Loretta St. Germain, 95

WORCESTER -- Loretta M. (Coffey) St. Germain, 95, a registered nurse, of 450 Sunderland Road, died Monday at home after a long illness.
Her husband, Eugene W. St. Germain, died in 1960. She leaves five sons, John A. St. Germain of Oxford, Robert C. St. Germain of Auburn, Eugene W. St. Germain, James A. St. Germain and William R. St. Germain, all of Worcester; a daughter, Mary Stellato of Mattapoisett, Mass.; 15 grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren; nephews and nieces. She was born in Norton, Mass. the daughter of James H. and Nora (O'Neal) Coffey. She was raised in Woonsocket, R.I., and then lived in Milford before moving to Worcester 60 years ago. She graduated from the Woonsocket, R.I. School of Nursing and she trained on the Boston Floating Hospital.
Mrs. St. Germain was a registered nurse for the State of Rhode Island Department of Health, she retired in 1932. She also worked as a district nurse for the city of Woonsocket for several years.
She was a founding member of Our Lady of Lourdes Church and was a parish representative. She taught in the Confraternity of Christian Doctrine program for many years. She was also a president of the Roosevelt School Parent-Teacher Association.
The funeral Mass was held yesterday from Robert C. Roney-Grafton Funeral Home, 152 Worcester St. Burial was in St. John's Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Worcester VNA Hospice, 120 Thomas St., Worcester, MA 01608.
Robert F. Gettens, 68

WORCESTER -- Robert F. Gettens, 68, formerly of Worcester, Navy veteran of the Korean War, died Monday in Life Care Center of Auburn after a long illness.
He leaves no immediate family in the area. He was born in Leominster, son of George F. and Helen (Campbell) Gettens, and lived here many years. He graduated from Leominster High School and attended Cheshire Academy in Connecticut. He graduated from St. Michael's College in Vermont. He was a Navy veteran of the Korean War.
Mr. Gettens was a job counselor for the State Employment Service.
A private funeral service and burial will be held at the family's convenience. There are no calling hours. Memorial contributions may be made to a Catholic charity. Kelly funeral Home, 154 Lincoln St., is directing arrangements.
Thomas J. Smith, 68

SOUTHBRIDGE -- Thomas J. Smith, 68, of Lebanon St., died Sunday, March 5, in Harrington Memorial Hospital after a long illness.
He leaves his wife of 46 years, Dorothy (Greene) Smith; two sons, David Smith of Naples, Fla., James Smith of Southbridge; four daughters, Donna Merenda of Tewksbury, Dorothy Dionne of Charlton, Elizabeth Burlingame of Holland, and Patricia Lizotte of Southbridge; a brother, Raymond W. Smith of Vernon, Conn.; three sisters, Rita LaPointe of Laconia, N.H., Irene Lattanzio of Cromwell, Conn., and Louise Smith of Plainville, Conn.; four grandchildren; several nephews and nieces. He was born in Hartford, Conn., son of Raymond and Gertrude (Lawler) Smith, and lived in Southbridge and Holland for many years.
He was a school bus driver for the town of Sturbridge and a member of St. Anne's Church in Fiskdale.
The funeral service will be private. Burial will be in St. Anne's Cemetery. There are no calling hours. Donations may be made to American Diabetes Association, PO Box 31160, Hartford, CT 06150-1160.
Ralph W. Gilbert, 94

STURBRIDGE -- Ralph W. Gilbert, 94, of 214 Hemlock Path, a college teacher for many years, died Sunday in Harrington Memorial Hospital, Southbridge, after an illness.
His wife, Mary P. (Murdock) Gilbert, died in 1985. He leaves a son, R. Westly Gilbert of Sturbridge, with whom he lived; a daughter, Cynthia Kennison of New Braintree; four grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren. He was born in Passaic, N.J., son of William and Mary Helen (Lucie) Gilbert, and was raised in Leominster. He lived 59 years on Long Island, N.Y., before he moved here in 1990. He graduated from Clark University in Worcester and earned a master's degree and a doctoral degree in psychology.
Mr. Gilbert taught at Washington Square College in New York City for 41 years, retiring in 1968. After World War II, he taught physics to GIs at New York University.
Mr. Gilbert was a member of the Brookfield Unitarian Universalist Church. He was active for many years in elder affairs on Long Island. He was a skilled violin player and tuned pianos.
Mr. Gilbert was co-author of a the book, “Recent Experiments in Psychology.”

Helen Gogonis, 74

SOUTHBRIDGE -- Helen (Kalis) Gogonis, 74, of 55 Lens St., a former bakery worker, died yesterday in Harrington Memorial Hospital.
Her husband, Angelo Gogonis, died in 1974. She leaves a son, Stephen Gogonis of Northboro; a daughter, Connie Gogonis of Southbridge; a brother, Theodore Kalis of Sturbridge; a grandson; nephews and nieces. She was born in Southbridge, daughter of Theopanis and Antigone (Tzoumba) Kalis.
Mrs. Gogonis worked in the family business, Puritan Bakery, for many years. She was a member of St. George Greek Orthodox Church.
The funeral will be held tomorrow from Daniel T. Morrill Funeral Home, 130 Hamilton St., with a service at 10 a.m. in St. George Greek Orthodox Church, 50 North St. Burial will be in Oak Ridge Cemetery. George T. Grudoff, 64

GRAFTON -- George T. Grudoff, 64, of 6A Zgonis Dr., Green Acres Estates, South Grafton, died Tuesday after suffering a heart attack while playing golf.
He leaves a son, Kenneth Grudoff; a daughter, Lisa Grudoff, both of Worcester; three sisters, Seena LaRue, Donna L. Lemaire, both of South Windsor, Conn., and Cherylin R. Johnson of Winchester, N.H.; nephews and nieces. He was born in Hartford, Conn., son of Theodore G. and Nina (Fromich) Grudoff. He was raised in Worcester, and lived in Spokane, Wa., before moving to Grafton in 1970. He was a U.S. Navy veteran of the Korean War.
Mr. Grudoff was a truck driver for Sweetlife Foods, New England Grocers, in Northboro before retiring several years ago. He was also a truck driver for United Van Lines in Spokane, Wash.
He was a member of Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 1497 in South Grafton, a member of Teamsters Local 170 AFL-CIO, in Worcester and the Green Acres Tenants Association. He was an avid sport fan and was a pitcher for a minor league professional baseball team for several years.
A funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday in the Robert C. Roney-Grafton Funeral Home, 152 Worcester St., North Grafton. Calling hours are 9 to 11 a.m. Saturday at the funeral home. Charles F. Haendle, 84, former music arranger

WORCESTER -- Charles F. Haendle, 84, of Westbury, N.Y., formerly of Worcester, a music arranger and heating engineer, died Saturday in University Commons Nursing Care Center, Worcester, where he had been a resident for the past two years.
He leaves his wife of 51 years, Tania (LaGarde) Haendle; a daughter, Hillary White of Millbury; a granddaughter; a nephew; and two nieces. He was born in Niagara Falls, N.Y., and was raised in St. Clair, Mich. He lived many years in Westbury. He lived 2.5 years in Worcester. He graduated from St. Clair High School and attended the University of Michigan at Ann Arbor.
He was an Army veteran of World War II, assigned to write music for shows promoting the sale of U.S. war bonds. He later directed the music school at the Fort Custer Rehabilitation Hospital in Battle Creek, Mich.
Mr. Haendle was a professional music arranger for several dance orchestras of the big band era in the New York City area, including Sammy Kaye, for whom he arranged for 13 years. He appeared on Broadway in “Call Me Madam”in the 1950s.
He was then a heating and air-conditioning engineer for many years, retiring in 1988.
Mr. Haendle was an accomplished photographer and woodworker, and skilled in electronics and computer science. He also liked to play golf.
A celebration of his life will be held at the convenience of the family in Westbury. After cremation, burial will be at the convenience of the family. There are no calling hours. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to a charity. Mulhane Home for Funerals, 45 Main St., Millbury, is directing arrangements in the Worcester area.
Clayton E. Holland Sr., 81

GRAFTON -- Clayton E. “Chate” Holland Sr., 81, formerly of 2 Creeper Hill Road, North Grafton, died Sunday in the Milford-Whitinsville Regional Hospital in Milford, after a long illness.
His wife, Jeanette M. (Kneeland) Holland, died in 1986. He leaves a son, Richard W. Holland of North Grafton; a brother, Floyd M. Holland of North Grafton; a grandson and a granddaughter. Another son, Clayton E. “Skip” Holland Jr. of Webster, died in 1994. He was born in Grafton, son of Edward A. and Blanche J. (Hastings) Holland, and lived here all his life. He was a graduate of Grafton High School and was a World War II veteran serving in the U.S. Army.
Mr. Holland worked for 29 years as a welder at Bay State Abrasives in Westboro, retiring in 1981.
Mr. Holland was a member of The Baptist Church of Grafton, where he sang in the choir, served on the Property Committee, the Long Range Planning Committee and the Board of Directors. He was a deacon and worked on many church functions and projects.
He was a member of the Bay State Retirees Club, Grafton Ecumenical Choir, and the A.A.R.P. He was a trustee of the Nelson Memorial Library and Park in North Grafton. He was a musician playing with The Cedar Swamp Seven Dixieland Band as a bassist for many years.
A funeral service will be held 11 a.m. Thursday in The Baptist Church of Grafton, 1 South St., Grafton Center. Burial will be in Pine Grove Cemetery, North Grafton. Calling hours are 6 to 9 p.m. tomorrow at the Robert C. Roney Funeral Home, 152 Worcester St., North Grafton. Virginia Belle Houghton

ZEPHYRHILLS, Fla. -- Virginia Belle (Chapman) Houghton, 79, of Zephyrhills, formerly of Worcester, Mass., a retired company bookkeeper, died June 7 in Heartland of Zephyrhills after an illness.
Her husband, Charles A. Houghton Jr., died yesterday in Zephyrhills. She leaves a daughter, Virginia L. Kalil of Worcester; a sister, Marjorie Callahan of Hayward, Calif.; two stepsons, Charles A. Houghton III of Holden, Mass., and Steven R. Houghton; seven grandchildren; and a great-grandchild. She was born in Worcester, daughter of Eugene E. and Velma (Wood) Chapman, and lived here many years. She graduated from a Worcester high school.
Mrs. Houghton was a bookkeeper at a burglar and fire alarm company in Worcester for many years before retiring. She was a longtime member of Morning Star Lodge of Masons in Worcester.
Following cremation, a graveside service was held in Bushnell. Oakley Funeral Home, 11441 U.S. Highway 301, Dade City, directed arrangements.
Ramona Bryant Hudson

GARDNER -- Ramona (Smart) Bryant Hudson, 69, of 61 West Broadway, who once sang with a country and western band, died yesterday at Heywood Hospital after an illness.
She leaves two sons, Dennis Bryant of Rindge, N.H., and Gordon Bryant of Belmont, N.H.; a daughter, Carole Bryant of Tustin, Calif.; two brothers, Albert Smart of Winchester, N.H., and Walter Smart Jr. of Putney, Vt.; two sisters, Geraldine McCullock of Putney and Judith Bell of McDonough, N.Y.; nine grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; and nephews and nieces. She was born in Hinsdale, N.H., daughter of Walter R. and Alta H. (Graham) Smart, and lived here more than 15 years. She graduated from Thayer High School in Winchester, N.H.
During the 1950s and '60s, she sang with a local country and western band, “Ramona and the Pioneer Valley Boys,” which appeared on WMUR-TV, Channel 9, and on local radio.
A memorial service will be held at 3 p.m. Friday at Smith Funeral Home, 69 Vernon Street. Burial will be private. There are no calling hours.
