ELZA G. HARDING
CUMBERLAND - Elza G. Harding, 82, of Cumberland, formerly of Silver Spring, died Monday, June 29, 1998, at the Memorial Hospital Hospice Unit.
Born April 16, 1916, in Luray, Va., she was the daughter of the late Jacob Ernest and Susan (Kibler) Foster. She also was preceded in death by her husband, Robert E. Harding. She was the last surviving member of her immediate family.
Mrs. Harding was retired from Bell Atlantic. She attended Trinity Episcopal Church, Washington, D.C.
Surviving are one daughter, Pamela C. Middleton and husband Calvin, Cumberland; one grandson, Jason Middleton, Phoenix, Ariz.; one great-grandson, Damon Jeffrey Middleton, Phoenix; and several nieces and nephews.
Friends will be received at the Collins Funeral Home, Silver Spring, Sunday from 2 to and 7 to 9 p.m. Services will be conducted at the funeral home Sunday at 8 p.m.
Graveside services will be held at the Arlington National cemetery Monday at 10 a.m.
The Scarpelli Funeral Home, P.A., 108 Virginia Ave., Cumberland, is in charge of local arrangements.
ALICE V. HARDMAN
BALTIMORE - Alice "Ouchie" Virginia (Silvious) Hardman, 50, went home to be with the Lord on May 1, 1998, at her home in Baltimore.
Born April 18, 1948, in Cumberland, she was the daughter of the late Randolph E. and Clara C. (Gordon) Silvious.
Alice was a dedicated Christian and a member of Crusaders for Christ Church, Edgemere, where she was a Sunday School teacher and on the board of directors.
She was the loving wife of Clayton "Sonny" F. Hardman II, and wonderful mother to Clayton F. III and wife Carolyn, Brenda Dorsey and husband Jimmy and Laura Hardman, all living in the Baltimore area.
She was the world's best Mom-Mom to Michael, Alicia, Christina, Joshua, Justin and little baby Hardman who is on the way.
Alice will be dearly missed by her brother Eugene R. Wright Jr. and wife Patty, Ridgeley, W.Va., sister Randi L. Rice and husband Dave, Oldtown, all her aunts, uncles, cousins, nieces and nephews and all her many friends.
We invite you all to join us in remembering Alice in a memorial service to be held at a later date.
BESSIE M. HARE
CUMBERLAND - Bessie Marie Hare, 81, of Cumberland, died Monday, Sept. 7, 1998, at the Devlin Manor Nursing Home.
Born July 18, 1917, in Cumberland, she was the daughter of the late Walter J. and Alice Virginia (Robinette) Trout. She also was preceded in death by her husband, Leroy W. Hare Sr.; two brothers, Virgil Weber and Arthur Trout; and one sister, Jessie Brotemarkle.
Mrs. Hare was a homemaker. She was a member of Emmanuel Bethel United Methodist Church, Women's Society of the church, Daughters of America, YMCA Auxiliary, and V.F.W. Henry Hart Post 1411 Auxiliary.
Surviving are one son, Leroy W. Hare Jr. and wife Phyllis, Largo, Fla.; one daughter, Donna F. Garland and husband Carl, Pasadena; two grandchildren, William W. Hare, Pensacola, Fla., Christine M. Geoghegan and husband Earl, Shermansdale, Pa.; three great-grandchildren, Robert W. Hare, Joshua M. Geoghegan and Kassandra M. Geoghegan; one nephew; and four nieces.
Friends will be received at the Scarpelli Funeral Home, P.A., 108 Virginia Ave., Cumberland, on Wednesday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m.
Services will be conducted at the funeral home on Thursday at 11 a.m. with the Rev. Mildred Martin officiating.
Interment will be in Sunset Memorial Park.
EDITH B. HARE
CUMBERLAND - Edith B. Hare, 85, of Cumberland, died Monday, Dec. 14, 1998, at her home.
Born Dec. 5, 1913, in Ellerslie, she was the daughter of the late Andrew and Nancy (See) Davey. She was also preceded in death by her husband, Bernard G. Hare, in 1978.
Mrs. Hare was retired from the Bobbin Stores at the Celanese Corporation after 36 years of service. She was Protestant by faith, a member and past president of the Ladies Auxiliary V.F.W. Henry Hart Post #1411, a member of the Goodfellowship Club, the Fraternal Order of Eagles, the Women's United Democrat Club, and the Western Maryland Seniors. She was an avid duck-pin bowler in the Cumberland leagues for 44 years.
Surviving are one son, Charles Harclerode and wife, Ruth, Hyndman, Pa.; one daughter, Carole Hall, Hyndman; one stepson, Bernard Hare Jr. and wife, Lenore, Cumberland; one stepdaughter, Joan Ryan and husband, Bill, New Brunswick, N.J.; one brother, John C. Davey and wife, Rosella, Ellerslie; one sister, Sallie Madden, Ellerslie; two grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; four step grandchildren; and a number of step great-grandchildren.
Friends will be received at Scarpelli Funeral Home, P.A., 108 Virginia Ave., Cumberland, on Wednesday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. The V.F.W. Ladies Auxiliary Henry Hart Post #1411, will conduct a memorial service at the funeral home on Wednesday at 7:30 p.m.
Funeral services will be conducted at the funeral home on Thursday at 1 p.m. with the Rev. Rebecca J. Vardiman officiating.
Interment will be in Porter cemetery, Stringtown, Pa.
ROBERT J. HARE SR.
FROSTBURG - Robert John Hare Sr., 67, of 206 West Village Parkway, Frostburg, formerly of Bellvue Street, Cumberland, died Monday, Nov. 23, 1998, in the Hospice Unit of Memorial Hospital.
Born March 14, 1931, in Cumberland, he was the son of the late John Elmer Hare and Alice (Iser) Hare.
Mr. Hare worked for the City of Cumberland in Flood Control for more than 20 years. He served in the U.S. Army during the Korean Conflict.
Surviving are his wife, Elsie (Coyle) Hare; one son, Robert John Hare Jr., Cumberland; two step-sons, George G. Wilson, Baltimore, Thomas R. Wilson, Cumberland; five daughters, Tina Brookman, Rawlings, Linda Hare, Hagerstown, Cindy Howard, Ohio, Robin Mellott, Cumberland, Tonya Brant, Cumberland; one step-daughter, Sandi Smith, Midland; one brother, Gerald Hare; one sister, Bonnie Snyder, Cumberland; 12 grandchildren, including a special granddaughter, Melissa Llewellyn, Lonaconing.
Friends will be received on Tuesday from 3 to 6 p.m. at the Leasure-Stein Funeral Home, 230 Baltimore Ave., Cumberland.
Funeral services will be conducted at the funeral home on Wednesday at 1 p.m. with the Rev. Richard C. Broome Jr. officiating.
Interment will be in the Maryland Veterans' cemetery at Rocky Gap.
CLIFTON H. HARMAN JR.
CUMBERLAND - Clifton Henry Harman Jr., 21, of Cumberland, died Saturday, Nov. 21, 1998, at the Bedford Memorial Hospital, Bedford, Pa.
Born March 22, 1977, in Cumberland, he was the son of Clifton H. Harman Sr. and Janet E. (Andrews) Harman, with whom he resided. He was preceded in death by his grandparents, Frank and Pearl Andrews, Doc Harman, and Chester and Mary King.
Mr. Harman was employed in the construction of modular homes. He was a graduate of Fort Hill High School in 1995 and was a member of St. Mary's Catholic Church.
Surviving in addition to his parents are two sisters, Vickey L. Daley and husband Robert, and Krista A. Harman, all of Hagerstown; two nephews, Michael R. Twigg and Matthew L. Daley; one niece, Ashley N. Twigg; several aunts, uncles and cousins; and very good friends.
Friends will be received at the Scarpelli Funeral Home, P.A., 108 Virginia Ave., Cumberland, on Monday from 3 to 5 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. A Christian Wake service will be conducted at the funeral home on Monday at 3 p.m.
Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at the St. Mary's Catholic Church on Tuesday at 9 a.m. with the Rev. Milton A. Hipsley as celebrant.
Interment will be in the St. Mary's cemetery.
JOHN F. JONES JR.
LONACONING - John F. Jones Jr., 65, died March 22, 1998, of liver disease in the hospice unit of Sacred Heart Hospital. Mr. Jones was a resident of Baltimore but spent a great deal of time in Allegany County at his wife's family home in Lonaconing and chose to live his last months there. Born Feb. 27, 1933, in Wilmington, Del., he was the son of the late Eleanor Quill Jones and the late John F. Jones Sr. He is survived by his wife, Andrea R. Bowden, of Baltimore; a sister, Leslie Breeden and family, Wooster, Ohio; Eastern Shore cousins; and many devoted friends.
Mr. Jones received his elementary education in Delaware, New Jersey and Pennsylvania. He graduated from Sparks High School in Baltimore County in 1949 and attended the University of Maryland College Park and Dickinson College. In 1958 after serving in the United States Army, he earned a bachelor of science degree in history and education from Millersville State College in Millersville, Pa. In 1968 he was awarded a master of liberal arts degree from the Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore. He did additional graduate work, including studies at Cambridge University in England.
In 1958 he began his career in Baltimore City Public Schools teaching history at Baltimore Polytechnic Institute. From 1961-1965 he taught history at Eastern High School, and from 1965-1970 he was a member of the Social Studies Department at Northern High School where he coached award-winning Model Youth City Council teams. Mr. Jones served as Public Information Officer for the school system from 1970-1973, meeting frequently with the press and school and community groups.
John Jones then embarked on a career in the mental health field, serving from 1973-1976 as field director for two national research studies on drug abuse rehabilitation conducted by the Johns Hopkins School of Hygiene and Public Health. From 1976-1978 he worked for the Maryland State Drug Abuse Administration. In 1978, Mr. Jones was promoted to Assistant Commissioner for Mental Health, Department of Addiction Services for the State of Indiana, a position he held until 1981.
He then returned to Maryland and taught history, economics and English at Seton-Keough High School from 1982-1984, history, sociology and English at the Baltimore Actors Theater Conservatory from 1985-1992, and History of Science at Baltimore Polytechnic from 1992-1993. During summers he taught Maryland History at St. Mary's College for the statewide gifted and talented program and taught History and Ethics of Science and coordinated internships for the SANDALS National Science Foundation Young Scholars program at the College of Notre Dame of Maryland. From 1985 until his retirement in 1995 he taught History of Science in the Physics Department at Towson State University.
Extremely well read, Mr. Jones was conversant in topics including history, current events, politics, railroads, architecture, geography, public health, literature and the arts and sciences. A gifted conversationalist, he was noted for his incredible memory and ability to recall facts. He was an avid Orioles baseball fan and enjoyed reading newspapers and books, listening to classical music, relaxing in Western Maryland, and watching the antics of his cats. He loved people and cultivated many and diverse friends.
During his long illness, Mr. Jones was treated at University of Maryland Hospital in Baltimore, Sacred Heart Hospital in Cumberland, and finally through Western Maryland Health System Home Hospice Services. Appreciation is extended to Dr. Thomas Devlin, hospice nurses, caring sitters, and the many concerned friends who visited and called.
Continuing his commitment to education, Mr. Jones has donated his body to the Maryland Anatomy Board for medical studies. His cremains will be interred in Oak Hill cemetery in Lonaconing at a later date through arrangements by the Eichhorn-McKenzie Funeral Home, P.A.
Friends will be received from 2 to 4 p.m. Saturday, March 28, 1998, at home at 83 East Main St., Lonaconing, Md., in Allegany County. A memorial mass will be celebrated Saturday, March 28, 1998, at 6 p.m. at St. Mary of the Annunciation Church in Lonaconing, Md., where Mr. Jones was a member. The Rev. James Hannon will be the celebrant, and Sr. Marietta Culhane, Pastoral Associate, will deliver the homily.
A memorial mass will be celebrated Monday, April 6, 1998, at 5 p.m. at St. Vincent DePaul Church, Front Street, Baltimore, Md. Bishop P. Francis Murphy and the Rev. Richard Lawrence will concelebrate. Friends will be received at the church before mass, and a reception will follow the mass.
