Eva Young, 86

Hyannis - Eva Young, 86, died Tuesday, July 21, 1998 at The Greenery Rehabilitation and Skilled Nursing Center at Hyannis after a long illness.

She was the wife of the late Paul Young, Jr.

Born and raised in Hayes, La., she moved to Boston in1942. During the war, she worked making parachutes at the Naval Shipyard in Boston.

Mrs. Young was a faithful member of the Ebenezer Baptist Church in Roxbury, where she was a choir member and missionary for many years: She was active in outreach work with Save the Children and the World Vision Foundations among others.

She moved to Hyannis in 1975 and later became a member of the Zion Union Church.

Surviving are two daughters, Vivian Tavares and Georgia M. Bey, both of Hyannis; 24 grandchildren; many great-grandchildren; and a great-great-grandchild.

She was also the mother of the late Calvin Young, Robert Young and Thelma Richards.

A funeral service was held at the Doane, Beal & Ames Funeral Home, Hyannis.

Burial was in Mosswood Cemetery, Cotuit.

Arvid R. Anderson, 81

Hyannisport - Arvid Ruben Anderson, 81, died Wednesday, July 29, 1998 at his home in Hyannisport.

He was the husband of Evelyn (Meserve) Anderson and the late Marie (Brandt) Anderson.

Born in Brockton, he moved to the Cape as a child and lived most of his life in Hyannis and Hyannisport. He graduated from George Washington University in 1938 with a degree in political science. He received a master's degree in education from Bridgewater State College in 1968.

A World War II veteran, he served for four years as a Navy officer aboard several destroyers, one of which was sunk by a torpedo.

After the war, he worked for the Army Corps of Engineers and managed lumber mills, John Hinkley's Lumber Mill in Hyannis and another in Virginia. He also built houses as an independent contractor for 15 years.

What he considered his real career was teaching, which he began during the 1950s. He taught at the Massachusetts Maritime Academy and at public and private high schools throughout the Cape. He was best known as a professor of mathematics, physics and construction technology at Cape Cod Community College, where over a period of 25 years he inspired many of his construction students to become independent contractors.

Locally, from 1961 to 1978, he was the proprietor of the Sea Freeze ice cream store, where he also inspired many high school students to find careers.

Mr. Anderson was a 55-year member of the Federated Church of Hyannis, where he served on the Addition Building Committee and Finance Committee. He was also church auditor.

Besides his wife, he is survived by five children, Allen A. Andersson of Bethesda, Md., Barbara E. Andersson of Newton, Brandt Andersson of Lafayette, Calif., Lyssa M. Andersson of Salem and Laurel E. Andersson of Auburndale; two stepchildren, Linda Lord of Bellingham and Jennifer O'Connell of Cornelius, N.C.; two brothers, Albert Anderson and Robert Anderson, both of Hyannisport; two sisters, Maye Brogan and Ruth Berry, both of Hyannisport; and 11 grandchildren.

A memorial service was held at the Federated Church in Hyannis.

Burial was in Pass Christian, Miss.

Phyllis C. Bagley, 76

Osterville - Phyllis Claire Bagley, 76, died Saturday, July 25, 1998 at Cape Cod Hospital in Hyannis.

She was the wife of David C. Bagley.

Born and educated in Middleboro, she graduated from Trinity College in Washington, D.C., where she was a math major.

A summer resident of Osterville since she was a teenager, she moved there permanently a year ago from West Hartford, Conn.

She was a communicant of Our Lady of the Assumption Church and a member of the American Association of University Women.

Surviving besides her husband are a son, David Stegmair Bagley of Framingham; a daughter, Irene E. Bagley of Osterville; a brother, Theodore Stegmaier of Framingham and Falmouth; a grandson; an aunt; two nieces and many cousins. A funeral Mass was celebrated at Our Lady of the Assumption Church, Osterville.

Memorial donations may be made to the Osterville Free Library, Wianno Avenue, Osterville, MA 02655.

Robert J. Burns, 85

Centerville - Robert J. Burns, 85, a retired MBTA driving instructor, died Wednesday, July 29, 1998 at his home.

He was the husband of Noreen (Nestor) Burns.

Born in Cambridge, he was educated in Cambridge schools and attended Northeastern University.

Mr. Burns lived in Arlington and Plymouth before moving to Centerville in 1986. He worked as a driving instructor for MBTA in Boston for many years until his retirement in 1974.

He was a communicant of Our Lady of Victory Church in Centerville and a member of the Carmen's Union.

Surviving besides his wife are a son, Edward P. Burns of Milford; a daughter, Sheila F. Burns of West Barnstable; a sister, Mabel Sheasby of West Barnstable; five grandchildren, and two great-grandchildren.

He was also the father of the late Robert N. Burns.

A funeral Mass was celebrated at Our Lady of Victory Church, Centerville. Burial was in Manomet Cemetery, Plymouth.

Charles R. Carlisle, 69

Barnstable - Charles R. Carlisle, 69, who had a career in business and international affairs, died Sunday, July 26, 1998 at his home after a long illness.

He was the husband of Nadeane (Howard) Carlisle.

Born in Catonsville, Md., he was raised in Cincinnati and lived in Colombia, Australia. Washington, D.C., and Europe. Prior to moving to Barnstable two years ago, he also lived in Geneva, Switzerland, and Greenfield, N.H.

He received a bachelor's degree from the University of Cincinnati and a master's degree in public administration from Harvard University.

Mr. Carlisle had more than 35 years of experience in international affairs and business. He was deputy director-general of the General Agreement on Tariffs and Trade in Geneva, Switzerland, from 1987 until June 1993. Immediately before Joining GATT, he was ambassador and chief textile negotiator in the office of the U.S. Trade Representative. He was also a former career foreign service officer, serving both in Washington, D.C., and at posts abroad; vice-president of St. Joe Minerals Corp., a major natural resources company, for nine years; and president of the American Fiber Manufacturers Association.

Mr. Carlisle traveled extensively and dealt with top officials and business leaders from around the world.

His lifelong interest was trout fishing, which he pursued in the United States, Europe and South America. He loved to travel, especially in Europe, and was a voracious reader of current affairs and World War I and II.

Surviving besides his wife are a son, John H. Carlisle, 2nd mate merchant marine; a daughter, Leslie Anne Nichols of Gainesville, Texas; a brother, William Lee Carlisle of Cincinnati; and two grandchildren.

A memorial service was held at the Hallett Funeral Home, South Yarmouth.

James W. Carrol Jr., 73

Franklin - James W. Carroll Jr., 73, who leaves a son in West Barnstable, died Monday, July 27, 1998 at Falmouth Hospital shortly after being stricken ill. He was the husband of Anna F. (Bertoni) Carroll for 50 years. Born in Norwood, he lived in Canton for more than 20 years before moving to Franklin 50 years ago. Mr. Carroll served in the Navy during World War II and upon his discharge worked for the Veterans Administration for several years. He was also a letter carrier for the U.S. Postal Service in Franklin. For more than 16 years, he taught at the Oak Street Elementary School in Franklin. He retired several years ago. A longtime communicant of St. Mary's Church, he was a life member of the American Legion Post No. 75 and a member of the Massachusetts Chapter of Disabled American Veterans, American Association of Retired Persons and Franklin Senior Citizens.

He was also a former member of the Massachusetts Teachers Association and the National Education Association.

Surviving besides his wife are two sons, James E. Carroll Of Mansfield and Joseph P. Carroll of West Barnstable; a daughter, Joan M. Napoli of Uxbridge; a sister, Margaret Loecher of Kingston; and seven grandchildren.

A funeral with military honors was held at the Charles F. Otefi Franklin Funeral Home, Franklin, with a concelebrated funeral Mass in St. Mavis Church. Burial followed in the parish cemetery.

Edith Edmunds, 95

Middlebury, Vt. - Edith Edmunds, 95, died Wednesday, July 29, 1998 at the Helen Porter Nursing Home in Middlebury.

She was the wife of the late Everett L. Edmunds.

Mrs. Edmunds was born in Newton, Mass, and was a resident of Middlebury and Centerville, Mass.

She is survived by several nieces and nephews, including Virginia Ferris of Ferrisburgh and Judith Batcheider of Woodville, N.H.

Services will be private at the convenience of the family.

Eileen R. Harkins, 95

Centerville - Eileen R. Harkins, 95, a retired teacher, died Thursday, July 30, 1998 at Park Avenue Nursing Home in Arlington.

She was the wife of the late Albert G. Harkins.

Mrs. Harkins was a graduate of Westfield Normal School and Columbia Teachers College. Her teaching career, spanning more than 40 years, included special needs classes in the Somerville school system and primary classes in the Palmer, Westfield and New Britain, Conn., school systems.

After her retirement in 1970, Mrs. Harkins moved to Centerville, where she was active in the Cape Cod Hospital Guild and Thrift Shop, Our Lady of Victory Guild, the Centerville Library Bridge Club and the American Association of University Women.

She was an avid reader and was skilled in needlework, gardening and furniture restoration.

Mrs. Harkins is survived by one son, Daniel Harkins of Cambridge; two daughters, Margaret Mary Soltis of New Orleans and Catherine Harkins of Randolph; and six grandchildren.

A funeral Mass was celebrated in St. Paul Church, Cambridge.
