EUGENE F. ABE SR.
FLINTSTONE - Eugene Franklin Abe Sr., 85, of Flintstone, died Wednesday, May 6, 1998, at Sacred Heart Hospital.
Born July 13, 1912, he was the son of the late Henry Nicholas Abe and Bertha (Brelsford) Abe.
Mr. Abe had been a laborer at the Celanese Corp. and was a former member of the Laborers International Union of North America. He was a member of the Glendale Church of the Brethren.
Survivors include his wife, Agnes Marie (Hornick) Abe; four sons, Eugene F. Abe Jr., Flintstone, James Dale Abe, Mechanicsburg, Michael W. Abe, Cumberland, and John C. Abe, Flintstone; four daughters, Virginia Leah Lancaster, McCoole, Ruby Mae Cottle, Everett, Pa., Catherine Marie Bradley, Front Royal, Va., and Barbara Jean Jones, Clearville, Pa.; two brothers, Leroy Abe, Ohio, and Robert Abe, Old Furnace Road; two sisters, Dorothy Abe, Ohio, and Grace Moreland, Old Furnace Road; 13 grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren. Friends will be received at the Upchurch Funeral Home, P.A., 202 Greene St., Cumberland, on Friday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m.
The funeral service will be held at the Glendale Church of the Brethren on Saturday at 2 p.m. with the Rev. Richard Ketterman officiating.
The body will be taken to the church one hour prior to the service.
Interment will be in the Glendale cemetery.
Memorial contributions may be made to the charity of one's choice.
CLARENCE B. DAVIS JR.
CUMBERLAND - Mr. Clarence Bernard Davis Jr., 74, of 11705 Bobo St., N.E., Cumberland, passed away Friday, May 29, 1998, at Allegany County Nursing Home.
Born in Cumberland on Jan. 7, 1924, he was the son of the late Clarence Bernard Davis Sr., and Ida (Saxton) Davis. He also was preceded in death by a sister, Mary E. Wratchford.
Mr. Davis was a retired employee of Andy's Tire Service, Cumberland, and he was a veteran of the U.S. Army in World War II.
He is survived by two nieces, Judith Ann Wilson, and husband, Bernard, Valley Road, Cumberland, and Betty McCoy, and husband, John, Salida, Calif.; nephew, Ralph Wratchford, and wife, Marilyn, Cumberland; great-nieces, Tammy Muir, Diana Kinser, Lonnie Gray, and husband, Robert, Jody M. Mooney, and husband, Kelly.
Friends will be received at the Merritt-Adams Funeral Home, P.A., 404 Decatur St., Cumberland, on Sunday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m.
Funeral services will be held at the funeral home on Monday at 11 a.m. by the Rev. Richard Jewell.
Burial will be in the Rocky Gap Veterans cemetery.
Full military rites will be held at graveside by the Combined Local Veterans Organizations.
DOROTHY M. DICKEL
POCOMOKE CITY - Dorothy M. Dickel, 80, of Pocomoke City, formerly of Mount Savage, died Wednesday, April 22, 1998, at Peninsula Regional Medical Center, Salisbury.
Born Aug. 21, 1917, in Pocomoke City, she was the daughter of the late Brinkman and Leona Mae (Pruitt) Payne. She also was preceded in death by her husband, Ralph E. "Rats" Dickel, in April 1996.
Mrs. Dickel attended Mount Savage Methodist Church.
Surviving are one daughter, Drena M. Jenkins, Laurel; four sisters, Beatrice Akerly, Rehobeth Beach, Del., Eunice Watson, Pocomoke City, Rose Marie Wainwright, Berlin, Md., and Nina Silverthorne, Pocomoke City; three brothers, Leon Payne, Pocomoke City, Vernon Payne and Vaughan Payne, both of Fruitland; three grandchildren, Keith Jenkins, Brooklyn Park, Jeffrey Jenkins and Jay Jenkins, both of Laurel; and two great-grandchildren.
Friends will be received at the Hafer Chapel of the Hills Mortuary, 1302 National Highway, LaVale, on Sunday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m.
Funeral services will be held in the funeral home chapel on Monday at 10 a.m. with the Rev. Richard Broome officiating.
Interment will follow in Restlawn Memorial Gardens.
WILMA E. BRADFIELD
LAVALE - Wilma E. Bradfield, 76, of LaVale, died Friday, April 10, 1998, at Memorial Hospital.
Born on April 23, 1921, at Rockwood, Pa., she was the daughter of the late G. Robert Goodwin Sr. and Grace E. (Shaffer) Goodwin. Her husband, Donald L. Bradfield I, died on Nov. 30, 1992. She also was preceded in death by one brother, G. Robert Goodwin Jr.
Mrs. Bradfield was a graduate of Memorial Hospital School of Nursing, Class of 1943. A Registered Nurse, she worked at both Memorial and Sacred Heart Hospitals. She retired as a Registered Nurse from the Allegany County Nursing Home in 1984 with 41 years of service to the nursing profession. She was a member of the Centre Street United Methodist Church, the Sarah Circle of the United Methodist Women, the Weldemerns Bible Class, and was a Past Matron of McKinley Chapter # 12 Order of the Eastern Star.
She is survived by two sons, Donald L. Bradfield II and wife, Candith, Baltimore, and John R. Bradfield and wife, Caryl, Germantown; one daughter, Donna F. Willison and husband, Tom, Cumberland; four grandchildren Abigail J. Bradfield, Seth M. Bradfield, both of Baltimore, Adam H. Bradfield and Joshua M. Bradfield, both of Germantown.
Friends will be received at the Kight Funeral Home, 309-311 Decatur St., Cumberland, on Monday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m.
Funeral services will be held at the funeral home on Tuesday at 11 a.m. with the Rev. Lloyd B. McCanna and the Rev. Adam E. Grim officiating.
Interment will be at Hyndman cemetery, Hyndman, Pa.
Pallbearers will be from the Centre Street United Methodist Men's Club.
The family has requested that contributions take the form of donations to the Centre Street United Methodist Church Memorial Fund.
McKinley Chapter #12 Order of the Eastern Star will hold memorial services at the funeral home on Monday at 7:30 p.m.
ELMER L. DICKEL
MOUNT SAVAGE - Elmer Leroy Dickel, 70, of Mount Savage, died Saturday, April 4, 1998, at Memorial Hospital.
Born Aug. 4, 1929, in Mount Savage, he was the son of the late Phillip and Edna (Dillon) Dickel.
Mr. Dickel retired after 20 years of service with the Mount Savage Refractories. He served in the National Guard and was a member of the Barrelville Outdoors Club.
He was the last surviving member of his immediate family but is survived by numerous cousins.
Graveside services will be conducted at St. Patrick's cemetery, Mount Savage, on Wednesday, June 24, at 6 p.m.
FRANCES L. COMP
DEER PARK - Frances Loretta Comp, age 86, of Deer Park, died Saturday, May 23, 1998, at Dennett Road Manor Nursing Home, Oakland.
She was born Nov. 12, 1911, in Deer Park, and was a daughter of the late John Robert Letrobe Thrasher and Grace (Marley) Thrasher. In addition to her parents she was preceded in death by one brother, Lambert L. Thrasher.
She graduated from Frostburg State University, formerly Frostburg State Teachers College, in its last two-year class, then attended the University of Maryland and Western Maryland College. She retired after a 35-year teaching career, having taught at Boiling Spring, Lynndale, Oak Grove, Wilson, Swanton, Deer Park, and ending her career at Second Term School, Swanton.
She was a charter member of the Ladies Auxiliary to the Deer Park Community Volunteer Fire Department where she served many years as secretary. She was a past president of the Allegany-Garrett Firemen's Association, and held several appointed offices with the Maryland State Firemen's Association. She also was a charter member of the Loar Auxiliary of Garrett County Memorial Hospital; and was a past secretary and worked for many years in the Auxiliary's Gift Shop at Garrett Memorial Hospital. She was a member of the Deer Park United Methodist Church since 1924, making her the oldest church member. She also served as Superintendent there for 33 years and taught Sunday School for many years. She was a member of the Pythian Sisters and a 50-year member of Chapter #67 Order of the Eastern Star. She also was a life member of the Garrett County Historical Society.
Surviving are her husband, whom she married
in 1936, George F. Comp Jr.; two brothers, Harrison M. Thrasher, and his wife, Betty, and Carl W. Thrasher, and his wife, Helena, all of Deer Park; one sister, Mrs. Margaret Thrasher Reeder, Annandale, Va.; and one sister-in-law, Pleasant Thrasher, also of Deer Park.
Friends may call at the Durst Funeral Home in Oakland on Monday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m.
Services will be conducted at the funeral home on Tuesday at 11 a.m. with the Rev. Neil Parsons officiating.
Interment will be in the Deer Park cemetery.
Members of the Deer Park Community Volunteer Fire Department will serve as pallbearers.
The family suggests that memorials take the form of contributions to the Deer Park Community Volunteer Fire Department or to the Southern Rescue Squad.
