ALICE I. BEATTY
CRESAPTOWN - Alice I. Beatty, beloved mother and grandmother, died Thursday, Sept. 17, 1998, in Sacred Heart Hospital, Cumberland, after a long illness.
Born Jan 14, 1920, in Dunbar, Pa., she was the daughter of the late John Henry Garfield and Lula Alice (Shanholtzer) Beatty.
She was preceded in death by three sisters, Naomi Hoffman, Alma Lee Beatty and Golda Beatty; and two brothers, Guy Beatty and Garland Glen Beatty.
Surviving are her daughter, Susan Grafton Knisley, Cresaptown; two granddaughters, Allison Danielle Knisley and Susan Mariah Knisley, both of Cumberland; a brother Bernard V. Beatty, Fort Ashby, W.Va.; a sister, Gladys Shanholtz, Romney, W.Va.; a niece, Connie V. Shanholtz, Romney; and a nephew, George B. Shanholtz, of Virginia.
Friends will be received at the Hafer Chapel of the Hills Mortuary, 1302 National Hwy., LaVale, on Saturday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m.
Funeral services will be conducted on Sunday at 4 p.m. in the funeral home chapel with the Rev. Bill Boyer officiating. Music will be provided by the Cumberland Ward Choir, Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints.
Entombment will be held in Rest Lawn Memorial Park Mausoleum, LaVale.
Pallbearers will be Butch Haggard, Jim McKenzie, Howard Stitcher, Mike Wade, Jim Pennington and Ron Gulbronson.
ANNA VIRGINIA BECKMAN
MOUNTAIN LAKE PARK - Anna Virginia Beckman, age 86, of 410 N Street, Mountain Lake Park, died on Sunday at her home.
She was born in Oakland, July 3, 1912, and was a daughter of the late Noah C. Slabaugh and Phoebe (Sanders)C. In addition to her parents she was preceded in death by her husband, Elwood Beckman, in 1994.
She is survived by one brother, Lee Slabaugh, Chester, W.Va.; and numerous nieces and nephews.
Friends may call at the Durst Funeral Home, Oakland, on Wednesday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m.
Services will be conducted at the funeral home on Thursday at 10 a.m. with the Rev. Mark Hickman officiating.
Interment will be in the Gortner cemetery.
HAGAR E. BECKMAN
SWANTON - Hagar Elizabeth Beckman, 52, of Swanton, died Tuesday, June 30, 1998, at Sacred Heart Hospital.
Born April 3, 1946, in Swanton, she was the daughter of the late Leo and Hagar (Weicht) Tichinel.
Among the survivors are two sons, Johnny George, Grantsville, and James Moon, Bethleham, Md.; two brothers, Leo Tichinel and George Tichinel, both of Swanton; two sisters, Margaret Moon, Bethleham, and Karen Gilner, Oakland; three half sisters, Elaine Lake, Virginia, Mary Duckworth and Vida Cooper, both of Swanton; and one grandchild.
Friends will be received at the David A. Burdock Funeral Home, Kitzmiller, on Thursday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m.
Services will be conducted Friday at 1 p.m. in the Walnut Bottom Assembly of God Church by the Rev. Christopher Crawford. Interment will be at the Turner Cemtery, Walnut Bottom.
RACHEL LAURA BECKMAN
DEER PARK - Rachel L. Beckman, age 87, of Deer Park, formerly of Pleasant Valley, died Tuesday, March 24, 1998, at Garrett County Memorial Hospital in Oakland.
She was born Nov. 27, 1910, in Kitzmiller, and was a daughter of the late Charles C. Schmidt and Lucinda (Beeman) Schmidt. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Walter N. Beckman; four sons; and one daughter.
She is survived by five sons, William E. Beckman, Coraopolis, Pa., George L. Beckman, Oakland, Ralph D. Beckman, Cincinnati, Ohio, Claude F. Beckman, Mountain Lake Park, and Walter N. Beckman, Camarilla, Calif.; four daughters, Ruth A. St. Clair, Baltimore, Helen L. Gay, Deer Park, Margaret J. Mowbray, Alexandria, Va., and Elva J. Cole, Cincinnati; 50 grandchildren; 135 great-grandchildren; and 35 great-great-grandchildren.
Friends may call at Durst Funeral Home, Oakland, on Wednesday from 7 to 9 p.m. and on Thursday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m.
Services will be conducted at the Faith Evangelical Free Church on Friday at 11 a.m. with the Rev. Ivan Ackerman officiating.
Interment will be in the Pleasant Valley cemetery.
Friends may call at the church one-half hour prior to services.
The family suggests that memorials be directed to Hospice of Garrett County or to the church of the donor's choice.
WILLIS E. BECKMAN
CUMBERLAND - Willis Ellsworth Beckman, 74, of 13806 Oleander Drive, Cumberland, formerly of McCoole, died Sunday, March 22, 1998, at the Frostburg Village Nursing Home.
Born Jan. 15, 1924, in Mountain Lake Park, he was the son of the late Courtney and Stella (Gower) Beckman. He also was preceded in death by his first wife, Margot V. Bryan; and two brothers.
Mr. Beckman was retired from the Sheet Metal Workers Local of Keyser, W.Va. A U.S. Army veteran of World War II, he was a member of the First Christian Church, Friendsville, and the McCoole Fire Department.
Surviving are his wife, Anna Mae (Baker) Beckman; two stepsons, James Roberts and wife Elizabeth "Betty," Somerville, W.Va., and Galen Beitzel and wife Dorothy, Grantsville; one stepdaughter, Sandra Kay Durst and husband John, Frostburg; one brother, Frank Beckman, Des Moines, Iowa; one sister, Mabel Ternet, Lonaconing; 10 step-grandchildren; and one step-great-granddaughter.
Friends will be received at the Durst Funeral Home, P.A., 57 Frost Ave., Frostburg, on Monday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m.
Services will be conducted at 11:30 a.m. Tuesday at the funeral home with Evangelist Galen Beitzel officiating.
Interment will be in the Philos cemetery, Westernport.
ELVA H. BENDER
BITTINGER - Elva H. Bender, 86, of 11077 Bittinger Road, Bittinger, died Tuesday, Feb. 10, 1998, at Memorial Hospital, Cumberland.
Born Jan. 26, 1912, in Garrett County, she was the daughter of the late Harvey and Anna (Miller) Yoder. She also was preceded in death by her husband, Harvey C. Bender, on March 31, 1991; two sons, Marvin and Garland; four brothers, Floyd, Alvin, Claude and Olen Yoder; and four sisters, Beulah Bender, Alta Miller, Edna Yoder and Verda Beitzel. Five additional brothers and sisters died in infancy.
Mrs. Bender was a member of Dry Run Mennonite Church and spent three years in the voluntary service at the Rosedale Bible Institute, Irwin, Ohio. She devoted part of her life to teaching summer Bible School programs in various states. She also served for many years as president/vice president of the ladies sewing circle of her church. A homemaker, Mrs. Bender also was noted for her baking skills.
She is survived by two sons, Sanford Bender and Lowell Bender; and one daughter, Idella Bender, all of Bittinger; three sisters, Thelma Beitzel, Viola Yoder and Glenola Miller, all of Grantsville; seven grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.
Friends will be received at the Newman Funeral Home, Grantsville, on Thursday from 7 to 9 p.m. and Friday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Services will be conducted on Saturday at 10:30 a.m. at the Cherry Glade Mennonite Church with the Rev. Philip Moser and the Rev. Leonard Orendorf officiating. The body will be taken to the church one our prior to services. Interment will be in the Dry Run cemetery with the Rev. Keith Yoder officiating at graveside.
Expressions of sympathy may be directed to Dry Run Expansion Fund or to Christian Aid Ministries.
MARGARET L. BENDER
CUMBERLAND - Margaret Lee Bender, 79, of 1302 Michigan Ave., Cumberland, died Wednesday, April 22, 1998, at Memorial Hospital.
Born Oct. 14, 1918, in Cumberland, she was the daughter of the late Lloyd Bittinger and the late Carrie (Minear) Bittinger. She also was preceded in death by her husband, Howard Bender; and son, Daniel Bender.
Mrs. Bender was a retired secretary for Memorial Hospital. She was a member of St. Paul's Lutheran Church, the YMCA Auxiliary, and the Salvation Army Women's Auxiliary.
Surviving are two sons, Kenneth Bender and wife Esther, Dayton, Ohio, and Gene Bender and wife Linda, Cumberland; two daughters, Susie Lapp, Cumberland, and Martha Lee Jankey and husband Buck, Cumberland; a daughter-in-law, Susie Bender, Cumberland; a sister, Gladys VanMeter, Cumberland; 10 grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; and four special friends, Scott and Linda Burleson, and Ed and Nina Ayers.
Friends will be received at the Merritt-Adams Funeral Home, P.A., 404 Decatur St., Cumberland, on Friday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m.
Services will be conducted at the funeral home on Saturday at 11 a.m. with the Rev. Wayne R. Turner officiating.
Interment will be in Sunset Memorial Park.
The family requests that memorials be made to the Memorial Hospital Hospice Unit.
