ross, 87, of 45 Ross Savage Road, Swanton, died Monday, Dec. 7, 1998, at the Dennett Road Manor Nursing Home, Oakland.
Born Jan. 5, 1911, in Westernport, he was the son of the late Mortimore and Rose Ellen (Dunk) Ross. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by two brothers, Vernon Ross and Edwin Ross; and two half-brothers, Walter Ross and James Ross.

Mr. Ross was retired from the Westvaco Corporation, where he was a pipefitter. He was a U.S. Army Veteran of World War II, and was a life member of Victory Post Unit #155, American Legion.

He is survived by his wife, Mary (Thompson) Ross; two foster daughters, Susan Lorraine Ross Wilt, Hawaii, and Cheryl Lynn Ross Wilt, Mountain Lake Park; two sisters, Mildred Lindsey, LaVale, Pearl Kazlo, Westernport; three grandchildren, Morgan Lynn Blackburn, Sarah Elizabeth Wilt, and Julie Marie Wilt; and several nieces and nephews.

There will be no visitation.

Graveside services will be held at the Philos cemetery, Westernport, Wednesday, Dec. 9, at 1 p.m. by the Rev. Sumner Sawyers. Full military honors will be accorded by the Combined Veterans Honor Guard.

Arrangements are under the direction of Boal Funeral Home, Westernport.

ANNA L. ROWAN
CUMBERLAND - Anna Lee Rowan, 69, of 636 Fayette St., Cumberland, died Aug. 6, 1998, at Memorial Hospital, Cumberland.
Born April 24, 1929, at Gilmore, she was the daughter of the late Charles E. and Rhoda (Donald) Robertson. She was also preceded in death by a brother, Charles E. Robertson Jr.

Mrs. Rowan was retired from Peskins Department Store. She was a member of St. Mary's Catholic Church, Lonaconing.

She is survived by her husband, James J. Rowan; one daughter, Katherine Ann James, and husband, Stephen; one grandson, Patrick R. James, all of Dale City, Va.; three sisters, Mary Lou Muir, and husband, Amel, Lonaconing, Sylvia Trenum, and husband, Allen, Westernport, and Linda Coleman, and husband, Tom, Lonaconing; two great-grandchildren, Kelsey-Anne James and Mollie Kate James; and a number of nieces and nephews.

Friends will be received at the Boal Funeral Home, Lonaconing, on Saturday, Aug. 8, from 7 to 9 p.m.

Funeral services will be conducted at the funeral home on Sunday, Aug. 9, at 1 p.m. by Father Paul Byrnes.

Interment will be in Sunset Memorial Park, Cumberland.

Pallbearers will be Bruce Muir, Charlie Muir, Jeff Coleman, Matt Coleman, Brett Coleman and Allen Trenum.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to Hospice of Memorial Hospital.

ALTON "DEACON" DOUGHMAN ROWLES
CUMBERLAND - Mr. Alton "Deacon" Doughman Rowles, 92, formerly of Silver Creek, N.Y., passed away Monday, April 27, 1998, at Devlin Manor Nursing Home, Cumberland.
Born Nov. 15, 1905, in Grampian, Pa., he was the son of the late John Perry Rowles and Lou (Doughman) Rowles. He also was preceded in death by his wife, Evelyn (Faltz) Rowles.

He was a retired superintendent on bridge construction on the New York Thruway System.

He is survived by three sons, S. Royce Rowles and wife, Connie, Canton, Conn., Richard "Dick" Rowles Sr. and wife, Mary Lou, LaVale, Walter Rowles and wife, Dolly, Brewster, Mass.; one daughter, Nancy Calogeras and husband, Tom, Middlebury Heights, Ohio; one step-daughter, Phyllis Davies and husband, Bill, Jamestown, N.Y.; one brother, John Rowles and wife, Wilma, Big Run, Pa.; 19 grandchildren; 31 great-grandchildren; and five great-great-grandchildren.

Mr. Rowles requested that he be cremated at the Cumberland Crematory. A memorial service will be held at a later date. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be directed to the Christ Lutheran Church Memorial Garden Fund, LaVale, MD 21502.

The Merritt-Adams Funeral Home, P.A., 404 Decatur St., Cumberland, was in charge of arrangements.

ALYCE W. ROWLEY
FROSTBURG - Alyce W. Rowley, 86, of 61 Victoria Lane, Frostburg, died Sunday, Oct. 25, 1998, at the Frostburg Village Nursing Home.
Born Sept. 18, 1911, in Frostburg, she was the daughter of the late John and Veronica (Hoben) Wilson. She also was preceded in death by her husband, Robert Dean Rowley Sr.; and two brothers, Vernon Wilson and John Wilson.

Mrs. Rowley was a homemaker and a member of St. Michael's Catholic Church, Frostburg. She was an avid bridge player and golfer.

Surviving are three sons, Robert Dean Rowley Jr. and wife Nancy, Erie, Pa., John H. Rowley and wife Alice, Franklin, N.C., and James R. Rowley and wife Mary Shea, Atlanta; a sister, Mary Wilson Peretti, Frostburg; two brothers, Paul Wilson, Shaft, and James Wilson, Frostburg; four grandchildren, Karen Rowley Butler, York, Pa., Robert Dean Rowley III, Bear, Del., Hanna Marie Rowley, Franklin, N.C., and Katherine Shea Rowley, Atlanta; two great-grandchildren, David Austin Butler Jr. and Kellie Christine Butler, both of York, Pa.; and several nieces and nephews.

Friends will be received at the Durst Funeral Home, 57 Frost Ave., Frostburg, on Monday from 7 to 9 p.m.

Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at St. Michael's Catholic Church on Tuesday at 1 p.m. with the Rev. Paul Byrnes as celebrant.

Interment will be in the Yellow Creek Presbyterian Church, Wellsville, Ohio, at a later date.

The family requests that memorials be directed to St. Michael's School, 56 E. Main St., Frostburg, MD 21532.

JOHN B. ROY SR
CUMBERLAND - John Baxter Roy Sr., 78, of Cumberland, formerly of Clearville, Pa., died Monday, Nov. 30, 1998, at his home.
Born Sept. 27, 1920, in Ridgeley, W.Va., he was the son of the late Olie Roy and Retta (Nelson) Verbal. He was also preceded in death by one granddaughter.

Mr. Roy retired as a brakeman from the B&O; Railroad, and was on disability after 40-plus years of service. He attended Grace Memorial Community Church, LaVale. During World War II, he served as a Sergeant in the U.S. Marines in China. Mr. and Mrs. Roy just observed their 50th wedding anniversary on Nov. 20.

Surviving are his devoted wife, Lois (Myers) Roy; four daughters, Retta Fluke and husband, John, Orlando, Fla., Mary Jane Whitfield and husband, Richard, York, Pa., Lois Weaver and husband, Frank, Bedford, Pa., Hester Lynn Molovich and husband, Ralph, Clearville, Pa.; one son, John B. Roy, Jr. and wife, Rebecca, Germantown; two sisters; one brother; six grandchildren; one step-grandson; four great-grandchildren; seven nieces; and one nephew. Friends will be received at Scarpelli Funeral Home, P.A., 108 Virginia Ave., on Wednesday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m.

Funeral services will be conducted at the funeral home on Thursday at 1 p.m. with Pastor Jeff Peeler officiating.

Interment will be in Hillcrest Memorial Park, Cumberland. Graveside military services will be accorded by the Combined Veterans Honor Guard. The family requests contributions be made to the American Heart Association.

CUMBERLAND - Friends will be received for John B. Roy Sr. at the Scarpelli Funeral Home, P.A., 108 Virginia Ave., Cumberland, on Wednesday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m.
Funeral services will be conducted at the funeral home Thursday at 1 p.m.

Interment will be in Hillcrest Memorial Park, Cumberland. Graveside military services will be accorded by the Combined Veterans Honor Guard.

The family requests that contributions be made to the American Heart Association.

PRISCILLA J. ROY
CUMBERLAND - Priscilla J. Roy, 57, of Cumberland, died on Monday, July 13, 1998, at her residence.
Born Aug. 18, 1940, in Petersburg, W.Va., she was the daughter of Richard Smith, Keyser, W.Va., and the late Rhoda (Nelson) Cameron. She was preceded in death by her husband, Glen E. Roy, who died in April 1986; two brothers, Carl Conrad and Richard W. Conrad.

Mrs. Roy was a homemaker. She was a Protestant by faith.

In addition to her father, surviving are three sons, Terry Lee Smith, and wife, Michelle, Charles Wayne Self, and wife, Loretta, all of Baltimore, Robert E. Roy, Cumberland; four daughters, Brenda L. Wilson, and husand, Kenneth, Mississippi, Virginia S. Curry, Cumberland, Delena M. Roy, Baltimore, Martha E. Palmer, and husband, Anthony, Rawlings; three brothers, William G. Conrad, Cabins, W.Va., Charles E. Conrad, and wife, Judy, Augusta, W.Va., Earl L. Conrad, and wife, Mary, Charles Town, W.Va.; three sisters, Maxine Layton, and husband, Clyde, Cumberland, Rose E. Thorpe, Mary S. Maiorino, both of Baltimore; 28 grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren.

Friends will be received at the Scarpelli Funeral Home, P.A., 108 Virginia Ave., on Wednesday from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m.

Services will be conducted at the funeral home on Thursday at 1 p.m. with the Rev. Waco Biser officiating.

Interment will be in the Dolly cemetery, Burlington, W.Va.

BESSIE L. RUBY
FROSTBURG - Bessie Luella (DeVault) Ruby, 95, of Ruby's Industrial Road, Frostburg, died Wednesday, Feb. 25, 1998, at Sacred Heart Hospital.
Born April 25, 1902, in Lonaconing, she was the daughter of the late James DeVault and Rebecca (Metz) DeVault. She also was preceded in death by her husband, Ford Ruby; a son, Kenneth DeVault; brothers James, Charles, Alexander and Alvin DeVault; sisters Carrie Dome and Evelyn McKenzie; and stepmother, Leah DeVault.

Mrs. Ruby was a member of the Frostburg Jehovah's Witnesses and was a housewife.

Surviving are three sons, Roy DeVault, Marshall Ruby and Gerald Ruby, all of Frostburg; a daughter, Leona Woods, Frostburg; sisters, Jean DeVault, Ruth Golden and Allene Sponaugle, all of Cumberland; brothers, Richard DeVault, Myrtle Beach, S.C., Robert DeVault, Pinto, and Homer DeVault, Alexandria, Va.; 15 grandchildren; and numerous great-grandchildren.

Friends will be received at the Hafer Frost Mansion Funeral Home, 58 Frost Ave., Frostburg, on Friday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m.

Services will be conducted in the funeral home chapel on Saturday at 1 p.m. with John Richmond officiating.

Interment will be in Frostburg Memorial Park.
