William Balkus
READING - William Balkus, 70, died July 13, 2000, at his home. He was the husband of Nancy (Wheeler) Balkus.
He was born in Wilmington, the son of the late Antonio and Jenny (Biziulaninti) Balkus. He lived in Wilmington for many years before moving to Reading 35 years ago.
Mr. Balkus served in the U.S. Army during the Korean Conflict.
Mr. Balkus was a heavy equipment operator at Jackson Brothers Builders in Wilmington for 20 years. Before he retired, he owned Balkus Excavating for 15 years.
He was a member of the Medford Veterans of Foreign Wars and a former member of the Wilmington Lions Club.
In addition to his wife, he is survived by two sons, William S. Balkus and Brian Balkus, both of Reading; a daughter, Wendy Blacker and her husband Kevin of Henniker, N.H.; a sister, Jenny O'Brien of Belmont; and three grandchildren. He was also the brother of the late Florence and Frank Balkus, both of Wilmington, and the late Alfred Balkus of Gloucester.
A funeral was held July 17, from the W.S. Cavanaugh & Son Funeral Home in Wilmington, followed by a funeral Mass in St. Athanasius Church, Reading. Interment was in Wildwood Cemetery, Wilmington.
Muriel Thomas
A graveside service will be held at Belmont Cemetery, 121 Grove St., Belmont, on Tuesday, July 25 at 10:30 a.m. for Muriel Thomas, 92, of Belmont, who died July 15, 2000. Born in Belmont, Ms. Thomas was the daughter of the late William H. and Josephine (Lovett) Thomas. She was a graduate of Belmont High School, and a music teacher. Ms. Thomas leaves four brothers, Chester Thomas, Carl Thomas, Leland Thomas and Melvin Thomas; and a sister, Elsie Thomas. She also leaves a nephew, Stanley E. Thomas of Belmont. Donations in Ms. Thomas' memory may be made to the Sisters of St. Anne, 25 Hillside Ave., Arlington, MA 02476. Arrangements are under the direction of the Brown & Sons Funeral Home, Belmont.
Richard A. Brooks
NEW IPSWICH, N.H. - Richard A. Brooks, 60, died suddenly July 11, 2000, in New Ipswich. He was the husband of Wilma (Flick) Brooks. He was born in Medford, and graduated from Belmont High School. He later graduated from Bentley College in accounting. Mr. Brooks served in the United States Air Force for four years. He was employed for the State Street Bank in Quincy for 30 years, before retiring last year. He was a member of the Mason, N.H. Garden Club, Chapter 68 Rambling Minutemen, HRRVC, and the Steve Kewl Doo-Wop Club. When Mr. Brooks was younger he was also a member of the DeMolay. In addition to his wife, he is survived by two sons, Darrin and Dana Brooks of New Ipswich; a daughter, Deanna DeMello of Littleton; and four grandchildren. A funeral service was held July 15, from the Badger Funeral Home in Littleton. Interment was in Westlawn Cemetery, Littleton. Mary E. Smith
Mary E. Smith, 95, died July 15, 2000, at Emerson Nursing Home. She was born in Maynard, the daughter of the late John F. and Margaret A. (Waldron) Smith. Ms. Smith was a retired secretary and bookkeeper. She is survived by a brother, Edward A. Smith of Florida; a sister, Pauline T. Smith of Belmont; several nieces, nephews, grandnieces, grandnephews, and a great-grandniece. A funeral was held July 19, from the Stanton Funeral Home in Watertown, followed by a funeral Mass in Our Lady of Mercy Church, Belmont. Interment was in St. Patrick's Cemetery. Arrangements were under the care of the Stanton Funeral Service, Inc., Watertown.
Darrel B. Currie
PINELLAS PARK, Fla. - Darrel B. Currie, 86, died June 29, 2000, in Pinellas Park following an extended illness. He was the husband of Charlotte Currie. A native of Maine, Mr. Currie was a resident of Belmont from 1954 to 1983. He was a member of Payson Park Church, where he was a deacon and served on many committees. He graduated from the University of Maine, Class of 1936. He was employed as a claims agent in Boston and New York City for Liberty Mutual Insurance Company until 1942, when he entered the F.B.I. as a special agent. He served in the Chicago, Philadelphia and Boston offices and then became a resident agent in Bangor, Maine from 1945 to 1954 when he was assigned to headquarters in Washington, D.C. He later returned to the Boston office and retired in 1967. He then worked as assistant to the director of security for Raytheon Corp. in Lexington from 1967 to 1977. In 1983, he moved to South Yarmouth, and enjoyed a happy retirement there and in Florida. In addition to his wife, he is survived by a son, Dr. Allan Currie and his wife Linda of Bangor, Maine; a daughter, Barbara MacKenzie and her husband Hugh of Madison, Conn.; two sisters, Eleanor Parsons of Rockport, and Charlotte Stafford of Florida; and five grandchildren. Funeral services were held in Florida and a private graveside ceremony will be held later at Mt. Hope Cemetery in Bangor, Maine.
Dorothy Avedian
JAMAICA PLAIN - Dorothy Avedian, 85, formerly of Belmont and Watertown, died July 18, 2000, in the Armenian Nursing and Rehabilitation Center in the Jamaica Plain section of Boston. She was the wife of the late Robert Avedian.
She was the daughter of the late Yassaie and Zanazan (Bozakian) Bozkourdian, and was born in Gurin, Armenia.
Mrs. Avedian is survived by a daughter, Nancy Russo and her husband Joe of Weston, Fla.; and two granddaughters. She also leaves several nieces and nephews including Margaret Marashlian of Arlington, Ronald Demerjian and Kenneth Demerjian, both of Waltham, and Grace Takvorian of Belmont.
Graveside services were held July 21, at the Newton Cemetery.

Mary B. Hoctor
WOBURN - Mary B. Hoctor, 75, died July 24, 2000, at Winchester Hospital following an extended illness. She was the wife of the late Paul G. Hoctor. She was born and raised in South Boston, graduating from South Boston High School. Mrs. Hoctor was a member of the Telephone Pioneers of America, having worked for New England Telephone for more than 25 years. A very religious woman, she was a member of St. Charles Church. She loved to read and spend time with her grandchildren. She is survived by four sons, Thomas P. Hoctor of Wakefield, Paul J. Hoctor and Stephen C. Hoctor, both of Woburn, and Daniel P. Hoctor of Lynn; a daughter, Kathleen Gregory of Wakefield; a brother, William Foley of Billerica; a sister, Margaret Foley of Belmont; and 10 grandchildren. She was also the mother of the late Mary T. Hoctor, and the sister of the late Patrick and Mark Foley and the late Theresa Kennedy. A funeral was held July 28, from the Lynch-Cantillon Funeral Home in Woburn, followed by a funeral Mass in St. Charles Church. Interment was in Woodbrook Cemetery, Woburn. Barbara Crowell
Barbara (Hugo) Crowell, 76, died Monday, July 31, 2000. She was the wife of the late Dr. William M. Crowell. Born in Bridgeport, Conn., she was the daughter of the late Adam and Elsie (Tuttle) Hugo. She was a graduate of the University of Connecticut and a member of the Gamma Zeta of Kappa Alpha Theta sorority. She worked for NBC with the Department of Defense during World War II. She was a Belmont resident for 46 years and volunteered at the Mt. Auburn Hospital Gift Shop for 25 years. Mrs. Crowell is survived by two daughters, Suzanne M. Crowell of Belmont and Cynthia Thompson of Holderness, N.H.; two sons, William R. Crowell of Buzzards Bay and Richard A. Crowell of Belmont; and five grandchildren. She was the sister of the late Kenneth Hugo of Pennsylvania. Visiting hours at the Brown & Sons Funeral Home, 36 Trapelo Road, Belmont, will be held today, Aug. 3, from 1 to 3 and 7 to 9 p.m. Interment will be private. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in her memory to Mt. Auburn Hospital Gift Shop, 330 Mt. Auburn St., Cambridge, MA 02338.
Margaret M. Dunn
Margaret M. (McGrath) Dunn, 89, died July 26, 2000, at the Belmont Manor Nursing Center in Belmont. She was the wife of the late Thomas F. Dunn Jr. She was born in Dorchester, the daughter of the late Patrick F. and Alice (Loeman) McGrath. She was a graduate of Dorchester High School and had been employed for many years as a legal secretary with Choate, Hall & Stewart in Boston. She was a member of Our Lady of Carmel Sodality at St. Luke's Parish in Belmont. Mrs. Dunn resided in Watertown from 1970-1988, and then in Belmont from 1988-2000. She is survived by a sister, Helen B. O'Hare of Waltham, formerly of Belmont; and several nieces and nephews. She was also the sister of the late Alice Hopkinson and Mary Canavan. A funeral was held July 29, from the MacDonald, Rockwell & MacDonald Funeral Home in Watertown, followed by a funeral Mass in the Church of St. Luke, Belmont. Interment was in St. Joseph's Cemetery, West Roxbury.
