Kevin B. Halloran
Kevin B. Halloran, 57, of Belmont, died Feb. 17, 2000, at Sunbridge for Newton Nursing Home. He was the husband of Margrit (Doebeli) Halloran. Mr. Halloran attended Boston Latin School and Boston College where he earned a master's degree in special education. He taught at Boston Latin School for several years before entering the special education field in the Boston Public Schools. In addition to his wife, he is survived by three sons, Robert A. Halloran and Matthew D. Halloran of Waltham, and Christopher M. Halloran of Belmont; a daughter, Patricia Munroe of Pittsfield; a brother, John A. Halloran of Oyster Harbor; a sister, Mary L. Brennan of Arlington; and two grandchildren. He was the son of Mary (Linnane) Halloran and the late Michael K. Halloran. A funeral mass was celebrated Feb. 18 in Our Lady of Mercy Church, Belmont. Interment was in Mount Auburn Cemetery. For those who wish, contributions in Mr. Halloran's memory may be made to the Alzheimers Foundation, 1 Kendall Square, Bldg. 200, Cambridge, MA 02139. David J. Fitzmaurice
David J. Fitzmaurice of Belmont died on Wednesday, Feb. 23, 2000, his 95th birthday. His wife of 59 years, Lucille Fitzmaurice, died in November 1997. Born in Lawrence, he moved to Cambridge at a young age and was a graduate of Cambridge High and Latin School, and attended Burdett College. He was employed as an office manager and tax consultant at Kays Newport Shoes, Control Logic, and retired from the Belmont Municipal Light Department at the age of 70. He was a resident of Fitzmaurice Circle, which bears his name, since 1938, and devoted more than 50 years of service to the town. He was an elected Town Meeting member, a member of the Board of Registrars of Voters, a charter member of the Council on Aging, serving as its treasurer for 17 years, a member of the Permanent Audit Committee, serving as its clerk, and past president of the Belmont Historical Society. Mr. Fitzmaurice is survived by two daughters, Mary K. Penny and her husband John of Scituate; and Roberta L. Connors and her husband William of Darnestown, Md.; six grandchildren and several great-grandchildren. A funeral Mass was held at St. Jerome's Church, Arlington. Burial followed in Belmont Cemetery. Arrangements were under the direction of the Berglund, Williams, O'Brien Funeral Home, Arlington.
Mary E. Lopez
Mary E. (McDonough) Lopez, 75, of Belmont, formerly of Watertown, died Sunday, Feb. 20, 2000 at home. She was the wife of the late Albert W. Lopez. Born in Waltham, she was employed at Filenes department store until her retirement. Mrs. Lopez is survived by two daughters, Mary Lou Lopez of Orlando, Fla., and Patricia Lopez of Belmont; a son, Robert W. and his wife Anna and three grandchildren, all of Stow. The funeral was held from the Stanton Funeral Home, Watertown, Wednesday, Feb. 23 with a funeral Mass in Our Lady of Mercy Church, Belmont. Interment followed in Belmont Cemetery.
Alice M. Coakley
Alice M. (Perry) Coakley, 88, a longtime Woburn resident, died Feb. 24, 2000, at Piety Corner Nursing Home in Waltham, following a lengthy illness. She was the wife of the late William Thomas Coakley, who died in 1984. She was born in Burlington, the daughter of the late Charles and Hattie (Neville) Perry. Mrs. Coakley is survived by a daughter-in-law, Patricia Dixon of Belmont; five grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandchild; and a niece, Lorraine Larkin of Mashpee. She was also the mother of the late Wallace Dixon, and the grandmother of the late Diane Dixon. A funeral service was held Feb. 26, from the Graham Funeral Home, Woburn. Interment was in Chestnut Hill Cemetery, Burlington.
Ethel McFarlan
Ethel Warren White McFarlan, 93, a longtime resident of Belmont, died Feb. 26, 2000, at Carlton Willard in Bedford. She was the wife of the late Ronald Lyman McFarlan. She is survived by a son, Franklin Warren McFarlan of Belmont; a daughter, Ethel (McFarlan) Hamann of Belmont; five grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren. Private graveside services were held at Mt. Auburn Cemetery, Cambridge. For those who wish, contributions in Mrs. McFarlan's memory may be made to Mt. Auburn Hospital, 330 Mt. Auburn St., front desk, Cambridge, MA 02238. Arrangements were under the direction of the Anderson-Bryant Funeral Home, Stoneham.
Lawrence V. Sousa
Lawrence V. Sousa, 90, a resident of Belmont since 1933, died Friday, Feb. 18, 2000. He was the husband of the late Elvira (Ragusa) Sousa.
He was the son of the late Victor and Louise (Gomes) Sousa. He was an instrument maker for the Central Scientific Company (Cenco Corp.) for 40 years, and an electro-mechanical technician at MIT's National Magnet Laboratory, where he designed and built equipment for the study of atomic structure, for 14 years. After his retirement in 1980 he was a volunteer for the Belmont Council on Aging for 16 years, delivering meals on wheels.
Mr. Sousa is survived by a son, Lawrence V. Jr. of Bedford; a sister, Frances Connare of Texas; five grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; and a companion, Marjorie Sordillo of Everett.
The funeral was held Tuesday, Feb. 22 at St. Luke's Church with Monsignor Brady as celebrant. Burial followed in Calvary Cemetery, Woburn.
Arrangements were under the direction of the Greene Funeral Home, Belmont.
Paul F. Faunce
Dr. Paul F. Faunce, 85, of Belmont, died Tuesday, Feb. 15, 2000 at the Cambridge Hospital after a brief illness. He was the husband of the late Mary Josephine (Rogers) Faunce. Born in Boston, he was a longtime Belmont resident. A graduate of Harvard University and Tufts Dental School, he was a dentist in the town for 30 years, retiring in 1981. He was an Army veteran serving in World War II and a member of the Massachusetts Dental Society. He is survived by a daughter, Susan M. Faunce of Belmont, and several nieces and nephews. The funeral was held from the Short, Williamson & Diamond Funeral Home, Belmont, Friday, Feb. 18 with a funeral Mass in St. Joseph's Church. Interment was in St. Joseph's Cemetery, W. Roxbury. William J. Simpson
William John Simpson of Belmont died Feb. 14, 2000. He was the husband of the late Helen (Chadbourne) Simpson. Mr. Simpson was born in Boston on Sept. 23, 1897, and his life spanned three centuries. He attended Bentley College and was employed at various New York City and Boston businesses until his retirement. He served in the United States Infantry as a second lieutenant, stationed in Fort Gordon, Ga. and Mexico. In Mexico he served under Gen. Pershing pursuing Pancho Villa. Mr. Simpson modeled for the Arrow Shirt Company and appeared in newspaper
ads of Boston papers. Mr. Simpson spent his retirement doing oil painting, woodworking and gardening. In 1976 he wrote a short story about a baby Baltimore oriole, Alexander, that he and his wife rescued and hand-raised; the story was later published. He was a member of the Masons. He is survived by a son, John Whitten Simpson of Belmont and South Yarmouth; a daughter, Wendy Chadbourne Simpson of Cambridge; and two brothers, Robert Simpson and Walter Simpson, both of Menlo Park, Calif. A memorial service on Cape Cod and in Forest Hills will be held at a later date. Elinor M. McAuliffe
Elinor M. McAuliffe, 83,of Belmont, died Saturday, Feb. 19, 2000 after a brief illness. Born in Cambridge, she was a longtime resident of Belmont. She graduated from Cambridge High and Latin, Lesley College and Framingham State College with a bachelor of science degree in home economics. She taught at Belmont High School and was dietician for the Belmont school system for more than 30 years. She then became senior supervisor of education for the Massachusetts Department of Education, Bureau of Nutrition, and held office in several professional and nutritional associations. She was a volunteer for many civic, charitable and educational organizations. Ms. McAuliffe is survived by two sisters, Alice Good and Mary McAuliffe, both of Belmont, and a niece, Deirdre Rees. A funeral Mass was celebrated at St. Joseph's Church in Belmont, Wednesday, Feb. 23. Arrangements were by Brown & Sons Funeral Home, Belmont.
