Robert L. Zdonczyk, 64

WORCESTER -- Robert L. “Cisco” Zdonczyk, 64, of 24 Kenberma Road, a retired mail room foreman, died Wednesday, Aug. 9, in UMass Memorial Medical Center -- University Campus.

He leaves his wife, Jeannette G. (Moore) Zdonzcyk; three sons, Robert M. Zdonczyk of Webster, John E. and Michael D. Zdonczyk, both of Worcester; a daughter, Patricia J. Mahoney of Worcester; two sisters, Carole A. Jackson of Merrimack, N.H., and Helen J. Winter of Worcester; seven grandchildren; nephews and nieces. He was born in Worcester, son of John S. and Mary M. (Jendza) Zdonczyk, and was a Navy veteran.

Mr. Zdonczyk was employed in various capacities in the Worcester Telegram & Gazette mail room for 47 years, retiring from the position of nightside foreman in January.

He was a member of Our Lady of Czestochowa Church and the Vernon Hill Post American Legion, and was a former member of the Pope John Knights of Columbus.

The funeral will be held Saturday, Aug. 12, from Mulhane Home for Funerals, 45 Main St., Millbury, with a Mass at 9 a.m. in Our Lady of Czestochowa Church, 34 Ward St. Burial will be in Central Cemetery, Millbury. Calling hours are 6 to 9 p.m. Friday, Aug. 11, in the funeral home. Flowers may be sent, or memorial donations made to a charity.

Victoria A. Zykowski

Tuesday, August 8, 2000

MILLBURY -- Victoria A. (Pokropowicz) Zykowski, 86, of 91 McCracken Road, died Sunday, Aug. 6, in Providence House of Millbury after an illness.

Her husband, Henry Zykowski, died in 1963. She leaves a daughter, Natalie A. Chiaravalloti of Millbury; a brother, Henry S. Marc of Auburn; two grandchildren; a great grandson. Four brothers, John Parker, Oswald Pokropowicz, Thaddeus Parker, and Anthony Marc, died before her. She was the daughter of Stanley and Loretta (Chelenski) Pokropowicz, and was a longtime resident of Millbury.

Mrs. Zykowski was a seamstress for many years.

She was a member of Our Lady of Czestochowa Church, Worcester. At one time, she sang in the church choir and was a former member of the Women's Guild.

The funeral service and burial will be private. There are no calling hours. Henry Funeral Home, 33 Ward St., Worcester, is directing arrangements.

Cecile L. Dion, 84

WORCESTER -- Cecile L. (Faford) Dion, 84, of 10 Cuba Road, died Saturday, Jan. 27, in Fairlawn Rehabilitation Hospital. Rice Funeral Home, 300 Park Ave., is directing funeral arrangements, which are incomplete.

Helen C. Kozlowski, 83

WORCESTER -- Helen C. Kozlowski, 83, of 229 Cohasset St., died Monday, Jan. 22, in Blaire House of Worcester.

She leaves her sister, Irene E. Allard of Worcester; nephews and nieces, grandnephews and grandnieces. She was born in Worcester, daughter of John and Josephine (Chmielewski) Kozlowski.

Miss Kozlowski was a housemother 15 years for the former Worcester City Hospital School of Nursing, retiring in 1982. She was previously a seamstress many years for the Worcester Knitting Co.

Calling hours are from 7 to 9 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 23, in Morin Funeral Home, 298 Grafton St. Burial will be private in Notre Dame Cemetery.

Walter J. Martin, 82

Wednesday, April 11, 2001

WORCESTER -- Walter J. Martin, 82, of 30 Wyola Drive, a retired postal clerk and a veteran of World War II, died Monday, April 9, in UMass Memorial Medical Center -- Memorial Campus, after an illness.

His wife of 42 years, Eleanor J. (Johnson) Martin, died in 1989. He leaves two sons, David J. Martin of Westboro and James P. Martin of Columbia, Md.; three daughters, Joan M. Fanning and Janice M. White, both of Worcester, and Patricia J. Wiser of North Grafton; two sisters, Claire Crowe of Worcester and Doris Barrett of Scituate; nine grandchildren; and several nephews and nieces. A brother, Francis W. Martin of West Yarmouth, died in 1997. He was born in Worcester, son of William and Helena (Foley) Martin, and graduated from Commerce High School. He was an Army Air Forces veteran of World War II, serving in the South Pacific.

Mr. Martin was a postal clerk for more than 30 years, retiring in 1981. He previously worked at U.S. Steel. He was a member of Our Lady of the Angels Church, the Greendale Retired Men's Club and the Disabled American Veterans.

The funeral will be held Thursday, April 12, from O'Connor Brothers Funeral Home, 592 Park Ave., with a Liturgy of the Word service at 10 a.m. in Our Lady of the Angels Church, 1222 Main St. Burial will be in Worcester County Memorial Park, Paxton. Calling hours are 4 to 8 p.m. Wednesday, April 11, in the funeral home. Memorial contributions may be made to any charity.

Pauline S. Sarrasin, 68

SOUTHBRIDGE -- Pauline S. (Huet) Sarrasin, 68, of 240 Hamilton St., a former medical secretary, died Friday, Oct. 6, in UMass Memorial Medical Center -- University Campus, Worcester, after a long illness.

She leaves her husband of 46 years, Donald E. Sarrasin; a son, Donald P. Sarrasin of Southbridge; two daughters, Donna Joyce and Paulette Delage, both of Southbridge; three grandchildren; a half-brother, Richard Benoit of Southbridge; a half-sister, Michelle Zacek of Spencer; nephews and nieces. A half-brother, Dennis Benoit of the Jamaica Plain section of Boston, predeceased her. She was born in Southbridge, daughter of Cyril Huet and Sarah (Tougas) Huet Benoit, and graduated from Mary E. Wells High School in 1951.

Mrs. Sarrasin was a medical secretary at Harrington Memorial Hospital. She previously worked at Russell Harrington Cutlery Co., F.W. Woolworth, E.D. Desrosier Insurance Co., Hippodrome Lanes, and for the Worcester County newspapers, Auburn.

She was a member of Notre Dame Church and the Franco-American Ladies Auxiliary, and volunteered for the Heart Fund campaign of the American Heart Association. She studied and played classical piano, and enjoyed bowling and fishing.

The funeral will be held Monday, Oct. 9, from Sansoucy Funeral Home, 40 Marcy St., with a Mass at 10 a.m. in Notre Dame Church, 446 Main St. Burial will be in Oak Ridge Cemetery. Calling hours are 5 to 8 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 8, in the funeral home. Memorial donations may be made to Notre Dame Church Restoration Fund, 61 Marcy St., Southbridge, MA 01550.

Wanda Stevens, 79

WORCESTER -- Wanda (Rzucidlo) Stevens, 79, of 69 Seymour St., died Tuesday, Oct. 3, in St. Vincent Hospital at Worcester Medical Center after an illness.

She leaves a daughter, Judith Piscione, with whom she lived; a brother, Thaddeus Rzucidlo of Westwood; a grandson; nieces and a nephew. She was born in Newburyport, daughter of Lawrence and Hedwig Rzucidlo.

Mrs. Stevens was a certified nurse's aide for 25 years, retiring in 1986.

A memorial Mass will be at 7:30 a.m. Thursday, Oct. 5, in Our Lady of Czestochowa Church, 34 Ward St. After cremation, burial will be private. There are no calling hours. Graham Putnam & Mahoney Funeral Parlors, 838 Main St., is directing arrangements.

Louis H. Therrien, 83

GARDNER -- Louis H. Therrien, 83, of 125 Connors St., formerly of 92 Park St., a retired milkman, died Wednesday, May 2, in Heywood Hospital after an illness.

He leaves his wife of 59 years, Mathilda M. (Boudreau) Therrien; three daughters, Janet M. Miller of Marlboro, Jane M. Cornett of Gardner and Claire A. LeBlanc of Phoenix; a brother, Felix Therrien of Westminster; two sisters, Emma Morlock of South Yarmouth and Louise Favreau of Gardner; five grandchildren; nephews and nieces. He was born in Gardner, son of Alphonse and Herminie (Perreault) Therrien.

Mr. Therrien was a milkman 30 years for Gardner Creamery, retiring in 1980. He was also a provisional firefighter for the City of Gardner. He was a member of Our Lady of the Holy Rosary Church, its League of Sacred Heart Society, the Gardner Golden Agers, and American Legion Post 129. He enjoyed baseball.

The funeral will be held Saturday, May 5, from Boucher Funeral Home Inc., 110 Nichols St., with a Mass at 11:30 a.m. in Our Lady of the Holy Rosary Church, 135 Nichols St. Calling hours are 9 to 11 a.m. Saturday, May 5, in the funeral home. Memorial donations may be made to Holy Rosary School, 135 Nichols St., Gardner, MA 01440; or to Alzheimer's Association of Eastern Massachusetts, 36 Cameron St., Cambridge, MA 02140.

Walter A. Dudek Jr., 44

NORTH GROSVENORDALE -- Walter A. Dudek Jr., 44, postmaster of the Thompson Post Office for the last 6 years, died Monday, Oct. 9, at his home at 1093 Riverside Drive, from injuries sustained earlier in an accident.

He leaves his wife, Diane M. Morin Dudek; a daughter, Jennifer Dudek of North Grosvenordale; his mother, Stasia (Krawiec) Dudek of Putnam; a sister, Leona Archambault of North Grosvenordale; a half brother, Richard Ballard of East Killingly, Connecticut; and a half sister, Patricia Chrabaszcz of East Thompson. He was born in Putnam, son of Walter A. Dudek, Sr. He graduated from Putnam High School in 1975, and served in the Air Force.

Mr. Ducek worked for the Postal Service, starting out as a postal clerk at the North Grosvenordale Post Office. He was appointed to the rank of Postmaster in 1988 and served as Postmaster of the Ballouville, Rogers and North Widham post offices, before becoming Postmaster in Thompson. He was active in many sports activities. He was a longtime bowler, played softball and often served as an umpire in the Thompson league, as well as in the Killingly Recreation Department. He was an avid golfer, maintaining a membership at Quinnatisset Country Club. He was a member of Saint Joseph Church, North Grosvenordale.

He was a member of the National League of Postmasters and a former member of the Thompson Lions Club, where he served two terms as President. He was a longtime member of the Community Fire Co. and, in March of this year, was elected to the office of President of the fire company.

The funeral will be held at 10:15 a.m. Friday, Oct. 13, from the Valade Funeral Home, 23 Main St., with a funeral Mass at 11 a.m. in Saint Joseph Church, 18 Main St. Burial will be in Saint Joseph Cemetery. Calling hours will be from 5 to 9 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 12, in the funeral Home. Memorial donations may be made to the Community Fire Co., Riverside Drive, North Grosvenordale, CT 06255.

Elizabeth A. Hammond

FITCHBURG -- Elizabeth A. (Desmond) Hammond, 82, of 210 South St., died Wednesday, Oct. 11, in Deaconess-Nashoba Hospital, Ayer, after a long illness.

Her husband of 51 years, James J. Hammond Sr., died in 1997. She leaves three sons, James J. Hammond Jr. of Fitchburg, John F. Hammond of Medway, and Jeffrey P. Hammond, with whom she lived; a daughter, Judith P. Moodie of Littleton; a sister, JoAnne Deneen of Fitchburg; four grandchildren; nieces and nephews; grandnieces and grandnephews. A brother, Jack Desmond, predeceased her. She was born in Fitchburg, daughter of John F. and Loretta (Farrell) Desmond, and graduated from St. Bernard's High School.

Mrs. Hammond worked for Jennison Co. before her marriage.

She was a lifelong member of St. Bernard's Church and a former member of its choir; a former member of the Faculty Wives of Fitchburg State College, and of the Marian Guild; a volunteer in the library at St. Bernard's Elementary School, and at Our Father's House; and a collector for the Propagation of the Faith.

The funeral will be held Saturday, Oct. 14, from Smith-Mallahy-Masciarelli Funeral Home, 243 Water St., with a Mass at 10 a.m. in St. Bernard's Church, 240 Water St. Calling hours are 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. Friday, Oct. 13, in the funeral home. Burial will be in St. Bernard's Cemetery. Memorial donations may be made to St. Bernard's Parish Renovation Fund, 240 Water St., Fitchburg, MA 01420.

David F. Gould, 87

BOCA RATON, Fla. -- David F. Gould, 87, of 19584 Planters Point Drive, formerly of 5 Suburban Road, Worcester, Mass., co-founder of Big D supermarkets, died in Metro West Hospital, Framingham, Mass., after a long illness.

He leaves his wife of three years, Elaine (Levy) Kaplan Gould; a daughter, Ellen Gould Ray of New York City; a brother, Harold Gould of Florida; many nieces and nephews; grandnieces and grandnephews. His first wife of 60 years, Sarah (Chafitz) Gould, died in 1997. A daughter, Paula D. Gould, a son, Michael A. Gould, and two brothers, William and Calvin Gould, also predeceased him. He was born in Brooklyn, New York, son of Nathan and Anna (Levy) Gould and lived in Clinton, Mass., before moving to Worcester 82 years ago. He graduated from Northeastern University, Boston. Many years ago, he moved to Delray Beach and, three years ago, to Boca Raton.

Along with his father, Mr. Gould founded Wonder Market Co. and, soon after, he partnered with his three brothers. The supermarket went on to become the Big Discount chain.

Mr. Gould was a member of Temple Emanuel, Worcester, and a past president of its brotherhood. He was past president of Worcester Jewish Federation, the Jewish Family Service, Worcester, and Mount Pleasant Country Club, Boylston, Mass. He and his wife established the Sarah and David Gould Music Fund at Temple Emanuel, as well as college scholarships through Temple Emanuel. He was a life member of the board of directors of Yeshiva Achei Timimim, Worcester. He was a member of Worcester Lodge 600 of B'nai B'rith, and was a contributing member of the Jewish Healthcare Center, Worcester. Devoted to the community, he was active in the United Way and established a foundation to rebuild city playgrounds.

The funeral service will be held at 2 p.m. Monday, July 23, in Perlman Funeral Home, 1026 Main St., Worcester. Burial will be in B'nail B'rith Cemetery, Worcester. Memorial observance will be held in the Sisterhood Room of Temple Emanuel, 280 May St., Worcester, the afternoon of Monday, July 23, until 8 p.m., and from 2 to 6 p.m. Tuesday, July 24. Memorial donations may be made to Temple Emanuel, 280 May St., or Yeshiva Achei Timimim, 22 Newton Ave., both Worcester, MA 01602.

GRAFTON -- The funeral for Raymond R. Bastarache, 55, of 5 Bedford Drive, North Grafton, will be held at 10 a.m. Monday, Oct. 23, from Robert C. Roney Funeral Home, 152 Worcester St., North Grafton, with a Mass at 11 a.m. in St. Mary's Church, 17 Waterville St., North Grafton. Mr. Bastarache died at home Wednesday, Oct. 18, after being stricken ill. Burial will be in Pine Grove Cemetery, North Grafton. Calling hours are 5 to 8 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 22, in the funeral home.

He leaves his wife of 18 years, Barbara A. (Morrow) Bastarache; a daughter, Tasha M. Till of Deltona, Fla.; two sisters, Marie Speer of Orlando, Fla., and Jeannine Peloquin of Cape Neddick, Maine; two grandchildren; nephews and nieces. He was born in Sanford, Maine, son of Frank and Beatrice (Gould) Bastarache, and lived 20 years in North Grafton. He graduated from St. John's University in Canada.

Mr. Bastarache was a computer technician at Cytyc Corporation, Boxboro. He previously worked 15 years at Quantum Corp. of Digital Computer Corp., Shrewsbury. He was a member of St. Mary's Church, North Grafton, and enjoyed reading and music.

Doris W. Bohanan, 78

Saturday, October 21, 2000

SUTTON -- Doris W. (Carpenter) Bohanan, 78, of 19 Dewitt Road, a registered nurse, died Thursday, Oct. 19, at home after being stricken ill.

She leaves a son, David R. Bohanan of Sutton; two sisters, Marjorie C. Juba of Clearwater, Fla., and Jean M. Ackerman of the Feeding Hills section of Agawam; three grandchildren; nephews and nieces. A son, James R. Bohanan of Sutton, died in 1993. A brother, Richard E. Carpenter of Westboro, also predeceased her. She was born in Worcester, daughter of Benjamin and Ethel (White) Carpenter, and moved to Sutton in 1947. She graduated from Commerce High School, Worcester, in 1940 and from Worcester City Hospital School of Nursing in 1947.

Mrs. Bohanan was a registered nurse at Worcester State Hospital, Worcester, from 1947 to 1956 and then again from 1965 to 1971. She previously was a secretary for seven years at Norton Co., Worcester, and was the public health nurse for the town of Sutton from 1956 to 1965.

She was a former member of Wesley United Methodist Church, Worcester. She was a member of Worcester City Hospital Alumni Association and the Massachusetts State Nurses Association.

The funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Monday, Oct. 23, in Mulhane Home for Funerals, 45 Main St., Millbury. Burial will be in West Sutton Cemetery. Calling hours are 2 to 6 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 22, at the funeral home. Memorial donations may be made to Doris W. Bohanan Scholarship Fund, c/o Millbury Federal Credit Union, 50 Main St., Millbury, MA 01527.
