Nathan Edward Cohen
Monday, February 5, 2001
OAKLAND, Calif. -- Nathan Edward Cohen, a New Hampshire native and social welfare expert who helped define the field and studied what caused the Watts riots, has died at 91.
Cohen died of heart failure Jan. 27 at his home, said his son, Edward Cohen.
The former dean of the school of social welfare at the University of California, Los Angeles, Nathan Cohen was a driving force behind a two-year study of the causes of the 1965 Watts riots. The study sought to explain the five-day unrest that left 34 people dead and more than 800 injured.
Results of the study were published in 1970 as, “The Los Angeles Riots: A Socio-Psychological Study,” with Cohen as editor.
Cohen, a founding member and first president of the National Association of Social Workers, was a pioneer in the effort to broaden the field by incorporating elements of the social sciences, sociology, political science and economics, said Leonard Schneiderman, a former dean of UCLA's social welfare school.
Born in Derry, N.H., in 1909, Cohen received a doctorate in experimental psychology from Harvard in 1934.
He received a Sheldon Fellowship to study in Italy during the 1930s, and it was there, his daughter said, that he watched the country turn to fascism under Mussolini. He went from the laboratory toward issues of social justice.
Cohen is survived by his wife, Sylvia; daughter, Susan, of Berkeley; two sons, David, of New York City, and Edward, of Loomis; 11 grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.
