LORETTA L. CATHELL
CUMBERLAND - Loretta Lena (Hartung) Cathell, 92, of Cumberland, died Tuesday, March 10, 1998, at the Egle Nursing Home.
Born Dec. 28, 1905, in Cumberland, she was the daughter of the late John Henry and Harriett Etta (Middleton) Hartung. She also was preceded in death by her husband, Lee Stewart Cathell, in 1989; and two brothers, Carl and Bill Hartung.

Survivors include one son, Charles W. Hevel and wife Linda, Rawlings; one daughter, Marilyn Joyce Bischof and husband John, Arnold, Pa.; seven grandchildren; and one great-grandson.

Friends will be received at the Upchurch Funeral Home, P.A., corner of Greene and Smallwood streets, Cumberland, on Thursday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m.

The funeral service will be held on Friday, March 13, 1998, at 11 a.m. in the funeral home with the Rev. John J. Duffus officiating.

Interment will be in Sunset Memorial Park.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Cresaptown Ambulance Fund, Warrior Drive, Cresaptown, MD 21502.

ALMA J. DYER
CUMBERLAND - Alma J. Dyer, 78, of Cumberland, died Friday, March 20, 1998, at Memorial Hospital, Cumberland.
Born Feb. 24, 1920, in Connelsville, Pa., she was the daughter of the late Elmer L. and Johanna (Hyde) Weimer. She also was preceded in death by her husband, Charles L. Dyer, in 1983; two brothers, Charles E. Weimer, Claude Weimer; three sisters, Gladys (Mock) Jacobs, Mable Barkheart, Wanda Fuller; one grandchild, Howard Bender Jr.; and one great-great-grandchild, Skye N. Cartwright.

Mrs. Dyer was a homemaker and Pentecostal by faith.

Surviving are one son, Edward C. Dyer and wife, Rita, Hampton, Va.; three daughters, Johanna Brown and husband, Paul, Oldtown, Gladys Bane, Charlotte Lee Shook and husband, Neil, all of Cumberland; one brother, Paul Weimer and wife, Vera, Virginia Beach, Va.; one sister, Rhea Lepley and husband, the Rev. Lester Lepley, Cumberland; 16 grandchildren; 39 great-grandchildren; three great-great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

Friends will be received at the Scarpelli Funeral Home, P.A., 108 Virginia Ave., on Sunday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m.

Services will be conducted at the funeral home on Monday at 11 a.m. with the Rev. Rodney Casteel Sr. officiating. Interment will be in Hillcrest Memorial Park.

CLARA E. BENNETT
ECKHART - Clara E. Bennett, 76, of 16808 Turks Lane, SW, died Saturday, Feb. 7, 1998, at her residence.
Born July 20, 1921, in Frostburg, she was the daughter of the late Charles W. and Lula (Lancaster) Boettner. She also was preceded in death by a sister, Ruth Crowe; and a nephew, Ralph Lee Dyer Jr.

Mrs. Bennett was a life-long member of the Eckhart Methodist Church, where she formerly taught Bible and Sunday school, and was still active in the choir. She was a retired elementary school teacher from Mount Savage School, and she was a member of the Retired Teachers Association.

Surviving are her husband of 35 years, John J. Bennett; one brother, John L. Boettner Sr. and wife Grace, Winchester, Va.; one sister, Mary Louise Dyer and husband Ralph, Middletown; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Friends will be received at the Durst Funeral Home, 57 Frost Ave., Frostburg, on Sunday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m.

Services will be conducted at the funeral home on Monday at 2:30 p.m. with the Rev. George M. Harpold officiating.

Interment will be in the Eckhart cemetery.

CLIFFORD C. BENNETT
MOUNT SAVAGE - Clifford Calvin Bennett, 82, of Mount Savage, formerly of J.F.K. Apartments, Cumberland, died Friday, Oct. 2, 1998, at the home of his daughter.
Born May 14, 1916, in Artemas, Pa., he was the son of the late William Roy and Ethel Pearl (Potts) Bennett. He was preceded in death by his daughter, Pearl Lee Bennett.

Mr. Bennett was a retired custodian from St. Luke's Lutheran Church and a former employee of the Celanese Corporation, Cumberland.

He was a member of the Living Stone Church of the Brethren.

Surviving are his wife, Catherine Anna Bennett, Allegany County Nursing Home; one daughter, Sue Carol Bittner and husband, Robert, with whom he resided; two sons, Clifford Lee Bennett and wife, Karen, Gilbert Calvin Bennett and wife, Barbara, all of Cresaptown; one sister, Hilda Olive Hovermill, Cumberland; six grandchildren, Dianna Sue Yates, Cumberland, Debra Kay Robison and husband, Keith, Mount Savage, Philip Lee Bennett and Teresa, Petersburg, W.Va., Kara Renee Bennett, Jason Michael Bennett, Katie Ann Bennett, all of Cresaptown; seven great-grandchildren, Andrew Yates, Derrick Yates, Dillon Yates, Samantha Valiton, Candice Robison, Austin Bennett and Matthew Alexander.

Friends will be received at the Scarpelli Funeral Home, P.A., 108 Virginia Ave., on Saturday from 7 to 9 p.m. and Sunday from 3 to 5 and 7 to 9 p.m.

Services will be conducted at the Living Stone Church of the Brethren on Monday at noon with the Rev. Timothy L. Monn officiating. Friends will be received at the church one hour prior to the service.

Interment will be in St. Luke's cemetery.

Pallbearers will be Philip Bennett, Jason Bennett, grandsons, and George Morgan and Jeremy Kennell.

CORNELIUS "CONNIE" A. DYE
CUMBERLAND - Cornelius "Connie" A. Dye, 80, of Cumberland, died Friday, March 20, 1998, in an auto accident on Interstate 68.
Born Oct. 8, 1917, in Barton, he was the son of the late William Edward Dye and the late Ruth (Symons) Dye. He also was preceded in death by Cecil Dye.

Mr. Dye was a retired manager of the Seven-Up Bottling Co. for 38 years, and co-owner of Boulevard Liquor Store for 14 years. He was a life-member of Fort Cumberland Post 13 American Legion; life member of Henry Hart Post 1411 VFW; life-member of Fraternal Order of Eagles Aerie 245; life-member of the Goodfellow Club; member of Loyal Order of Moose Lodge 271; and life-member of the El-Fidel. He was a veteran of the U.S. Navy Seabees of World War II, and commander of the local chapter of the Navy Seabees Island X-3.

Surviving are his wife, Ruth (Hammersmith) Dye, Cumberland; a daughter, Sharon Lindeman and husband Nelson, Cumberland; two nephews who were reared by Mr. and Mrs. Dye, Thomas C. Meister and wife Patti, Nobelville, Ind., and L. Michael Meister and wife Beth, Columbia, Md.; a sister, Norma Jean Metz and husband Luther, Barton; and five grandchildren.

Friends will be received at the Merritt-Adams Funeral Home, P.A., 404 Decatur St., Cumberland, on Monday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m.

Services will be conducted at the funeral home on Tuesday at 11 a.m.

Interment will be in the Maryland State Veterans cemetery at Rocky Gap.

Military honors will be accorded by the Combined Veterans Honor Guard.

ELEANOR N. BENNETT
MIDLAND - Eleanor Naomi (VanHorn) Bennett, 58, of 19300 Buskirk Hollow Road, Midland, died Monday, Feb. 9, 1998, at home after a long illness. Her family was with her.
Born May 12, 1939, in Cumberland, she was a daughter of the late Richard and Glen (Miller) VanHorn.

Eleanor was an avid antique collector, and she enjoyed working in civic activities. She was chairwoman of Lonaconing's 1976 Bi-Centennial Celebration. She was a graduate of Fort Hill High School class of 1957.

Surviving are her husband of 35 years, Billy Bennett. She was the mother of Luray Greenwell and husband, John, Frederick; Richard Bennett and wife, Pam, Lonaconing; Marty Bennett and wife, Debbie, Lonaconing; and Linda Wolf and husband Ray, Fairbault, Minn. Also surviving are 10 grandchildren, Patrick, Nicholas and Elizabeth Greenwell, R.J. and Miranda Bennett, Tyler and Elliott Bennett, Ray, Megan and Lucas Wolf.

Friends will be received at the Eichhorn-McKenzie Funeral Home, P.A., Lonaconing, on Wednesday, Feb. 11, 1998, from 5 to 7 p.m. with a special memorial prayer service at 7 p.m. with a special nephew, the Rev. Steve Courtney, and a special friend, the Rev. Fred Iser, officiating.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations in memory of Eleanor be made to Home Hospice of Memorial, Western Maryland Health Systems, Cumberland, Md.

At Mrs. Bennett's request, her body was donated to the State Anatomy Board of Maryland.
