Louis Leofanti

Louis Leofanti, 58, a lifelong resident of Belmont, died Wednesday, Nov. 8, 2000, at Mt. Auburn Hospital in Cambridge after a brief illness. He was the son of Americo Leofanti and the late Louise M. (Baldi) Leofanti of Belmont. Born in Boston, he was employed as a technician for the Polaroid Corporation for 30 years. Mr. Leofanti is survived by two daughters, Cristina J. Rymeski and her husband Edward of Whitinsville, and Regina M. Mee and her husband Gerald of Watertown; a son, Louis Joseph Leofanti of Belmont; three brothers, Peter Leofanti of Topsfield, Paul Leofanti of Wakefield and Richard Leofanti of Belmont; and six grandchildren. The funeral was held from the Short, Williamson & Diamond Funeral Home, Belmont, Monday, Nov. 13 with a funeral Mass in St. Joseph's Church, Belmont. Interment was in Belmont Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made in his memory to the American Cancer Society, 30 Speen St., Framingham, MA 01701.

Catherine A. Egan

Catherine A. Egan, 95, died suddenly at home on Nov. 12, 2000. She was a lifelong resident of Belmont. She graduated from Belmont High School in 1921 and attended Burdett College. Ms. Egan worked at Jordan Marsh, then as a jeweler at the Edmund W. Kirby Company in the Jewelers' Building in Boston, beginning in 1923. She later owned the business from September 1947 until her retirement in October 1973. For all of her life, Ms. Egan was very active in the life of St. Joseph's parish community, where she served as teacher, Parish Council member, member of the St. Vincent de Paul Society, and prefect of the Our Lady's Sodality. She recently attended the 100th anniversary celebration of the parish. In addition, Ms. Egan worked as a board member of Church Women United, receiving their national "Valiant Woman" award. She served as a Belmont Town Meeting member and remained vitally interested in all activities of Belmont. She was a member of the Belmont Historical Society, and enjoyed contributing her recollections to discussions and publications. Ms. Egan was a founding member and the first secretary of the Jr. Philomethia Club of Boston College, a member of the EIRE Society and an active participant in her monthly Book Club meetings. She is survived by a sister, H. Josephine (Egan) McCrohan of Marshfield Hills; a sister-in-law, Grace Egan of Belmont; and numerous nieces, nephews, grandnieces and grandnephews. A funeral Mass was celebrated Nov. 15, at St. Joseph's Church in Belmont. Interment was in Belmont Cemetery. Arrangements were under the care of the Brown & Sons Funeral Home, Belmont.

Catherine D. Cote

Catherine D. (Farrell) Cote, 89, of Belmont, died Nov. 7, 2000, at Mt. Auburn Hospital. Mrs. Cote was born in Middlebury, Vt., and was a graduate of Middlebury College in Vermont. She was a retired librarian of the Benton Branch of the Belmont Public Library. She is survived by three daughters, Claire Drinan of Belmont, Catherine Cote of Watertown, and Susan Cote of New Mexico; and two grandsons. Funeral services were private. For those who wish, contributions in Mrs. Cote's memory may be made to the Trustees of the Belmont Public Library, 336 Concord Ave., Belmont, MA 02478. Arrangements were under the care of the Stanton Funeral Service, Inc., Watertown.

Elizabeth H. Costine

WALTHAM - Elizabeth H. Costine, 89, formerly of Arlington and Belmont, died Nov. 9, 2000, at Mt. Auburn Hospital in Cambridge following a lengthy illness. She was the daughter of the late James P. and Elizabeth (Hoar) Costine. Ms. Costine was employed as a section head for the John Hancock Insurance Company. She was a member of the 3rd Order of Mary at St. Agnes Church, St. Agnes Sodality, Kaffee Klatch and Damien Guild at St. Agnes. Ms. Costine is survived by a nephew, Richard Segien and his wife Jean of Nashua, N.H.; a niece, Patricia A. Landry and her husband Paul of Waltham; a cousin, Rosalie Fitzpatrick of Cohasset; and several grandnieces, grandnephews, great-grandnieces and great-grandnephews. A funeral was held Nov. 14, from the Arlington Funeral Home, followed by a funeral Mass in St. Agnes Church. Interment was in Belmont Cemetery, Belmont. For those who wish, contributions in Ms. Costine's memory may be made to the Fidelity House, 24 Medford St., Arlington, MA 02474.

Elaine Kohn

Elaine (Ascher) Kohn, social worker and community volunteer, died at the Hebrew Rehabilitation Center in Roslindale Oct. 22, 2000. Born in Brooklyn, N.Y., she lived in Belmont following her marriage to the late Warren Kohn. A graduate of Barnard College, she also held a master's degree in social work from Simmons College. In her early years she worked with foster families at Boston Children's Services. She was subsequently Director of Volunteer Services for the Department of Public Welfare and later the Department of Social Services where she initiated lead screening programs and started the first parent aide programs in the commonwealth. Mrs. Kohn served on the board of Jewish Family and Children's Services and Jewish Vocational Services. She was active in A World of Difference and Facing History and Ourselves. She was honored by B'nai B'rith Women for her work in creating awareness of the problem of domestic violence in the Jewish community. She also received a leadership award from the Massachusetts Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Children. She is survived by her daughter and son-in-law, Suzanne and Sergio Modigliani, and two grandchildren.

Janet H. Maxwell

Janet H. Maxwell, a lifelong Belmont resident, died at home Saturday, Oct. 7, 2000, after a brief illness. Born in Cambridge, she was employed by Harvard University Graduate School of Education as an administrative assistant until her retirement. Mrs. Maxwell is survived by two daughters, Pamela Maxwell of Belmont, and Debbie Martorilli and her husband Nick of Waltham; a son, Charles B. (Chuck) Maxwell and his wife Norma of Framingham; and six grandchildren. Expressions of sympathy may be made in her memory to Beaver Brook Step Inc., 125 Walnut St., Watertown, MA 02472; or to the Charles River Association of Retarded Citizens, 49 Militia Heights Road, Needham, MA 02492.

Joseph E. Heanue

ARLINGTON - Joseph E. Heanue, 90, formerly of Belmont, died Nov. 10, 2000, at Eagle Pond Nursing Home. He was the husband of the late Grace C. (Costigan) Heanue. He was born in Cambridge and was a graduate of Belmont High School, Class of 1928. Mr. Heanue was a retired supervisor for the Postal Service. He was a member of the Belmont Retired Men's Club, the Senior Citizens group of Arlington and the Men's Garden Club of Greater Boston. He is survived by two sons, Kevin E. Heanue and his wife Anne of Alexandria, Va., and Paul T. Heanue and his wife Katherine of Newton and Brewster; a daughter, Anne M. Berard and her husband Leo of Yarmouthport; a sister, Agnes McEvoy of Newton; nine grandchildren; and 15 great-grandchildren. He was also the brother of the late John Heanue and Mary Crawford. A funeral was held Nov. 14, from the Stanton Funeral Home in Watertown, followed by a funeral Mass in Our Lady of Mercy Church, Belmont. Interment was in Mt. Auburn Cemetery. For those who wish, contributions in Mr. Heanue's memory may be made to the Alzheimer's Association of Cape Cod and the Islands Chapter, P.O. Box 953, Barnstable, MA 02630.

Dennis P. Normile

CONCORD - Dennis P. Normile, formerly of Belmont, died Sept. 17, 2000. He was the husband of Donna Lee (Eastman) Normile.

In addition to his wife and parents, John and Muriel (Taffe) Normile of Dover, N.H., he is survived by a daughter, Hannah Lee Normile. He was the brother of Jackie, Michael, Kathy, Timmy, Kevin, Maureen, Debbie, Christine, Danny and Patrick. He is also survived by his nieces and nephews, Joey, Melisa, Meghan, Caitlin, Kelsey, Brendon, Brianna, Anthony, Ryan, Tyler and Jake.

A graveside service was held today, Sept. 21, in the new section of Sleepy Hollow Cemetery, Bedford Road, Concord.

For those who wish, contributions may be made in Brian Matthew's memory to the Massachusetts SIDS Center, Boston Medical Center, One Boston Medical Center Place, Boston, MA 02118, or in Mr. Normile's memory to the American Cancer Society, 30 Speen St., Framingham, MA 01701.

Arrangements were under the care of the Brown & Sons Funeral Home, Belmont.

Martha Krutt

Martha (Lee) Krutt, 93, of Vero Beach, Fla., formerly of Belmont, died Saturday, Sept. 16, 2000, at home in the Isles of Vero. She was the wife of the late Meyer Krutt for over 60 years. Mrs. Krutt retired from a 35-year career in Boston area hospitals which spanned hospital administration, surgical nursing, nursing supervision and clinical instruction. For many years she was the administrator and nursing supervisor of the OB/GYN maternity wards and the 600-bed South Department (for communicable diseases) of Boston City Hospital. Her late husband was a violinist in Boston orchestras. She is survived by a son, Richard L. Krutt of Vero Beach; a grandson, Michael L. Krutt of Windsor, Conn.; a sister, Freda Craig of St. George, New Brunswick, Canada; Dr. Samuel H. and Juliana Kim of Chestnut Hill, Mass. and many nieces, nephews and close friends in New England and Florida. Relatives and friends are invited to attend funeral services in the Short, Williamson & Diamond Funeral Home, 52 Trapelo Road, Belmont, tomorrow, Sept. 22 at 1 p.m. Interment will be in Blue Hills Cemetery, Braintree. In lieu of flowers, contributions in her memory to the charity of one's choice would be appreciated.
