ROSE E. "BETTY" MULLAN
CUMBERLAND - Rose E. "Betty" Mullan, 74, of Pulaski Street, Cumberland, died Monday, Dec. 7, 1998, at Memorial Hospital.
Born May 3, 1924, in Cumberland, she was the daughter of the late Roy and Nellie (Dean) Drumm. She also was preceded in death by her husband, Francis E. "Moon" Mullan.

Mrs. Mullan was a 1942 graduate of Catholic Girls Central High School. She retired in 1989 from the Allegany County Board of Education, where she had been a teacher's aide at Pennsylvania Avenue Elementary School and South Penn Elementary School. She was a member of St. Patrick's Catholic Church and the City Recreation Bridge Club.

Mrs. Mullan was a kind, generous and devoted mother, sister, grandmother and friend. She will be sadly missed by her loving children, Patricia E. Sansom and husband, Ben, Michael F. Mullan Sr., and Debby M. Simmons and husband Brett, all of Cumberland, Robert F. Mullan and wife, Debbie, Tipton, Pa.; two sisters, Elaine Palmer, Cumberland, Roberta McGeady, Carpendale, W.Va.; five grandchildren, Michael F. Mullan Jr. and wife, Heather, Diane M. Sansom, Christopher Sansom, all of Cumberland, Nickolas J. Mullan, Daniel P. Mullan, Tipton; two great-grandchildren, Austin M. Mullan and Shyra E. Mullan, both of Cumberland.

Friends will be received at the Scarpelli Funeral Home, P.A., 108 Virginia Ave., on Wednesday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. A Christian Wake service will be conducted at the funeral home on Wednesday at 9 p.m.

Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at St. Patrick's Catholic Church on Thursday at 9 a.m. with Fr. Thomas R. Bevan as celebrant.

Interment will be in Sunset Memorial Park.

ANN A. MULLANEY
CUMBERLAND - Ann A. Conroy Mullaney, 84, of Cumberland died March 4 at Sacred Heart Hospital after a long illness.
Born June 2, 1913, in Barton, Maryland, she was the daughter of the late Patrick E. Conroy and Annie Fannon Conroy.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Matthew J. "Jerry" Mullaney, a local attorney, in 1987.

Also preceding her in death were two sisters and two brothers: Ellen Dawson, Margaret Conroy, Edward Conroy and Timothy Conroy, all of Barton.

Mrs. Mullaney was a member of SS. Peter & Paul Catholic Church, Christian Mothers, and the Third Order of St. Francis. She enjoyed a beautiful and fulfilling life caring for her family.

Surviving are one sister, Mary Alma Dudley, LaVale, and five sons: Matthew J. Mullaney and wife Jackie, McMinnville, Oregon; Henry Mullaney and wife Jane, Berea, Ohio; Edward P. Mullaney, Cumberland; Michael J. Mullaney and wife Pattie, LaVale; Timothy J. Mullaney and fiancee Kim Kirby, Cumberland. Also surviving are nine grandchildren: Steven Mullaney, U.S. Air Force - Korea; Anne Marie Martin, Boise, Idaho; John Mullaney, U.S. Navy - Snow Hill, Maryland; Matthew Mullaney, Seattle, Washington; Tim Mullaney, Greenville, South Carolina; Chris Mullaney, U.S. Air Force - Italy; and Caitlin, Brennan and Conor Mullaney, LaVale. Also surviving are four great-grandchildren: Adria, Kyre, John, and Kathleen Mullaney, as well as a number of nieces and nephews.

Friends will be received at the Upchurch Funeral Home, P.A., corner of Greene Street and Smallwood Street in Cumberland, on Thursday from 7:00 to 9:00 PM, and Friday from 2:00 to 4:00 PM and 7:00 to 9:00 PM. Praying of the Holy Rosary will be Friday at 8:45 p.m.

Mass of the Christian Burial will be celebrated on Saturday, March 7th, at 11:00 AM at SS. Peter & Paul Catholic Church with Father Vance Pastorius, O.F.M., Cap., as celebrant. Interment will follow in the SS. Peter & Paul Parish cemetery.

Pallbearers will be: Edward Conroy, William Dudley, Martin Mullaney, Thomas Mullaney, Robert Schellhaus and Eugene Turano.

Memorial donations may be made to SS. Peter and Paul 150th Anniversary Restoration Fund, 125 Fayette St., Cumberland, MD 21502.

GENEVIEVE MURPHY
CUMBERLAND - Genevieve Murphy, 85, of Cumberland, died Saturday, May 30, 1998, at the Cumberland Nursing Home.
Born Nov. 23, 1912, in West Virginia, she was the daughter of the late Joseph S. and Anna B. (White) Johnson. She also was preceded in death by two husbands, Warden Thorp and J.T. "Ted" Murphy; one grandson, Brian Thorp; five brothers; and two sisters.

Mrs. Murphy was a beautician for Genevieve's Beauty Salon on Virginia Avenue. She attended Pennsylvania Avenue High School, was a graduate of Scotty's Beauty School and was a member of Christ United Methodist Church.

Surviving are two sons, Danford W. Thorp and wife Joy, Cumberland, and Adrian E. Murphy and wife Vivian, Granet Falls, N.C.; one daughter, Katherine A. Frazier and husband Bill, Helena, Mont.; one brother, Kenneth L. Johnson and wife Billie, Alvin, Texas; one sister, Wilda M. Miller and husband Harold, Fairfield, Pa.; one sister-in-law, Violet Johnson, Dayton, Ohio; eight grandchildren, Judy, Michael, Timothy, Aaron, Toby, Suni, Jeremy and Addy; and six great-grandchildren.

Friends will be received at the Scarpelli Funeral Home, P.A., 108 Virginia Ave., Cumberland, on Tuesday from 3 to 5 and 7 to 9 p.m.

Services will be conducted at the funeral home on Wednesday at 11 a.m. with Pastor Joe DiNicola officiating.

Interment will be in Hillcrest Memorial Park.

KENNETH C. MURPHY
CUMBERLAND - Kenneth Criss Murphy, 62, of Arch Street, Cumberland, died Monday, June 22, 1998, at Memorial Hospital.
Born Sept. 12, 1935, in Coffeville, Miss., he was the son of the late Roscoe and Nonnie (Chapman) Murphy. He was preceded in death by two brothers, Johnny Eugene Murphy and Larry Murphy.

Mr. Murphy retired from the federal government as a General Services Administration employee. He was a U.S. Air Force veteran, where he served 11 1/2 years. He was a Baptist by faith; was a member of the Moslah Temple A.A.O.N.M.S., Fort Worth, Texas; a 32nd Degree Mason, Hemphill Heights Lodge #1164, Fort Worth; a member of the Scottish Rite, Cumberland; and former member of Cumberland Moose and Eagles.

Surviving are his wife, Margaret Margie (Cook) Murphy; one son, Kenny Wayne Murphy, and wife, Teresa, Fort Worth; one daughter, Susan Lynn Grier, and husband, John, Fort Worth; one brother, James W. Murphy, Grenada, Miss.; four sisters, Ollie Hitt, and husband, John, Grenada, Mavis Scott, and husband, Retired Lt. Colonel William Scott, Columbus, Ga., Ann Powers, and husband, Tony, Coldwater, Miss., Katie Vela, and husband, Jesse, Forest, La.; one granddaughter, Tracie Grier; a mother-in-law, Margaret O. "Mema" Cook, Cumberland; and a special pet dog, "Pepper."

Friends will be received at the Scarpelli Funeral Home, P.A., 108 Virginia Ave., on Wednesday from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m.

The members of the Potomac Lodge #100 A.F. & A.M., Cumberland, will conduct a memorial service on Wednesday at 7:30 p.m.

A Christian Wake Service will be conducted at the funeral home on Wednesday at 8:45 p.m.

Services will be conducted at the funeral home on Thursday at 10 a.m. with the Rev. Lowell Garland officiating.

Pallbearers will be Leroy Shipley, Jim Mechem, Jim Bible, Tom Cecil, Mike Reid and Jan Bean.

Honorary pallbearers will be Judge Frederick P. Stamp, Eddy Jo Clary, Jimmy Clary, Cliff Radcliff, Jeff Adams, Jeryl Stovall, Rocky Gordon and James Warham.

Interment will be in Sunset Memorial Park.

Military honors will be accorded by the Combined Veterans Honor Guard.

Expressions of sympathy may be made to the Shriners Children's Hospital.

CHARLES R. "CHUCK" MURRAY
NEWBURG, Mo. - Charles R. "Chuck" Murray, 68, died on Veterans' Day, Nov. 11, 1998, at his home near Newburg.
Born in Mount Savage on April 20, 1930, he was the son of the late James and Anna (MacMillan) Murray.

He is survived by his beloved wife of 45 years, the former Louise Harrell; two step-sons, Steve Stevens and wife, Cindy, Newburg, and Phil Stevens, Jensen Beach, Fla.; one step-daughter, Jean Lowery and husband J.T., Richland, Mo.; one brother, Jack Murray, Flintstone; and three sisters, Idella Guadio and husband, Michael, Clearysville, Melissa Zimerla and Mable "Pat" Nicolard and husband, Nick, Akron, Ohio. In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by two brothers, Earl and Jim Murray; and one sister, Dorothy Martin.

Mr. Murray retired from the U.S. Army with the rank of Sergeant Major in 1974 after 27 years of military service. Sergeant major Murray was a combat veteran of both the Korean and Vietnam wars and was awarded the Bronze Star for heroism, the Combat Infantry Badge, and two Purple Hearts along with numerous other awards and decorations. He was a member of the Harry Herron Memorial Chapter 49 of the D.A.V. and V.F.W. Post #4956, both in Crocker, Mo. Memorial service arrangements have not yet been announced; however, in lieu of flowers the family asks that memorial donations be made to the American Cancer Society at 1-800-227-2345.

In his final days he faced the inevitable with the same determination, courage and bravery that was the hallmark of his military career and his life. He will be sadly missed by family and friends.

Lay your rifle down soldier, the battle is done.
