Roger P. Brown, 73, retired Worcester teacher

Thursday, March 1, 2001

WORCESTER -- Roger P. Brown, 73, of 10 Cumberland St., a retired teacher, died Wednesday, Feb. 28, at home.

He leaves his wife, Pauline T. (O'Brien) Brown; two sons, Dr. Roger M. Brown of Bellingham and Dana P. Brown of Worcester; three daughters, Dr. Doreen M. Dargon of Jacksonville, Fla., Kristine B. Beckman of Newtown, Conn., and Lynne E. Carlo of Nashua, N.H.; a brother, Donald R. Brown of Penroy, Wash.; seven grandchildren. He was born in Ayer, son of Albert and Hazel (Lewis) Brown. He received a bachelor's degree and a master's degree from Worcester State College. He did post graduate studies at the College of the Holy Cross, the University of Connecticut, and the University of Bridgeport in Bridgeport, Conn. A World War II Navy veteran, he served with the Seabees in the South Pacific and Okinawa.

Mr. Brown was a teacher many years in Worcester schools, retiring in 1990. He previously worked for the U.S. Postal Service.

He was a charter member of the Educational Association of Worcester and was a board member for 26 years. He served six years as president.

He was a member of the South Worcester County Retired Teachers Association. He received a Community Service Award from the United Way, and the Frederick Reilly Award and Friends of Education Award from the Worcester Educational Association.

The funeral will be held Saturday, March 3, from Nordgren, Carrigan, Mangsen Memorial Chapel, 300 Lincoln St., with a Mass at 10 a.m. in St. Christopher's Church, 950 West Boylston St. Burial will be at the family's convenience. Calling hours are 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Friday, March 2, in the funeral home. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Scholarship Fund, Educational Association of Worcester, 397 Grove St., Worcester, MA 01605.

Dolores C. Eisner, 75

Sunday, February 25, 2001

LEOMINSTER -- Dolores C. (Caissey) Eisner, 75, of 341 Union St., a registered nurse, died Friday, Feb. 23, in St. Vincent Hospital at Worcester Medical Center after an illness.

Her husband of 37 years, John C. Eisner, died in 1984. She leaves a son, John G. Eisner of Leominster; three daughters, Mary A. Eisner of Derry, N.H., Joan E. Eisner of Vaughan, Va., and Marie Oakes of Pennsylvania; five grandchildren; nephews and nieces. Four brothers and a sister predeceased her. She was born in Leominster, daughter of Edward and Flora (Contois) Caissey.

Mrs. Eisner was a registered nurse at area hospitals and a volunteer for Leominster Mayor Dean J. Mazzarella. She was a member of Holy Family of Nazareth Church, and enjoyed knitting and crocheting.

The funeral will be held Tuesday, Feb. 27, from M.A. Simard & Son Funeral Home, 14 Walker St., with a Mass at 10 a.m. in Holy Family of Nazareth Church, 800 Union St. Burial will be in St. Cecilia's Cemetery. Calling hours are 7 to 9 p.m. Monday, Feb. 26, in the funeral home.

Mercedes Gagliardi, 89; retired registered nurse

DUDLEY -- Mercedes M. (Fink) Gagliardi, 89, of 30 Raymond St., formerly of Main Street in Millbury, a retired nurse, died Saturday, March 3, at home after a long illness.

Her husband, John P. Gagliardi, died in 1983. She leaves a daughter, Jane R. Wojciechowski of Dudley; a brother, James Hayes of Millbury; a sister, Marcella Hayes of Millbury; three grandchildren; nephews and nieces. She was born in Leicester, daughter of James F. and Delia (Hennegan) Fink, and lived most of her life in Millbury before moving to Dudley in 1984. She graduated from Millbury High School in 1929 and from Worcester City Hospital School of Nursing, Worcester, in 1933.

Mrs. Gagliardi was a registered nurse and did school and industrial nursing. She was also a staff nurse and school nurse 10 years in Millbury, retiring in 1978. She previously was a nurse at Felters Co., Millbury. She was a member of St. Anthony de Padua Church and St. Brigid's Church, Millbury, and a life member of the Alumni Association of Worcester City Hospital School of Nursing.

The funeral will be held Friday, March 9, from Mulhane Home for Funerals, 45 Main St., Millbury, with a Mass at 10 a.m. St. Brigid's Church, 59 Main St., Millbury. Burial will be in St. Brigid's Cemetery, Millbury. Calling hours are 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Thursday, March, 8, in the funeral home. Donations may be made to Harrington Hospice, 61 Pine St., Southbridge, MA 01550; or to Dudley Firefighters Association, 128 West Main St., Dudley, MA 01571.

Beryl M. Hanson, 86

WORCESTER -- Beryl M. (Malmberg) Hanson, 86, of 91 Country Club Blvd., a medical records worker, died Sunday, March 4, in Providence House Extended Care Center.

Her husband of 56 years, John F. Hanson, died in 1992. She leaves a son, Mark G. Hanson of Conway, N.H.; three daughters, Linda Woodbury of Callawassie Island, S.C., Gretchen Mosman of Watertown, Conn., and Dana Hanson of Etna, N.H.; a sister, Jane M. Brown of Sterling; six grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; a nephew and five nieces. A son, Paul M. “Spider” Hanson of North Hollywood, Calif., died last year. She was born in Worcester, daughter of Elmer and Theresa (Russell) Malmberg. She graduated from Malden High School.

Mrs. Hanson worked in the medical records departments of Holden Hospital and Hahnemann Family Health Care Center, retiring in 1997. She was a member of The Pearls, and a former member of the Worcester Country Club.

The funeral will be held at 1 p.m. Thursday, March 8, in Caswell-King Funeral Home, 474 Grove St. Burial will be private. Calling hours are 7 to 9 p.m. Wednesday, March 7, in the funeral home. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society, Massachusetts Division, 30 Speen St., Framingham, MA 01701.

Gerald J. Lavin, 91

WORCESTER -- Gerald J. Lavin, 91, of 20 Mary Scano Drive, a former diner owner, died Monday, Feb. 26, in UMass Memorial Medical Center -- Memorial Campus.

His wife, Wanda J. (Nolewski) Lavin, died in 1986. He leaves two sisters, Sister Helen Elizabeth of the Sisters of St. Joseph in Springfield and Mary R. Tebo of South Grafton; and several nephews and nieces. He was born in Worcester, son of John T. and Ellen E. (Scully) Lavin, and graduated from Commerce High School. He attended Northeastern University, Boston, and was an Army veteran of World War II.

Mr. Lavin owned and operated the former Gerry's Diner and the former Millbrook Diner. He was a member of Knights of Columbus Alhambra Council 88 and its Bishop O'Reilly Assembly 4th Degree. He delivered Meals on Wheels for several years. Mr. Lavin belonged to St. Stephen's Church.

The funeral will be held Thursday, March 1, from Fay Brothers Funeral Home, 9 Hammond St., with a Mass at 10 a.m. in St. Stephen's Church, 357 Grafton St. Burial will be in St. John's Cemetery. Calling hours are 3 to 6 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 28, in the funeral home. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Sisters of St. Joseph Retirement Fund, Mont Marie, Holyoke, MA 01040.

Rose Manoogian, 86

Saturday, February 24, 2001

CHATHAM -- Rose Manoogian, 86, formerly of 182 June St., Worcester, a retired electrocardiogram technician, died Thursday, Feb. 22, in Liberty Commons Nursing Home.

She leaves three nephews and a niece. A brother, Dr. Michael Manoogian of Eastham, and two sisters, Virginia Manoogian of Worcester and Mary Michel of Dover, predeceased her. Born in Springfield, daughter of Sam and Sultan (Eramigian) Manoogian, she graduated from David Hale Fanning Trade School, Worcester. She lived many years in Worcester before moving in 1993 to Dover and, in 1999, to Chatham.

Ms. Manoogian worked many years as an EKG technician at Fairlawn Hospital and at Doctors Hospital before her retirement. She was a member of the Armenian Church of Our Saviour.

The funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Monday, Feb. 26, in Armenian Church of Our Saviour, 87 Salisbury St., Worcester. Burial will be in Hope Cemetery. There are no calling hours. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Armenian Church of Our Saviour, 87 Salisbury St., Worcester, MA 01609. Caswell-King Funeral Home, 474 Grove St., Worcester, is directing arrangements.

Patricia A. Metterville

WEST BROOKFIELD -- Patricia A. Metterville, 51, of 88 George Allen Road, a hairdresser, died Thursday, March 1, in the Hospice Residence, Worcester, after a long illness.

She leaves her parents, Henry Metterville Jr. and Anita (Young) Metterville of Brookfield; four brothers, Dennis N. Metterville of Woodstock, Gary H. Metterville of East Brookfield, David L. Metterville of Spencer and Scott H. Metterville of Brookfield; two sisters, Christine A. Metterville of Brookfield and Crystal J. Lachambre of West Brookfield, with whom she lived; nephews and nieces; and her companion of eight years, David Boudreau of Granby, Conn. She was born in Worcester and lived many years in Spencer before moving to Gray, Maine, in 1994 and to Granby in 1996. She moved here in January. She graduated from David Prouty High School, Spencer, and Brom's Hairdressing School, Worcester.

Ms. Metterville was a hairdresser 26 years for Lorraine's Hairdressing and four years for Hair Designs By Susan, both in Spencer. She worked the past two years at the Hairloft, Granby. She was a certified yoga instructor, and enjoyed hiking and horseback riding.

A memorial Mass will be at 5 p.m. Tuesday, March 6, in Our Lady of the Rosary Church, 7 Church St., Spencer. After cremation, burial will be at the family's convenience. There are no calling hours. Please omit flowers. Donations may be made to New England Animal Shelter, 204 Highland Ave., Salem, MA 01970; or to Best Friends Animal Sanctuary, 5001 Angel Canyon Road, Kanab, UT 84741. J. George H. Mongeau, 71

Wednesday, March 7, 2001

WORCESTER -- George H. Mongeau, 71, of 65 Garrison Ave., a retired supervisor, died Saturday, March 3, at home after an illness.

He leaves his wife of 53 years, Marie T. (Gregoire) Mongeau; a daughter, Lynn M. Schoen of Westboro; a sister, Emelda Choinard of Lancaster; and three grandchildren. He was born in Fall River, son of Henry and Agnes (Contois) Mongeau, and lived most of his life in Worcester. He was an Army veteran of the Korean War.

Mr. Mongeau owned a contracting business and most recently was a supervisor for Morgan Construction Co., retiring in 1995.

He was a member of Our Lady of the Rosary Church and the Knights of Columbus Alhambra Council 88, where he was a fourth degree knight. He enjoyed making furniture, fishing, and reading.

The memorial Mass will be held at 6 p.m. Thursday, March 8, in Our Lady of the Rosary Church, 25 Fales St. Burial will be in Mooreland Cemetery, Paxton. There are no calling hours. Alfred Roy & Sons Funeral Home, 12 Hammond St., is directing arrangements.

Anthony Pashoian, 84

Wednesday, March 7, 2001

WORCESTER -- Anthony Pashoian, 84, a World War II veteran and retired cabinetmaker, died Monday, March 5, in Briarwood Nursing Home, Worcester.

His wife, Anne (Berokabich) Pashoian, died in 1990. He leaves a brother, Thomas Pashoian of Worcester; two sisters, Sally Yagjian and Lucy Sivazlian, both of Worcester; several nieces and nephews; many grandnieces and grandnephews. He was born in Worcester, son of Garabed and Armaven (Asianian) Pashoian. He was an Army veteran of World War II, serving in Europe. He moved to Antrim, N.H., in 1957, and later lived in Bradenton, Fla., before returning to Worcester in 1990.

Mr. Pashoian was a finish cabinetmaker at Gates Inc. in Peterborough, N.H.

The funeral will be held Friday, March 9, from Jellison Funeral Home, 25 Concord St., Peterborough, with a Mass at 11 a.m. in St. Patrick's Church, Bennington, N.H. Burial will be in the spring in Mount Calvary Cemetery, Bennington. A calling hour will be held from 9:30 to 10:30 a.m. Friday, March 9, in the funeral home. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Society for PSP Research, Woodholme Medical Building, Suite 515, 1838 Greentree Road, Baltimore, MD 21208.

Marian R. Polewaczyk

WORCESTER -- Marian R. (Wojciechowski) Polewaczyk, 89, of 21 Worth St., a former hospital kitchen worker, died Tuesday, Feb. 27, in Providence Extended Care Center.

Her husband of 27 years, Chester Polewaczyk, died in 1963. She leaves a son, Chester F. Polewaczyk of Holden; a daughter, Dolores Vigeant of Winchendon; a sister, Helen Richards of Worcester; five grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; nephews and nieces. A son, Ronald J. Polewaczyk of Holden, died in 1994. She was born in Worcester, daughter of Walter and Helen (Dembski) Wojciechowski. She graduated from St. Mary's School.

Mrs. Polewaczyk was a kitchen worker for St. Vincent Hospital before her retirement. She was a member of Our Lady of Czestochowa Church.

The funeral will be held Thursday, March 1, from Henry Funeral Home, 33 Ward St., with a Mass at 10:30 a.m. in Our Lady of Czestochowa Church, 34 Ward St. Burial will be in Notre Dame Cemetery. Calling hours are 5 to 8 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 28, in the funeral home. Orlo T. Reed, 85; retired custodian, Army veteran

WORCESTER -- Orlo T. “Babe” Reed, 85, of 25 Hyland Ave. in Leicester, formerly of Worcester, a World War II veteran and a retired custodian, died Tuesday, April 3, in the Jewish Healthcare Center after an illness.

He leaves his wife of 63 years, Helen B. (McGrath) Reed of Leicester; a son, Robert T. Reed of Grafton; a daughter, Mary A. Baribeault of Leicester; two sisters, Mary Canty and Frances O'Day, both of Worcester; 10 grandchildren; 16 great-grandchildren; nephews and nieces. A daughter, Frances Migneault, died in 1971. He was born in Holyoke, son of Orlo B. and Catherine (Donahue) Reed. He was an Army veteran of World War II.

Mr. Reed was a part owner of Ransford Pest Control, retiring in 1976. He later was the custodian for St. Andrew the Apostle Church, retiring in 1997. He was a member of St. Andrew the Apostle Church and its Men's Club.

The funeral will be held Friday, April 6, from Alfred Roy & Sons Funeral Home, 12 Hammond St., with a Mass at 10 a.m. in St. Andrew the Apostle Church, 5 Spaulding St. Burial will be in Notre Dame Cemetery. Calling hours are 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday, April 5, in the funeral home. John H. Schunke, 75

WORCESTER -- John H. Schunke, 75, of 34 Brookhaven Road, a maintenance engineer and a veteran of World War II, died Saturday, March 3, in the Odd Fellows Home.

He leaves his wife of 54 years, Bethany (Hirtle) Schunke; a daughter, Janet L. Rickards of Worcester; a brother, Edward O. Schunke of Charleston, S.C.; and two grandchildren. He was born in Worcester, son of Oscar E.G. and Edith (Somers) Schunke. He graduated from Auburn High School. He was an Army Air Corps veteran of World War II.

Mr. Schunke worked at G.E. Stimpson Co., retiring in 1983. He was previously an installer and maintenance engineer for Service Station Maintenance of Worcester for 25 years. He was a member of Zion Lutheran Church and Post 319 American Legion.

The funeral will be at 11 a.m. Thursday, March 8, in Nordgren, Carrigan, Mangsen Memorial Chapel, 300 Lincoln St. Burial will be in Worcester County Memorial Park, Paxton. Calling hours are 5 to 8 p.m. Wednesday, March 7, in the funeral home. Scott E. Soboleski, 31

WEBSTER -- Scott E. Soboleski, 31, of 25 Granite St., died Saturday, March 3, in Hubbard Regional Hospital in Webster.

He leaves his parents, Frank P. Soboleski Sr. of Spencer and Marilyn (Mayo) Perron of Webster; a brother, Frank Soboleski Jr. of Warren, three sisters, Rayanne Perron of Rutland, Nicole Cotti of Burbank, Calif., and Erica Perron of North Brookfield; his maternal grandmother, Cecile (Talbert) Mayo of North Brookfield; his step parents, Gini Soboleski of Spencer and Raymond Perron of North Brookfield; his fiancee, Julie Anne Donessoni of Webster; nieces and nephews. He was born in Ware, and lived in North Brookfield and two years in Gulfport, Fla. He moved to Webster in 1999.

The funeral service will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday, March 8, in the J. Henri Morin & Son Funeral Home, 23 Maple Terrace, Spencer. Burial will be in Walnut Grove Cemetery, North Brookfield, in the spring. Calling hours are private. Please omit flowers. Donations may be made to Webster Rescue Squad, 55 Thompson Road, Webster, MA 01570.
