Muriel Thomas
Muriel Thomas, 92, died Saturday, July 15, 2000. Born in Belmont, she was the daughter of the late William H. and Josephine (Lovett) Thomas. She was a graduate of Belmont High School and a former music teacher. Ms. Thomas is survived by her nieces and nephews, Stanley Thomas of Belmont, Marilyn Crocker of Foxboro, Peter Thomas of Lincoln, Lucinda Wright of Greenville, N.C., Allen Thomas of Compton, N.H. and Joyce Thomas of Texas. She was the sister of the late Elsie Thomas, Chester Thomas, Carl Thomas, Leland Thomas and Melvin Thomas. A graveside service was held at Belmont Cemetery Saturday, July 25. Memorial contributions may be made in her memory to the Sisters of St. Anne, 25 Hillside Ave., Arlington, MA 02476. Arrangements were by Brown & Sons Funeral Home, Belmont.
George W. Catterall
LEXINGTON - George William Catterall, 79, died July 29, 2000. He was the husband of Jean (Answorth) Catterall.
He was born in Belmont and was a graduate of Belmont High School. Mr. Catterall also graduated with a degree in industrial engineering from Northeastern University. He was a past president of Sigma Phi Alpha.
Mr. Catterall was a member of the Simon W. Robertson Masonic Lodge in Lexington.
In addition to his wife, he is survived by a son, Peter H. Catterall of Everett, Wash.; a sister, Phyllis C. Whalon of Sturbridge; a brother-in-law, Robert H. Answorth of New York; a granddaughter, Nicole Scotti of Everett, Wash.; and several nieces and nephews.
A funeral service was held Aug. 1, from the Brown & Sons Funeral Home in Belmont. Interment was private.
Emily FitzHugh
Emily FitzHugh, 85, died Tuesday, Aug. 1, 2000, at Massachusetts General Hospital after a stroke. Born in 1915 in New York City, she grew up in Concord and Andover. In recent years she lived in Belmont, Watertown and Boston. She was the wife of John Strathie, who died in 1983, and the former wife of Robert Thomas. She attended Abbot Academy in Andover and was an editorial secretary at the Freer Gallery of the Smithsonian Institute in Washington, D.C., Harvard Divinity School and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, and for the publisher David Godine in Boston. She also worked as a secretary at Payson Park Church in Belmont. Her book of poems, "Good Morning, God," was published in 1996. Survivors include her brother, Richard FitzHugh of Mitchellville, Md.; two nephews, Thomas FitzHugh of Chicago and William FitzHugh of Somerville; and a great-nephew, Reid. Interment will be at the Woodlawn Cemetery in New York City.
Michael R. Lettieri
Michael R. Lettieri, 84, died Wednesday, Aug. 2, 2000. He was the husband of Mary C. (Dinsmoor) Lettieri. Born in Cambridge, he was a resident of Belmont for 44 years. He was the owner and operator of a gas station in Cambridge and worked for the Belmont Council on Aging. Besides his wife, to whom he was married 60 years this month, Mr. Lettieri is survived by two sons, Robert M. Lettieri and his wife Fran, and Richard B. Lettieri; two daughters, Barbara J. Moreland and her husband John, and Marian E. Chella and her husband Anthony; three grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. He was predeceased by a grandson, Michael Whitman. The funeral was held Saturday, Aug. 5 from the Brown & Sons Funeral Home, Belmont, followed by a funeral Mass at St. Jerome's Church in Arlington. Interment was in Mt. Auburn Cemetery, Cambridge. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the American Cancer Society, 30 Speen St., Framingham, MA 01701.
Benedict J. LeBlanc
Benedict J. LeBlanc, 83, formerly of Watertown, died Wednesday, Aug. 2, 2000. He was the husband of the late Anita (Gaudet) LeBlanc. Born in Lexington, he was the son of the late Irenee and M. Amy (Comeau) LeBlanc. He was a member of the Pipefitters Union Local 537 and the Watertown V.F.W. Post 1105. He was a U.S. Navy veteran of World War II. Mr. LeBlanc is survived by three daughters, Anne and Linda LeBlanc, both of Burlington, and Janet Atkinson and her husband Courtney (Skip) of Belmont; two grandchildren; a sister, Anne Comeau of Sarasota, Fla., and relatives in Nova Scotia, Canada. The funeral was held Saturday, Aug. 5 from the Brown & Sons Funeral Home, Belmont, followed by a funeral Mass at St. Luke's Church, Belmont. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in his memory to a charity of one's choice.
Angelina A. Camelio
Angelina A. Camelio, 92, of Belmont, widow of Sal Camelio, past president of the Mass. AFL-CIO, died Thursday, Sept. 16, 1999 at Mt. Auburn Hospital. Born in Italy, she came to Cambridge, Mass. at the age of six. She was educated in Cambridge and was hostess of many labor events, entertaining such people as Eleanor Roosevelt, President Harry Truman, senators and governors. Mrs. Camelio is survived by three daughters, Ann Marie Dell'Anno of Belmont, Carolyn Camelio of Boston and Corinne Drake of Tewksbury; two sons, Dennis Camelio of New Hampshire and Augustus J. Camelio of Milton; seven grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. Funeral services were held on Saturday, Sept. 18 at St. Jerome's Church in Belmont and interment followed in Belmont Cemetery. The DeVito-O'Donnell Funeral Home, Arlington, was in charge of arrangements.
H. Margaret Masse
H. Margaret Masse, 90, a former longtime resident of Belmont, died Sept. 28, 1999 in Durham, N.C. after a brief illness. She was the wife of the late John Arthur Masse. Raised and educated in Medford, Mrs. Masse lived in Belmont for many years before moving to Centerville, Mass. She moved to Durham in August 1998. She worked for the Commonwealth of Massachusetts until her retirement. Mrs. Masse leaves a daughter, Connie Howard of Durham; a sister, Mary E. McKeon of Centerville; three grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews. A memorial Mass was celebrated Oct. 1, at Our Lady of Victory Church in Centerville; burial was at Oak Grove Cemetery, West Medford. Donations in her memory may be made to a charity of your choice.
Lenna Byrne
Lenna (Whitehill) Byrne, 92, died Oct. 6, 2000. She was the wife of the late James J. Byrne. She was born in Groton, Vt., the daughter of the late Dexter M. and Susan (Eastman) Whitehill. From 1949 to 1972, she was an employee of the Haussermann, Dawson & Shattuck Law Firm in Boston. Mrs. Bryne was a former member of the Arlington Women's Club. She is survived by several nieces and nephews, and grandnieces and grandnephews. She was also the sister of the late Christine Bacon and Millie Heath. A funeral service was held Oct. 11, in the Bigelow Chapel in Mt. Auburn Cemetery in Cambridge. For those who wish, contributions in Mrs. Byrne's memory may be made to the Buddy Dog Humane Society, Inc., P.O. Box 296, Sudbury, MA 01776. Arrangements were under the care of the Brown & Sons Funeral Home, Belmont.
Daniel J. Finn Sr.
BILLERICA - Daniel J. Finn Sr., 88, died Oct. 1, 2000, at the Saints Memorial Medical Center in Lowell following a lengthy illness. He was the husband of Elinor G. (Quinn) Finn, to whom he was married for 52 years.
He was born in Cambridge, the son of the late Jeremiah and Nellie (Dwyer) Finn, and formerly resided in Cambridge before moving to Billerica. Mr. Finn served in the Army's Intelligence Unit during World War II.
After his military service, Mr. Finn was employed in the Cambridge treasurer's office and later at the Billerica House of Correction. Mr. Finn transferred to the East Cambridge Courthouse where he worked may years as a jury officer until his retirement in 1972. He then worked as a caretaker at the Schaffer Landfill in Billerica until its closing.
Mr. Finn was a communicant of St. Mary's Church in Billerica. He was a member and former chairman of the Billerica Democratic Committee, and was also a member of the Billerica Knights of Columbus, Father Wren Council No. 3963, and the Cambridge VFW.
In addition to his wife, he is survived by a nephew and his wife, Jim and Delores Finn of Belmont. He was also the father of the late Daniel J. Finn Jr., and the brother of the late Gerald Finn, Joseph Finn and James Finn.
A funeral was held Oct. 5, from the Sweeney Memorial Funeral Home in Billerica, followed by a funeral Mass in St. Mary's Church. Interment was in Fox Hill Cemetery.
Mary M. Comeau
Mary M. (Sheehan) Comeau, 93, of Belmont, formerly of Watertown, died Wednesday, Sept. 29, 1999 at Maristhill Nursing Home, Waltham. She was the wife of the late Edward J. Comeau. Born in Boston, she was the daughter of the late Maurice and Margaret (Hawkins) Sheehan. She grew up in Watertown and was a graduate of St. Patrick's High School. She lived many years in Belmont and was a homemaker. Mrs. Comeau is survived by a daughter, Jeanne F. Sylligardos, and her husband James J. of Weston; two sons, Edward J. Comeau and his wife Anne of Chelsea, Mich., and Richard J. Comeau and his wife Susan of Eastham; eight grandchildren, four great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews. She was also sister of the late Maurice J. Sheehan of Watertown. The funeral was held from the MacDonald, Rockwell & MacDonald Funeral Home, Watertown Square, on Saturday, Oct. 2, followed by a funeral Mass in the Sacred Heart Church, Waltham. Interment followed in Linwood Cemetery, Weston. In lieu of flowers, donations may be sent to Activities Dept., Maristhill Nursing Home, 66 Newton St., Waltham, MA 02454.
