HARDWICK -- Olive E. (Desjardins) Briand, 89, of 840 Hardwick Road, Gilbertville, a former Gilbertville Woven Label employee, died Saturday, Jan. 27, in Mary Lane Hospital, Ware.
Her husband of 25 years, Louis Briand, died in 1959. She leaves a son, Wesley Briand of Gilbertville; two daughters, JoAnn Kubaska of Gilbertville and Margaret Como of Bedford, N.H.; nine grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren. Born in Gilbertville, daughter of Charles and Elsie (Gosselin) Desjardins, she attended St. Anne Academy in Marlboro.
Mrs. Briand worked many years as a quiller for the Gilbertville Woven Label Co., retiring in 1976.
She was a member of St. Aloysius Church. She also belonged to the Gilbertville Golden Agers.
The funeral will be held Tuesday, Jan. 30, from the Charbonneau Funeral Home, 30 Pleasant St., Ware, with a Mass at 10 a.m. in St. Aloysius Church, Church Street. Burial will be in the parish cemetery. Calling hours are from 4 to 7 p.m. Monday, Jan. 29, in the funeral home.

GARDNER -- Kathryn (Loring) Brooks, 99, of 116 Church St., a former hospital worker, died Monday, Jan. 29, in Hillcrest Nursing Home, Fitchburg, after an illness.
Her husband, Henry W. “Harry” Brooks, died in 1933. She leaves a daughter, Elaine Boucher of Ledyard, Conn.; five grandchildren, several great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren. She was born in Templeton, daughter of Archie and Emma (Lucius) Loring, and lived most of her life in Gardner.
Mrs. Brooks was a laundry worker at Heywood Hospital.
The funeral service will be private in Smith Funeral Home, 69 Vernon St. Burial will be in Notre Dame Cemetery. There are no calling hours.
Marjorie A. Brown, 87

SOUTHBURY, Conn. -- Marjorie A. Brown, 87, of Heritage Village, formerly of Gardner, Mass., a retired librarian, died Wednesday, Jan. 31, in Waterbury Hospital, Waterbury.
She leaves nephews and nieces, including Joan Hodgson Kangas of Naples, Fla., and Richard C. Hodgson of Harwich Port; grandnephews and grandnieces. She was born and raised in Gardner, Mass., daughter of Charles A. and Alice (Hoadley) Brown. She graduated from Sea Pines Girls Academy on Cape Cod, Mass., and Hiram College in Hiram, Ohio. She earned a master's degree in library science from Western Reserve University in Ohio.
Ms. Brown was a librarian at Boston Public Library before retiring. She enjoyed traveling, genealogy and reading, and was active in alumnae activities at Hiram College. She wrote poetry and two novels.
The memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Friday, Feb. 9, in United Church of Christ, 283 Main St. Burial will be at noon Thursday, Feb. 8, in Green Bower Cemetery, Gardner. CONCORD, Calif. -- The memorial Mass for William J. Brunelle, 55, of Concord, will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday, Feb. 3, in St. Joseph's Church, Hamilton Street, Worcester, Mass. Mr. Brunelle died Wednesday, Jan. 3, in John Muir Medical Center, Walnut Creek.
He leaves his wife of 32 years, Marilyn Brunelle; two daughters; his mother, Rita Brunelle of Worcester; and a brother. He served in the Army.
Mr. Brunelle was a sales manager for Saputo Cheese USA. He was a member of St. Bonaventure Church, the Clayton Valley Veterans of Foreign Wars and the Boston College Alumni Association.

Miriam A. A. Bryant, 92

WORCESTER -- Miriam A. (Hall) Anderson Bryant, 92, of 25 Harley Drive, died Sunday, Jan. 28, in Salisbury Nursing and Rehabilitation Center.
She leaves a son, Herbert T. Anderson of Shrewsbury. Her first husband, David T. Anderson, died in 1969. Her second husband, Frederick G. Bryant, died in 1988. She was born in Worcester, daughter of John B. and Lucy E. (Russell) Hall, and attended Worcester schools.
Mrs. Bryant was a salesclerk for many years at the former American Supply Co., retiring many years ago.
The private funeral service will be held at noon Wednesday, Jan. 31, in Nordgren, Carrigan, Mangsen Memorial Chapel, 300 Lincoln St. Burial will be in All Faiths Cemetery. There are no calling hours. Donations may be made to a charity.
Evelyn Budniewski, 78

LAKELAND, Fla. -- Evelyn V. (Carlson) Budniewski, 78, of Fountain View Estate, formerly of Holland, Mass., and Sturbridge, Mass., a retired flower shop worker, died Monday, Jan. 29, in Lakeland Regional Medical Center.
She leaves two sisters, Mildred Lawrence of Pomfret Center, Conn., and Elin Anderson of Dudley, Mass.; nephews and nieces. A sister, Cecelia E. Carlson, died in 1998. A brother, Herbert G. Carlson, died in 1990. She was born in Sturbridge, daughter of Gabriel and Carolina (Hendrickson) Carlson, and moved to Florida 15 years ago.
Mrs. Budniewski was an office manager and bookkeeper for First New England Securities in Southbridge, Mass., and later for Tarbell Associates in East Longmeadow, Mass. She was a secretary at United Church of Christ in Framingham, Mass., and a waitress at the Publick House, Sturbridge. In Florida, she was a designer for Debbie's Flower Shop. After retiring, she did watercolor paintings, many of which she sold. She enjoyed the outdoors and flower gardening.
The memorial service will be held at 7 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 8, in the Club House at Fountain View Estates, Lakeland. A committal service will be held in the spring in South Cemetery, Pomfret. MALDEN -- Florence (Carr) Burns, 80, of Malden, a former funeral home owner and operator, died Wednesday, Jan. 24, at home after a brief illness.
Her husband, Richard R. Burns, predeceased her. She leaves two daughters, including Nancy Owens of Holden; a son; a sister; six granddaughters; nephews and nieces. A brother predeceased her. She was born in Medford.
Mrs. Burns served as the first woman in many capacities, including the first woman licensed as a funeral director in Malden. She owned and operated E.E. Burns and Son Funeral Home since 1964. She was active in professional and civic organizations. In 1994, the Zonta Club of Malden honored her as “Woman of the Decade.”
The funeral will be held at 9:30 a.m. Monday, Jan. 29, from E.E. Burns and Son Funeral Home, 204 Main St., with a Mass at 11 a.m. in Church of the Sacred Hearts, 297 Main St. Burial will be in Holy Cross Cemetery. DUNEDIN, Fla. -- Paul E. Butler, 97, of Dunedin, formerly of Newton, Mass., and Worcester, Mass., died Thursday, Jan. 25, in Dunedin.
He leaves a daughter, Julia Pearson of Lexington, Mass.; and three grandchildren. He lived in Newton and Worcester before moving to Florida in 1994.
Mr. Butler was a carpenter and cabinet maker before retiring. He was a member of Pleasant Street Baptist Church, Worcester.
A memorial service will be held in Dunedin. A graveside service will be held at a later date in Newton. There are no calling hours. SEBASTIAN, Fla. -- James P. Butler, 44, of Sebastian, formerly of Worcester, Mass., a truck driver and former business owner and operator, died Saturday, Feb. 3, in Indian River Memorial Hospital after a long illness.
He leaves his wife, Cathy (Mott) Butler; a son, James P. Butler Jr. of Webster, Mass.; his father, John Butler of Niceville; his mother, Doris Rogers of Sebastian; a brother, Bob Butler of Norwalk, Conn.; and five sisters, Donna Carrigg of Niceville, Linda Kemp of Oxford, Mass., Lorraine Pasqualetti of the North Grosvenordale section of Thompson, Conn., Phyllis Butler and Debbie Cummings, both of Sebastian. A brother, John Butler of Cranston, R.I., predeceased him. He was born in Natick, Mass., and lived in Worcester before moving to Sebastian five years ago.
Mr. Butler was a truck driver and formerly owned and operated Butler Janitorial. He volunteered at Indian River Correctional Institute and received the volunteer of the year award for four consecutive years.

Bernard J. Byrne Jr., 87

CLINTON -- Bernard J. Byrne Jr., 87, of 330 Main St., formerly of Dorchester, died Saturday, Jan. 3, in Clinton Hospital, after an illness.
His wife, Alice D. (Grady) McCarty Byrne, died in 1985. He leaves two stepdaughters, Betty A. McNally of Clinton and Nancy D. Moran of Lancaster; nine grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren; two great-great-grandchildren; nieces and nephews. Three sisters predeceased him. He was born in Middleboro, son of Bernard J. Byrne Sr. and Rose (Benjamin) Byrne. He lived 36 years in Clinton. He was an Army Air Corps veteran of World War II, serving in Europe and North Africa. He later served three years in the National Guard.
Mr. Byrne was a typesetter at Riverside Press in Cambridge for 33 years, and then worked 20 years at the former Industrial School for Girls in Lancaster before retiring. He was a member of the Knights of Columbus, was an avid reader and enjoyed fishing.
The funeral will be held Tuesday, Feb. 6, from James E. Watson Funeral Home, 149 Water St., with a Mass at 11:30 a.m. in St. John the Evangelist Church, 80 Union St. Burial will be in St. John Cemetery, Lancaster. Calling hours are 6 to 8 p.m. Monday, Feb. 5, in the funeral home. She leaves a sister, Valerie Stetson of Worcester; her maternal grandparents, Joseph Brown of Worcester and Joy Benshiek of Timberville, Va.; her paternal grandparents, Gustavo Cancel Arroyo and Anabel Casiano Santos, both of Puerto Rico; several aunts and uncles.

GARDNER -- Rene R. Carbonneau, 68, of 63 Union St., a retired chief products designer, died Thursday, Jan. 25, in Heywood Hospital after an illness.
He leaves his wife of 46 years, Barbara (Rotti) Carbonneau; two sons, Steven J. Carbonneau of Gardner and Brian W. Carbonneau of Leominster; a daughter, Linda J. Deckert of Gardner; two sisters, Charlene Halpin and Sylvia Mayer, both of Fitchburg; three grandchildren; nephews and nieces. A daughter, Cheryl McDowell of Crescent City, Fla., died in 1996. A brother, Aime Carbonneau of Fitchburg, died in 1987. He was born and raised in Fitchburg, son of Aime and Henrietta (Loiselle) Carbonneau, and lived more than 30 years in Westminster and Gardner. He was an Army veteran of the Korean War.
Mr. Carbonneau was a chief product designer more than 30 years for Ray Plastics-Mylec, Winchendon, retiring in 1994.
He was a former member of St. Edward the Confessor Church, Westminster, and a former longtime member of St. Francis of Assisi Church, Fitchburg. He enjoyed collecting die-cast firetrucks.
The funeral will be held Tuesday, Jan. 30, from Lavery-Chartrand Funeral Home, 99 Summer St., Fitchburg, with a Mass at 10 a.m. in St. Francis of Assisi Church, 81 Sheridan St., Fitchburg. Burial will be at the family's convenience in St. Joseph's Cemetery, Fitchburg. Calling hours are 6 to 8 p.m. Monday, Jan. 29, in the funeral home.
