RALPH P. BENDER SR.
FROSTBURG - Ralph Pengelly Bender Sr., 87, of 5 Standish St., Frostburg, died Thursday, Aug. 20, 1998, at Sacred Heart Hospital.
Born April 28, 1910, in Eckhart, he was the son of the late Albert and Katherine (Pengelly) Bender. He also was preceded in death by one brother, Lester Bender.
Mr. Bender worked in banking in Frostburg from 1929 to 1975. He was a member and past president of The Bankers Association.
Surviving are his wife, Edith (Dilley) Bender, a resident of St. Vincent de Paul Nursing Home; one son, Ralph P. Bender Jr., at home; three daughters, Frances Celine Kropff and husband Ernie, Silver Spring, Catherine B. Abbott and husband Allan R., Taneytown, and Martha J. Lashbaugh and husband William, Eckhart; eight grandchildren, John, Michael and Liana Kropff, Juliana Abbott Gehr, Alana Abbott Smith, Mary Edith Abbott Blubaugh, Ellen Kitzmiller and William Lashbaugh III; four great-grandchildren, Dylan Smith, Madison Gehr, Brant T. Kitzmiller and Macy Lashbaugh; and one sister, Madeline Thomas and husband William, Frostburg.
Friends will be received at the Sowers Funeral Home, P.A., 60 W. Main St., Frostburg, on Friday from 7 to 9 p.m.
Services will be conducted at the funeral home on Saturday at 1 p.m. with Father William E. Moody officiating.
Interment will be in St. Michael's cemetery.
BEVERLY J. BENNETT
BELTSVILLE - On Saturday, July 25, 1998, Beverly Joyce Bennett of Beltsville died.
Born Jan. 29, 1933, in Green Spring, W.Va., she was raised in Cumberland.
She was a graduate of Fort Hill High School (1951), Frostburg State University (1955), and the University of Maryland (1975). She was the daughter of the late Fred R. and Pansy S. (Field) Bennett. After an initial career as a teacher, she was subsequently employed by the Episcopal Church Home, Interface Video, Siemens Corporation, and Commerce Bank.
Survivors include her sons, L. Seth Statler, of College Park, and D. Ben Statler, of Annapolis; and her brother, Fred R. Bennett Jr., Littleton, Colo.
A memorial service will be held at Emmanuel United Methodist Church, Beltsville, at 11 a.m. on Friday, July 31.

JOHN J. BENNETT
FROSTBURG - John Joseph Bennett, 74, of 16808 Turks Lane, S.W., died Thursday, Dec. 3, 1998, at Sacred Heart Hospital.
Born March 31, 1924, in Kempton, he was the son of the late George E. and Lillian (Lancaster) Bennett. He also was preceded in death by his wife, Clara E. Bennett, on Feb. 7, 1998; four brothers; and two sisters.
Mr. Bennett was retired from Messman Buick where he worked in the parts department. He was a member of the Eckhart Methodist Church.
Surviving are two sisters, Martha Miller, Eckhart, and Mary Fraley, Frostburg; four brothers, Dick Bennett, Oakland, Bobby Bennett, Albuquerque, N.M., Jimmy Bennett, Frostburg, and Bill Bennett, Shaft; and numerous nieces and nephews.
Friends will be received at the Durst Funeral Home, 57 Frost Ave., Frostburg, on Monday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m.
Funeral and committal services will be conducted at the funeral home on Tuesday at 1 p.m. with the Rev. George Harpold officiating.
There will be no graveside services. Interment will be in the Eckhart cemetery.
LOMAN E. BENNETT
LAVALE - Loman Everett Bennett, 89, of LaVale, formerly of Industrial Boulevard, Cumberland, died Monday, Nov. 23, 1998, at Sacred Heart Hospital.
Born Sept. 27, 1909, in Junior, W.Va., he was the son of the late Ora Bruce Bennett and Gertrude (Heffer) Bennett Bibey. He also was preceded in death by his wife, Evelyn Leona (Twigg) Bennett.
Mr. Bennett was a former employee of Frantz Grocery and A&P; Stores, Cumberland, Home Beneficial Life Insurance, and he retired from People's Life Insurance Company. He was a U.S. Navy veteran of World War II, a member of St. John's Lutheran Church, and the Ridgeley V.F.W.
Surviving are one son, John Bruce Bennett and wife, Jennifer, LaVale; one brother, Willard "Bill" Bennett, Essex; two sisters, Edriess Wright, Roanoke, Va., and Dorothy Bean, Wiley Ford, W.Va.
Friends will be received at Scarpelli Funeral Home, P.A., 108 Virginia Ave., on Friday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. There will be no visitation on Thursday.
Funeral services will be conducted at the funeral home on Saturday at 11 a.m. with Fr. Vance Pastorius, O.F.M., Cap, officiating.
Interment will be in Greenmount cemetery, Cumberland.
FRANCES W. "CHAPPY" CHAPMAN
CUMBERLAND - Francis Warren "Chappy" Chapman, 77, of Cumberland, died Thursday, March 19, 1998, at the Lions Manor Nursing Home, Cumberland.
Born Jan. 5, 1921, in Midlothian, he was the son of the late John A. and Catherine E. (Trapp) Chapman. He also was preceded in death by his wife, Mildred E. (Shroyer) Chapman, on March 3, 1991; three brothers, John A. Chapman, William Chapman and George Chapman; and six sisters, Florence Morrissey, Margaret Fisher, Josephine Yarnall, Elizabeth Miller, Leola Miller and Bernadett Chorpenning.
Mr. Chapman was a manager for the curing department at Kelly-Springfield Tire Co., and a U.S. Marines veteran of World War II. He was a graduate of LaSalle High School in 1939, and attended Notre Dame University. He was a graduate of St. Francis College in 1949.
He was a member of St. Patrick's Catholic Church. He was an honorary life member of Knights of Columbus 586; life member of DAV Fort Washington Post 2; and the American Legion Fort Cumberland Post 13.
Mr. Chapman was the last surviving member of his immediate family.
Surviving are one son, John Edward Chapman and wife Melanie, Cumberland; two daughters, Patricia Ann Boyce and husband Victor, Tyler, Texas, and Donna Marie Kennedy and husband David, Cresaptown; four grandchildren, Lauren M. Boyce, Evan T. Boyce, Danielle R. Kennedy and Caeden Scott Chapman; one sister-in-law, Pauline Chapman, Cumberland; and several nieces and nephews.
Friends will be received at the Scarpelli Funeral Home, P.A., 108 Virginia Ave., Cumberland, on Sunday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m.
A Christian Wake service will be held at the funeral home on Sunday at 8 p.m. with the Knights of Columbus participating.
Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at St. Patrick's Catholic Church on Monday at 10 a.m. with the Rev. Thomas R. Bevan as celebrant.
Interment will be in the Maryland State Veterans cemetery at Rocky Gap. Military honors will be accorded by the Combined Veterans Color Guard.
C. ZENA BENNETT
CUMBERLAND - C. Zena Bennett, 63, of Cumberland, died at her home on Monday, Oct. 26, 1998.
Born Feb. 21, 1935, in Bedford Valley, Pa., she was the daughter of the late Henry Lloyd Zembower and Gladys Elizabeth (Cross) Zembower. She was also preceded in death by a son, Mitchell L. Bennett, on Feb. 8, 1984.
Mrs. Bennett was a devoted homemaker and was a member of Centerville United Methodist Church.
She is survived by her husband, Virgil R. Bennett; and two sons, David A. Bennett and wife, Alena, Richmond, Va., and Rodger B. Bennett and wife, Trish, Murrieta, Calif.; one sister, Mrs. Doris Dreyer, Greencastle, Pa.; and one brother, Carl Zembower and wife, Donna, Mechanicsburg, Pa.; and four grandchildren, Jason Bennett, April Bennett, Brittany Bennett and Ryan Bennett.
Friends will be received at the Merritt-Adams Funeral Home, P.A., 404 Decatur St., Cumberland, on Wednesday 2 to 4 and 7 to 9.
A service will be conducted at the funeral home on Thursday at 9:30 a.m. with the Rev. Sherrill Dillon, officiating.
Interment will be in Sunset Memorial Park.
