Elma Farnsworth

BELMONT — Elma " Peggy " (Morris) Farnsworth, 94, a longtime resident of Belmont, died June 1, 2001, at the Fairlawn Nursing Home in Lexington, where she resided for the past two years. She was the wife of the late Dana L. Farnsworth, MD, the Henry K. Oliver Professor of Hygiene and director of Harvard University Health Services.

She was born in Harrisville, W.V. She was raised on a farm and from her early years learned to love animals and nature. Her mother was her home teacher until the fifth grade. She was active in the 4-H Club throughout her childhood and continued to support the work of this organization until her death.

Mrs. Farnsworth was employed in county extension work and traveled throughout rural areas of the state encountering many adventures as she served its residents.

She and her husband shared their mutual interest in issues relating to education and mental health of young people, beginning with their work in 4-H in Jackson Mills. Together they spent a lifetime working to provide opportunities for young people, and were particularly concerned that those from rural areas receive an education.

As an outgrowth of their commitment, Mrs. Farnsworth has established the Farnsworth Library, and the Dana and Peggy Farnsworth Chair in educational psychiatry at the West Virginia University Medical School. The library collection located at the Chestnut Ridge Hospital (Morgantown) has many of the books from their home including limited editions, personal and professional papers, and speeches.

Mrs. Farnsworth was a professional volunteer throughout her life. She served at the Massachusetts General Hospital, Massachusetts Institute of Technology and Harvard University. She was also passionate about her genealogical research and carefully documented the Farnsworth family, which included extensive examination of records in New Jersey and West Virginia, as well as museums and libraries in London.

Funeral services will be held on Friday, June 8. Interment will be in Farnsworth Cemetery, W.V.

Arrangements were under the care of the Short, Williamson & Diamond Funeral Home, Belmont.

Benjamin David Crepeau

TEWKSBURY - The many relatives and friends of David B. and Donna M. (Day) Crepeau, of Tewksbury, will be saddened to learn of the death of their infant son, Benjamin David Crepeau, at birth on Sunday, May 27, 2001, at Winchester Hospital.

Besides his parents, he is survived by maternal grandparents Frank and Marie (Leger) Day of Ayer, formerly of Arlington; paternal grandfather John Crepeau of Belmont; aunts and uncles, Brian and Terry (Rano) Day of Northbridge, Brenda and Wil Rolfe of Ayer, Brian and Robin (Grigsby) Crepeau of California, Diane Crepeau of Oklahoma, and many great-aunts, great-uncles and cousins. He was also grandson of the late Barbara (King) Crepeau, who died in 2000.

Private funeral services will be held in Belmont.

Arrangements are through the Tewksbury Funeral Home.

William L. Prati

William L. Prati, 88, of Belmont, died Friday, June 1, 2001, at his home after a long illness. He was the husband of the late Margaret (Duggan) Prati.

Born in New Jersey, he was the son of the late Francesco and Rosa (Granelli) Prati. He resided in Belmont for 45 years. He was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II, serving as a technician fifth grade with the 1150 Armored Signal Battalion in the battles of Northern France, Rhineland and Central Europe.

Mr. Prati is survived by his sisters, Oreste Prati and Nerina Locchi of Italy; a niece, Alida Prati of Belmont, and a nephew, Gary Sparks of Arlington. He was predeceased by two brothers, Dante and Gino Prati, and a sister, Angela Ralli.

Services were held from the Brasco & Sons Memorial in Belmont, on Tuesday, June 4 with a Mass of Christian Burial at St. Joseph’s Church, Belmont. Interment followed in St. Patrick’s Cemetery, Watertown.

Expressions of sympathy may be made in his memory to the American Cancer Society, 30 Speen St., Framingham, MA 01701.

Frances E. Dixon

Frances E. Dixon, 94, formerly of Belmont, died June 9, 2001, at the Gorham House in Gorham, Maine. She was the wife of the late Merton F. Dixon, who died in 1968.

She was born in Boston on Aug. 5, 1906, the daughter of Harry and Eva (Carpenter) Moulton. She was raised in Cambridge and graduated from Cambridge High and Latin and received a diploma from Boston University in the field of practical arts and letters.

Mrs. Dixon was an active member of the Belmont Methodist Church. She enjoyed singing in the choir, and church picnics. She was a member of the Belmont Woman’s Club and the Order of Eastern Star.

Mrs. Dixon enjoyed gardening, crafting and the fine arts, especially music. One of her favorite things was to celebrate every holiday in grand fashion.

For many years she was employed at United Fruit, and as an administrative assistant for F.W. Dixon Company of Cambridge and Woburn.

She is survived by a son, David M. Dixon of Limington, Maine; two daughters, Joanne E. Chadbourne of Somers, Conn., and Martha Hamilton of Limerick, Maine; 10 grandchildren; and 19 great-grandchildren.

A funeral service was held June 13, at the Limerick Congregational Church in Limerick, Maine. Interment was in Mt. Auburn Cemetery, Cambridge.

Arrangements were under the care of the Heald Funeral Home, Limerick, Maine.

Edward L. McHugh

WOBURN — Edward L. McHugh, 71, died June 4, 2001, at his home. He was the husband of Diane F. (Casey) McHugh.

He was born in Arlington, the son of the late Edward and Ruth (Arnold) McHugh. Mr. McHugh lived in Woburn for the last 42 years. He formerly lived in Arlington and Belmont.

Mr. McHugh was employed as a produce manager for the First National Stores for 44 years before he retired.

He had a great interest in antique automobiles. He owned many cars over the years and enjoyed working on them and displaying them at car shows.

In addition to his wife, he is survived by three sons, Edward McHugh of Washington, Albert McHugh of Burlington, and Robert McHugh of Woburn; a daughter, Lynne Rice of Woburn; two sisters, Louise Swanton of Waltham, and Anne Sylvester of Dedham; and two grandchildren. He was also the brother of the late Ruth Babineau.

A funeral was held June 8, from the McLaughlin-Dello Russo Funeral Home in Woburn, followed by a funeral Mass in St. Anthony Church. Interment was in Woodbrook Cemetery, Woburn.

John N. Behrikis, 78, of Waltham

WALTHAM — John N. Behrikis, 78, died Oct. 26, 2001, at the Reservoir Nursing Home in Waltham. He was the husband of Christina R. (Riggio) Behrikis.

He was born in Somersworth, N.H., the son of the late Nicholas and Stella (Logothetis) Bahrakis.

During World War II, Mr. Behrikis served in the Army.

Before retiring, he was a shipping supervisor at McNabb Engineering in Waltham. He was also an ordained minister involved in evangelical ministry.

In addition to his wife, he is survived by a son, Christopher D. Behrikis and his wife Christine of Milford; two daughters, Virginia S. Behrikis of Weymouth, and Niki V. Shanahan and her husband John of Tyngsboro; two brothers, Peter Behrikis of Belmont and Dr. Anthony Bahros of Norwell; two sisters, Theresa Pintabone of Waltham and Jane McGonigle of Wayland; an aunt, Maria Safina of Waltham; two grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews. He was also the father of the late John M. Behrikis; and the brother of the late George and William Behrikis.

A funeral service was held Oct. 29, in the Joyce Funeral Home in Waltham. Interment was in Mount Feake Cemetery, Waltham.

Carolyn MacLeish, 83, of Belmont

Carolyn (de Chadenedes) MacLeish, 83, died Monday, Oct. 29, 2001, at Belmont Manor Nursing Home. She was the wife of Kenneth MacLeish, who died in 1977.

Born in Flushing, N.Y., she was the daughter of the late Jean Francois and Agnes de Chadenedes. She lived in the Annapolis, Md. area for 30 years and later in Cooperstown, N.Y. before moving to Belmont two years ago.

Mrs. MacLeish was a guide for Historic Annapolis for many years and had a continuing interest in the Paca House Gardens. She was also an active supporter of the Key School in Annapolis. She was a member of Christ Church in West River, Md., supporting the church as a member of the vestry and the choir and as a chalicist and lector.

She is survived by two daughters, Martha MacLeish Fuller of Somerville and Ellen MacLeish Zale of Conway, Mass.; two sons, A. Bruce MacLeish of Newport, R.I. and Kenneth I. MacLeish of Duluth, Ga; and nine grandchildren. She was the sister of Eleanor de Chadenedes of Newton and G. Boyce de Chadenedes of Colorado Springs. She was also predeceased by a brother, Francois de Chadenedes.

Calling hours will be held from 6 to 8 p.m. today, Nov. 1, at the Brown and Sons Funeral Home, Trapelo Road, Belmont. A memorial service will be held at a later date at Christ Episcopal Church in West River.
