SHREWSBURY -- John F. Lyden, 82, of 36 North Quinsigamond Ave., formerly of Stoneland Road, a World War II veteran and a retired salesman, died Friday, July 27, in St. Francis Home of Worcester after an illness.

His wife, Ruth M. (Dudley) Lyden, died in 1989. He leaves four sons, John Lyden Jr. of San Diego, Thomas and Dennis Lyden, both of Bellingham, and Brian Lyden of Virginia Beach, Va. ; a daughter, Diane Lyden of San Diego; two sisters, Marguerite Conlon of Worcester and Katherine Fitzgibbons of Auburn; 10 grandchildren; nieces and nephews. Four brothers, Charles, Robert, Paul and Joseph Lyden, and a sister, Doris Horan, predeceased him. He was born in Worcester, son of Charles and Margaret (Foy) Lyden, and moved to Shrewsbury in 1947. He graduated from North High School, Worcester, and was an Army veteran of World War II.

Mr. Lyden was a salesman more than 20 years for J. J. Nissen Baking Co., in Worcester, retiring in 1974. He was a member of St. Anne's Church and Teamsters Union Local 170, Worcester.

The funeral will be held Tuesday, July 31, from Mercadante Funeral Home & Chapel, 370 Plantation St., Worcester, with a Mass at 10 a. m. in St. Anne's Church, 130 Boston Turnpike. Burial will be in Mountain View Cemetery. Calling hours are 4 to 8 p. m. Monday, July 30, in the funeral home. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to American Cancer Society, 30 Speen St., Framingham, MA 01701.

CHARLTON -- Paul H. Manning, 95, formerly of Grandview Road, died Sunday, July 29, in Clark Manor Nursing Home, Worcester, after a long illness.

His wife, Minnie (Davis) Manning, died in 1998. He leaves a brother, Kenneth R. Manning of Millbury; nephews and nieces. He was born in East Templeton, son of Charles and Anne (Sykes) Manning.

Mr. Manning was a truck driver for the former Bayer-Mingolia Co., Millbury, before retiring 30 years ago. Previously, he was a trolley car motorman in Charlton.

The funeral will be held at 11 a. m. Thursday, Aug. 2, in the Robert J. Miller-Charlton Funeral Home, 175 Old Worcester Road. Burial will be in Northside Cemetery. A calling period is 10:30 to 11 a. m. Thursday, Aug. 2, in the funeral home.

LANCASTER -- Catherine A. Marble, 47, of 45 Old Lunenburg Road, a retired postal clerk, died Friday, July 27, after suffering injuries in an automobile accident.

She leaves a son, Cody Blair of Lancaster; four brothers, John F. Marble of Lancaster, Mark C. Marble, Stephen T. Marble, and Frank X. Marble, all of Athol; three sisters, Martha E. Moore of Lancaster, Margaret M. Marble of Leominster, and Mary L. Tervo of Athol; several nephews and nieces. She was born in Leominster, daughter of John I. and Catherine H. (Dineen) Marble and lived in Lancaster most of her life. She graduated from Nashoba Regional High School in 1972.

Ms. Marble worked many years as a clerk at Shirley post office until retiring several years ago.

A memorial service will be held at a date and time to be announced. There are no calling hours. Memorial Contributions may be made to the American Lung Association, 1 Abbey Lane, Middleboro, MA, 02346. Philbin-Comeau Funeral Home, 176 Water St., Clinton, is directing arrangements.

LEOMINSTER -- Antonetta M. (Fraticelli) Arpano Marcello, 106, of 59 Lancaster St., died Monday, July 30, in The Highlands Care Center in Fitchburg after an illness.

Her husband, Domenico Marcello, predeceased her. She leaves three sons, Michele Arpano and Vildo Marcello, both of Leominster, and Guido Marcello of Spring Hills, Fla. ; a daughter, Concetta Innamorati of Dallas; many grandchildren; many great-grandchildren; a great-great-grandchild; nephews and nieces. Her first husband, Michele Arpano, predeceased her. She was born in Foggia, Italy, daughter of Giuseppe and Angela (Porro) Fraticelli, and moved to Leominster in 1910.

Mrs. Marcello worked in the assembly department at Foster Grant Co., retiring many years ago.

She was a member of St. Anna's Church.

A funeral will be held Friday, Aug. 3, from Silas F. Richardson & Son Funeral Home, 106 West St., with a Mass at 10 a. m. in St. Anna's Church, 194 Lancaster St. Burial will be in St. Leo's Cemetery. There are no calling hours.

EAST BROOKFIELD -- Irene W. (Cantello) McCormick, 93, of 176 Lakeview Ave., died Sunday, July 29, in The Meadows of Leicester.

Her husband of 62 years, Bernard E. McCormick, died in 1992. She leaves a daughter, Agnes M. Davis of North Brookfield; three sons, Bernard F. McCormick of Charlton, James E. McCormick of Wayne, Pa., and John W. McCormick of East Brookfield; 14 grandchildren; and 13 great-grandchildren. A sister, Evelyn M. Bourget of Big Pine Key, Fla., and a brother, Frederick Cantello of East Brookfield, predeceased her. She was born in Worcester, daughter of William and Nellie (Collins) Cantello, and moved here in 1945.

Mrs. McCormick worked 11 years in the courtesy booth at The Fair in Spencer, retiring in 1972. She was a member of St. John the Baptist Church since 1945, its St. Anne's Guild, and the East Brookfield Senior Citizens.

The funeral will be held Wednesday, Aug. 1, from J. Henri Morin & Son Funeral Home, 23 Maple St., Spencer, with a Mass at noon in St. John the Baptist Church, North Brookfield Road. Burial will be in Evergreen Cemetery. A calling hour is 10:30 to 11:30 a. m. Wednesday, Aug. 1, in the funeral home. Memorial donations may be made to St. John the Baptist Church Renovation Fund, North Brookfield Road, East Brookfield, MA 01515.

WORCESTER -- Mary R. (Finn) McGrail, 88, of 323 June St., a former clothing store worker, died Wednesday, July 25, at home after an illness.

Her husband, Philip J. McGrail, died in 1980. She leaves a son, Patrick J. McGrail of Worcester, with whom she lived; a daughter, Sheila A. Henderson of Norwood, Colo. ; two sisters, Anna Finn of Worcester and Helen McNally of Southbridge; two grandchildren; and three nieces. She was born in Worcester, daughter of Patrick J. and Catherine A. (Reid) Finn, and lived most of her life in Worcester, summering in York Beach, Maine. She graduated from Sacred Heart Academy.

Mrs. McGrail worked at Richard Healy Co., a women's apparel store. She was a member of St. Charles Borromeo Church.

The funeral will be held Monday, July 30, from Athy Memorial Home, 111 Lancaster St., with a Mass at 11 a. m. in St. Charles Borromeo Church, 341 June St. Burial will be in St. John's Cemetery. Calling hours are 9 to 10:30 a. m. Monday, July 30, in the funeral home. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Alzheimer's Association, 36 Cameron Ave., Cambridge, MA 01420.

Helen T. Mercuri, 84
HUDSON -- Helen T. (Coito) Mercuri, 84, of Hudson, a retired assistant librarian, died Monday, July 30, at home.

Her husband, Lorenzo Mercuri, died in 1996. She leaves a son, Lawrence Mercuri of Hudson; a brother, Henry Coito of Hudson; two sisters, Sarah Riddle and Antoinette Souza, both of Hudson; two grandsons; nephews and nieces. She was born in Hudson, daughter of Antonio and Anna (Sousa) Coito.

Mrs. Mercuri was assistant librarian at Hudson Public Library before retiring.

She also brought and read books to patients at St. Jude's Nursing Home, residents of the Brigham Circle housing project for the elderly, and to shut-ins unable to visit the library. She was a member of Health Planning Council for Greater Boston Inc., an organization to improve conditions and facilities in hospitals and nursing homes. She was selected as Enterprising Woman for January, 1973.

A funeral Mass will be at 9 a. m. Thursday, Aug. 2, in St. Michael Church, 21 Manning St. Burial will be in Forestvale Cemetery. There are no calling hours. Donations may be made to St. Michael School, Angel Fund, High Street, Hudson, MA 01749; or to UMass Memorial Foundation, Hospice Program, 16 Shaffner St., Worcester, MA 01605. Tighe-Hamilton Funeral Home, 50 Central St., is directing arrangements.

LEOMINSTER -- Rose (Milano) Morrell, 86, of 48 Newton Heights, died Sunday, July 29, in HealthAlliance Leominster Hospital after an illness.

She leaves her husband of 52 years, John H. Morrell; two sons, Frank R. Morrell of Leominster and John E. Morrell of Marshfield; a daughter, Ann J. Gaffney of Leominster; a brothers, Ciro A. “Jerry” Milano of Fitchburg; a sister, Palma A. Imprescia of Leominster; six grandchildren; a great-grandson; nephews and nieces. A brother, Louis Milano, died April 17. She was born in Fitchburg, daughter of Francesco and Maria (Cicala) Milano, and moved to Leominster in 1949.

Mrs. Morrell was an assembler many years for the former Foster Grant Co. before retiring.

She was a member of St. Anna's Church, and she enjoyed traveling.

The funeral will be held Wednesday, Aug. 1, from Silas F. Richardson & Son Funeral Home, 106 West St., with a Mass at 10 a. m. in St. Anna's Church, 194 Lancaster St. Burial will be in St. Leo's Cemetery. Calling hours are from 6 to 8 p. m. Tuesday, July 31, in the funeral home.

Martin Myers, at 62; was Vermont legislator
MONTPELIER, Vt. -- Rep. Martin Myers, a first-term Republican in the Vermont House, died Monday. He was 62.

Myers had been battling cancer for months.

He was long active in local causes and politics in the town of Essex, where he lived for 23 years. He served more than 16 years on the town board of selectmen and was a member of the Chittenden County Metropolitan Planning Organization.

“He was dedicated to public service in the town of Essex, in regional organizations and as a representative in Montpelier,” said Patrick Garahan, the state Republican chairman. “He will be missed by all. ”

He is survived by his wife and two daughters.
