PHILLIPS W. PETERS SR.
BALTIMORE - On Dec. 7, 1998, Phillips Windsor Peters Sr., 91, of Baltimore, died at Charlestown Care Center.
Mr. Peters was one of the original residents of Charlestown Retirement Community, moving there in 1984 from his home in Catonsville, where he had lived for 43 years. Mr. Peters retired from the Chesapeake and Potomac Telephone Company in 1972 after close to 45 years with the company. He and his wife, Irma, taught ceramics classes in the Catonsville area for many years.
He was the beloved husband of the late Irma K. Peters; loving father of Phillips W. Peters Jr., Littlestown, Pa., and Anne M. Allen, Wilmington, Del. He is also survived by eight grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild.
The family will receive friends at the MacNabb Funeral Home, 301 Frederick Road, Catonsville, on Wednesday from 7 to 9 p.m. and Thursday from 11 a.m. to noon, where services will be held at noon.
Interment will be in the Lorraine Park cemetery, Woodlawn.
Memorial contributions may be made to one's favorite charity.
NELLIE V. PETERSON
CUMBERLAND - Nellie V. Peterson, of 10 N. Liberty St., Cumberland Arms, Cumberland, died Wednesday, June 24, 1998, at Sacred Heart Hospital.
Born in Elkins, W.Va., she was the daughter of the late Sterling W. Ryan and the late Delta M. (Humphrey) Ryan. She also was preceded in death by her husband, Eugene H. Peterson, in 1992; and a son, Eugene F. Peterson, in 1995.
Mrs. Peterson was a member of St. Patrick's Catholic Church.
Surviving are a daughter, Nancy R. Peterson, Germantown; a son, Gary M. Peterson and wife Marilyn, Wilbwick, Ohio; seven grandchildren, Eugene F. Peterson III, Terri Yocklovich, Grace Peterson, Jason Peterson, Nicholas Peterson, Laura Olsieski and Michael R. Tozser; and four great-grandchildren.
Friends will be received at the Merritt-Adams Funeral Home, P.A., 404 Decatur St., Cumberland, on Friday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m.
Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at St. Patrick's Catholic Church on Saturday at 9 a.m. with the Rev. Thomas R. Bevan as celebrant.
A Wake Service will be held at the funeral hone on Friday at 8 p.m.
Burial in St. Patrick's Catholic cemetery will be private.
CHARLES E. PETTIE
ORLANDO, Fla. - Charles E. Pettie, 91, of Orlando, died Jan. 17, 1998.
Born Nov. 23, 1906, he was the son of the late Enoch and Dolly Pettie. He was preceded in death by his wife, Helen; his second wife, Margaret; his son, Charles W. Pettie; and his sister, Virginia Frantz.
Mr. Pettie graduated from Allegany High School and retired from the Celanese Corp. He attended the First Baptist Church in Orlando.
Surviving are his wife, Dorothy; his sister, Elizabeth Llewellyn; a daughter, Shirley Lowrey, Cumberland; eight grandchildren; 18 great-grandchildren; and five great-great-grandchildren.
Services were held Jan. 20, 1998, in Orlando.
JOHN H. PFEIFFER
LAVALE - John Henry Pfeiffer, 76, of 112 Mary St., LaVale, died on Tuesday, Dec. 15, 1998, at Sacred Heart Hospital.
Born Sept. 14, 1922, in Cumberland, he was the son of the late Henry Daniel Pfeiffer and the late Mary A. (Johnson) Pfeiffer. He was also preceded in death by his first wife, Josephine (Blume) Pfeiffer.
Mr. Pfeiffer was a retired manager in the billing department at Kelly-Springfield Tire Company. He was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church, U.C.T., Ornithological Bird Club, and the Archeological Society. He was a veteran of World War II as a U.S. Army Air Force Major.
Surviving are his wife, Jeanne (Dauphin) Pfeiffer, LaVale; his stepmother, Lucy Pfeiffer, Cumberland; a daughter, Jeanne Marie Smith and husband, Bruce, Cumberland; two sons, John Keith Pfeiffer and wife, Cheryl Ann, Wilmington, N.C., Stephen Carl Pfeiffer, Houston, Texas; four sisters, Dorothy E. Pfeiffer Calvin, Havre de Grace, Miss Mary Margaret Pfeiffer, Baltimore, Helen Jean Pfeiffer Edwards, Dundalk, and Rosie E. Pfeiffer Skidmore, Cumberland; two brothers, Henry D. Pfeiffer, Middletown, and Howard Pfeiffer, Cumberland; eight grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.
Friends will be received at the Merritt-Adams Funeral Home, P.A., 404 Decatur St., Cumberland, on Friday from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m.
Services will be conducted on Saturday at 11 a.m. at Trinity Lutheran Church, 326 N. Centre St., Cumberland, with the Rev. Stephen C. Sweyko officiating. The body will be taken to the church at 10 a.m.
Interment will be in Hillcrest Burial Park.
Military honors will be accorded at graveside by the Combined Veterans Honor Guard.
Donations may be directed to Trinity Lutheran Church; the Leukemia Fund; or to the donor's choice of charity.
NELSON L. PHILLIPS
CUMBERLAND - Nelson Lester Phillips, 80, of Cumberland, died Thursday, Oct. 29, 1998, at Memorial Hospital.
Born Dec. 8, 1917, in Ohio, he was the son of the late John and Maude (Preston) Phillips. He also was preceded in death by his wife, Phyllis Virginia (Wallizer) Phillips; five brothers, John Phillips Jr., Ray Phillips, Bob Phillips, Norman Phillips and Leonard Phillips; and three sisters, Dorothy Lease, Isabelle Cecil and Mary Phillips.
Mr. Phillips was retired from the Celanese Corp. He was a member of the Apostolic Church of Jesus.
Surviving are one brother, Dewey Phillips and wife Leona, Cumberland; three sisters, Elva Roche and Linnie Jones, both of Cumberland, and Rita Elfritz, Barrelville; and several nieces and nephews.
Friends will be received at the Scarpelli Funeral Home, P.A., 108 Virginia Ave., Cumberland, Friday from 3 to 5 and 7 to 9 p.m.
Funeral services will be conducted at the funeral home Saturday at 2:30 p.m. with Pastor James Glass and Pastor Gregory Georg officiating.
Interment will be in Hillcrest Memorial Park, Cumberland.
Pallbearers will be Joseph Glass, James Whisner, James Bean and Keith DeVault.
WILLIAM E. PHILLIPS
CUMBERLAND - William Edgar Phillips, 57, of Cumberland, loving husband, father, son and brother, died Thursday Aug. 27, 1998.
Born Dec. 7, 1940, in Ridgeley, W.Va., he was the son of the late Harry Glenn and Elrose Elizabeth Phillips.
Mr. Phillips was a senior research scientist for 26 years at Alliant Tech Systems at Allegany Ballistics Laboratory, Rocket Center, W.Va. He was a Lutheran by faith and a veteran of the United States Navy.
Mr. Phillips was a 1958 graduate of LaSalle High School and a 1971 graduate of Frostburg State University, formerly Frostburg State College, where he received his B.A. degree in Chemistry.
Mr. Phillips was a computer expert, a frequent blood donor, and an avid fan of the Washington Redskins and the Baltimore Ravens football teams, and the Baltimore Orioles baseball team. He assisted the coaching of his son's Hot Stove League baseball team, the Jaycees.
Surviving are his loving wife of 35 years, Patricia Ann (Bittner) Phillips; a son, David William Phillips and fiancee, Alicia Northcraft, both of LaVale; a daughter, Laura Ann Phillips, Pittsburgh, Pa.; three sisters, Anna Frances Phillips, Bedford, Pa., formerly of Carpendale, W.Va., Mrs. Hazel Hager and husband, Louis, Bedford, Pa., Mrs. Mary Peer and husband, Curtis, Wiley Ford, W.Va.; a sister-in-law, Helen "Cookie" Baker and husband, George, Cumberland; a brother-in-law, James Bittner and wife, Jackie, Ridgeley; many special nieces and nephews, including one local niece, Mrs. Michelle Harris, Cumberland.
Friends will be received at the Scarpelli Funeral Home, P.A., 108 Virginia Ave., on Saturday from 7 to 9 p.m. and Sunday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m.
Funeral services will be conducted at the funeral home on Monday at 1 p.m. with Chaplain Lewis Twigg officiating.
Pallbearers will be George Baker, David Jenkins, John Northcraft, Doug Ruppenkamp, Carper Sensabaugh and Steve Sensabaugh.
Honorary pallbearers will be James Bittner, Gregg Hager, James Harris and Thomas Lueck.
Interment will be in Hillcrest Memorial Park, Cumberland. Military honors will be accorded by the Combined Veterans Honor Guard.
