Paul Ryan, 55, of Northbridge, formerly of Belmont and Wellesley
Paul " Mark " Ryan, 55, of Northbridge, formerly of Belmont and Wellesley, died unexpectedly, Friday, Nov. 23, 2001 at UMass Medical Center, Worcester.
Born in Boston, he was the son of the late Paul and Stephanie (Burton) Ryan.
Mr. Ryan is survived by two sisters, Stephanie Streit of Ohio and Lisa Ryan of Connecticut; a brother, Peter Ryan of California; an aunt, Patricia M. Burton of Belmont; three nieces and one nephew.
The funeral will be held from the Stanton Funeral Home, 786 Mt. Auburn St., Watertown, at 9 a.m. today, Nov. 29 with a funeral Mass celebrated in Our Lady of Mercy Church, Belmont St., Belmont at 10 a.m. Relatives and friends are invited to attend. Interment is private.
Thomas A. Weisz, 80, of Belmont
Thomas Anthony Weisz, 80, of Belmont, died Wednesday, Nov. 21, 2001, at the Sancta Maria Nursing Facility in Cambridge.
He was born in Columbus, Ohio and prior to retirement was employed as a chemical engineer.
Mr. Weisz is survived by two sons, Gregory Jay Weisz of Belmont and Mark Weisz of Arlington; a daughter, Andrea Sterling of Albuquerque, N.M.; five grandchildren and a dear friend, Harriet Fisher of Fox Point, Wis.
Funeral services were private.

Coleen Baird, 55, of Belmont
Coleen Hansen Baird, 55, a longtime resident of Belmont, died of cancer Wednesday, Jan. 2, 2002. She was the wife of Lloyd S. Baird.
Born in Richfield, Utah, she was the daughter of Fay Leon and Mary Jennie (Hendrickson) Hansen. She graduated from Utah State University in 1969 and Michigan State University in 1976, earning a degree in child development. A gifted artist and writer, she published a children’s book and articles in the Ensign Magazine.
She served for over 30 years in various leadership positions for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints including seven years as voluntary instructor of advanced religious studies courses for students in Wellesley College and Boston University, and as head of the women’s organization for the Greater Boston area. Recently she served on the public affairs committee for the Boston Temple. She was also a trusted advisor to her husband, who serves as leader of the LDS community in Greater Boston.
In addition to her husband she is survived by her children, Jennifer Baird West, Bret Jonathan Baird, Anthony Walter Baird, Peter Joshua Baird, Christopher Stanford Baird, Matthew David Baird, Samuel Paul Baird, Justin Bruce Baird, and Nathanael Lloyd Baird; five grandchildren and seven brothers and sisters.
A memorial service was held Friday, Jan. 4 at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints meeting house in Belmont. A funeral service will be held at the West Bountiful Stake Center, West Bountiful, Utah.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Cancer Building Project at the Massachusetts General Hospital.

J. Frank Lane, 78, of Lincoln
J. Frank Lane, 78, of Lincoln, died Saturday, Jan. 5, 2002, at the Lahey Clinic in Burlington. He was the husband of Kathleen (Young) Lane.
Born in Belmont, he was the son of the late Agnes (Maher) and John F. Lane. He graduated from Belmont High School, earned a bachelor of science degree in electrical engineering from Tufts University and took graduate studies in engineering management at Northeastern University.
Mr. Lane was president and treasurer of a microwave laboratory company performing design and manufacturing of microwave components, systems and instruments, for four years. He was an engineering manager, program manager and technical director of new programs for Raytheon for 13 years and also worked for RCA for three years. He also served as president and owner of Lane Regency Management in Lincoln.
Music was his hobby and though he played several musical instruments, piano was his specialty. He also enjoyed tennis and golf. He and his wife traveled extensively to Europe, Africa, the Middle East and the South Pacific as well as throughout the United States. As a young man he was an amateur radio operator. He also worked with the Lincoln Players and participated at events at the DeCordova Museum.
Besides his wife, Mr. Lane is survived by a daughter, Patricia Walch and her husband Steven, and three grandchildren, all of Sudbury.
A funeral Mass was celebrated at St. Joseph’s Church in Lincoln on Wednesday, Jan. 9 with interment in Lincoln Cemetery.

Gasperina Messina, 84, leaves family in Belmont
Gasperina M. " Frances " Messina, 84, of Arlington, died Monday, Dec. 31, 2001, at her summer residence in Hull after a long illness.
Born in Boston, she was the daughter of the late Gaspare and Francesca (Riggio) Messina. Prior to moving to Arlington 36 years ago she lived in Somerville. She was a graduate of St. John’s Elementary School in the North End and Mount St. Joseph’s Academy in Brighton. She received her bachelor’s degree from Emanuel College and her master’s degree from Boston University.
Ms. Messina started her career as an elementary school teacher at the Knapp School in Somerville. She also taught special needs students as well as English as a Second Language in the Somerville Adult Education Night School program. In 1967 she was appointed the first woman principal in 50 years in Somerville at the Healey and Grimmons Schools; she retired in 1979.
She is survived by three sons, Dr. John F. Messina of Belmont, Lucian V. Messina of Hudson and Phillip J. Messina of Arlington; a daughter, Katherine A. Vaillancourt of Hull; and eight grandchildren.
Funeral services were held at St. Agnes Church in Arlington on Friday, Jan. 4 with the Rev. Kevin White officiating. Interment was in St. Joseph’s Cemetery, West Roxbury.

Frank Lombardo
Frank Lombardo, 87, of Belmont, died Saturday, Jan. 19, 2002, at the Sancta Maria Nursing Facility in Cambridge.
Born in Watertown, he was a lifelong resident of Belmont. He was a retired farmer.
Mr. Lombardo is survived by three sisters, Rose A. Lombardo of Belmont, Catherine Berman of California and Mary Cocco of Pepperell; a brother, Anthony Lombardo of Arlington; and several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by a brother, John Lombardo.
The funeral was held from the Short, Williamson & Diamond Funeral Home in Belmont, on Tuesday, Jan. 22, with a funeral Mass in St. Jerome’s Church, Arlington. Interment was in Belmont Cemetery.
Virginia M. McGrath
BELMONT — Virginia M. (Forand) McGrath, 82, died Thursday, Jan. 17, 2002. She was the wife of the late Robert E. McGrath.
Born June 16, 1919, Mrs. McGrath was employed as a librarian in the Belmont Public Library.
She is survived by a son, John McGrath of Belmont; two daughters, Patricia McGrath of Cambridge, and Maureen McGrath of Oakland, Calif.; a daughter-in-law, Penelope McGrath; a brother, Robert Forand of Burlington; and four grandchildren. She was also the mother of the late James McGrath, and the sister of the late Rita Northrup, Dorothy Costello and Ruth Forand.
A funeral was held Jan. 23, from the Stanton Funeral Home in Watertown, followed by a funeral Mass in the Church of St. Luke. Interment was private.
