Maureen O'Sullivan, Tarzan movie star

Wednesday, June 24, 1998

PHOENIX -- Actress Maureen O'Sullivan, the Irish-born beauty who starred as Jane in a string of Tarzan films, has died at age 87.

Miss O'Sullivan, whose seven children include actress Mia Farrow, died Monday night at Scottsdale Memorial Hospital in suburban Phoenix, hospital spokeswoman Felicia Thomas said yesterday.

Thomas said she didn't know the cause. A daughter, Stephanie Farrow of New York City, also confirmed O'Sullivan's death to The Associated Press. She declined to elaborate, but said she thought her mother died of old age.

Her first appearance as the scantily clad Jane to Johnny Weissmuller's Tarzan was in “Tarzan the Ape Man,” 1932. Other films in the MGM jungle adventure series include “Tarzan and his Mate,” 1934; and “Tarzan's Secret Treasure,” 1941.

But she also appeared in more prestigious productions, including “Anna Karenina,” 1935; “Cardinal Richelieu,” 1935; “Pride and Prejudice,” 1940; and “The Big Clock,” 1948, which was directed by her husband, screenwriter and director John Farrow. She was in the first of the popular “Thin Man” movies that starred William Powell and Myrna Loy and played the lead of the romantic subplot in the Marx Brothers' classic “A Day at the Races,” 1937.

“The world lost a lovely leading lady,” Bob Hope said in a statement.

For many of her fans, the Tarzan movies were the most memorable. In a 1997 Associated Press interview, she recalled meeting Edgar Rice Burroughs, author of the Tarzan books.

“Burroughs was a nice guy,” she recalled. “He asked me if I had read any Tarzan books, and I had to say no. I had barely heard of Tarzan. He sent me a copy of every one of his books.

“He thought Johnny and I were the perfect Tarzan and Jane, which is lovely.”

In 1985, she appeared along with daughter Mia in Woody Allen's “Hannah and Her Sisters,” playing the mother of her daughter's character. In 1992, when the breakup of Farrow's long romance with Allen made the headlines, O'Sullivan denounced Allen as a “desperate and evil man.”

Other notable late film appearances were in “Never Too Late” (a role she had originated on stage), 1965, and “Peggy Sue Got married,” 1986.

She also was active in Broadway and touring theater productions in the 1960s and '70s, was briefly a regular on the “Today” show in 1964, and acted in television shows such as “The Guiding Light,” 1984, and “The Great Houdinis,” 1976.

O'Sullivan was born May 17, 1911, in Boyle, Ireland. When she was discovered by director Frank Borsage she was 18 and had no training in acting. He directed her in her first film, “Song O' My Heart.”

married in 1936, she and Farrow had their first child, Michael, four years later, and had seven children together. Michael was killed in an airplane collision in 1958. Her husband died in 1963.

O'Sullivan attributed her ability to combine motherhood with a career in movies and television to her ability to concentrate.

“I seem to have one-track mind,” she said. “When I was having babies, I did nothing else. When I do pictures, I go all out.”

“I really think it is easier to manage my seven,” she said. “You can't afford to humor each one of them. They have to learn to do things when they are told.”

Her children enjoyed her career, she said, because “they like to have me come home and tell them what Bob Hope said, and so forth. It makes their mother seem a little more exciting.”
