Mathias W. Rondeau, 96

THOMPSON, Conn. -- Mathias W. Rondeau, 96, of Upper Church St., a World War II Navy veteran, died Thursday in Matulaitis Nursing Home, Putnam.
His wife of 45 years, Yvonne (Gagne) Rondeau, died in 1971. He leaves a son, Edward E. Rondeau Sr. of Putnam; a daughter, Shirley Elliott of Thompson; two brothers, Alfred Rondeau of Putnam and Alberic Rondeau of West Warwick, R.I.; two sisters, Florence Mineau of West Warwick and Julette Znoi of Scituate, R.I.; eight grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; nephews and nieces. He was born in Artic, R.I., son of Arthur and Emile Rondeau, and lived many years here and in Putnam. He was a World War II Navy veteran.
Mr. Rondeau was a fireman and boiler tender in several area plants for many years, retiring in 1970. He was an avid woodcarver.
A memorial Mass will be at 1 p.m. Thursday in St. Mary's Church, Providence Street, Putnam. Burial will be in St. Mary's Cemetery, Putnam. There are no calling hours. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to St. Mary's Church, Providence Street, or to Matulaitis Patients Activity Fund, 10 Thurber Road, both Putnam, Conn. 06260. Bartel Funeral Home, 33 Schofield Ave., Dudley, Mass., is directing arrangements.
Ruth Waldman Rothfarb, marathon runner, 96

BOSTON -- A Russian immigrant who ran her first marathon in her 70s and held nearly two dozen world records in her age class has died. She was 96.
Ruth A. Waldman Rothfarb of Cambridge began running at the age of 69, and completed several Boston Marathons, as well as long distance races in Atlanta, Los Angeles, New Zealand and Thailand.
She died Wednesday in the Hebrew Rehabilitation Center for the Aged in Boston's Roslindale section.
Rothfarb was born in Russia and immigrated to the United States as a teen-ager in 1913. She worked part time at a dry goods store while attending school and, after her marriage to Harry Rothfarb, worked full time maintaining a home, raising two children, and helping her husband run the family clothing business.
“There was not time to run,” she said in a 1985 interview with the Boston Herald. “We had to work.”
She started running after her husband died in 1979.
“I had to do something,” she said. “I wasn't going to sit around doing nothing.”
At 84, she was running 10 miles a day and running marathons in about 5/4 hours.
Winifred D. Rubbe, 85

SHREWSBURY -- Winifred D. (Lyons) Rubbe, 85, of 49 Edgewater Ave. died Saturday night in St. Vincent Hospital, Worcester, after an illness.
Her husband, Vincent M. Rubbe Sr., died in 1982. She leaves a son, Vincent M. Rubbe Jr. of Shrewsbury, with whom she lived; a grandson, Vincent J. Rubbe of Providence; nephews and nieces. She was born in Worcester, daughter of Michael and Bridget (Mulqueeny) Lyons, and lived here most of her life.
Mrs. Rubbe was a textile worker at Worcester Knitting Co. and Graton & Knight Co., both in Worcester, for many years. She retired 20 years ago. She was a life communicant of St. Anne's Church.
The funeral will be held tomorrow from Arthur S. Manzi & Son Funeral Home, 179 Shrewsbury St., Worcester, with a Mass at 9:30 a.m. in St. Anne's Church, 130 Boston Turnpike. Burial will be in Mountain View Cemetery. A calling hour is 8:15 to 9:15 a.m. tomorrow at the funeral home.
Dennis D. Ryberg, 50

NORTHBORO -- Dennis “Doc” D. Ryberg, 50, of 7 Chesterfield Road, died Sunday at the University of Massachusetts Hospital from a heart attack after being stricken at home.
He leaves his wife of 18 years, Karen A. (O'Brien) Ryberg; a son, Matthew S. Ryberg of Northboro; a sister, Linda Kidney of Greene, N.Y.; nieces and nephews. Born in Norwich, N.Y., son of Virgil and Elsie (Howland) Ryberg, he moved to Northboro in 1980. He graduated from Clinton High School in New York. He was a Vietnam War Coast Guard veteran.
Mr. Ryberg worked for the Sunshine Sign Co. in Grafton. He enjoyed reading and mountain biking.
The funeral service will be at 11 a.m. Thursday in Leland-Hays Funeral Home, 56 Main St. Burial will be in Howard Street Cemetery. Calling hours are 5 to 8 p.m. tomorrow at the funeral home. Richard Brown, 69

UPTON -- Richard Brown, 69, of 336 Westboro Road, a retired master plumber and business owner, died Thursday, April 12, in UMass Memorial Medical Center -- Memorial Campus, Worcester, after an illness.
He leaves his wife, Lorna L. (Wright) Brown; two sons, Joel M. Brown of the Whitinsville section of Northbridge and David W. Brown of Grafton; a daughter, Lauren Elisabeth of Milford; a brother, William E. Brown of Westboro; three sisters, Irene R. Bukata of Durham, N.H., and Ann Van Houten and Louise Brown, both of Westboro; six grandchildren; nephews and nieces. Three brothers, Charles F., Walter F. and T. Leo Brown, and two sisters, Margaret Belli and Mary Ustoitis, predeceased him. He was born in Westboro, son of William J. and Annie E. (Fitzpatrick) Brown, and moved to Upton in 1955. He was educated in Westboro schools and was a Navy veteran of the Korean War.
Mr. Brown was a master plumber, and owned and operated Richard Brown Plumbing and Heating Co., Westboro, retiring because of illness in February. He was a past commander of Veterans of Foreign Wars, a charter member of the Upton Historical Society, and a former coach for the Upton Boys Club. He attended United Parish of Upton.
The funeral service will be held at 10 a.m. Tuesday, April 17, in United Parish of Upton, Central Square. Burial will be in Maplewood Cemetery. Calling hours are 4 to 8 p.m. Monday, April 16, in Rand-Harper-Pickering Westboro Funeral Home, 62 West Main St., Westboro. AUBURN -- Helen J. (Corrigan) Scott, 81, of 22 Carroll St. died yesterday in Notre Dame Care Center, Worcester.
She leaves her husband, Francis X. Scott; a daughter, Catherine S. Fellenz of Worcester; three grandchildren, and two nieces. She was born in Boston, daughter of John and Catherine (Moran) Corrigan, and lived many years in Worcester and 45 years in Auburn. She graduated from Commerce High School in Worcester.
Mrs. Scott was a communicant of St. Joseph's Church and a member of its Women's League.
The funeral will be held Wednesday from O'Connor Brothers Funeral Home, 592 Park Ave., Worcester, with a Mass at 11:30 a.m. in St. Joseph's Church, 189 Oxford St. Burial will be in St. John's Cemetery, Worcester. Calling hours are 5 to 8 p.m. tomorrow at the funeral home.

WORCESTER -- Alfred P. St. John Sr., 77, of 61 South St., a truck driver for more than 35 years, died yesterday in University of Massachusetts Hospital after an illness.
He leaves his wife of 40 years, Marie A. (Varney) St. John; a son, Alfred P. St. John Jr. of Worcester; four sisters, Amy Shepard and Doris LaPerle, both of Worcester, Bertha Lee and Eleanor Garriepy, both of Millbury; nephews and nieces. He was born in Millbury, son of Peter and Edith (Knight) St. John, and lived here most of his life. He graduated from Commerce High School.
Mr. St. John was a truck driver for United Parcel Service for more than 35 years, retiring in 1985. He was a volunteer for many years in the Toys for Tots program. He was a member of Local 170, Teamsters union.
The funeral will be held Tuesday from Callahan Brothers Funeral Home, 61 Myrtle St., with a Mass at 10 a.m. in St. John's Church, 41 Temple St. Burial will be in Notre Dame Cemetery. Calling hours are 6 to 8 p.m. tomorrow at the funeral home.
Thomas F. Sullivan, 85

WORCESTER -- Thomas F. “Frank” Sullivan, 85, formerly of 60 Thorndyke Road, a business executive for many years and long active in his church, died Saturday in Shrewsbury Nursing Center.
His wife, Helen (Coffey) Sullivan, died in 1981. He leaves two sons, Central District Court Justice Thomas F. Sullivan Jr. of Northboro and Richard T. Sullivan of Natick; a daughter, Maryann J. Mucha of Keene, N.H.; seven grandchildren; nephews and nieces. He was born in Worcester, son of James J. and Mary F. (Dunne) Sullivan, and lived there before moving to Shrewsbury in 1995. He graduated from Classical High School in 1930 and New England School of Accounting in 1934.
Mr. Sullivan was vice president of Duesberg-Bosson of America Inc. in Jefferson, where he worked for more than 30 years. He retired in 1985. During World War II, he was a cost accountant at Reed-Prentice Corp.
He was a member of Our Lady of the Rosary Church for more than 60 years, and a longtime member of its Holy Name Society and its Boy Scout Troop Committee.
The funeral will be held Wednesday from Athy Memorial Home, 111 Lancaster St., with a Mass at 11 a.m. in Our Lady of the Rosary Church, 25 Fales St. Burial will be in St. John's Cemetery. Calling hours are 4 to 8 p.m. tomorrow at the funeral home.
David R. Szoc, 44

GARDNER -- David R. Szoc, 44, of 10 Lennon St., a landscaper and former electrical inspector, died yesterday in Heywood Hospital after an illness.
He leaves his parents, Rudolph and Alice (Kreminski) Szoc of Gardner; two brothers Kenneth Szoc of Hampton, N.J., and James Szoc of Baldwinville; a sister, MaryAlice Durant of Upton; uncles and aunts; nephews and nieces. A sister, Katherine Szoc of Gardner, died in 1953. He was born in Gardner. He graduated from Gardner High School in 1971 and attended Unity College in Maine and Mount Wachusett Community College.
Mr. Szoc was an inspector for many years at General Electric Co in Fitchburg. He was then a landscaper for Rutland Nurseries in Rutland and later the Winchendon School Golf Course. He was a member of St. Joseph's Church.
The funeral will be held tomorrow from Poliks Funeral Home, 431 Pleasant St., with a Mass at 11 a.m. in St. Joseph's Church, 358 Pleasant St. Burial will be in St. Joseph's Cemetery. Mary E. Thomas, 88

WORCESTER -- Mary E. (Nichols) Robertson Thomas, 88, of the Life Care Center of Auburn, formerly of 275 Pleasant St., died yesterday in St. Vincent Hospital after an illness.
Her husband, Bert Thomas, died in 1979. Her first husband, Harry Robertson, died in 1940. She leaves three sons, Edmund E. Robertson of Auburn, Ronald H. Robertson of Worcester and William W. Robertson of Sutton; two daughters, Evelyn M. Johnston of Auburn and Carol A. Hale of Chicopee; 21 grandchildren; 21 great-grandchildren; and a great-great-grandson. She was born in Worcester, daughter of Charles F. and Estelle A. (Holbrook) Nichols. She moved to Auburn recently.
Mrs. Thomas was a member of Blessed Sacrament Church. She was an avid bingo, cribbage and card player.
