Joseph C. Kalinowski, 86, WWII veteran

SOUTHBRIDGE -- Joseph C. Kalinowski, 86, of Southbridge, formerly of 959 Main St., died Thursday, Jan. 31, in the Soldiers Home after an illness.
He leaves a sister, Anne Swierzbin of Beverly Hills, Fla.; nephews and nieces. He was born in Southbridge, son of Stanley and Julia K. (Kaczmarcek) Kalinowski, and lived most of his life in Southbridge before moving to the Soldiers Home 28 years ago. He was an Army veteran of World War II, serving in the Battle of the Bulge. He was awarded the Purple Heart.
Mr. Kalinowski worked many years at American Optical Co., retiring many years ago.
The graveside service will be held at 10 a.m. Wednesday, Feb. 6, in Oak Ridge Cemetery. A memorial Mass will be held at a later date in St. Hedwig's Church, Everett Street. There are no calling hours. Daniel T. Morrill Funeral Home, 130 Hamilton St., is directing arrangements.

MILFORD -- Josephine M. (Grillo) Kearnan, 93, of 77 School St., died Thursday, Jan. 31, in Milford-Whitinsville Regional Hospital.
Her husband, William H. Kearnan Sr., died in 1974. She leaves two sons, William H. Kearnan Jr. of Medway and James R. Kearnan of Mendon; two daughters, Irene L. Ferrante and Carol A. Brillhart, both of Milford; two sisters, Angie Gheringhelli and Carmella Dupont, both of Milford; eight grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren. She was born in Lawrence, daughter of Joseph and Giovanna (Tartucci) Grillo, and lived many years in Milford. She was educated in Milford schools.
Mrs. Kearnan was a shoe worker at Milford Shoe Co. She was a member of Foresters of America and St. Mary's of the Assumption Church.
The funeral will be held at 9 a.m. Tuesday, Feb. 5, from Consigli-Ruggerio Funeral Home, 46 Water St., with a Mass at 10 a.m. in St. Mary's of the Assumption Church, Winter Street. Burial will be in St. Mary's Cemetery. Calling hours are 4 to 8 p.m. Monday, Feb. 4, in the funeral home.

SOUTHBRIDGE -- Annette B. (Girard) Lamothe, 83, of 53 Pleasant St., died Tuesday, Feb. 5, at home after an illness.
Her husband, Charles D. Lamonthe, died in 1984. She leaves two sons, Charles A. Lamothe of Laconia, N.H., and Marc H. Lamothe of Southbridge; three daughters, Jacqueline Smith. of Sturbridge, Vivian Smick of Southbridge, and Jeanne Kahikina of Southbridge; 17 grandchildren; 19 great-grandchildren. Two sisters, Rita DeRouin and Stella Boiteau, both of Southbridge. She was born in Southbridge, daughter of Armand and Exelia (Girouard) Girard.
Mrs. Lamothe worked for American Optical Company for 28 years, retiring in 1980. She was a life member of Notre Dame Church. She enjoyed traveling and was a former member of the Royal Travelers Club, American Optical Quarter Century Club, Cercle Social and Casaubon Senior Center.
The funeral will be held Friday, Feb. 8, from Sansoucy Funeral Home, 40 Marcy St., with a Mass at 10 a.m in Notre Dame Church, 446 Main St. Burial will be in Oakridge Cemetery. Calling hours are 6 to 9 p.m Thursday, Feb. 7, in the funeral home. STERLING -- James R. Leslie, 52, formerly of Sterling, died Saturday, Feb. 2, in HealthAlliance Leominster Hospital after an illness.
He leaves his mother, Jane W. (Whitcomb) Leslie of Sterling; a sister, Diane Leslie of Sterling; nephews and nieces. He was born in Holden, son of James F. Leslie, and was raised in West Boylston, and lived many years in Sterling.
A private graveside service will be held in Mount Vernon, West Boylston, in the spring. There are no calling hours. Memorial contributions may be made to American Heart Association, Mass. SHREWSBURY -- Betty Jane (Ryder) Mancini, 82, of 36 North Quinsigamond Ave., died Tuesday, Jan. 29, in the Hermitage Nursing Home, Worcester, after an illness.
Her husband, Anthony Mancini, predeceased her. She leaves a daughter-in-law, Donna Mancini of Worcester.
Mrs. Mancini was a leather cutter for Patton Shoe Company in Worcester and Burgess Leather in North Grafton, before retiring. She was a member of Saint Anne's Church and its Golden Age Club, Shrewsbury Senior Citizens and the Shrewsbury Tower Social Club all of Shrewsbury.
A graveside funeral service will be held at 1 p.m. Monday, Feb. 4, in Mountain View Cemetery, Shrewsbury. There are no calling hours. Britton-Shrewsbury Funeral Home, 648 Main St., is directing arrangements.

FITCHBURG -- Roxane (Davis) Mazzilli, 50, of 75 Thorndike St., died Friday, Jan. 25, in St. Vincent Hospital at Worcester Medical Center.
She leaves her husband of 31 years, Carl Mazzilli of Fitchburg; a son, Anthony Mazzilli of Northfield, Vt.; a daughter, Yvette Mazzilli of Fitchburg; her father and stepmother, Walter and Charlotte Davis of Henderson, Nev.; three brothers, Walter E. Davis II of Harvard, Jonathan Davis of Melrose, and Patrick Davis of Cape Cod; and two sisters, Yvette Ryan of Richfield, Minn. and Elaine Lamb of Merrimack, N.H. She was born in Jamaica Plain, daughter of Yvette (Soucy) Davis, and came to Fitchburg 31 years ago. She graduated from Lincoln-Sudbury High School.
Mrs. Mazzilli was a member of St. Anthony Di Padua Church.

FITCHBURG -- Mary M. (Leavitt) O'Brien, 81, formerly of 22 Norcross Terrace, died Monday, Jan. 28, in the Hillcrest Nursing Center after a long illness.
Her husband of 42 years, David W. O'Brien Sr., died in 1992. She leaves two sons, David W. O'Brien Jr. of Fitchburg and John P. O'Brien of Jaffrey, N.H.; a daughter, Patricia A. Joubert of Fitchburg; two brothers, David B. Leavitt of West Chester, Pa. and Philip M. Leavitt of Oak Ridge, N.J.; a sister, Barbara J. Leavitt of Fitchburg; a grandson and three granddaughters. A sister, Rita F. Porter of Farmington, Conn., died in 1998. A grandson, Ryan C. Joubert of Fitchburg died in 2000. She was born in Fitchburg, daughter of Michael J. and Margaret A. (Nestor) Leavitt. She was a 1937 graduate of St. Bernard's Central Catholic High School, and a 1941 graduate of St, Vincent School of Nursing. She graduated from St. Vincent's School of Nursing in Worcester and attended Boston College.
Mrs. O'Brien worked as a registered nursing supervisor at Leominster Hospital and St. Vincent's Hospital in Worcester before doing industrial nursing at the former Crocker Burbank/Weyerhauser Paper Company and at the former General Electric Company, retiring in 1982, after many years. She was a member of St. Bernard's Parish and the Daughters of Isabella.
The funeral will be held Thursday, Jan. 31, from the Smith-Mallahy-Masciarelli Funeral Home, 243 Water St., with a Mass at 11 a.m. in St. Bernard's Church, 240 Water St. Burial will be in St. Bernard's Cemetery. HARDWICK -- Elaine J. "Cindy" (Allen) Patch, 61, of 365 Fisk Road, died Thursday, Jan. 31, at home after a long illness.
She leaves her husband of 41 years, Richard A. Patch; three sons, Alan and Stephen Patch, both of Hardwick, and James Patch of Barre; two daughters, Sherry Patch of Hardwick and Joyce Lam of Ware; 12 grandchildren. She was born in Glover, Vt., daughter of Neil and Aris (Powers) Allen, and lived 10 years in Barre and 20 years in the Gilbertville-Hardwick area. She graduated from Peacham Academy in Peacham, Vt.
Mrs. Patch was a nurse's aide at Hilltop Rest Home in Gilbertville for 20 years. She also worked at Rutland Heights Hospital, and gave foster care for children and the elderly for many years.
The funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Monday, Feb. 4, in Trinitarian Congregational Church, Main Street, Gilbertville. Burial will be in Aspen Grove Cemetery, Ware. Calling hours are 1 to 3 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 3, in Cebula Funeral Home, 66 South St., Ware.

WORCESTER -- Marguerite T. (Collins) Purcell, 80, of Atkinson, N.H., formerly of Worcester, died Friday, Feb. 1, in Greenbriar Nursing Home in Nashua, N.H., after an illness.
Her husband, Jeremiah T. Purcell, died in 1968. She leaves two sons, Jerald T. Purcell of Worcester and David M. Purcell of Atkinson; a daughter, Maureen Michaud of Amherst, N.H.; eight grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; nephews and nieces. A daughter, Patricia A. Stolberg of Worcester, died last year. A brother, John F. Collins of Worcester, died in 1979. A sister, Frances V. McCullum of Hollywood, Fla., died in 1977. She was born in Worcester, daughter of Joseph and Margaret (Leonard) Collins, and lived here most of her life before moving to Atkinson in 1996.
Mrs. Purcell was a member of St. Paul's Cathedral.
The funeral will be held Tuesday, Feb. 5, from Fay Brothers Funeral Home, 9 Hammond St., with a Mass at 10 a.m. in St. Paul's Cathedral, 15 Chatham St. Burial will be in St. John's Cemetery. Henry C. Borger Jr., 90, academician, war veteran

SWAMPSCOTT -- Henry C. Borger Jr., 90, of Swampscott, formerly of Worcester and Holden, a retired college president, dean of students and professor, died Tuesday, Jan. 22, en route from Danvers Nursing Home to Beverly Hospital, of complications from Alzheimer's disease.
His wife was the late Marian F. (Flege) Borger. He leaves a son, Fredrick A. Borger of Royersford, Pa.; twin daughters, Betty A. Johnson of Omaha, Neb., and Margaret A. King of Malden; five grandsons; and a great-granddaughter. He was born in Brooklyn, N.Y., son of Henry C. Borger Sr. and Margaret (Rose) Borger, and was raised in Westwood, N.J. He lived in Holden and Worcester before moving to Swampscott. He was educated in Westwood public schools and at the Peddie School in Hightstown, N.J. He received a bachelor's degree from Princeton University, and a master's degree and a doctorate in education, both from the Teachers' College of Columbia University, New York City. He retired to Naples, Fla., in 1976 and was a longtime summer resident of Rutland. He maintained a winter home in Naples.
He was an Army veteran of World War II, and was awarded the Bronze Star. He then served in the Army Reserves, attaining the rank of colonel.
Mr. Borger taught at Freehold (N.Y.) Military School, Peekskill (N.Y.) Military Academy, and Birch Wathen School in New York City. At Clark University in Worcester, he was an assistant professor of education, an associate professor of education, dean of men, and then dean of students and professor of education. He then was president of Leicester Junior College, serving from 1965 until retiring in 1975. He later was an interpreter at Old Sturbridge Village in Sturbridge.
Mr. Borger was a member of the Citizens' Plan E Association of Worcester, Worcester School Committee, Kiwanis Club, Worcester Dance Assembly, Holden Players Club and Central Congregational Church, Worcester. He was affiliated with several professional organizations, including the National Education Association and the National Council for the Social Studies. He was also a member of the Foreign Policy Association, the American Historical Association, and the New England History Teachers Association.
A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 23, in United Congregational Church, 6 Institute Road, Worcester. There are no local calling hours. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Old Sturbridge Village, Sturbridge, MA 01556; or to the Alzheimer's Association, 36 Cameron Ave., Cambridge, MA 02140.

GARDNER -- Shirley M. (Erickson) Boucher, 74, of 444 Park St., died Monday, Feb. 4, in Heywood Hospital after an illness.
She leaves her husband of 53 years, Roger G. Boucher; a son, John A. Boucher of Gardner; two daughters, Andrea J. Mitchell of Brattleboro, Vt., and Bonnie J. St. John of Ashburnham; three sisters, Janet Leger and Linda Laroche, both of Gardner, and Corinne "Jackie" Gariepy of Green Bay, Wis.; five grandchildren; a great-grandson; nephews and nieces. A sister, June Hermanson of Gardner, died in 1992. She was born in Gardner, daughter of Andrew and Louratta (Richards) Erickson, and graduated from Gardner High School in 1945.
Mrs. Boucher was a member of Sacred Heart of Jesus Church. She enjoyed reading and cooking.
The funeral will be held Thursday, Feb. 7, from Boucher Funeral Home Inc., 110 Nichols St., with a Mass at 11 a.m. in Sacred Heart of Jesus Church, 166 Cross St. Burial will be in Calvary Cemetery, Winchendon.
