PATRICIA A. GOWANS
LONACONING - Patricia A. (Robertson) Gowans, 70, of 58 Douglas Ave., Lonaconing, died Monday, Nov. 2, 1998, at Sacred Heart Hospital.
Born May 8, 1928, in Baltimore, she was the daughter of Mrs. Althea R. Lashbaugh, Barton.
Mrs. Gowans retired in 1983 from the Celanese Corp. where she had worked for 37 years as a secretary to the personnel director. She also was very involved with the company's employee store, having traveled to New York City as a buyer. She was a 1946 graduate of Barton High School and attended Catherman's Business School.
She is survived by her husband, Harry R. Gowans; her mother, Mrs. Althea R. Lashbaugh, Barton; her sister, Judith Ann Donaldson and husband Tim, Lonaconing; one nephew, Harry C. Donaldson, Lonaconing; one niece, Catherine A. (Donaldson) Riley and husband John M., Cumberland; one great-niece, Annie Donaldson, Friendsville; and three great-nephews, Brady M. Donaldson, Swanton, Jack Henry Riley, Cumberland, and Justin Michael Winner, also of Cumberland, with whom she shared a very special bond.
Friends will be received at the Boal Memorial Chapel, Barton, on Wednesday from 3 to 5 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m.
Services will be conducted at the Boal Chapel on Thursday at 11 a.m. with the Rev. John S. Park officiating.
Interment will be in Laurel Hill cemetery.
Pallbearers will be Harry C. Donaldson, John Ralston, John M. Riley, Don Smith, John Smith and Justin M. Winner.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that expressions of sympathy be made in her name to the Barton United Methodist Church.
MARION K. GROVE
FROSTBURG - Marion K. Grove, 72, of 183 E. Main St., Frostburg, died Saturday, March 7, 1998, at Memorial Hospital.
Born July 23, 1925, in Frostburg, she was the daughter of the late Earl M. and Anna (Powell) Kerr. She also was preceded in death by a brother, Robert P. Kerr; and a nephew, Keith A. Kerr.
Mrs. Grove was a member of the Frostburg United Methodist Church. She was a retired elementary school teacher from Westside Elementary School and formerly taught at Mount Royal Elementary School. She graduated from the Frostburg State Teacher's College, where she also received a master's degree. She was a member of the Alpha Delta Kappa Sorority.
Surviving are three sons, Kevin G. Grove and wife Patricia, Frostburg, Gregory E. Grove, at home, and Shawn A. Grove, Cumberland; and two granddaughters, Jamie Lynn Grove and Breanna Nicole Grove.
Friends will be received at the Durst Funeral Home, 57 Frost Ave., Frostburg, on Monday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m.
Services will be conducted at the funeral home on Tuesday at 11 a.m. with the Rev. George A. Aist officiating.
Interment will be in the Frostburg Memorial Park.
Pallbearers will be William Evans, Mike Sweitzer, Dave Broadwater, Larry Bennett, Dave Pennington and Larry Beal.
EDWARD C. GRABENSTEIN
CUMBERLAND - Edward C. Grabenstein, 87, of Cumberland, died Tuesday, May 26, 1998, in Frostburg Village Nursing Home.
He was born on Nov. 9, 1910, in Cumberland, the son of the late Edward F. and Josephine (McKenzie) Grabenstein. He also was preceded in death by two sons, Earl Grabenstein and John F. Grabenstein.
Mr. Grabenstein was a member of SS. Peter and Paul Catholic Church; a 4th Degree Knights of Columbus Council #5450 Cresaptown and LaVale; Past President of Haystack Sportsman's Club; and he was retired from the Celanese.
He is survived by his wife, Anna V. (Gilford) Grabenstein; two sons, E. Ronald Grabenstein, Cumberland, and Richard Grabenstein, Waldorf; a step-son, Paul E. Green, Cumberland; a daughter, Betty Johnson, Akron, Ohio; 13 grandchildren; and 10 great-grandchildren.
Friends will be received at the Hafer Chapel of the Hills Mortuary, 1302 National Highway, LaVale, on Wednesday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m.
Funeral services will be conducted on Thursday at 10 a.m. in the funeral home chapel with the Rev. Fr. Vance Pastorius officiating.
Interment will follow in SS. Peter and Paul Catholic Church cemetery, Cumberland.
A Wake Service will be conducted by Fr. Vance Pastorius and the Knights of Columbus Council 5450 on Wednesday at 8:45 p.m.
Pallbearers will be members of the Pope John XXIII Council K. of C., Ed Crowe, Tom Gaughan, Lowell Thomas, Wayne Houdersheldt, Frank DelSignore and Bob King.
CHARLENA V. JEWELL
CUMBERLAND - Charlena Virginia Jewell, 81, formerly of 64 Marion St., Cumberland, died Wednesday, Feb. 4, 1998, at the home of her son, Clarence A. Jewell Jr. and wife Carman, Warrenton, Va., where she had been residing.
Born Nov. 14, 1916, in Cumberland, she was the daughter of the late Charles Wilson and the late Maude (Bowman) Wilson. She also was preceded in death by her husband, Clarence A. Jewell, in 1994; and her daughter, Janet Jewell, in 1966.
Mrs. Jewell was a former employee of the Allegany County Board of Education in cafeteria work. She was a member of the Melvin United Methodist Church.
Surviving are a son, Clarence A. Jewell Jr. and wife Carman, Amissville, Va.; a sister, Geraldine Smith, Cumberland; and several grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
Friends will be received at the Merritt-Adams Funeral Home, P.A., 404 Decatur St., Cumberland, on Friday from 7 to 9 p.m.
Services will be conducted on Saturday at 11 a.m. at the Merritt-Adams Funeral Home, P.A., with the Rev. Richard Leslie officiating.
Interment will be in Hillcrest Burial Park.
CARL C. LEHR
CUMBERLAND - Carl Clifton Lehr, 82, formally of the Kensington Algonquin, Cumberland, and residing at the Frostburg Village Nursing Home, died Tuesday, June 16, 1998, at Sacred Heart Hospital.
Born Dec. 21, 1915, in Altoona, Pa., he was the son of the late Clifton Lehr and the late Elsie (Dawson) Lehr. He was the last surviving member of his immediate family.
Mr. Lehr was a retired manager from Montgomery Ward and Co. and was a certified Braille transcriber for the Library of Congress. He was a member of the Cumberland BPOE, Elks Lodge 63. He was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II.
Surviving are his wife, Esther E. (Smith) Lehr, Cumberland; a son, Joseph W. Lehr, Barrington, Ill.; a daughter, Carol Ann Moritz, Tokyo, Japan; four grandchildren; one great-grandchild; and several nieces and nephews.
Friends will be received at the Merritt-Adams Funeral Home, P.A., 404 Decatur St., Cumberland, on Friday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 8 p.m.
A memorial service will be conducted at the funeral home on Friday at 8 p.m. with Father William Moody officiating.
Interment will be in the Maryland State Veterans cemetery at Rocky Gap.
In honor of Mr. Lehr's request, his body was cremated at the Cumberland Crematory, 404 Decatur St., Cumberland.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Frostburg Village Nursing Home.
PHYLLIS R. HOWELL
BARTON - Phyllis Regina Howell, 87, of Walnut Street, Barton, died Wednesday, Aug. 5, 1998, at Potomac Valley Hospital, Keyser, W.Va.
Born Aug. 7, 1910, in Barton, she was the daughter of the late William B. and Sue F. (Pearce) McConnell. She also was preceded in death by her husband, Adolph "Buck" Howell; and a brother, William T. McConnell.
Mrs. Howell was a clerk/stenographer, retired from the Western Maryland Railroad. She was a 1928 graduate of Barton High School and a member of the Barton High Alumni Association. She was a lifetime member of the Barton United Methodist Church, where she served as a communion steward for 38 years. She also was a member of the United Methodist Women and the Friendly Helpers Bible Class; the Calanthe Temple 3 of the Pythian Sisters; and the Barton American Legion 189 Ladies Auxiliary.
Surviving are two sisters, Dora E. Davis, Frostburg, and Frances Ann Elliott, Barton; and many nieces and nephews.
Friends will be received at the Boal Memorial Chapel, Barton, on Thursday, Aug. 6, from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m.
Funeral services will be conducted at the Barton United Methodist Church on Friday, Aug. 7, at 1 p.m. by the Rev. John Park.
Interment will be in the Laurel Hill cemetery, Moscow Mills.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to the American Heart Association or the Barton United Methodist Church.
