William J. Simpson
William John Simpson died Monday, Feb. 14, 2000. He was the husband of the late Helen (Chadbourne) Simpson.
Mr. Simpson was born in Boston, Sept. 23, 1897, and his life spanned three centuries. He served in the United States Army as a second lieutenant in the Infantry, and was stationed in Mexico and Fort Gordon, Ga. He modeled for the Arrow Shirt Company and appeared in newspaper ads of Boston papers. He attended Bentley College and worked for various New York City and Boston businesses until his retirement.
In 1968 he and his late wife moved to South Yarmouth, Cape Cod from Belmont. He spent his retirement doing oil painting, woodworking and gardening. In 1976 he wrote a short story about a baby Baltimore oriole, Alexander, that he and his wife rescued and hand-raised, which was later published. He was also a member of the Masons.
Survivors include a son, John Whitten Simpson of Belmont and South Yarmouth; a daughter, Wendy Chadbourne Simpson of Cambridge; and two brothers, Robert and Walter, of Menlo Park, Calif.

Georgia P. Poulos
Georgia P. (Mavraides) Poulos, a 69-year resident of Belmont, died Feb. 8, 2000, at Mount Auburn Hospital in Cambridge. She was the wife of the late George P. Poulos. Mrs. Poulos was an active member of the Hellenic American community. She was on the Executive Board of the Hellenic Nursing Home of Canton, and was appointed a life trustee of the home. She held membership in the Boston and South Shore chapters of the Daughters of Penelope, and received the 1990 Daughters of Penelope Award of the Year. She was an active member of the Boston chapter of the Daughters of Laconia. Mrs. Poulos was involved in countless fund-raising and charitable activities. With many talents and great enthusiasm, she had an inbred ability, a heartfelt desire and true humility to care for and help those less fortunate. She is survived by a son, Peter Poulos of Framingham; two daughters, Valerie Kazamias of Madison, Wis., and Frances Mavodones of South Portland, Maine; five grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; and was "Nana" to many. Arthur J. Govostes Jr.
Arthur J. Govostes Jr., 71, of Belmont, formerly of Woburn, died Saturday, Feb. 5, 2000 in Memorial Hospital, Pembroke Pines, Fla. after a short illness. He was the husband of Rita (Gannon) Govostes. Born in Woburn he was the son of the late Arthur J. and Sarah (Harkins) Govostes. Upon graduation from Woburn High School he immediately enlisted in the U.S. Army. He was the owner of ARGO Studio of Photography in West Newton for many years. After retirement from photography, he went to work at the postal department and was a letter carrier in Arlington, retiring 10 years ago as a supervisor. He was a member and past commander of Disabled American Veterans Chapter 10 of Dorchester, an avid golfer and also enjoyed working with photography studios. Besides his wife of 49 years, he is survived by four brothers, Walter of Bedford, Kenneth of Reading, Norman of Burlington and William of Woburn; two sisters, Mary Welden of Winchester and Barbara Uliano of Wakefield; and many nieces and nephews. His brother Donald died Jan. 11. A funeral was held Feb. 10 from the P.J. Cox & Sons Funeral Home, 14 Highland St., Woburn followed by a funeral Mass in St. Charles Church. Burial was in the Massachusetts National Cemetery in Bourne.
Gregory G. Zwicker
Gregory G. Zwicker, 45, of Billerica, died Feb. 3, 2000, at his home, following a lengthy bout with cancer. He was born in Malden, the son of Anne L. (Hamilton) Zwicker of Lexington and the late George A. Zwicker. Mr. Zwicker was owner and principal of Cambridge Auto Metal since 1984. He was a member of Waumbek Methna Snowmobile Club in Jefferson, N.H. In addition to his mother, he is survived by two daughters, Wendy K. Zwicker and Kerry L. Zwicker, both of Billerica. He was the former husband of Audrey (Harris) Zwicker. A funeral was held Feb. 7, in Grace Chapel in Lexington. Interment was in Westview Cemetery, Lexington. Helen M. Fiore
Helen M. (O'Donnell) Fiore, 79, of Belmont, died Feb. 13, 2000, at Emerson Nursing Home. She was the wife of C. Charles Fiore. Mrs. Fiore was born in Boston. In addition to her husband, she is survived by a son, Robert J. Fiore of Belmont; a daughter-in-law, Margaret M. Kaplan of Newton; two sisters, Lillian Caeran of Mansfield, and Mary Sawiski of New Hampshire; three grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren. A funeral was held today, Feb. 17, from the Stanton Funeral Home, Watertown, followed by a funeral mass in St. Joseph Church, Belmont. Interment was in Belmont Cemetery. Dorothy R. Joel
Dorothy Ruth (Mahoney) Joel, 89, died Feb. 3, 2000, at the Sancta Maria Nursing Facility in Cambridge. She was the wife of Samuel W. Joel, M.D.
Born in Malden, she was a lifelong resident of Belmont. She was a graduate of Dryant and Stratton Business School.
She was a member of the Belmont Historical Society.
In addition to her husband, she is survived by two daughters, Dorothy E. Roesch of Geneva, N.Y., and Beverly A. Joel of Belmont; a brother, Arthur V. Mahoney of Pensacola, Fla.; a sister, Gladys E. Mahoney of Belmont; three grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; and several nephews.
A funeral mass was celebrated Feb. 7, in St. Joseph's Church, Belmont. Interment was in Belmont Cemetery.

John L. Sullivan
John L. Sullivan, 78, of Belmont, died Sunday, Jan. 30, 2000 at St. Elizabeth's Hospital. He was the husband of Elizabeth (Carlin) Sullivan. Born in Cambridge, he was a graduate of Boston College, Class of 1942. Prior to his retirement he was a sales manager for Munroe Auto Equipment Co. He was a Navy veteran of World War II and the Korean conflict. He was a lecturer and Eucharistic Minister at Our Lady of Mercy Church and a member of the Woodland Country Club. Besides his wife, Mr. Sullivan is survived by three sons, John L. Jr. of Belmont, Thomas P. of Gardner and Peter G. of Bedford; a daughter, Mary Ann McAuliffe of Sandwich; a sister, Mary O'Loughlin of Belmont; and nine grandchildren. He was predeceased by a daughter, Susan Sullivan. The funeral was held Wednesday, Feb. 2 from the Stanton Funeral Home, Watertown with a funeral Mass in Our Lady of Mercy Church, Belmont. Margaret M. O'Neil
Margaret M. (Ryan) O'Neil, a homemaker, died unexpectedly Tuesday, Jan. 25, 2000 at her home. She was the wife of Harold F. O'Neil, who died in 1998. Born in Boston and raised in Waltham, she graduated from St. Mary's High School in Waltham and from a local college. After her marriage in 1941 she settled in Belmont, where she was active with the Girl Scouts and St. Joseph's Catholic Church. She later worked with the Visiting Nurse Association of Belmont. In 1980 Mrs. O'Neil and her husband retired to Centerville where she was an active member of Our Lady of Victory Catholic Church. Her hobbies included walking and reading. She is survived by three sons, Dr. Paul W. O'Neil of Belmont, Dr. Harold F. O'Neil Jr. of Sherman Oaks, Calif. and Dr. Robert J. O'Neil of West Lafayette, Ind.; two daughters, Phyllis O'Neil of Lexington and Barbara A. Brett of Arlington; a brother, Francis Ryan of Winthrop; 10 grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. The funeral was held at the Doane, Beal & Ames Funeral Home, Hyannis, followed by a Mass in Our Lady of Victory Church in Centerville. Burial took place in the Massachusetts National Cemetery in Bourne. Memorial donations may be made to the charity of one's choice.
Elizabeth C. Donovan
Elizabeth C. (MacDonald) Donovan, 87, of Watertown, died Feb. 4, 2000. She was the wife of the late William J. Donovan. Mrs. Donovan was born in Prince Edward Island. She was a retired secretary of Mt. Auburn Hospital. Mrs. Donovan is survived by three sons, William J. Donovan of Franklin, Robert L. Donovan and John J. Donovan, both of Watertown; a daughter, Margaret M. Maillet of Belmont; a sister, Mary I. Shaw of Newton; seven grandchildren; and 12 great-grandchildren. She was also the sister of the late Louis and Reginald MacDonald. A funeral service was held Feb. 7, from the Stanton Funeral Home, Watertown, followed by a funeral mass in the Sacred Heart Church, Watertown. Interment was in Ridgelawn Cemetery.
