Lemuel W. Tyre, 81

WORCESTER -- Lemuel W. Tyre, 81, of 15 Briarwood Circle, a World War II veteran and retired meat worker, died Friday, Jan. 26, in UMass Memorial Medical Center -- Memorial Campus.
He leaves his wife of 54 years, Martha (Anderson) Tyre; a son, Kenneth D. Tyre of Worcester; a daughter, Beverly J. Nystedt of Salem; a brother, Wilfred Tyre of Marianna, Fla.; two sisters, Lois Davis of St. Petersburg, Fla., and Algia Lee Neeley of Gainesville, Fla.; two grandsons; nephews and nieces. Five brothers and a sister predeceased him. He was born in Lulu, Fla., son of Lemuel W. Tyre Sr. and Essie (Crews) Tyre, and lived most of his life in Worcester. He graduated from Columbia High School in Lake City, Fla., and attended University of Florida, Gainesville.
He was an Army veteran of World War II, serving in Europe.
Mr. Tyre was a meat cutter 35 years for Chicago Dressed Beef Co. and then worked 15 years for Tatnuck Meat Market. He was an active member, usher and financial secretary of Salem Covenant Church. He was a member of Teamsters Union Local 170 Retirees.
A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Monday, Jan. 29, in Salem Covenant Church, 215 East Mountain St. Burial will be private in Worcester County Memorial Park, Paxton. There are no calling hours. Donations may be made to Salem Covenant Church Memorial Fund, 215 East Mountain St.; or to Briarwood Residence Assistance Fund, 70 Briarwood Circle, both Worcester, MA 01606. Efervita Vangel, 80

SOUTHBRIDGE -- Efervita Vangel, 80, of 21 Therese Ave., died Sunday, Feb. 4, in Harrington Memorial Hospital after an illness.
She leaves a sister, Sontisi Lavigne of Pensacola, Fla.; three nieces, Linda Connealy of Pensacola, Fla., Susan St. George of Southbridge, and Pamela Lahoie of Smyrna, Ga.; several grandnieces and grandnephews. She was born in Southbridge, daughter of Michael and Eva (Vasil) Vangel.
Miss Vangel worked more than 42 years at American Optical Co., retiring many years ago. She was a member of its Quarter Century Club.
The funeral services will be held at a later date. Burial will be at the convenience of the family in Oak Ridge Cemetery. There are no calling hours. Daniel T. Morrill Funeral Home, 130 Hamilton St., is directing arrangements.

MILLBURY -- Eugene C. Veinot III, 60, of Millbury, a retired printer, died Saturday, Feb. 3, in Sunbridge Care & Rehabilitation Center, Millbury.
He leaves his wife of three years, Barbara Ann (Bemis) Veinot; his mother, Lillian F. (Leslie) Veinot of Webster; three brothers, his twin, Gerald E. Veinot of Thompson, and James and Stephen Veinot, both in Florida; a sister, Susan Veinot of Worcester; nephews and nieces. He was born in Worcester, son of Euguene C. Veinot Jr., and attended Oxford and Auburn high schools.
Mr. Veinot was a graphic printer at Wachusett Molding Corp. for six years, retiring two months ago. He was a member of Greendale Peoples Church, and a former member of the Appalachian Mountain Club.
The funeral will be held at 2 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 6, in Caswell-King Funeral Home, 474 Grove St., Worcester. Burial will be private in Rural Cemetery. Veinot III, 60, of Millbury, who died Saturday, Feb. 3, in Sunbridge of Millbury, has been postponed to 1 to 2 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 6, in Caswell-King Funeral Home, 474 Grove St. The funeral service remains unchanged at 2 p.m. Tuesday in the funeral home. Burial will be private in Rural Cemetery.
Eugenia A. Wassel, 88

WORCESTER -- Eugenia A. (Brzezinski) Wassel, 88, of 17 Lodi St., a former housekeeper, died Wednesday, Jan. 31, in St. Vincent Hospital at Worcester Medical Center after an illness.
She leaves her husband of 62 years, Paul Wassel; three sons, Frederick P. and Daniel C. Wassel, both of Worcester, and Stephan P. Wassel of Arlington, Va.; a daughter, Eugenia P. Wassel of Worcester; a stepdaughter, Rose Carter of Charlton; three grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; a nephew and nieces. A brother, Edward Brzezinski, and a sister, Emily Horgan, predeceased her. She was born in Worcester, daughter of Szczepan and Maryanna (Rink) Brzezinski, and graduated from St. Mary's High School.
Mrs. Wassel was a housekeeper at St. John's Parish Rectory. Previously, she was a seamstress. She was a member of Our Lady of Czestochowa Parish.
The funeral will be held Saturday, Feb. 3, from Henry Funeral Home, 33 Ward St., with a Mass at 10:30 a.m. in Our Lady of Czestochowa Church, 34 Ward St. Burial will be in Notre Dame Cemetery. Calling hours are 5 to 8:30 p.m. Friday, Feb. 2, in the funeral home.

WESTMINSTER -- Viola M. (Skillings) Watt, 74, of 22 Notown Road, formerly of Still River and Rutland, died Monday, Jan. 29, in HealthAlliance Leominster Hospital after an illness.
She leaves her husband of 47 years, Clifford J. Watt; a son, James C. Watt of Shrewsbury; two daughters, Ellen J. Watt of Providence, R.I., and Janet M. Watt of Westminster; a brother, Leroy E. Skillings of Hollis, N.H.; a sister, Ruberta Jane Boudrot of Englewood, N.J.; nieces and nephews; grandnieces and grandnephews. She was born in Scarborough, Maine, daughter of Elmer B. and Winifred (Henderson) Skillings, and graduated from Thorton Academy in Saco, Maine. She lived 14 years in Westminster.
Mrs. Watt worked many years at the D.M. Watt & Sons Dairy Farm in Still River. She previously worked at the former Colonial Press Inc. in Clinton.
The funeral service will be held 11 a.m. Friday, Feb. 2, in First Church of Sterling, 6 Meeting House Hill Road, Sterling. Burial will be in Bellevue Cemetery, Harvard. Calling hours are from 5 to 8 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 1, in James E. Watson Funeral Home, 149 Water St., Clinton. PALMER -- Joseph J. Waz Jr., 54, of 2052 Main St., Three Rivers, a press operator, died Thursday, Jan. 25, in Wing Memorial Hospital after being stricken ill at work.
He leaves two sons, Daniel J. Waz of Ontario, Calif., and John M. Waz of Warren; a daughter, Kathy A. Waz of Warren; his mother, Rita (Chevrette) Waz of Ware; a brother, James Waz of West Brookfield; two sisters, Bertha Ann Harroun of Warren and Janice R. Carter of Morristown, Tenn.; and two grandsons. He was born in Ware, son of Joseph J. Waz Sr., and lived most of his life in West Warren and Warren before moving to Three Rivers. He graduated from Warren High School in 1964. He was a Marine Corps veteran of the Vietnam War, serving as a sergeant.
Mr. Waz was a press operator at Cascades Diamond Inc., Thorndike, where he worked 30 years.
The funeral will be held Monday, Jan. 29, from Cebula Funeral Home, 66 South St., Ware, with a Mass at 10 a.m. in St. Mary's Church, 60 South St., Ware. Spring burial will be in Pine Grove Cemetery, West Brookfield. Calling hours are 2 to 4 p.m. Sunday, Jan. 28, in the funeral home. SOUTHBRIDGE -- Creighton H. Wedge, 84, of 43 Bruce Lane, a longtime American Optical Co. employee, died Thursday, Jan. 25, at home, after an illness.
He leaves his wife of 55 years, Cora A. (Bullard) Wedge; a son, James C. Wedge of Sturbridge; a daughter, Nancy B. Allard of Southbridge; a half brother, Reginald Wedge of Starksboro, Vt.; and two grandsons. He was born in Barton, Vt., son of Earl and Doris (Sargent) Wedge, and lived many years in Southbridge.
Mr. Wedge worked 39 years for the American Optical Co. before his retirement, and belonged to the company's Quarter Century Club. He was a member of the Southbridge Senior Center, and was an avid fisherman.
The funeral will be held Monday, Jan. 29, from Daniel T. Morrill Funeral Home, 130 Hamilton St., with a Mass at 10 a.m. in St. Mary's Church, 263 Hamilton St. Burial will be in St. Mary's Cemetery. Daniel N. Weitzner, 82

LEOMINSTER -- Daniel N. Weitzner, 82, of 255 Prospect St., a retired military career man and a prisoner of war during World War II, died Wednesday, Jan. 31, in HealthAlliance Leominster Hospital after being stricken ill at home.
He leaves his wife of 49 years, Phyllis M. (Shaw) Weitzner; a son, James A. Weitzner of Chester, Va.; two daughters, Nancy E. Blood and Susan E. Weitzner, both of Leominster; two grandchildren; nephews and nieces. Three sisters and a brother predeceased him. He was born in New York City, son of Adolph and Rose (Finfer) Weitzner, and lived here since 1956. He graduated from Port Washington High School in Long Island, N.Y., attended Virginia Military Institute, and graduated from Fitchburg State College in 1977.
Mr. Weitzner served 26 years in the Army, retiring as a chief warrant officer in 1967. He served in the Medical Corps during World War II, and was a POW for three and a half years. He participated in the Bataan Death March during World War II, and also served during the Korean and Vietnam wars. After retiring, he worked in the blood bank at Leominster Hospital.
He was a member of Congregational Church of Christ, Wilder Lodge of Masons, Aleppo Temple, Fitchburg and Leominster Shrine Club, North Shore Animal Rescue League, American Association of Blood Bankers, Retired Officers Club at Hanscom Field, and the New England and National chapters of the Defenders of Bataan and Corregiodor.
The funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, Feb. 3, in Congregational Church of Christ, 583 Main St. Burial will be in Evergreen Cemetery. Calling hours are 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. Friday, Feb. 2, in Silas F. AUBURN -- Willis R. Whiting Sr., 81, of 414 Leicester St., a retired machinist, died Monday, Feb. 12, in UMass Memorial Medical Center -- Memorial Campus, Worcester.
He leaves his wife of 36 years, Ethel W. (Foley) Whiting; a son, Willis R. Whiting Jr. of Leicester; a daughter, Ellen I. Whiting of Auburn; two sisters, Ethel Aubuchont and Evelyn Miller, both of Auburn; two grandchildren; several nieces and nephews. His first wife, Helen (Jakubiak) Whiting, died in 1962. A sister, Ruth Miller of Auburn, and a half-sister, Lillian Gustavson of Providence, R.I., predeceased him. He was born in Belfast, Maine, son of Willard S. and Linnea (Soderlund) Whiting, and attended Auburn schools. He was a Navy veteran of World War II.
Mr. Whiting was a machinist 20 years at the Johnson Basset Co. and the Arter Grinding Co., both in Worcester, retiring several years ago.
He was a member of St. Joseph Church, and was a former member of the Auburn Senior Center. He enjoyed painting and woodworking.
The funeral service will be held at 10 a.m. Wednesday, Feb. 7, in Britton-Wallace Funeral Home, 91 Central St. Burial will be in Hillside Cemetery. A calling hour will be held from 9 to 10 a.m. Wednesday, Feb. 7, in the funeral home. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to a charity.

GRAFTON -- Adeline D. (Opatka) Wood, 76, of 285 Providence Road, died Saturday, Jan. 27, in Sunbridge Care and Rehabilitation of Worcester, after an illness.
Her husband, Henry J. Wood, died in 1975. She leaves a daughter, Diana M. Wood of South Grafton; nieces and nephews. She was born in Worcester, daughter of John and Josephine (Kielbasa) Opatka, and graduated from Worcester Girls Trade School.
Mrs. Wood was a seamstress many years at the former Wuskanut Mills Inc. in South Grafton.
She was a member of St. James Church in South Grafton.
The funeral will be held Wednesday, Jan. 31, from the Misiaszek Funeral Home, 124 Main St., South Grafton, with a Mass at 9 a.m. in St. James Church, 89 Main St., South Grafton. BELCHERTOWN -- Joseph F. Austin, 90, of West Street, died Tuesday, Feb. 6, in Wing Memorial Hospital, Palmer.
He leaves his wife of 55 years, Claire (Sullivan) Austin; two sons; four daughters, including Patricia E. Austin of Worcester; seven grandchildren; a great-grandson. He was a World War II Army Air Corps veteran.
Mr. Austin was a self-employed dairy farmer, and ran a construction company many years.
He was a draft horse enthusiast, and won awards and recognition for his teams at the Eastern States Exposition and other local fairs.
He was a member of St. Bartholomew's Church in Palmer.
A funeral with military honors will be held at 9:15 a.m. Saturday, Feb. 10, from Beers & Story Belchertown Funeral Home, 10 Maple St., with a Mass at 10:30 a.m. in St. Bartholomew's Church.
