CATHERINE J. MEASE
HAGERSTOWN - Catherine Josephine Mease, 87, of 11 W. Baltimore St., Apt. 1110, Hagerstown, died Wednesday, Feb. 4, 1998, at the Washington County Hospital, Hagerstown.
Born July 19, 1910, in Rowlesburg, W.Va., she was the daughter of the late Leo and Mary (Berghman) Spicer. She also was preceded in death by three sisters, Louise McKemmy, Martha May and Loretta Owens; and two brothers, George Spicer and Frank Spicer.
Mrs. Mease was retired from Dorbee Manufacturing. She was of the Catholic faith.
Surviving are her son, Donald Mease, Falling Waters, W.Va.; five sisters, Frances Grise, Cumberland, Regina Keefauver, Frederick, Lucille Hershberger, Ohio, Martha E. Woodcock and Dorothy Hemphill, both of Hagerstown; one brother, Charles May, Cumberland; four grandsons, Don Mease Jr. and Brian Mease, both of Hagerstown, Thomas Mease, Smithsburg, and Charles Mease, Mercersburg, Pa.; six great-grandchildren; and nieces and nephews.
The family will receive friends at the Minnich Funeral Home, 415 E. Wilson Blvd., Hagerstown, on Friday from 7 to 9 p.m., and one hour prior to the services.
Services will be held at the funeral home on Saturday at 1 p.m. with the Rev. George A. Limmer officiating.
Burial will be in Cedar Lawn Memorial Park, Hagerstown.
JOHN EVAN MEESE
BARTON - John Evan Meese, 84, of 219 Magruder Lane, Barton, died Saturday, Feb. 21, 1998 at the Frostburg Village Nursing Home, Frostburg.
He was born May 8, 1913, at Barton, a son of the late John Wesley Meese and the late Maude (Hansel) Meese.
He was retired from Westvaco Corporation, having been a Millwright.
He was Methodist by faith, and was a member of Barton Allegany Lodge #157 A.F. & A.M., a 32nd degree Mason, a member of the Ali Ghan Shrine Club, a Boy Scout leader for nine years, and a 4-H leader for 10 years. He also was a member of the former Piedmont Moose where he served as Governor five times.
Surviving are his wife, Martha Thyerl (Ayers) Meese; two sons, Harry Meese and wife, Darlene, Virginia Beach, Va.; Charles Meese and wife, Carol, Barton; one sister, Nellie O'Halloran, Naples, Fla; 10 grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.
At Mr. Meese's request he was cremated.
Family graveside services will be held at a later date.
The Boal Funeral Home, Barton, is in charge of the arrangements.
WANDA L. MELLON
CUMBERLAND - Wanda L. Mellon, 70, of Cumberland, died Sunday, Sept. 13, 1998, at her residence.
Born Oct. 21, 1927, in Cumberland, she was the daughter of the late Jacob M. and Helen (Gumm) Bush. She was preceded in death by two sisters, Mildred C. Smith, Virginia Roland; one brother, Howard Bush; and a grandson, Brian Whitacre.
Mrs. Mellon was a retired manager from Memorial Hospital Medical Center-Credit Union with 28 years of service.
She was a 1946 graduate of St. Mary's High School. She was a member of St. Mary's Catholic Church, the VFW Henry Hart Post #1411 Auxiliary, American Legion Fort Cumberland Post #13 Ladies Auxiliary, Cumberland Outdoor Club Auxiliary, St. Mary's Sodality, a volunteer in the Hospice Program at Memorial Hospital Hospice, and a volunteer at the Veterans Outpatient Clinic, Cumberland.
Surviving are her husband, James E. Mellon Sr.; two sons, James E. Mellon II and wife, Bonnie, Hagerstown, Donald F. Mellon and wife, Irma, San Antonio, Texas; two daughters, Sharon A. Whitacre and husband, Ron, LaVale, Deborah F. Wadle and husband, Rick, San Antonio; nine grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews.
Friends will be received at the Scarpelli Funeral Home, P.A., 108 Virginia Ave., on Wednesday from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. A Christian Wake will be conducted Wednesday at 8:30 p.m.
Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at St. Mary's Catholic Church on Thursday at 1 p.m. with Fr. Milton A. Hipsley as celebrant.
Interment will be in St. Mary's cemetery, Cumberland.
WANDA L. MELLON
CUMBERLAND - Friends for Wanda L. Mellon will be received at the Scarpelli Funeral Home, P.A., 108 Virginia Ave., on Wednesday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. A Christian Wake will be conducted Wednesday at 8:30 p.m.
Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at St. Mary's Catholic Church on Thursday at 1 p.m.
Interment will be in St. Mary's cemetery.
Pallbearers will be grandsons Adam Whitacre, David Mellon, J.T. Mellon, J.L. Lassere, along with Mickey Bush, Herbert Whitacre and John Blake.
A memorial service will be conducted by the VFW Ladies Auxiliary on Wednesday at 7:30 p.m. at the funeral home.
EDWARD J. MELVIN
FAIRFAX, Va. - Edward J. Melvin, 55, of Fairfax, died Tuesday, Sept. 8, 1998, at the INOVA Fairfax Hospital.
Born April 12, 1943, in Cumberland, Md., he was the son of Edward L. Melvin, Cumberland, and the late Louise (Stegmaier) Melvin.
Mr. Melvin was the owner/operator of a computer consultation organization. He was a 1961 graduate of LaSalle High School, attended Potomac State College and graduated from West Virginia University. He was a member of St. Ambrose Catholic Church, Fairfax, Cumberland Council 586 Knights of Columbus, and the Fairfax Country Club. He was an avid golfer. A U.S. Army veteran, he served in the Vietnam era.
Surviving in addition to his father are his wife, Liane (Parkinson) Melvin; one son, David Anthony Melvin and wife Jennifer, Boulder, Colo.; one daughter, Samantha Ann Melvin, at home; one brother, Thomas P. Melvin and wife Nina, Cumberland; two sisters, Caroljeanne Snyder and husband Tim, Ridgeley, W.Va., and Elizabeth "Bette" Manns and husband Bob, Cumberland; seven nieces and nephews; and three great-nieces and -nephews.
Friends will be received at the Scarpelli Funeral Home, P.A., 108 Virginia Ave., Cumberland, Friday from 7 to 9 p.m. A Christian Wake will be conducted at the funeral home Friday at 8:45 p.m.

Interment will be in St. Mary's cemetery, Cumberland. Graveside military honors will be accorded by the Combined Veterans Honor Guard.
CATHERINE E. "MANDY" MERBAUGH
FROSTBURG - Catherine E. "Mandy" Merbaugh, 95, of Frostburg, formerly of Ocean, died Sunday, Aug. 16, 1998, at Frostburg Village Nursing Home.
Born June 27, 1903, in Ocean, she was the daughter of the late William and Idella (Broadwater) Mansfield. She also was preceded in death by her husband, J. Edward Merbaugh; one son, Charles W. Merbaugh; one grandson; one brother; one sister; and two half brothers.
Mrs. Merbaugh was a member of St. Joseph's Catholic Church, Midland, and the Sodality. She was a homemaker.
Surviving are two daughters, Beatrice C. Phillips, Frostburg, and Gertrude M. Elliott and husband Don, Bedford, Pa.; one sister, Mary L. Cesnick, Woodland; one brother, Patrick Mansfield, Baltimore; nine grandchildren; 18 great-grandchildren; and six great-great-grandchildren.
Friends will be received at the Durst Funeral Home, 57 Frost Ave., Frostburg, on Monday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m.
EDNA METCALFE
LAVALE - Edna (Crabtree) Metcalfe, 85, of Akron, Ohio, died Feb. 26, 1998, in hospice in Akron.
Edna was born Jan. 2, 1913, in Corriganville, Md. She was the daughter of the late Thomas Alvie and Mary (Getson) Crabtree. She was preceded in death by two husbands, Floyd Wiltrout, and Ross Metcalfe; also, five brothers; and one sister.
She is survived by her two sisters, Marie Stevens, Baltimore, and Madeline Beal, Florida.
At Edna's request she was cremated.
A grave site service was held on Saturday, March 14, at the Restlawn Memorial Gardens, LaVale, with the Rev. Steve Craft officiating.
GEORGE E. METZ
BARTON- George Edward Metz, 60, of 24112 Kyle Road, Barton, died Monday, Dec. 21, 1998, at Memorial Hospital, Cumberland.
Born Feb. 21, 1938, he was the son of the late Charles and Cora M. (Swick) Metz. He was also preceded in death by his first wife, Clara (Gowans) Metz.
Mr. Metz was a retired construction worker with Local #616, with 35 years of service. He was an avid hunter and fisherman.
Surviving him are his wife, Ruth (Raynor) Metz; two stepsons, John Fazenbaker and wife, Regina, Mark Fazenbaker and wife, Margaret, all of Clear Spring; two stepdaughters, Debra White and husband, Ron, Glen Burnie, Fran Jacob and husband, Randy, Midland; two brothers, Charles W. Metz and wife, Jean, Glenn R. Metz and wife, Ellen, all of Barton; two sisters, Jennie M. Trenum and husband, Duane, and Mary E. Griffith, all of Barton.
The family will receive friends at the Boal Memorial Chapel, Barton, on Wednesday, Dec. 23, from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m.
Funeral services will be conducted there on Thursday at 1 p.m. by the Rev. Steffan Carr.
Serving as pallbearers will be Russ Moon, Jim Spiker, Dale Miller, John Murphy, Dick Dayton and Joe Thompson II.
Interment will be in Laurel Hill cemetery, Moscow Mills.
