Antonitte Renzi, 86

LEOMINSTER -- Antonitte “Ann” (Palermo) Renzi, 86, of 90 Dillon St., a retired executive, died Sunday, April 8, in Mariner Health Care, Fitchburg, after an illness.

Her husband, Anthony Renzi, died in 1971. She leaves a son, Virginio “Virge” Renzi, of Leominster; a daughter, Sandra Lee M. Armstrong of Leominster; three brothers, Thomas, Joseph and Rosario Palermo, all of Leominster; four sisters, Mary Kurasowicz, Nancy Spinelli and Alvina Navaroli, all of Leominster, and Concette Caputo of Worcester; three grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; and nieces and nephews. Two brothers, Nicholas and Vito Palermo, predeceased her. Born in Rutland, Vt., daughter of Gaitino and Angela (Favara) Palermo, she moved many years ago to Leominster.

Mrs. Renzi was vice president of A.J. Renzi Plastic Corp. until her retirement.

She was a member of St. Anna's Church and the Society of Ladies of St. Anne. She enjoyed gardening and knitting.

The funeral will be held Wednesday, April 11, from the Brandon-Simard Funeral Home, 305 Wanoosnoc Road, Fitchburg, with a Mass at a time to be announced in St. Anna's Church, 194 Lancaster St. Burial will be in St. Leo's Cemetery. Calling hours are from 5 to 8 p.m., Tuesday, April 10, in the funeral home. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the St. Anna's Church Restoration Fund, 194 Lancaster St, Leominster, MA 01453 or the American Diabetes Association, PO Box 31160, Hartford, CT 06150.

Ann M. Revere, 87

Wednesday, April 4, 2001

LEOMINSTER -- Ann M. (Statuto) Revere, 87, formerly of 161 Spruce St., died Monday, April 2, in Jewish Memorial Hospital in Boston, after an illness.

Her husband, George Revere, died in 1989. She leaves several nephews and nieces. A brother, George Statuto of Clinton, and four sisters, Mary Trull of Fitchburg, Lillian Bryce and Emma Rigopoulos, both of Leominster, and Elenor Majewicz of Lancaster, predeceased her. She was born in Fitchburg, daughter of John and Angelina (Colello) Statuto, and lived in Leominster most of her life.

Along with her husband, she owned and operated the former Radio Electric Service Co. for more than 30 years, retiring many years ago. She was a longtime member of Our Lady of the Lake Church.

The funeral will be held Friday, April 6, from Lavery-Chartrand Funeral Home, 99 Summer St., Fitchburg, with a Mass at 11:45 a.m. in Our Lady of the Lake Church, 1400 Main St. Burial will be in St. Bernard's Cemetery, Fitchburg. A calling hour is 10:30 to 11:30 a.m. Friday, April 6, in the funeral home.

Martin A. Roy, 83

FITCHBURG -- Martin A. Roy, 83, of 1023 John Fitch Highway, and 3826 Rock Bay Drive, Louisville, Ky., died Saturday, April 7, in the Jewish Hospital, Cincinnati.

His wife of 55 years, Florence (Belanger) Roy, died Dec. 29. He leaves a son, Norman M. Roy of Lunenburg; a daughter, Maxine Santella of Louisville, with whom he lived; a brother, Nazaire Roy of Dover, N.H.; a sister, Rachel Goulet of Dover; four grandchildren; several nephews and nieces. A brother, Gerard Roy of Dover, and a sister, Florence Labrie of Biddeford, Maine, predeceased him. He was born in Somersworth, N.H., son of Joseph and Malvina (Dubois) Roy, and lived most of his life in Fitchburg. He served in the Army Air Forces during World War II.

Mr. Roy was a salesman for the former DeLongchamp Cadillac-Oldsmobile dealership for 17 years. He later owned and operated Marty's Auto Sales on Summer Street for several years, retiring in 1982.

He was a member of St. Francis of Assisi Church.

The funeral will be held Tuesday, April 10, from Lavery-Chartrand Funeral Home, 99 Summer St., with a Mass at 11 a.m. in St. Francis of Assisi Church, 81 Sheridan St. Burial will be in St. Bernard's Cemetery. A calling hour will be held from 9:45 to 10:45 a.m. Tuesday, April 10, in the funeral home. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the American Battle Monuments Commission, PO Box 96766, Washington, DC 20090-6766.

Joseph J. Rutkevicz, 88

Friday, April 6, 2001

WORCESTER -- Joseph J. Rutkevicz, 88, of 70 Briarwood Circle, a retired carpenter, died Wednesday, April 4, at home.

His wife of 58 years, Helen F. (Gwozdouski) Rutkevicz, died in 1996. He leaves a daughter, Carol J. Early of Holden; three granddaughters, Christine, Kathleen and Colleen Early, all of Holden; nephews and nieces. Born in New York City, son of Christopher and Anna Rutkauskas, he lived most of his life in Worcester. He attended Worcester Boys Trade High School. He was a World War II Army veteran who served as a technical sergeant in the Rhineland and Central Europe. He received the Bronze Star.

Mr. Rutkevicz was a carpentry worker 14 years for the City of Worcester Water Department before retiring. He previously was a wire drawer 20 years for American Steel and Wire Co.

He was a member of St. Christopher's Church and Southworks Post 3657 Veterans of Foreign Wars. He was a former member of Ascension Church and enjoyed baseball.

The funeral, with military honors, will be held Saturday, April 7, from Dirsa-Kazlauskas Funeral Home, 51 Providence St., with a Mass at 10 a.m. in St. Christopher's Church, 950 West Boylston St. Entombment will be in Notre Dame Cemetery Mausoleum. Calling hours are 4 to 7 p.m. Friday, April 6, in the funeral home. Memorial donations may be made to VNA Care Hospice Inc., 120 Thomas St., Worcester, MA 01608.

Edward Sack, 68

Monday, April 9, 2001

BOSTON -- Edward Sack, 68, formerly of Worcester, died Friday, April 6, in Boston.

He leaves two nieces, Deborah Sack of San Jose, Calif., and Barbara Illowsky of Cupertino, Calif.; a grandnephew and two grandnieces. A brother, Paul Sack, predeceased him. He was born the son of Bernard and Rebecca (Daitch) Sack. He served in the Army from 1954 to 1956, and lived in Worcester from 1985 until earlier this year.

Mr. Sack was a retired attorney.

The graveside service will be held at 2:45 p.m. Tuesday, April 10, in Sharon Memorial Park, Sharon. Donations may be made to ALS Lou Gehrig Foundation, 195 Madison Ave., New York City, 10016. Schlossberg & Solomon Memorial Chapel, 824 Washington St., Canton, is directing arrangements.

Ronald C. Sargent, 64

THOMPSON -- Ronald C. Sargent, 64, of 712 Quinebaug Road, Quinebaug, a retired construction equipment operator, died Sunday, April 8, in Day Kimball Hospital in Putnam.

He leaves his wife of 41 years, Marion M. (Brown) Sargent; a son, Todd R. Sargent of Quinebaug; a daughter, Lisa R. Elliot of East Douglas; two stepdaughters, Joann Smith of Niantic and Deborah Bessette of Dudley; three brothers, Roger E. Sargent of Webster, Derral Sargent of Tennessee and Merril Sargent of New Hampshire; four sisters, Norma Moody of Webster, Dixie Dumont, Cynthia Tryba and Elaine Smith, all of New Hampshire; 10 grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; many nieces and nephews. He was born in Webster, son of Marvin and Ruth (Metcalf) Sargent, and lived in Brooklyn before moving to Webster six months ago.

Mr. Sargent was a construction equipment operator for A.J. Letourneau in Auburn, retiring because of illness. He was previously a traffic officer for N & E Security.

There are no funeral services planned. Calling hours are from 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday, April 10, in Shaw-Majercik Funeral Home, 48 School St., Webster.

Ingrid A. Sarkala, 80

HANOVER -- Ingrid A. (Hellberg) Sarkala, 80, of Hanover, formerly of Worcester, died Sunday, April 1, in Mill Pond Nursing Home.

Her husband, William A. Sarkala, predeceased her. She leaves a son, Robert W. Sarkala of Brookfield; a daughter, Karen J. Watson of Plymouth; a sister, Birgit E. Landgren of Plymouth; and a niece. A brother, Nils Hellberg, predeceased her. She was born in Gothenburg, Sweden, daughter of Karl and Aurora Hellberg, and lived most of her life in Worcester. She also lived in St. Petersburg, Fla., and San Diego before moving to Hanover seven years ago. She graduated from North High School and Peacock Hairdressing Academy, both in Worcester.

Mrs. Sarkala was a homemaker.

The funeral service will be private. There are no calling hours. Memorial donations may be made to Hospice of the South Shore, 100 Bay State Drive, Braintree, MA 02185-9060. National Cremation Service, 86 Copeland St., Quincy, is directing arrangements.

Mario G. Sarro Sr., 70

SHREWSBURY -- Mario G. Sarro Sr., 70, of 5169 Martins Crossing Road in Stone Mountain, Ga., formerly of Old Mill Road, a retired welder, died Wednesday, April 4, in Emory North Lake Medical Center in Tucker, Ga.

He leaves his wife of 44 years, Kaye E. (Johnson) Sarro; a daughter, Gina M. English, with whom he lived; four sons, Mario G. Sarro Jr. and Peter K. Sarro, both of Millbury, Mark D. Sarro of Worcester and Paul A. Sarro of Leicester; nine grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren. He was born in Dedham and lived most of his life in Shrewsbury before moving to Georgia three years ago. He was an Army veteran of the Korean War, serving as a sergeant in Germany.

Mr. Sarro was a welder at Coes Knife Co., Worcester, where he worked 34 years, retiring in 1990. He was formerly an amateur boxer and an instructing boxer to the Army soldiers in Europe. He was a member of Mount Olivet Church. He enjoyed fishing.

The funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Monday, April 9, in Mount Olivet Church, 34 Prospect St. Burial will be private. Calling hours are 4 to 7 p.m. Sunday, April 8, in Britton-Summers Funeral Home, 4 Church St., Westboro. Flowers may be sent, or donations made to Mount Olivet Lutheran Church, Memorial Fund, 34 Prospect St., Shrewsbury, MA 01545.

Barry L. Savage, 54

SAN FRANCISCO -- Barry L. Savage, 54, of 4219 21st St. and of Palm Springs, formerly of Worcester, Mass., a pharmacist, died of congestive heart failure Sunday, April 8, at his home, as a result of complications of AIDS.

He leaves his father, Louis Savage of Worcester; two brothers, Ed “Moose” Savage of Lynn, Mass., and Richard Freeman of San Francisco; a sister, Sandra Meltzer of Worcester; nephews, nieces, grandnephews and grandnieces. His friend and companion of 23 years, Thomas Sinclair, died in 1999. He was born in Worcester, son of Ruth (Shulman) Savage, and lived in San Francisco and Palm Springs since 1988. He formerly lived in Boston; Kennebunkport, Maine; Eugene, Ore.; Paris, France; and Los Angeles. He graduated from Classical High School, Worcester, in 1964, and from the Massachusetts College of Pharmacy, Boston, in 1970, and earned a master's degree in counseling from Goddard College in Plainfield, Vt.

Mr. Savage was a registered pharmacist for more than 30 years, and co-owned and operated Specialty Catering in Paris for three years. He was a former member of the San Francisco Planning Council, and past president of the Pharmacy Union at Thrifty Payless Pharmacies of San Francisco. He was an AIDS activist.

The funeral service will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday, April 11, in Perlman Funeral Home, 1026 Main St., Worcester. Burial will be in Holy Society Cemetery in Leicester, Mass. Memorial observance will be held through Friday afternoon, April 13, at the residence of Louis Savage, 964 Pleasant St., Worcester. Memorial contributions may be made to Immune Enhancement Project, 3450 16th St., San Francisco, CA 94114; or to PAWS (Pets Are Wonderful Support), 3248 16th St., San Francisco, CA 94114.

Erna Sawdon, 79

Wednesday, April 11, 2001

HOLDEN -- Erna (Nilsen) Sawdon, 79, of Holden, a teacher of the deaf, died Monday, April 9, at her home, after a struggle with cancer.

She leaves her husband, Will W. Sawdon; a daughter, Judith Caldwell of Northboro; two sons, William J. Sawdon of Madison, Conn., and Robert N. Sawdon of Nashville, Tenn.; a sister, Gerd McManus in Florida; and three grandchildren. Two brothers, Arne and Nils Nilsen, predeceased her. She was born in Mandel, Norway, daughter of Haakon and Adeliade (Johannesen) Nilsen, and came to the United States in 1933.

Mrs. Sawdon was a teacher of the deaf in New Jersey, Ohio and Connecticut. She was a former member of the board of directors of YOU Inc., Worcester.

The funeral service and burial will be private. There are no calling hours. Memorial contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society, 30 Speen St., Framingham, MA 01701. Leland-Hays Funeral Home, 56 Main St., Northboro, is directing arrangements.

John F. Schubert, 75

WORCESTER -- John F. Schubert, 75, of 558 Mill St., a retired sheet metal worker, died Tuesday, April 3, in St. Vincent Hospital at Worcester Medical Center after an illness.

He leaves a son, Eric J. Schubert of Worcester; his former wife, Shirley M. (Houde) Schubert of Worcester; a nephew, James Gallagher of Worcester; a niece, Darlene Gallagher, of Worcester. A sister, Violet V. Schubert of Worcester, died in 1970, and another sister, Jayne A. Nolan of Worcester, died in 1997. He was born in Lowell, son of Albert G. and Sophie H. (Rzonca) Schubert, and graduated from Commerce High School. He was a Marine Corps veteran of World War II, serving in Asia and the Pacific.

Mr. Schubert was a sheet metal journeyman for Sheet Metal Union Local 63. He worked many years with the William F. Lynch Co., and retired in 1989.

The funeral will be held Friday, April 6, from Fay Brothers Funeral Home, 9 Hammond St., with a Mass at 10 a.m. in Our Lady of the Angels Church, 1222 Main St. Burial will be in St. John's Cemetery. Calling hours are 4 to 7 p.m. Thursday, April 5, in the funeral home. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the American Cancer Society, 30 Speen St., Framingham, MA 01701.

Elsie Severin, 82

WORCESTER -- Elsie (Alleyne) Severin, 82, of 24 Frothingham Road, died Wednesday, April 11, in Fairlawn Rehabilitation Hospital after an illness.

Her husband of 57 years, Joseph W. Severin, died in 1998. She leaves two sons, Compton Alleyne of South America and Revlon Severin of Worcester; five daughters, Leila Baptiste of St. Lucia, Patricia Ifill of Maryland, Joycelyn Severin-Boston of New York City, Evelyn Severin-Savory of Randolph and Barbara Gibbons, with whom she lived; a brother, Lloyd Alleyne of New Jersey; two sisters, Iris Alleyne of Guyana, South America, and Francene Nightingale of Florida; 21 grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; nephews and nieces. A daughter, Eunice Reynolds, died in 1986. Three brothers, Claude, Hubert and Irving Alleyne, also predeceased her. She was born in Guyana, daughter of Alfred and Elvira (Fredericks) Alleyne, and lived there many years before moving to Worcester in 1990.

Mrs. Severin was a member of Northboro Seventh-day Adventist Church. She enjoyed gardening.

The funeral service will be held at 6 p.m. Monday, April 16, in Northboro Seventh-day Adventist Church, 30 Brigham Road, Northboro. Burial will be Tuesday, April 17, in Hope Cemetery. Calling hours are 4 to 6 p.m. Monday, April 16, in the church. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to American Lung Association of Central Massachusetts, 1 Abbey Lane, Middleboro, MA 02346. Mercadante Funeral Home & Chapel, 370 Plantation St., is directing arrangements.
