AUBURN -- Arthur E. Love, 64, of 2 Kimball Road, a longtime fireman and retail clerk, died Tuesday, Dec. 11, in the Hospice Residence, Worcester, after an illness.

He leaves his wife, Patricia L. (Dufresne) Love; a son, Andrew Love of Worcester; a daughter, Felicia Baril of Newport, Maine; a stepson, Mark Dufresne of Millbury; a stepdaughter, Christina Steele of Billerica; his mother, Blanche (Barber) Love of Auburn; two grandchildren; four step-grandchildren; nieces and nephews. A brother, Byron H. Love Jr., predeceased him. He was born in Worcester, son of Byron H. Love Sr., and was raised and educated in Auburn. He served in the Navy.

Mr. Love was a fireman at South High School in Worcester. He also worked 18 years for Sears, Roebuck and Co. He was a member of First Assembly of God Church in Worcester and its choir. He was a member of Worcester Entertainment Club, Worcester Light Opera, and the Mendelssohn Group.

The funeral will be held Friday, Dec. 14, from Britton-Wallace Funeral Home, 91 Central St., with a service at 10 a.m. Friday, Dec. 14, in First Assembly of God Church, 30 Tyler Prentice Road, Worcester. Burial will be in Worcester County Memorial Park, Paxton. Calling hours are 5 to 8 p.m. Thursday, Dec. 13, in the funeral home. Memorial donations may be made to the Hospice Residence, 10 Judith Road, Worcester, MA 01608.

Catherine A. McCarthy

SHREWSBURY -- Catherine A. (Sullivan) McCarthy, 88, of 26 Fox Hill Road, formerly of 8 Westmont Road and 25 Abington St., both in Worcester, a longtime Girl Scout volunteer, died Friday, Dec. 7, at home.

Her husband, Francis J. McCarthy, died in 1996. She leaves two daughters, Kathleen F. McCarthy of Shrewsbury and Jane F. Smith of Palos Verdes Estates, Calif.; two brothers, John D. Sullivan of Englewood, Fla. and George E. Sullivan of Auburn; a sister, Mary E. Tinsley of Worcester; seven grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. A sister, Anna G. Charland, and a grandson, Sean F. Smith, predeceased her. She was born in Worcester, daughter of Daniel G. and Nannette (Cronin) Sullivan, and lived many years in Worcester before moving to Shrewsbury.

Mrs. McCarthy was a longtime Girl Scout leader and a member of St. Mary's Church. She was a former member of Our Lady of the Angels Church, Worcester, and its Mother's Club.

A funeral will be held Monday, Dec. 10, from O'Connor Brothers Funeral Home, 592 Park Ave., Worcester, with a Mass at 10 a.m. in St. Mary's Church, 640 Main St. Burial will be in St. John's Cemetery, Worcester. Calling hours are from 4 to 7 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 9, in the funeral home. Memorial contributions may be made to the Visiting Nurses Association, 120 Thomas St., Worcester, MA 01608, or to the Alzheimer's Association.

Dennis M. Murphy, 47
Wednesday, December 12, 2001

WINCHENDON -- Dennis M. Murphy, 47, of Fitzwilliam, N.H., formerly of Winchendon, a retired computer programmer, died Monday, Dec. 10, in his brother's home.

He leaves a brother, Kevin J. Murphy of Winchendon; a stepbrother, Robert E. Murphy of Fitzwilliam; and several aunts, uncles, nieces and nephews. A brother, Brent J. Murphy, and a sister, Veronica A. Belden, predeceased him. He was born in Winchendon, son of Robert E. and Irene P. (Sevigny) Murphy, and lived here many years here until moving to Fitzwilliam four years ago. He graduated from Murdock High School in 1972 and attended Keene State College.

Mr. Murphy worked 25 years as a computer programmer for General Electric Co. before retiring. He was a communicant of Immaculate Heart of Mary Church.

A funeral Mass will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, Dec. 15, in Immaculate Heart of Mary Church, 52 Spruce St. Burial is private. There are no calling hours. Snow-Ladeau Funeral Home is directing arrangements.

Peter W. Perreault, 62
Sunday, December 09, 2001

LARGO, Fla. -- Peter W. Perreault, 62, of Largo, formerly of Worcester and Shrewsbury, a former professional football player, died Saturday, Dec. 8, in Graceville after a long illness.

He leaves a daughter, Rachel Sprague of Dothan, Ala.; a sister, Marianne Raczkowski of South Laguna, Calif.; a granddaughter; and two nephews. He was born in Shrewsbury, son of Mr. and Mrs. Paul R. Perreault. He graduated from Chesire Academy in 1958. He served in the Marine Corps.

Mr. Perreault played offensive guard for 10 seasons in the National Football League, including seven with the New York Jets. He also played for the Pittsburgh Steelers, the Cincinnati Bengals and the Minnesota Vikings before a knee injury ended his career. After retiring from football, he founded the Tampa Bay Chapter of the NFL Alumni Association, where he served as the organization's first president.

Funeral services will be held at a later date. Byrd Funeral Home, 3409 West Main St., Dothan, Ala., is directing arrangements.

A. Barbara Rogers, 87
Wednesday, December 12, 2001

PAXTON -- A. Barbara (Goodness) Rogers, 87, of Burtenmar Circle, died Monday, Dec. 10, in St. Vincent Hospital at Worcester Medical Center.

Her husband, Kenneth E. Rogers, died in 1991. She leaves a son, Kenneth E. Rogers Jr. of Maryland; a daughter, Barbara A. Stietzel of Sturbridge; two grandchildren, Gregory S. Rogers of Maryland and Kathy L. Siegel of California; and a great-granddaughter. She lived all her life in the Worcester area. She graduated from Worcester State Teachers College.

Mrs. Rogers was a homemaker. She was a member of the Paxton Senior Center.

A memorial service will be held in January. There are no calling hours. Memorial donations may be made to Friends of the Council on Aging, 17 West St., Paxton, MA 01612.

Paul F. Shusas, 87
Tuesday, December 11, 2001

WORCESTER -- Paul F. Shusas, 87, of 161 West Mountain St., a retired florist, died Monday, Dec. 10, in UMass Memorial Medical Center -- Memorial Campus, after a short illness.

His wife, Jean C. (Wassel) Shusas, died in 1961. He leaves three sons, Paul T. and Gerald M. Shusas, both of Worcester, and Gary A. Shusas of Boston; two sisters, his twin, Ella Pagnielli of Milford, and Adele Carrstedt of Boca Raton, Fla.; seven grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. He was born in Worcester, son of Paul and Victoria Shusas, and lived here all his life. He graduated from Commerce High School in 1934.

Mr. Shusas was a florist for 22 years at Holmes-Shusas Florist. Previously, he worked at Howard Brothers Manufacturing, retiring in 1979. He enjoyed gaming and politics.

A funeral service will be held at noon Wednesday, Dec. 12, in Athy Memorial Home, 111 Lancaster St. Burial will be in Notre Dame Cemetery. A calling hour will from 11 a.m. to noon Wednesday, Dec. 12, in the funeral home.

Arvid O. Silverberg Sr.

WEST BROOKFIELD -- Arvid O. Silverberg Sr., 80, of Ragged Hill Road, a former business owner, died Friday, Dec. 7, at home.

He leaves his wife of 59 years, Mildred L. (Knox) Silverberg; a son, Robert K. Silverberg of Leicester; four daughter, Elsa Bates of East Templeton, Alison Messina of Lexington, Ky., Heidi Jeldres of Gardner and Robin Dawson of Corbin, Ky.; four brothers, Carl. G. and Dr. Joseph E. Silverberg, both of Sturbridge, Axel Silverberg of Podunk and Ernest G. Silverberg of Fairmount, Ga.; 12 grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; and many nieces, nephews and cousins. He was born in Auburn, son of Gabriel and Wendla (Carlson) Silverberg, and grew up in East Brookfield. He lived the past 54 years in West Brookfield. He graduated from Mary E. Wells High School in 1939 and attended Emory University. He was an Army veteran of World War II.

Mr. Silverberg worked 40 years as a tool and die maker at several area companies, retiring in 1986. He also owned and operated Silverberg Precision Engineering Co. in West Brookfield for six years. He was a member of George Whitefield United Methodist Church. He was a Boy Scout leader in Milford and West Brookfield for many years. He was a published author and enjoyed building homes.

A funeral service will be held at 2 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 16, in George Whitefield Methodist Church, West Main Street. Burial will be in Pine Grove Cemetery. There are no calling hours. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the G.W. United Methodist Church, PO Box 576, West Brookfield, MA 01585, or to Harrington Hospital Home Care and Hospice, 61 Pine St., Southbridge, MA )1550. William J. Stisitis, 55
Tuesday, December 11, 2001

AUBURN -- William J. "Spider" Stisitis, 55, of 171 Rochdale St., a mechanic and a veteran of the Vietnam War, died Saturday, Dec. 8, in St. Vincent Hospital at Worcester Medical Center, Worcester, from injuries suffered after he was struck by a car on James Street, Worcester, that day.

He leaves his wife of 33 years, Diane M. (Cooper) Stisitis; two sons, William J. Stisitis Jr. of Oxford and Timothy J. Stisitis of Auburn; a daughter, Karen Audette of Spencer; a sister, Arlene Pellerin of Auburn; four grandchildren; nephews and nieces. He was born in Worcester, son of Vincent and Helen (Grudzinskas) Stisitis, and lived in Auburn for many years. He graduated from Auburn High School in 1966. Mr. Stisitis was an Army veteran of the Vietnam War.

He was a machinery mechanic in the abrasive mill department of Norton Co. for 33 years. He was a member of St. Joseph's Parish, Chester P. Tuttle Post American Legion, the Auburn Lodge of Elks and the Century Sportman's Club. He enjoyed fishing, hunting and camping.

The funeral will be held Wednesday, December 12, from Britton-Wallace Funeral Home, 91 Central St., with a Mass at 10 a.m. in St. Joseph's Church, 189 Oxford St. Burial will follow in Hillside Cemetery. Calling hours are 5 to 8 p.m. Tuesday, Dec. 11, in the funeral home. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Auburn District Nursing Association, 191 Pakachoag St., Auburn, MA 01501; or to the Disabled American Veterans, 180 Greenwood St., Worcester MA 01607.

Harry E. Thibodeau, 85
Wednesday, December 12, 2001

FITCHBURG -- Harry E. "Kaki" Thibodeau, 85, formerly of 276 Lunenburg St., a former boxer, died Tuesday, Dec. 11, in River Terrace Healthcare Center, Lancaster, after an illness.

His wife, Annette E. (Lavoie) Thibodeau, died in 1988. He leaves two sisters, Catherine Bull of New Jersey and Claire White of Fitchburg; nephews and nieces. A brother, Francis Thibodeau of Leominster, died last year. A brother, George Thibodeau, and two sisters, Doris Dors and Evelyn "Fussy" Pietila also predeceased him. He was born in Fitchburg, son of Desire and Jennie (McGrath) Thibodeau. He was a Navy veteran of World War II, serving in the Pacific.

Mr. Thibodeau worked 35 years for area paper companies, including James River, Weyerhauser and Louis Dejonge Paper Co., retiring in 1975.

He was a New England States boxing champion in 1937. He attended St. Joseph Church and was a member of the Fitchburg Chapter of Disabled American Veterans.

The funeral Mass will be at 10:30 a.m. Friday, Dec. 14, in St. Joseph Church, 49 Woodland St. Burial will be in the parish cemetery. A calling hour is 9 to 10 a.m. Friday, Dec. 14, in Louis M. Isabelle Funeral Home, 316 Clarendon St. Memorial donations may be made to St. Joseph's Church, 49 Woodland St., Fitchburg, MA 01420.

Esther J. Vander Pyl, 76
Monday, December 10, 2001

FALMOUTH -- Esther J. (Pickett) Vander Pyl, 76, of 23 little John Road, formerly of Millbury, died Tuesday, Nov. 27, at home after a battle with cancer.

Her husband, Adrian W. Vander Pyl, died in 1995. She leaves a son, Robert Vander Pyl of Falmouth; a daughter, Nancy J. Vander Pyl of Falmouth; a brother, Thomas F. Pickett of Millbury; three sisters, Alice Lucier, Gertrude Lebel and Louise Murphy, all of Millbury; a granddaughter; and many nieces and nephews. A brother, G. Raymond Pickett, and three sisters, Doris Watts, Myrna Stewart and Frances Lucier, predeceased her. She was born in Millbury, daughter of Thomas R. and Emeline (Phinney) Picket, and lived many years there before moving to Rutland. She lived in Denver before moving to Falmouth six years ago. She graduated from Millbury High School.

Mrs. Vander Pyl was a homemaker and enjoyed cooking, dancing and reading mysteries.

A funeral service will be held at noon Saturday, Dec. 15, in Massachusetts National Cemetery, Bourne. There are no calling hours. Memorial contributions may be made to the Hospice and Palliative Care Cape Cod Inc., 923 Main St., Yarmouthport, MA 02675. Turgeon Funeral Home, 56 Main St., Millbury, is directing arrangements.

Helen C. Whelpley, 98

WEBSTER -- Helen C. (Moses) Whelpley, 98, of 749 School St., formerly of Newton and Edgartown, died Thursday, Dec. 6, in Hubbard Regional Hospital, after a long illness.

Her husband, Frederick E. Whelpley, died in 1979. She leaves two sons, Peter Whelpley of Limerick, Maine, and Paul Whelpley of Smyrna, Fla.; a daughter, Gail C. Brochu of Edgartown; 17 grandchildren; 34 great-grandchildren; and a great-great-granddaughter. A son, David Whelpley, died in 1953. She was born in Fitchburg, daughter of Thomas W. and Agnes (Mercier) Moses, and lived in Newton and Edgartown before moving to Webster in 1996.

Mrs. Whelpley was a lunchroom supervisor at the Pierce School in West Newton for more than 20 years, retiring many years ago. She was a longtime member and a former deaconess of Second Church in West Newton.

The graveside service will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday, Dec. 12, in Newton Cemetery, Newton. There are no calling hours. Robert J. Miller Funeral Home and Lake Chapel, 366 School St., is directing arrangements.

Peter P. Belauskas, 86

MARLBORO -- Peter P. Belauskas, 86, of Marlboro, formerly of Worcester, a retired salesman and a veteran of World War II, died Thursday, Dec. 6, at his home.

He leaves his wife of 60 years, Helen D. (Pleasure) Belauskas; a son, Steven A. Belauskas of Berlin; a brother, Albert A. Belauskas in South Carolina; two grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. He was born in Lawrence, son of Louis and Annie (Michunas) Belauskas, and lived many years in Worcester before moving to Marlboro in 1998. He was an Army veteran of World War II.

Mr. Belauskas was a salesman for Northeastern Distributors Co. in Boston for many years, retiring in 1983. He was a member of Our Lady of the Rosary Church in Worcester, and was a former member of the Kiwanis Club.

The funeral will be held at 10 a.m. Monday, Dec. 10, from William R. Short and Son Funeral Home, 95 West Main St., with a Mass at 11 a.m. in Our Lady of the Rosary Church, 23 Fales St., Worcester. Entombment will be in Notre Dame Cemetery, Worcester. Calling hours are 4 to 7 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 9, in the funeral home. Memorial contributions may be made to the Alzheimer's and Related Disease Foundation, 1 Kendall Square, Building 600, Cambridge, MA 02193.
