Robert P. O'Brien
Robert P. O'Brien, 72, of Arlington, formerly of Belmont, died Sunday, Nov. 18, 2001, at home. He was the husband of Joan F. (Anderson) O'Brien.
He was born in Boston. and was employed as an engineer for the Raytheon missile system. He was also a U.S. Army veteran.
In addition to his wife, Mr. O'Brien is survived by two sons, Jonathan R. O'Brien of No. Billerica, and Gregory P. O'Brien and his wife Lynne of McLean, Va.; a daughter, Lauren A. O'Brien of Denver, Colo.; three grandchildren; two sisters, Joan LaValle of Watertown and Therese Flaherty of Medford; many nieces and nephews; and best friends, Mary and Dick O樽ara of Lexington. He was predeceased by three sisters, Katherine Robinson, Mary Rossi and Eileen Terrio, and a brother, Phillip O'Brien.
The funeral was held from the Stanton Funeral Home, Watertown on Wednesday, Nov. 21 with a funeral Mass celebrated in the Church of St. Luke in Belmont. Interment was in St. Patrick痴 Cemetery.

Ethel G. Smellie
Ethel G. (Waite) Smellie, 94, a former longtime resident of Belmont, died Wednesday, Nov. 14, 2001. She was the wife of the late William G. Smellie.
Mrs. Smellie was born in Brockton and was a homemaker.
She is survived by a daughter, Carol A. Kirby of Sudbury; a sister, Carol A. Grace of Belmont; seven grandchildren and many great-grandchildren. She was predeceased by a son, William G. Smiley, and a daughter, Martha L. Blackman.
Private funeral services were held in the Brown & Sons Funeral Home, Belmont with a burial at Cambridge Cemetery.
Annette M. Tuel
Annette M. Tuel, 42, of Belmont, died Thursday, Nov. 15, 2001.
Born in Stockton, Calif., she was the daughter of Francille Tuel of California. Ms. Tuel was employed as a sales clerk at Star Market.
Besides her mother, she is survived by a daughter, Angela E. Tuel of Belmont; a sister, Diana Hedgecock of California; and a beloved companion and friend, Robert J. Zolner of Belmont.
Funeral services, under the direction of Brown & Sons Funeral Home, Belmont, were private.

Helene A. Beck, 80, Belmont
BELMONT — Helene A. Beck, 80, died Nov, 25, 2001, following a one-year battle with cancer.
She was born Helen A. Samuels in New York City, where she spent her childhood years, and later in London, England, and Beverly Hills, Calif.
She was active for several decades in local and state politics, serving as an elected Town Meeting member in Belmont and a member of the Democratic State Committee for many years. She was involved in a variety of social organizations and was particularly proud of having been a volunteer counselor at Planned Parenthood for several years.
Having grown up the daughter of a screenwriter, Mrs. Beck maintained an interest in theater throughout her life. She was an active and energetic performer in several local community theater groups, particularly The Arlington Friends of the Drama, and the Belmont Dramatic Club. She showed a particular fondness and aptitude for English character parts and was always grateful to the Arlington Friends for having allowed her to show the world how Lady Bracknell should be played.
An avid Red Sox fan, the yellowing pages of the September 1967 Globe headline announcing the pennant remained taped to her kitchen wall for over 30 years.
She is survived by two sons, Thomas Beck of Concord, and Peter Beck of New York City; two grandsons, and her former husband, Dr. William S. Beck of Winchester.

Frank A. Celi, 75, of Belmont
Frank A. Celi, 75, of Belmont, died Sunday, Nov. 18, 2001, at his home. He was the husband of Mary M. (Maggio) Celi.
Born in Waltham, he was a U.S. Navy veteran of World War II. He was a member of the Pipefitters Union Local #537, the St. Joseph Parish Holy Name Society and the Retired Men’s Club of Arlington.
In addition to his wife, Mr. Celi is survived by two daughters, Maria E. Pitts of Acton and Suzanne M. Caruso of Attleboro; three sons, Michael A. Celi of Westford, Richard F. Celi of Burlington and Frankie L. Celi of Newton; a sister, Camille D. Shaw of New Hampshire and 10 grandchildren. He was predeceased by a brother, Robert D. Celi.
The funeral was held from the Stanton Funeral Home, Watertown, Saturday, Nov. 24 with a funeral Mass celebrated in St. Joseph Church, Belmont. Interment was in Belmont Cemetery.

William Paterson, 83, of Belmont
William Paterson, 83, of Belmont and Ocean Park, Maine, died unexpectedly Friday, Nov. 23, 2001. He was the husband of the late M. Phyllis (Jones) Paterson.
Mr. Paterson immigrated from Wishaw, Scotland to Cambridge in the early 1920s. He graduated from Cambridge High and Latin School. Prior to retiring as assistant general manager in 1983, he was employed at Cambridge Electric Light Company for 46 years.
During World War II he served with the U.S. Navy aboard the USS Aquila AK-47, an attack cargo ship that traversed the North Atlantic and Caribbean arena. After the war he resumed his education, graduating from Northeastern University with a bachelor of science degree in business administration. He also graduated from the University of Michigan Public Utility Executive Program in Ann Arbor.
He volunteered as a Sunday school teacher and was general superintendent of the church school at the First Baptist Church in Cambridge. An avid choir member in various churches he served as publicist for the Cambridge Minister’s Council.
In Cambridge he was involved with the Boy Scouts Council, was a director and past president of the East End Neighborhood House, volunteered with the Red Cross as a first-aid instructor, was a past member of the Cambridge Auxiliary Police and a board member of the Cambridge Salvation Army and the Belmont Retired Men’s Club.
He was a past master of the Amicable Lodge in Cambridge and served as its secretary since 1960. He was also master and secretary of the Seventh Lodge of Instruction, served as district deputy grand master for the Cambridge Masonic Second District and had been a director of the Cambridge Masonic Hall Association for more than 30 years. He was high priest and treasurer of Cambridge Chapter and installed grand high priest of the Grand Royal Arch Chapter of Massachusetts in 1990. He holds the Benjamin Hurd Jr. Medal for distinguished service to Grand Chapter and was one of the few awarded the Joseph A. Warren Medal.
Mr. Paterson was an active worker in the Valley of Boston Consistory-Scottish Rite and a member of Aleppo Temple Shriners. He helped design the award-winning stained glass window in the chapel of the Masonic home in Charlton and authored the 200th anniversary historical booklet of the Grand Chapter of Massachusetts.
Mr. Paterson is survived by one son, William L. Paterson of North Andover; two daughters, Jean Galvin and her husband Joseph of Somerville and Ellen Keenan and her husband Stephen of Malden; six grandchildren and his companion, Carol Sullivan of Wareham.
A funeral service was held Wednesday, Nov. 28 at First Baptist Church in Cambridge with burial at Mt. Auburn Cemetery.

Funeral arrangements were under the direction of Diamond Funeral Home, Belmont.
Elizabeth S. Redmond, 71, of Belmont
Elizabeth S. " Betty " Redmond, 71, of Belmont, died Wednesday, Nov. 14, 2001, at Mt. Auburn Hospital.
Born in Hull, she was the daughter of the late Clement J. and Helen V. (Stanton) Redmond. She was employed as a corporate administrator.
She is survived by a sister, Helen F. Pennell of Lexington; a brother, John A. Redmond of Brewster and many nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by two sisters Patricia A. Redmond and Ursula MacLaughlin.
The funeral was held Saturday, Nov. 17 from the Stanton Funeral Home, Watertown with a funeral Mass celebrated in St. Joseph’s Church, Belmont. Interment was in Belmont Cemetery.
